TAR 31 EPISODE 2 LIVE UPDATES & COMMENTARY WED 4/24/19 9PM EST *read Post 1*
Xoruz:
Ever since TAR 19 cancelled a visit to Laos, we've waited over 7 years for this show to get another opportunity to visit Laos. TAR Vietnam broke the glass ceiling for visiting the nation, but I've still waited for TAR US to visit Laos. For me, the wait was worth it, and we were given a good episode. Laos looks stunning in this episode. The leg itself was pretty good, and any team had the chance to win or lose. The placement of the U-Turn before a Detour has been hit or miss for me. The best use so far has been TAR 29 in Greece, and the worst has been TAR 30 in Prague. In this case, I was fine with the placement. Everyone was one equal footing after the alms, and teams arrival at the U-Turn wasn't based on the luck of taxis. The Detour was also pretty balanced, so a U-Turn wasn't a death sentence. I also liked that it was a surprise because it forced teams to make a snap decision. It was surprising that it was used so early. The U-Turn on leg 3 in TAR 28 wasn't used likely due to the fact that several teams knew each other and didn't want to make enemies early. So, it was surprising that the Reilly sisters were willing to U-Turn, and I wonder if it'll be brought up in future legs.
The contrast between zen Colin and his highlight reel. :funny:
Corinne & Eliza's mnemonics for the ABC Detour. :funny:
"We did something." :funny:
Chris naming his elephant Bret. :funny:
"I can't end on an elephant. I love you too much." :'(
ABC: Tonal languages like Lao are pretty difficult, so it was difficult but not impossible.
BBQ: I always like a good market task, and I liked that it combined market chaos with attention to detail.
Elephant: I liked the aspect of teams learning the Lao phrases and elephants are awesome, but this task was the weakest of the leg.
4/5

Actually, U-Turn after the Detour killed way more teams than that.

Makes sense. When the U-Turn is before the detour, the u-turned teams have extra drive to get both detours done ASAP. U-Turn after the detour, a team maybe takes their time more. That said, I still like U-Turn after detour more.

I think I understand what you meant. If you're a fan of the drama causing by the U-Turn then after the Detour is the way to go.

Eh, Drama is kind of the same regardless. It's more like what I said above where I just prefer that a team who finished a task first get first dibs on choosing to u-turn someone. I wouldn't mind U-Turn before detour per se if there was at least a Roadblock or something before it. It's all personal preference though. U-Turn before detour definitely leads to stronger teams getting u-turned which can be viewed as a positive or negative.

That's where the U-Turn vote comes in. To my opinion, this is the fairest kind of U-Turn. It's like democratic while U-Turn after Detour is like republic and before the Detour is democratic republic.

Also side note, I know it may be a lot to ask, but for the final update (the “next week we fly to ___”) is there any chance we could start putting those in spoiler tags? I like to be surprised about where they’re traveling to when I watch the episode and I was stupid and not careful when I scrolled through the updates and now I know where they’re going :(

We can try...but once it is in the Media it isn't a spoiler anymore... so let's all try? But NO promises.

Yeah, it's SPOILERS. Can't stop them all, they're fast & furious. Last time I tried, I was f**ked.

I almost feel like I should shift this convo to BMS thread (probably will if it goes on longer lol) but I actually don't like the idea of the U-Turn vote for that very reason. I think the power to U-Turn is something that should be earned.
