Hell's Kitchen 5 Episode 6 Recap

We start with the usual review of last week's episode. The tension between Carol and Andrea is highlighted, just in case you missed it last week. Ramsay calls J lazy. Andrea screwed up several beef Wellingtons. Colleen had multiple problems culminating in a dessert that had frozen pear on it.

Ramsay announces that Hell's Kitchen will do a bar mitzvah celebration for the first time. The menu will be hamburger, beef brisket, and chicken soup. In walk the mother and grandmother of the celebrant. They say a little about what he likes. Ramsay says he wants a gourmet approach to hamburger, beef brisket and chicken soup and each team has 45 minutes to develop a menu containing them with new twists and cook it. The challenge will be judged by the bar mitzvah boy Max himself. There is some controversy on the Red team Burger because Carol was not listening to her colleagues' feedback on the choice of cheese and on cooking it medium-well vs. medium. The dishes are:
Blue traditional Chicken Noodle Soup with vegetables, fresh pasta and rice balls vs. Red Spring Chicken Soup with vegetables, pasta and pea shoots                                                                                the simpler men's soup wins
Blue (Ben) Beef Brisket fairly plain vs. Red (LA) Beef Brisket braised with Cherry Barbecue sauce       the higher flavor women's brisket wins due to the BBQ sauce
Blue Kobe Beef burger homemade sundried tomato mayonnaise again fairly straight up Red Hamburger Kobe beef, veal, and lamb with fries plus blue cheese and sauteed onions and Portobello mushrooms. apple aioli the men win because he didn't like the Women's cheese.

The Men win the Challenge and get an afternoon of pampering at a salon, which they all enjoy. The women get one of the easier tasks, to set up the dining room for the bar mitzvah. Someone decided that boys that age like to shoot baskets and play that game with the flippers, so a mini basketball halfcourt is set up. Jean-Pierre is frustrated when the mother tells him that she has hired a party planner, the inescapable Francisco from past seasons. He always is in conflict with Jean-Pierre. The actor playing Francisco goes way over the top and it's a hoot to see him in action.

The guests are as many family and friends who can fit around the perimeter of the basketball court, maybe about 40. Ramsay announces that this service will include each of the winning dishes from the Challenge. So it's time for the Carol vs. Andrea show to start. Andrea is on the Appetizers station and for the second week in a row she appears brain-dead. J is on the Appetizers station for Blue and he is having a problem that quickly resolves. Francisco is having a great time shooting baskets, but Jean-Pierre comes over and tells him that the basket are reserved for the young guests and that he is to stay away from it.  Coi is on the Meat station, frequently the one that sinks the careers of Hell's Kitchen chef. She forgot to put burgers on and says that this happens a lot to her and it's no big deal. Ramsay thinks it's a big deal and he rants and raves. She then undercooks the hamburgers so they have to be done over. Throughout the evening there is sniping between Carol and Andrea. The Red team is ordered by Ramsay to take time out to carry the Horah with chair Lifts. Ben is sad that he is not asked to be part of the Horah festivities since he is Jewish.

Ramsay has a surprise for the mitzvah boy and is it ever something. 7 of the Harlem Globetrooters come out on the court and do one of their brief routines. They give Max a Globetrotters uniform. That set somebody back a good $10,000. That is probably less than Francisco got for his acting fees. Francisco brings out a huge decorated cake and manages to deliberately obliterate it as he bumps into Jean-Pierre. The chefs are forced to do desserts on no notice but it all worked out.

Dinner service is over and Ramsay says both teams did well in completing it. He decides to award the win to the team which tried harder consistently throughout the night. That is the Blue team. Then we come to the dilemma of the night. Andrea was clearly the worst and deserved to go home in my opinion. The next worst was undoubtedly Coi. Ramsay tells Andrea she made a significant turnaround by the end of the evening and she gets to select the nominees (which we know make absolutely no difference to him; they're just another opportunity for  Ramsay's sadism to have chefs twisting in the wind on the gallows). Andrea comes back and says she can't decide. Ramsay tells her she has to, so she picks Coi (no surprise) and LA (huh?). LA had no part in anything negative tonight so this was a poor choice. Her other choices were herself, Carol and Paula and Carol and Paula both performed well so it would have been laughable to nominate them. Basically, Andrea was avoiding nominating herself by nominating LA. Ramsay of course saw right through that. He polled the women's team for who should be eliminated. coi, Carol and LA all said Andrea. Paula says Coi. Andrea can be assumed to have said  Ramsay picks Coi to leave, stating that anyone who can't cook burgers does not belong in Hell's Kitchen.

Now, here's what I think really happened. Ramsay knew that Andrea was the proper person for elimination, but I suspect that the producers intervened. They have this big conflict going on between Carol and Andrea and it makes excellent television. They will milk this for several more episodes, probably until Carol and Andrea are the last two from the Red team remaining. Although Coi did not deserve elimination she was the only available sacrificial lamb.

An interview with Coi:

Hell’s Kitchen: Coi Says Andrea or Lacey Should Have Gone Home Instead

One of the strongest contestants on Hell’s Kitchen went home last night, probably due to a combination of bad luck and team politics. Coi was quick, efficient and knew her way around the kitchen, but she was let go anyways. We chatted with the kitchen’s latest victim where she told us what she really thinks about two particularly difficult contestants on the show and let us in on a side of Chef that you might be surprised to hear about.

What would you have done differently? Either on last night’s show or throughout the whole show.
Not to sound cocky or anything but nothing.

And why do you feel that way?
I think I did a really good job up until last night. And I honestly feel that if you put in everything that you have including your strength and knowledge and there’s nothing to go back on.

Who would you have liked to pick in your place to go home?
Andrea.

Why?
She was a brand new, if I’m not wrong, she’s a culinary student who had just taken a liking to culinary arts. And the rest of us, excluding Colleen, we all went to school and had out degrees and had been working in a kitchen for a while. And Andrea was applied knowledge more than experience. A big mouth will get you far. If you act like you know what you’re doing I guess it shows that you know what you’re doing.

Did you connect with anyone in particular on the show?
Carol and LA are my girls.

What about someone you just didn’t click with?
That was Lacey. She was not someone that I would hang out with on a regular. And the fact that I went home before her, I’m going to hear it from everybody. But so far all of my friends are my family. They have said that I did a wonderful job on the show and I proved that I’m a good chef.

So you defiantly think that Lacey didn’t deserve to get this far?
Yeah, she should have been gone the very first episode.

What do you think happened? Is it just sort of team politics?
Maybe for the drama. That’s all that I can say. She sucks.

Why was she picked to go over to the men’s team? Was there a new rule where you guys changed teams?
Well he wanted to make the teams even. He got rid of our dead weight, why give our best player away? And she was a big burden and they got rid of Seth and gave Lacey so it was basically the same thing.

What is your most memorable moment with Chef Ramsay?
A really good moment was when we won the Asian challenge with the Asian Fusion and we got to see him in a sumo suit. Just so see that lighthearted guy in him, like a glow. Because he is known to be a jerk, which he is. And just being able to see him outside of Hell’s Kitchen enjoying the moment for what it was amazing and fun.

What’s up next for you?
My initial plan was to open a restaurant at the end of this year but not that’s not going to happen, I would love way too much money because the economy is terrible. So I’ve decided to design a chef coat for women. We have come up with very intricate designs that can be for any size women. Out chef clothing says one size fits most. And I can’t handle that. I don’t like it frumpy. If I’m going to be at an appearance I want to look my best. So we are just going over some aspects. The bust line, waistline, and also in the hips.

Where can fans view your stuff?
It’s not online yet. I’m working on a web site. Actually I have someone working on that today. It’s because they are not ready to order. But the company is my sister and me. It’s out names put together, Sico wear.
We’ll be launching that in the next nine months.

Thanks for another great recap Apskip. We just finished watching this and I think you are absolutely correct. Coi did not deserve to go home, Andrea should have. She is not a team player nor a team leader. She misunderstood the timing and created animosity. Coi has class. I know she knows how to cook a hamburger... something else was happening that we probably didn't see because of editing.

An interview with Coi:

Exclusive Interview: Coi of 'Hell's Kitchen'

There was injustice in the air last night in Hell’s Kitchen when Chef Ramsay selected Andrea, whom the rest of her team thought had performed the poorest during service, to nominate two of her own for elimination. She selected Coi and LA of the Red Team for the chopping block, and in the end, it was Coi who paid dearly for her mistakes at the burger station during the team’s special bar mitzvah service.

BuddyTV had a chance this morning to talk to this Texas native who is full of surprises—the first of which is that she is only 22. A self-described “diva” before entering the competition, Coi instead seemed mature and team-oriented, never flying off the handle like so many of her competitors. But in the end it was her nerves, not lack of skill, during the high-stress dinner services that cost Coi a shot at running Ramsay’s newest restaurant at the Borgata Resort in Atlantic City.

Read on for what Coi had to say about that shocking elimination, her take on this season’s best and worst competitors, and her next exciting adventure in the culinary realm.

When Coi, a café chef from Austin, heard that the infamous Chef Ramsay would be holding auditions for Hell’s Kitchen, she wasn’t alone in her hopes to get on the show.

“We heard that they were having auditions in Austin, and my sister’s a chef also, and she said, ‘Lets do it!’ I’m not afraid of anything, and that’s the honest to God truth,” said Coi,

But even with no fears going in, Coi soon discovered that it’s called Hell’s Kitchen for a reason.

“It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I went in with the complete expectation of being able to soar through this with no problems, no issues, no bumps in the road, because I do consider myself a great chef. It’s a lot harder than in looks.”

And it’s not just that the 16 chefs have the world-renowned and frequently terrifying Chef Gordon Ramsay watching their every move as they work—it’s the “whole process” of the show that wears on you, says Coi.

“It’s being kept on your tippy-toes,” she said. “Being run down to the ground. No sleep. And then definitely being bunked with somebody like Lacey will stir up that fire in me.”

What about Lacey, the 24-year-old corporate chef who from the beginning drew well-deserved criticism from every corner for her bad attitude and many mistakes? It might seem surprising that, six episodes in, she remains on the program despite her repeated mistakes, but that’s the risk of reality TV, where the promise of drama can trump real talent.

“She’s got no skills,” said Coi. “I hate talking so bad about her, but just looking on the show and seeing how bad she did so many times, and didn’t go home, and then my one hiccup, and I’m sent packing. It makes me wonder what exactly that’s all about.”

And how about Andrea, the self-appointed leader of the Red team, who made her own blunders last night?

“With the cutting and pasting, they’re [the producers] going to make things look a lot worse than what they are,” said Coi about her own mistakes that night. “Andrea, on the other hand, looked a lot better than what was actually going on. My focus was my station, and I tried my hardest not to pay attention to what was happening. But I did see she had a lot of confusion, a lot of hiccups. A lot more than what I had. But Ramsay didn’t see it.”

So Coi was sent packing, even after drawing Ramsay’s attention to Andrea’s errors. And as the competition heats up, Coi doubts that Andrea will survive for much longer. “I don’t think she’s worked in the industry long enough to actually know how to manage and function in a real kitchen,” Coi said. “I’m really hoping for Carol and LA.”

In the end, Coi said, “It was an experience of a lifetime. I have taken so much away from it when it comes to my attitude.” But if asked to do it all over again, she said, “I wouldn’t.”

Instead, the chef has chosen to forge her way into a whole new, but related, field: the world of culinary fashion.

“I’ve noticed that fashion-wise, there’s not much for the culinary world. There are different prints and different styles, but it’s generally one size fits most. And my designs are specifically for women,” said Coi, once again accompanied by her chef-sister on this venture.

“My motto is, like a lot of people, if you look good, you feel good. So my sister and I are putting our heads together. I want my girls to look good. We don’t need to look like men. Let’s look hot! Why not?”

Her designs should be available within the year, said Coi, and it sounds as though there may be some unconscious inspiration from her time in Hell: the "hot" line of chef’s jackets and pants are not only highly adjustable for women’s bodies--they’re also flame retardant.
