We have seen teams at check in. Would you be able to checkin on a flight leaving in 8hours time??

Yes, you can... however, everyone is assuming they are on QF21 departing 2230 that gets to NRT (assuming Tokyo is next) by 0615 tomorrow.
CX via HKG to NRT leaves about 1540 gets in at 0600.

And the report above that one borrowed a phone for 'flight info' to get on a 4pm flight... sounds like they are on CX100 to HKG at 1540 with a connector in HKG on to Japan.
