TAR 27 Ratings
« on: September 26, 2015, 09:28:04 PM »
Tied with the 25 premiere =/

"On ABC, the season premiere of Last Man Standing earned a 1.1, down two tenths from the 1.3 last season's premiere earned. The season premiere of Shark Tank earned a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating, down from the 1.9 last year's premiere earned.   20/20 earned a 1.3, way up from last week's 0.7 adults 18-49 rating.

On CBS, The Amazing Race earned a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating, matching last fall's 1.1 adults 18-49 premiere rating. The season premiere of Hawaii Five-0 earned a 1.0, down two tenths from the 1.2 adults 18-49 rating last fall's premiere earned. The season premiere of Blue Bloods earned a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating, up from the 1.2 last fall's premiere earned.

On the CW, Masters of Illusion notched a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating."

Not a series low, but it only increased by 250K viewers from the 25 premiere (5.79 mil this year). Here's hoping we keep this average or even hit the average of 6 million up done by 26!

I'm really nervous for TAR and I hope it makes it! ;_;

If the viewership is down on all of them surely its just because less people are watching tv..

The broadcast nets are seeing a roughly 20 percent drop in the overnights across the board on all nets and all nights, on average, compared to last year in the fall premieres.

TAR staying even or rising in the overnights is a good sign in that environment, because live streaming is become a larger and larger piece of the viewing audience, in addition to the time-shifted viewing.

TV Rating is really confusing for me, I know that rating is more important than viewers. 1.2 means that 1.2% of total viewers who tune in on TV during that time interval between age 18-49 are watching a particular show. Am I right?

Then, how can Last Man Standing which has more viewers, has lower rating than The Amazing Race?

The total audience means just that -- everyone who is watching of any age. In the example you are asking about, it means fewer people in the 18-49 demo watched that show live or time delayed on the same day.

Which is why we waiting for live plus three days (which are good) and live plus seven day (if we hear about it; they're usually even better.)

This move also shows how weird CBS is lol.

Here was Madame Secretary's Season One ratings, which took the TAR timeslot last year:

Show content

And this was how TAR24 (the last Sunday season did):

Show content

Even though MS had more viewers overall (because of the audience 50+ watching it tbh idk), it ended rough.
TAR24 (despite the worst ratings it ever had on Sunday) had a higher ratings share, which was much more important.

If MS continues to fail then I hope TAR goes back to Sundays where it belongs.

No, I mean the method they use to determine the number. Are they using some kind of survey, or intricate application or something, or sample?

Theo, Nielsen uses a combination of methods, but it is a large sample selected to reflect the U.S. demographically, and the actual people in the sample are rotated every few years. IIRC it's one third every year. The people meters are used and every person in a household participate.
Nielsen also uses a diary sample in addition to supplement the overall sample for sweeps periods, i.e., a large sample to measure each local market.
There are other ways to measure time shifted viewing, i.e., data from cable and satellite providers and the various streaming services, which come into play for mobile devices smartphones as well as TV, that are used for live plus three (days), seven days or 30 days.
One thing to keep in mind is that the networks no long pay much attention to the overnight (live plus same day) numbers, only the media uses them. The size of the live audience for virtually all shows has dropped tremendously as measured overnight, but that trend is deceptive due to a lot of factors, such as a broader range of choices on cable and streaming services, and the ever increasing growth of time shifted and cord cutting viewing. Except for sports and live coverage of breaking news events, the shrinkage in the live audiences for broadcast shows has been significant and noticeable. So far this TV season the shrinkage has been roughly 15 - 20%, and TAR was one of the few to be even with last year.

Thanks for explaining TS!

Theo, in case it is not clear, they use a machine attached to your TV/DVR (with permission) to monitor what is watched. And I do have friends who have had it longer than 3 years.

Nielsen ratings just seem immensely complex. :umn: Why do the they assume an 18-49 age demographic instead of generally using data of all ages? And how do the mathematicians working on ratings calculate within that range? To me it just sounds like, "You just turned 50! Happy half-centennial and, whoops, your TV is immediately cut off from the ratings count! You have no say for primetime." I need a better understanding.

It's not that they assume that, it's just the fact that 18-49 is the more valuable age to advertisers, especially in this day and age.

They DO count oldies, but the weight isn't as much.

I think we're doing pretty well so far.  As has been mentioned, with the continued erosion of broadcast TV ratings this year (since there's more and more cable networks, plus more and more streaming options, plus more and more DVR/on-demand usage), the fact that we're even or increasing a tad is a great thing.  A couple of 1.2 ratings so far is a good thing.

I follow tvbythenumbers.com every day, and bookmarked an article about a year ago that said how many Nielsen families are around and how many boxes are in each demographic.  I find this stuff quite fascinating, so have a look.  http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/10/05/how-many-people-are-in-the-nielsen-tv-ratings-panel/310975/

We matched last week's 1.9 in the Live +3!

Now hopefully it improves when this season does as well, I'm not 100% feeling it right now but hopefully it gets better once we leave Argentina!

I think The Amazing Race is doing better than last year I remember it would adjust up 0.7 in Live+7 at best and now it does it in three days. I could be wrong though :D Also there haven't been any Live+7 ratings yet since TAR and Survivor started right?

There's not only the Live plus seven time shifted DVR or On Demand cable viewing, there's all the alternate platform viewing; and the binge watchers who come in at some point (usually in the Live plus 30 day data).

I've said before, and what little that has come out tends to support the view, that TAR's overall viewership at the Live plus 30 level is unchanged over many seasons of the 10-11 million range we had over all of the early seasons before time-shifted, cord cutting, and online or downloaded viewing became the rule rather than the exception.

What is significant about these numbers for this season and last year is that those live numbers are stable if not rising slightly in an environment where average live viewing of broadcast network shows and live plus same day and live plus three overall has dropped another 15-20 %. It does support CBS's decision to use TAR on Friday nights as it is not affecting the ultimate size of the viewer audience for TAR, it's just not all at the time the show is going out live on the network feed.

Friday's episode adjusted up to a 1.2 in the final ratings released today, so we are up week to week.  Good results.

Next week could take a little hit since its Halloween weekend and also going against game 3 of the world series. We shall see.

Additionally, even more good news, I've been tracking a new website called TV Ratings Guide. This varies from the other Cancellation trackers, as they actually track Reality Shows as well!

Their latest data for Halloween (with a hilariously campy Scream reference to symbolise cancellation) is as follows:

"This week on CBS, Survivor is still surviving from being hunted by Ghostface, and is certain to Live. The Amazing Race is running away from being killed nicely, but is still not far away enough. Still, TAR is Likely to stay alive.

On NBC, The Voice scored a 3.0 and a 2.6. The Voice is still certain to outrun Ghostface! Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris was running from Ghostface, but has since tripped and is now More Likely to be Killed by Ghostface.

On ABC, Dancing with the Stars is not anywhere close to dancing with the devil, and is certain to live. Shark Tank is above water, and away from Ghostface. Shark Tank is also certain to live.

I'm glad that TAR is likely to stay alive, even if it's not certain to live.

We hit a season low of a 1.1 rating with 5.87 million viewer, and finished third in the timeslot :/

Yeah we've been darting between 1.1 and 1.2 all season, but finishing 3rd in the slot isn't great. Hopefully MasterChef got a bump from it being the premiere episode and will drop down and give us back that tenth next week.

And we are still stuck in 3rd Place =/

Consistency with a 1.1 in the demo, but a slight 0.04 million viewer drop.

Can't believe I'm saying this but I'm glad ratings are low to show producers the type of teams they cast on the race first and foremost affects the ratings.

Adjusted up to a 1.2 and back to being 2nd in its timeslot because of viewers! :hrt:

That 1.2 was a mistake, however the final numbers are also 1.1

One other thing, C+3 numbers are the numbers that are important for the networks. Therefore, only the views of people who watched the commercials during the first 3 days matter...

Season low last night.  It appears Master Chef may be dipping into our viewer pool a little bit.  Shame as I thought last night's episode was great.  Here's hoping for a recovery.

TAR WAY DOWN in viewership. Viewership is at a series low (first time ever the show has gone under five million viewers), but the demo went up two tenths and we beat MasterChef Junior to be back as the #2 Friday show. Yay?

Fixed ratings via TVSeriesFinale, not a series low (series low per viewers is still the TAR26 African two-parter) but not up by a lot, only up by a tenth!

Spoiler TV is more reliable and is always the first out with their numbers. :)

SpoilerTV gets their numbers from Showbuzzdaily, chances are about 95% that the mistake was done by SpoilerTV while copying the numbers.

Edit: I just noticed that you have changed your post.

As much as I'm hating this season... TAR never deserves low numbers. *sighs*

Here's hoping it improves for the season finale.

I don't know. As seen on the Facebook page, and here too, Green's presence in the finale is going to keep a lot of people from watching.

A lot of TV series get such comments, but those don't really affect the ratings. Most of the people that comment on stuff online watch stuff on DVR or by other means, and even more of them aren't even in the Nielsen families, so them watching or not really doesn't count towards the ratings. Unless somehow all the Nielsen people went like "OK We hate Justin, no TAR."

“The Amazing Race” crossed the finish line with its lowest-rated finale ever on Friday, dipping 0.1 from last week and recording a 1.0. It also tied a series low overall; the previous finale low was a 1.1 in the spring 2015 season.

The irony is that viewership was its HIGHEST since the TAR26 second Thailand leg.

If this is a good sign for 28 and it gets higher, pray for the ratings!  :<3

Well let's hope the older crowd that are boasting the total numbers stick around for next season and the younger crown get drawn in next season with the Internet celebrities.

The numbers are going to be interesting to see. Many of the regulars are voicing their displeasure about this theme, but there's going to be a ton of one-time one-team viewers in their place.

I have to remind people that the advertisers are looking a Live plus three day while CBS looks at Live plus Seven, which we would hear about, on average about once or twice a season because the TV trade sites still want to ficus on Live plus Same Day, erroneously. If Live plus three is an imrpovement over Live plus Same Day, then Live plus Seven will be more so. And Live plus Seven also allows viewers who time shift past the weekend to be brought in the totals (which is more likely to happen on holiday or quasi-holiday weekends.
