Agree with you. The pre-merge was phenomenal. I couldn't wait to see the next episodes. But the twist killed Vavau tribe and the post-merge. It was painful to watch ex-Vavau tried to do something but nobody wanted to work with them. I was a fan of Kate, Sue, Conner but the were eliminated immediately after the merge.
I didn't expect to see Kristie as the winner. She deserved more than Lee and she survived 20 tribal councils but she didn't make any big move.

I loved Aus Survivor 2016. While I do acknowledge that there were some slow episodes (particularly around merger), it was overall a good product.
If I were to rank all of the seasons of Survivor I have seen (for reference, I have seen most of the US show, all 3 seasons of the Australian show (including the 2002 and 2006 celebrity seasons which I would rather forget), the 2 seasons of the British show and 3 seasons of the South African show), Aus Survivor 2016 ranks somewhere in the middle. It was an average season because it had some all-time great moments (most notably, the finale) but it also had some terrible moments (a lot of the early merged phase).
