From the two diaries available so far, we can piece together what Phil did in Australia:
11/22 arrive soon after 10am on QF12 and hustle to Shelly Beach
11/22 stand-up intro to pit stop
11/22 pit stop check-in
11/22 on way back to Sydney do stand-up at OceanWorld in Manly
11/23 fly SYD BHQ ZL878 dep. 1820 arr. 2010 and get some rest in Broken Hill
11/23 stand-up intro to pit stop
11/23 pit stop check-in
Path 1 - spend 2nd night Broken Hill, get ZL857 11/24 0630 0910 (actual 0933) BHQ SYD but then stuck in Sydney until QF21 to Narita 11/24 late evening
Path 2 (preferred) - get ZL4833 1805 1920 BHQ ADL, connecting with XM7053 2015 2240; 11/24 JL772 SYD NRT 0915 1656

There is a quicker, more direct way Phil can get back to Sydney and catch QF21 on the 23rd and get a full day's headstart.

Looks like Phil left Broken Hill on Rex Regional ZL863 @ 1325 to Dubbo and then from there on same flight number to Sydney. Arriving at 1705 with plenty of time to catch QF21 to Narita. Dubbo is a town between Broken Hill and Sydney. It is on the same highway and the train passes through there too on the way to Sydney.
So it looks like he was in Narita starting a nice day off before teams even arrived in Sydney on the train.

The connection through Adelaide does look good for production people that Peach thinks left Broken Hill about the time teams were at the station getting ready for the train.
