I think he's just being paranoid. When the blondes passed'em after they retrieved the detour clue, they were in fact currently in LAST PLACE at that time.
What suprised me though is that these two along with the blondes was only 6 Hours behind John&Jessica. I thought they were like 9 or 10 hours behind.

Teams would have saved a ton of time if they were allowed to walk to the priest. The water taxis took them once around the island! Map here.

It was 1 3/4 hours behind, as Max/Katie started at 914am and Caroline/Jennifer at 915am and the other teams could not leave the dock until 730am.

I observe that David/Connor wasted a lot of time by going back for the snorkel gear. They could have just switched at no penalty to the Take a Trunk DETOUR. If they could handle snorkel then that scuba gear should not have been a problem.
