Asuncion has direct flights to Santiago. If they truly wanted to go west at this point, why go from Asuncion to Sao Paulo and then to Santiago? It seems out of the way.

That being said, i have a strong feeling about Lisbon. Madrid would be my 2nd big feel as well.
