Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 9, "The battle of the two Courtney's"
Film date: 2018-05-13 - 2018-05-14

The last pit stop was at Cavendish Beach, PEI. Teams are released from downtown Charlottetown, after along pit stop, in the following order:
1.Nancy & Mellisa  08:532.Courtney & Adam  09:00+0:073.Taylor & Courtney09:22+0:294.Martina & Phil   09:26+0:335.Dylan & Kwame    09:39+0:46
Route info: "Fly to Mexico City"

Teams jump into taxis and make their way to the airport. I assume the flights were arranged and they fly over Toronto to Mexico City. They arrive at 23:15 on flight ASA 1982.

Once teams land in Mexico City then need to make their way to Monumento a la Revolución. Teams reach the monument in the following order:
 1. Taylor & Courtney
 2. Courtney & Adam
 3. Nancy & Mellisa
 4. Dylan & Kwame
 5. Martina & Phil

It is not shown in the episode but here teams encountered a sign that the elevator would open at 7am the next morning. They went to a local hotel and spent the night.

The next morning they ride up the elevator in the order they arrived. In the clue box at the top teams find a surf pad with a video message from some loved ones at home. The message ends with the loved ones telling the racers to make their way to Frontón Mexico and search inside for their next clue.

Dylan & Kwame get a message from one of the kids they coach. It gets really emotional and we learn that Kwame tries to be the father figure to this kid which he himself never had.

Tyler & Courtney hail a cab but the driver tells them that their destination is the big red building over there. Nancy & Mellisa get taken for a ride when their taxi drive them around the block to the building. Teams find the clue box inside in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam, just after #1
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 4(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 5(+0) Martina & Phil

--- Quote ---ROAD BLOCK

Who wants to live the
hi-life?

--- End quote ---

In this road block players get to try the popular sport Jai Alai. They must use a wicker scoop to correctly make one serve. They must stand behind the serve line and throw the ball at the wall so that it bounces back and lands between two lines (3 & 5). This is hard since the serve line seems to be over 21m from the wall and the bounce zone is over 10m from the wall. There are instructors at hand who can help the players with the technique.

The racers may make 3 throws per attempt before they have to go to the back of the line.

"This may be the strangest sport I've ever seen", Courtney (police)

"I feel like captain Hook", Martina about the curved wicker throw thingy latched onto her hand

"Technically you don't need to be an athlete like Mellisa or Dylan, you just need the correct technique", Martina
Martina is right, and she soon find the right technique so she is also out of there.

"It's the battle of the Courtney's", Courtney (police) after the other teams have left but them and Courtney & Adam

"Hey, what's the penalty for a road block", Courtney (police) is starting to panic
"I think I'm getting worse", Courtney (police)

Eventually Courtney (police) realize she can do an underhand throw, and that is much easier and soon after that she gets it.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+3)Dylan* & Kwame    (6-4)2(+1)Nancy & Mellisa*  (5-5)3(+2)Martina* & Phil   (5-5)4(-2)Courtney* & Adam  (5-5)5(-4)Taylor & Courtney*(5-5)

--- Quote ---DETOUR

Detour: "Muertos" or
"Mercado"

Muertos: Become
traditional Day of the
Dead charachters to
receive your next clue.

Mercado: Search the
Central de Abastos
market for produce
needed at a local
restaurant, then make a
batch of Pico de Gallo to
receive your next clue.

--- End quote ---

Mercado takes place in the worlds largest market, i.e. it is big. Teams get a shopping list which lists what they have to buy and from which four specific stalls.

In muertos teams make their way to Coyoacán. Here they must select two different face paint designs and then make a replica of those designs on each other.

Nancy & Mellisa is the only team doing the shopping detour.
 "This market is huge", Mellisa
Eventually they find a girl named Mary who speaks English and is prepared to help them. This is very good for them because she know the market.

The park where teams are face painting each other is also a popular place for dog owners. So they have an audience. We also have the dog riding a skateboard as an interesting side show.

"Babe, we've got to make up some time here", Adam tries a pun
"This is a good challenge, it's a quiet challenge compared to others where my sister is talking the whole time", Phil

"Our cab driver is so lost", Taylor is having problems getting to the detour

"I feel our team work and communication is great today", Mellisa

Teams complete the detour in the following order
1(+0) Dylan & Kwame, face paint
 2(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, shopping
3(+0) Martina & Phil, face paint
4(+0) Courtney & Adam, face paint
5(+0) Taylor & Courtney, face paint

The next clue sends teams to a private residence in an upscale neighborhood. Here they must take part in the filming of a classic Mexican Telenovela (i.e. a soap opera).

"Traffic is crazy", Dylan tries to get to this challenge

Teams arrive to this challenge in the following order:
 1(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 2(+1) Martina & Phil
 3(+1) Courtney & Adam
 4(-2) Nancy & Mellisa, just after #3
5(+0) Taylor & Courtney, as the first team is leaving

Each racer must choose a character and memorize the character's Spanish dialogue. Then they must perform the scene together with the other actors to the satisfaction of the director. The characters are:

Humberto, the patriarch of the family
Julio, long lost lover
Sylvia, Humberto's wife
Constanza, Hubert's daughter

The episode they are filming is titled "La Case de Pasiones y Vergüenzas" (The House of Shame and Passion). The plot is melodramatic where Julio comes back and reveal that he has had an affair with both Sylvia and Constanza. Over the top is just the foreword when describing it.

All the dialogue is in Spanish, but it turns out that the director is not particularly picky about the pronunciation. Otherwise some teams would have been there for much longer..

"I love you, and your daughter", Adam (Humberto) to Courtney (Sylvia) as they practice

"We only got about a second in, so we're gonna try that again", Courtney (nurse) after their first take
"I looked at that guy with his big brown eyes, and I froze", Mellisa on why she missed her lines

Teams complete this task in the following order:
1(+0) Dylan & Kwame, on their 4th take
2(+0) Martina & Phil, on their 4th take
3(+1) Nancy & Mellisa, on their 3rd take
4(+1) Taylor & Courtney, on their 3rd take
5(-2) Courtney & Adam, on their 5th take

Route info: Make your way to Alameda Central and search the park for Jon and your next pit stop.

Courtney & Adam feel stressed when Taylor & Courtney finish the previous task. But they nail their next attempt and when they emerge Taylor & Courtney are still trying to get a taxi. So there is a frantic hunt for taxis. They seem to find taxis at about the same time and then on the way they catch up with Nancy & Mellisa. So there is an exciting three-way race to not be last. Then at one intersection Taylor & Courtney's taxi turn left and the others go straight. In the end there is a footrace for last.

Teams reach Jon and the pit stop in the following order:
1(+0) Dylan & Kwame, win a trip to Sydney
 2(+0) Martina & Phil
 3(+1) Taylor & Courtney
4(+1) Courtney & Adam, win the footrace
5(-2) Nancy & Mellisa, are eliminated

"They key to success was just letting it all hang out. Run without reserve is what I always say.", Nancy

Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 10, "The plan is simple, Win"
Film date: 2018-05-16 - 2018-05-17

The last pit stop was at Alameda Central, Mexico City. Teams depart from somewhere else in Mexico city in the following order:
1.Dylan & Kwame    08:002.Martina & Phil   08:23+0:233.Taylor & Courtney08:40+0:404.Courtney & Adam  08:44+0:44
The first clue tells them to fly back home to Canada more specifically to Fredricton, NB.

All teams are on the same flight from Mexico City to Fredricton via Toronto.

In Fredricton teams jump into taxis and make their way to the Officers' Square in the historic Garrison district.

Here teams will observe a changing of the guards ceremony. They must then make their way to City Hall (400m) where they can observe a different unit performing the same ceremony. The task is to spot the difference between the two ceremonies. Jon tells the viewers that the difference is that at Officers' Square the rear soldiers take 3 steps forward while at City Hall they only take 2.

All teams arrive more or less simultaneously to Officer's Square. Once they have seen the ceremony there they run to City Hall. That is all but Martina & Phil who jump into their taxi. The ceremony at City Hall starts when Martina & Phil arrive and is halfway through when the other teams arrive.

Once teams have spotted the difference they must tell the commander, who seems to be at Officers' Square. They do this in the following order:
 1. Martina & Phil
 2. Dylan & Kwame
 3. Taylor & Courtney
 4. Courtney & Adam

After this task Taylor & Courtney tries to take Courtney & Adams taxi. But the driver does not budge.

--- Quote ---DETOUR

Detour: "Fit" or "Fly"

Fit: Complete an adapted
version of the fitness test
required of all Canadian
Armed Forces Personnel to
receive your next clue.

Fly: Take the controls of a
full-motion flight simulator
and complete a helicopter
mission to receive your next
clue.

NOTE: There are limited
stations at both detours.

--- End quote ---

Both detours take place on the CFB Gagetown in Burton (25km 23min).

In fit both team members must memorize the complicated rules and then correctly perform a set of 4 exercises. One racer must do all 4 exercise in a sequence and then the other. The combined time must be less than 18 minutes. If anybody does anything wrong have to start all over.

In fly teams will get a short introduction and then get to fly a simulated helicopter mission. They must take off from a ship and fly into Toronto and land on a specific building. They have 5 minutes to complete the flight.

Only 2 teams are allowed at either detour side at the same time.

The flight simulator task gets ominous when the instructor pints out where the air sickness bags are.

At fit the instructions for one of the four exercises look like this:

--- Quote ---                                        1
    20 metre rushes

* To start, lie face down on your stomach,
shoulders and hands behind the start line,
hands behind your head.

* On "go", sprint to the middle line.

* When at least one foot has touched on or
over the middle line, back up and lie face
down behind that line, exactly as you did in
your starting position.

* Then, sprint to the far line.

* Cross over the far line, turn around and
lie face down behind that line, exactly as
you did in your starting position.

* Then, sprint back to the middle line.

* Continue this sequence between each line
until you have completed 8 ten-metre line
sprints.

--- End quote ---

There is a crowd of military personnel which cheers the racers on as they do the exercise. There is also an instructor who is quick to point out when they fail.

"It's tough to remember when you're going so hard", Kwame

When Taylor & Courtney arrive as the third team to the fit detour so they find a sign that the detour is full. They deliberate for a while but decide to switch. When they arrive at the flight simulator Martina & Phil are just making their 7th attempt.

Courtney & Adam struggle with the fit detour. On his second attempt Adam gets all the way to the last exercise, but does not drag the bags completely over the finish line so he gets a fail. They decide to make Courtney try once and when she fails (also on the last exercise) they immediately decide to switch.

At the fly detour we learn that Taylor likes to play video games, and that comes in handy here as they succeed on their first attempt.

"I am like directionally challenged", Taylor (nurse) about trying to navigate in the helicopter

After 14 attempts at the helicopter landing Phil need to use the airsickness bag provided. This is not making the task any easier.
"I'm sorry Phil, I'll go really gentle", Martina promises to crash more gently the next time (or something like that)

According to interviews afterwards one reason Martina & Phil had such a hard time landing the helicopter was that Martina was too short to reach the landing switch. Eventually Phil had to reach over and flip it.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
1(+1) Dylan & Kwame, fit on their 6th attempt (time 13:34)
2(+1) Taylor & Courtney, wanted to do fit but had to do fly, which they nail on their first attempt
3(-2) Martina & Phil, fly which they got on their 18th attempt
4(+0) Courtney & Adam, started fit but switched to fly, which they got on their 4th attempt

After this challenge Dylan & Kwame realize they did not ask their cab to wait. They too try to steal Courtney & Adams cab, but the driver will not take them. He calls for another for them cab though.

--- Quote ---FACE OFF

Let's hit the hardwood
for another Face Off!

Beat your opponent in
the wheelchair version
of a Canadian invention,
basketball!

--- End quote ---

Teams must now compete in wheelchair half court basketball. Each team get the help of a third player who can pass and block but not score. They will then play another team in a 15 minute match. If the score is even after 15 minutes the match goes into sudden death.

The face off takes place at the University of New Brunswick in the Lady Beavervrook Gymnasium (24km 18min).

"These guys have arms bigger than my neck", Courtney (police) about their first opponents Dylan & Kwame

"Phil & Martina just showed up. The plan is simple, win", Kwame gets the title
"I don't know what I'm doing", Martina has a hard time in the wheelchair

Adam is going a bit too hard in his wheelchair so he tends to fall over backwards.

Teams leave the face off in the following order:
1(+1) Taylor & Courtney, win against Dylan & Kwame (12-8)
2(-1) Dylan & Kwame, win against Martina & Phil (22-8)
3(+1) Courtney & Adam, win against Martina & Phil after sudden death (10-8)
 4(-1) Martina & Phil

--- Quote ---ROAD BLOCK

Who thinks a picture is
worth at least one word?

--- End quote ---

This road block takes place at the Beaverbrook art gallery (2km). Here teams must identify 6 paintings in Wolastoqey. Each painting is labeled with its name and a description in both English and Wolastoqey. For example:

--- Quote ---                      Wiwonuwehstuhtimok
                        Talking Circle

Ktokehkimkepon weci woli tpostomuhtiyeq. Psiw ote wen kisi qotuhkawestu
weci psiw wen nutok elitahasit. Komac koluwot psiw ote wen kisewestaq.

We are being taught to become good listeners. Everyone is given the opportunity
to speak when it is their turn in order to share their thoughts. It is good medicine
to allow everyone to speak.

--- End quote ---

The racers must listen to questions by an elder outside the museum and answer with the title (in Wolastoqey) of the painting the elder is asking for. The catch is that the questions are in Wolastoqey.

Adam is good at memorizing the painting details, but he responds with the English title.
"I have no idea what I'm doing at this challenge", A frustrated Adam

The pressure builds on Adam when Martina turns up.
"My sister is good with words, she talks a lot", Phil

Finally Adam rereads his clue and see what he is doing wrong and he starts to make progress.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Taylor* & Courtney(6-5)2(+0)Dylan & Kwame*    (6-5)3(+0)Courtney & Adam*  (5-6)4(+0)Martina* & Phil   (6-5)
Route info: "Make your way to Government house and search the grounds for Jon and your next pit stop".

The clue also warns that the last team to check in will be eliminated.

Teams reach Jon at the pit stop (2km) in the following order:
1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, win a trip to Buenos Aires
 2(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 3(+0) Courtney & Adam
4(+0) Martina & Phil, are eliminated

"If you want to go fast you go alone, if you want to go far you go together", Phil
"It was like the ride of my life, best time", Martina

Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 11, "The Summer of Heroes"
Film date: 2018-05-18 - 2018-05-19

The last pit stop was at Government house in Fredericton, NB. Teams depart from the same place the next day in the following order:
1.Taylor & Courtney15:382.Dylan & Kwame    16:16+0:383.Courtney & Adam  16:46+1:08
The first clue tells them that this is the final leg of the race and that they should fly to Calgary, AB.

"We're going home!", Courtney (nurse) when they open the clue

Everybody is on the same flight from Fredericton to Calgary via Toronto.

Once teams land in Calgary they must make their way to the air traffic control tower where they will find their next clue.

It is early morning when teams rush up to the clue box so we can assume they spent the night somewhere. Teams run up to the clue box close to each other so there is only a couple of seconds between the first or last team.

Road block: "Who likes to play it by ear?"

In this road block players must enter the air traffic control tower simulator at the base of the tower. Here they will get a pair of headphones and can listen to an ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) announcement. They must memorize a 30 second message. Once they have the message memorized they may make their way to the control room at the top of the tower where they must recite it to the senior controller.

The message reads:

--- Quote ---Calgary international information Papa.
Weather at one-three-zero-zero Zulu.
Wind two eight zero at ten.
Visibility one-five. Eighth-thousand broken.
Temperature one-five. Dew point one-two.
Altimeter three-zero-one-zero.
Helicopter arrival and departures apron two
Inform ATC that you have Information Papa.

--- End quote ---

"This isn't like police radio chatter", Courtney (police)

It is unclear if they are listening to a recording or the actual ATIS over the radio. In any case there is the usual radio static in the background making it harder to hear what they are saying. Kwame has a lot of trouble with the word "altimeter" which he hears as "alternative" or "alternate".

Courtney (nurse) also has a lot of trouble. She says 'tell' instead of 'inform' in the last line of the message. As she finally gets it she says that she does not know what she did differently. The judge is kind and tells her what she did wrong in her earlier attempts.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1.Taylor & Courtney*(6-6)2.Courtney* & Adam  (6-6)3.Dylan & Kwame*    (6-6)
"Damn, Taylor & Courtney are not the team you want in the lead", Dylan when Taylor & Courtney leave
"I'm pretty frustrated and Courtney & Taylor have a pretty big lead on us", Courtney (nurse) as they leave the air traffic control building

Route info: "Top of the mountain for you".

Teams must now head to apron 2 and board a helicopter which will take them to Banff National Park. The helicopter will land near the top of mount Fable. Here teams must walk to the top and get their next clue. The Helicopters seem to be provided by Alpine Helicopters.

The helicopter ride looks awesome, the views are gorgeous.
"This is possibly the coolest thing I've ever done", Courtney (police)
"I proposed to Courtney down that way", Adam points out the landmarks

The clue at the top of the mountain tells them to make their way to the Sunshine village in Banff national park. Here they must ride the cable car to the top station and search for their next clue.

Teams now get back into their helicopters which will take them down the mountain to their base in Canmore. Here teams can call for a taxi and then make their way to Sunshine Village (44km 33min). After going up the lift teams have no problem finding the clue box.

Road block: "Who's top dog?"

This is a two part road block. The first part is Skijoring. The racers will be placed on skis and will be shackled to two dogs which will then drag them. They must go two laps around the course.

In part two they must ride a small sled down a course and across a pond of cold slushy water to the finish line beyond.

These tasks must be performed by the team member who did not do the control tower road block.

Teams have to ride a chairlift up to the dog skiing task.

This task looks fun but does not really mean much in the race. There does not seem to be any big gains to be made. And the teams are well separated when they arrive so we never see them compete against each other.

"Just us up here, I don't hate that", Courtney (police) about the fact that they have a good lead.

Taylor has an interesting experiences when crossing the slush pond. He is going quite fast so when his sled is bogged down in the water he is thrown off it and hits the side of the pool. He crashes spectacularly so it is a good thing he is wearing a helmet. The GoPro camera he was carrying gets crushed but seems to survive.

Adam on the other hand end up in the pool and later he manages to hit Courtney is the head with his GoPro.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1.Taylor* & Courtney(7-6)Before the next team arrives2.Courtney & Adam*  (6-7)Before the next team arrives3.Dylan* & Kwame    (7-6)Before the next team arrives

--- Quote ---ROUTE INFO

Make your way to the
Banff National Park
Administration Building
and search the grounds
outside for your next
clue.

--- End quote ---

As Taylor & Courtney ride the cabin lift down the mountain they pass Adam & Courtney who are on their way up. Adam starts a timer on his clock to see how far behind they are. Taylor & Courtney estimate they are about 45 minutes ahead.

Teams arrive at the administration building (19km 19min) in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam
 3(+0) Dylan & Kwame

--- Quote ---ROUTE INFO

Exit this Race through
the gift shop

Search the shops of
Banff for souvenirs that
represent people, places
or things you have seen
during this season of the
Race. Then correctly
display them to receive
your next clue.

--- End quote ---

Teams must make their way to Banff Avenue (500m) and search the 10 marked stores for souvenirs representing things they have seen or met during the race. All the souvenirs they may take are marked with a race flag on the bottom. There are multiple souvenirs scattered among ten stores and teams must find at least two marked souvenirs for each of the 11 legs (there seem to be more than two available). Once they have collected the souvenirs they think they need they must make their way back to the administration building and display them in the correct order.

 "I hate shopping", Courtney (police)
"Oh my gosh, hi-life, I don't wanna carry that one", the shopping brings back painful memories for Courtney (police)

Adam & Courtney have a more methodical approach where Courtney makes a note of what they find and which leg it belongs to as they find them.

"Adam & Courtney showed up", Taylor comments to the camera
"Yeah, we did", Adam overhears and comments

Both teams get a sense of urgency by this meeting. Taylor & Courtney realize they are not safe and Adam & Courtney that there is still a chance to catch up. And a while later Dylan & Kwame turn up so it turns into a three-way race.

Taylor & Courtney head back to the administration building once they have collected 22 souvenirs.

"We need one from Banff and one from Jakarta", Courtney (nurse) is very organized

As Taylor & Courtney place their souvenirs on the podium they realize that they have three for two of the legs and as they just collected 22 souvenirs they are missing two (from legs 8 & 11). They have to go back to town to find more.

When Adam & Courtney get back to the administration building they are happy to see that Taylor & Courtney's bags are still here. They feel they have a chance. They quickly place their souvenirs on the podium, but are told that it is not correct. The viewer get to see that they have 21 of 22. Their only mistake is that they have a zombie statue on the Mexico leg. They think it represents the day of the dead when it really refers to the Zombie paintball. They start rearranging things.

As Adam & Courtney are rearranging their souvenirs Taylor & Courtney come back with their last two souvenirs. They quickly place them on their podium and call for a check. They are told it is incorrect. They quickly zero in on the Banff leg, one of their souvenirs is a airplane, and they think that is wrong (and they are correct). They realize they have to go back to town again.

Back in town Taylor & Courtney have trouble finding another Banff souvenir. They look through all the stores and eventually they find one more marked store which they previously missed and here they find helicopter souvenirs.

Meanwhile back at the administration building Courtney & Adam are desperately trying different combinations.

"I would be shocked if Adam & Courtney beat us", Courtney (police) on their way back

And that is when Adam realizes that the Zombies represent the paintball challenge, not day of the dead. Luckily for them they brought any extra souvenirs they found during their search so they have one more from Mexico.

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
 1(+1) Courtney & Adam
 2(-1) Taylor & Courtney
 3(+0) Dylan & Kwame

The next clue is a route info which directs them to the end of the race. The finish line is at the fifth hole at the Fairmont Banff Springs golf course. To get here teams must traverse over and raft down the Bow river. Once they land they must find the Tunnel nine golf course and the fifth hole.

Getting to the golf course is no problem. But then finding hole #5 turns out to be a bit harder. Specially since it turns out there are two golf courses here, and they landed on the wrong one. The golfers they meet do not seem to know exactly which way to go to hole #5. So we get lots of shots of teams running around the golf course.

At least of the first two teams. Dylan & Kwame seem still be back in town looking for souvenirs.

Teams reach the finish line in the following order:
1(+0) Courtney & Adam, win the $250,000, an around the world trip and a pair of sponsor cars.
 2(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 3(+0) Dylan & Kwame

At the mat we learn that Courtney & Adam are getting married in November, and they invite all the other teams.

"It's hard for these heroes not to help", Adam how the other teams have helped them during the race
"It really doesn't matter where you go in this country, there's always something new and beautiful to find", Dylan
"I'm just truly thankful to be Canadian. This is a land where you don't have to look alike to be brothers and sisters", Kwame
