Another thought on the editing. Renny was livid that Jerry wouldn't have told his wife that he loves her, especially since she is sick and he is always saying that he misses her. She couldn't get over the fact that he didn't tell her. She mentioned this several times.

Jerry said that he talked to his daughter as well, but the viewers didn't see that. So, my thinking is, when he said I love you at the end of his phone call, he was really saying that to his daughter, but since viewers didn't see him talking to her they all think he said I love you to his wife. It may be a small thing, but I think most viewers would have been disappointed to know that he didn't say that to his wife. Sure makes it look like he did, though, didn't it?
