Perhaps the thing left behind is the Golden Egg which teams were supposed to carry with them to the pit stop. In past TARs teams have located something and had to carry it with them to the end.

Everyone is assuming from this clue "in a haste to avoid elimination, one team leaves behind something very important" that it is this leg. For all we know its the golden egg or something.
