I thought it was a great start and Wendy Williams could well be the first one out. She really was stiff. I was surprised by how well Ralph Macchio did.
'DWTS' -- light on 'Stars,' heavy on 'Dancing'
March 22, 2011 ι Jarett Wieselman
Season 12 of "Dancing with the Stars" kicked off with a star-studded (mostly in the audience though) premiere last night, and while I very much felt like an owl at the start -- who? who? who? -- by the end, I was wowed by a handful of the celebrities assembled to compete for Bruno's uncomfortable compliments and America's votes.
One of the most promising performers was first out of the gate: Disney star Chelsea Kane kicked off the night with a youthful and energetic Foxtrot, choreographed by her partner Mark Ballas. But her charm wasn't limited to the dancefloor -- Chelsea also sparkled in the pre-performance package, meaning she's got the goods to take it all the way. As long as America backs up the judges positive scores.
Things fell off a cliff from there as Wendy Williams looked stiff, uncomfortable and -- shockingly -- timid on the dancefloor throughout her Cha-Cha. The judges weren't very kind with their scores, meaning she might have to buy some extra wigs to dry those tears during next week's elimination.
Her future on the show took another hit when Wendy became bookended by better boogiers as Hines Ward followed with a Cha-Cha that was everything her wasn't -- fun, effortless and filled with pizazz. The rollercoaster continued as that high was immediately followed by another low courtesy of Petra Nemcova. A heavy-footed foxtrot left me worried that her amazing partner Dmitry Chaplin won't be seeing the finals again this season. I also doubt his "SYTYCD" cohort Chelsea Hightower's chances of making it very far this season. Not because her partner, rapper Romeo, is unskilled -- he's decent on the dancefloor -- but his attitude is already irking me after just one pre-performance package.
Then we were given the great Sugar Ray Leonard who floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee -- in the boxing ring. On the dancefloor, he was a bit stiff and sloppy, but the judges see hope for him. Personally I'd rather see the equally problematic yet promising Kendra Wilkinson bunnyhop over him as the weeks wear on. She not only brings an amazing energy to the show and practice room, but there are definitely skills in her bag of tricks -- I just think she needs to focus more and not let the crowd's energy get her all riled up because every time she got excited, her Cha-Cha became sloppy.
The night's first major surprise came when Karate Kid Ralph Macchio crane kicked his way onto the show. His rehearsal footage -- filled with missteps and flubs -- had me terrified America would (wax on, wax) off him from the show almost immediately, but any fears were instantly swatted away the instant his Foxtrot with Karina Smirnoff began. Airy and amazing, his graceful footwork and classy posture makes him a premiere night frontrunner.
I can't say the same for Chris Jericho and Mike Catherwood -- two dudes who dance like dudes. And that is not a compliment. Chris was stiffer than the boards he breaks over opponents backs throughout his Cha-Cha with Cheryl Burke while Mike was prepared to be the worst dancer and he was. But his secret weapon will be that amazing sense of humor he sprinkled around for seven amazing minutes. Mike could be someone who ekes through by the skin of his teeth every week because people like hearing what he has to say. And unlike last year's talentless third-place contestant, I'd be A-OK if Mike benefits from being a trainwreck.
Finally we had the most famous "Star" competing this season: Kirstie Alley. Paired with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, no one quite knew what to expect from her -- save for an amazingly self-depreciating sense of humor. And while she brought the fat jokes in spades ("if someone told me to haul ass, it would take two trips") she also brought some fancy footwork to the floor throughout her sassy and skilled Cha-Cha.
After night one, I'm predicting a Ralph Macchio vs. Kirstie Alley finale, which would also be amazing since their "DWTS" partners used to be engaged ... and I don't think things ended on good terms. So seeing their rivalry all season long promises to be just as exciting as the dancefloor firework.
