This is an incorrect statement. The statement might have been true in the days of the Soviet Union, but I have no data source to check. Kazakhstan is an independent country, it is not part of Russia. Lots of flights to both Astana and Almaty, now, from foreign destinations. There is actually one direct flight from KL.

Oh interesting, I was going on TAR13 which went India-Moscow-Almaty

Only one team in TAR13 traveled to Almaty on that routing, Terrance/Sarah. It cost them their Russian visas. If they had not been eliminated in Almaty, they could not continued to race, since they no longer had visas to enter Russia. They also were not able to do decoy work in Moscow.
Air:
If they do Canberra they're going to do it through another major city (probably 2 legs, that's why I doubt Canberra) because nobody flies there :lol:
