Jonathan clearly has an operatic voice and could be singing in Covent Garden, La Scala or the Met in future years. Simon is right that Charlotte does not have the same vocal level. However, he has to judge them on their sound; their sound as a duo is first-class and will take them far in this competition, probably to the finals. Remember that Susan Boyle did not win her season; she only placed second.
This is a nice example of not judging the book by its cover. Simon judged on first appearances but was willing to reconsider when the evidence was overwhelming that he was wrong.

I loved Charlotte & Jonathan! Another favourite of mine is Ryan O'Shaughnessy. Having a cute story like that doesn't hurt either.
