I think everyone is getting confused because Canada reports temperatures in Celsius. -1 C is about 30 degrees Fahrenheit. So it's just below freezing. I looked up Iqaluit on the Weather Underground http://www.wunderground.com and the high on May 18th was 30 F and the Low was 8 F. The average high for May 18th is 39 F and the average low is 26 F. It may surprise you that it's that high (it surprised me), but when you have 18 1/2 hours of sunlight and are near the ocean (which is at least around 32 F), it's hard to drop all the way to 0 F.
