Not really.

1. Teams got to experience a Speed Train
2. The promotion of "3 Asian Citites"
3. And it was to visit the Montreal Deli!!!!
4. Who knows, they may have had cheaper flights to Bangkok
5. Prob something to do with Sinorama too!

Apparently Shanghai was a last minute change. The plan was to fly direct to Bangkok, but smog forced the cancellation of the flights from Beijing that day. So they hastily arranged that detour to Shanghai via train rather than wait for the smog to clear.  Getting planning permission to film in the streets of Shanghai is complex and has to be planned in advance, that's why it was mostly them indoors in the deli there (spliced with stock footage of the Shanghai skyline).So...weather.

Does that mean that they cut a roadblock from Bangkok, because it would be weird to only have the puppet task and the detour (with fast forward) in the episode.

Fascinating, I'd blame it more on the terrible Beijing pollution rather than weather, then. As clearly they were also promoting tourism to the area, editing helped to avoid showing any of that. It must have been very last minute, and they had to rely Sinorama on additional support, for added spotlight. If it was planned they could've just done a moving mat like was done on TAR18 after the end of Leg 2 in Australia.
