Invasion is a very interesting choice of words.....Where did they invade from???  India?? Mynmmar???

It is called The Mautam/Mautaam. Rather than an invasion, it is the rapid cyclic reproduction of rats when the bamboo blooms and fruits every 50 years. Huge exponential growth of individual rats. In some research studies, some females have been seen to have up to 8 litters of new babies in a matter of months (when normal is 2). As long as the bamboo fruit is available for them to eat, they are not a problem..but when that runs out......all the rats start hitting rice crops and grain storage areas to survive. Many migrate to garbage dumps, etc in populated areas such as Chittagong. I guess that is what you mean by invasion, invasion of the cites from the countryside.

It is a very interesting phenomenom. It does not hit every area the same year...but it about a 5 year wave that spreads across Assam, Mynmmar and eastern Bangladesh. So much grain is lost to the rats, that famine usually occur right after the Mautam. Lots of records going back to the early 1800s, with a lot of good science from the last two occurances.
