DWTS Watch: Lance & Lacey Lead the Way

The final four performed on Dancing With the Stars Monday night and with the highest combined score of the night, Lance Bass and partner Lacey Schwimmer proved that the show must go on — even when the shoe falls off.

In a first for the hit reality show, Lance, who has already danced barefoot this season, accidentally had a shoe fall off during his jitterbug. But the former NSync-er didn’t miss a beat and got the highest score of the night on the dance, a 29. And with a 28 on his mambo, Lance easily led the competitors with a cumulative 57 out of 60.

After the show, Lance told OK! how it felt when he lost his shoe. “At first, panic, of course, because I was concerned with safety," he explained. "But after I realized I’d be fine, I just ate it up. It was so much fun. It made me smile and laugh. I had a really good time.”

Adds Lacey, “I think that he’s by far the most improved in this entire competition and it showed tonight.”

Despite his high scores, however, Lance doesn’t think he's a.... um, shoe-in, to make it to next week’s finale. “It’s anyone’s game," he says. "It’s a good competition.”

Meanwhile, Brooke Burke, who has been the favorite all season with partner Derek Hough, had her first bad dance, a jive that judge Len Goodman called a “disaster” and earned only a 21.

“It was a hiccup," Brooke sighed to OK! backstage. "I loved that dance. I don’t know really what went wrong and it was hard to find my way back into it.” As for the harsh results from the judges, she said she's taking like an adult: “I know when I do things wrong and I can totally take it.”

Luckily for DWTS’ golden couple, their second dance, the salsa, was a return back to form, earning a 28 for a combined score of 49, good enough for a tie for second overall for the night.

“I’m really happy that we pulled it together for the salsa,” Brooke told OK!

“She killed it,” Derek said. “That’s the test of a true champion — messing up a little bit and coming back strong.”

Gridiron great Warren Sapp and partner Kym Johnson hoped they’d done enough to get to the finals, also earning a combined score of 49 for their two dances.

“Hopefully we’ve got a shot,” Warren told OK!. Asked about the judging on Monday, he said, “It looked like they were out for blood tonight! But I really enjoyed the crowd.”

The legendary linebacker also defended himself against the judges’ season-long focus on what they say is his flat footwork. “That’s what made me a Hall of Fame football player," he explained. "Without these feet, I wouldn’t be standing here!”

Warren’s daughter Mercedes’ birthday is tomorrow, and he’d be happy to celebrate both that and a ticket to the DWTS final. “Either we're ‘parting’ like hell or ‘partying’ like hell,” he laughed.

Cody Linley, whose partner Julianne Hough came back to dance with him after having appendix surgery two weeks ago, got the lowest combined score of the night, 46, and couldn’t hide his disappointment.

“I felt like I did my job,” Cody said. “We got a standing ovation after our paso doble. I was pretty upset with the judges. Usually, I agree 100 percent with their critiques but tonight, no, not at all. I’m bummed that I’m in last place after Julianne coming back and rocking those two dances. I felt confident and great about them and to receive bad scores was tough. I really hope tonight wasn’t my last dance with Julianne.”

If he doesn’t survive tomorrow’s elimination night, Cody at least knows he’ll have no problems getting dates!

The 18-year-old Hannah Montana cutie, who turns 19 on Thursday, confided that because of DWTS, women of all ages are recognizing him now. “Cougars are hitting on me and I say, bring them on!” he smiled.

Monday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See

D-i-s-r-e-s-p-e-c-t: Brooke Burke was brazenly scolded by Carrie Ann Inaba for violating the ballroom’s “no lifts” rule during her jive routine, telling Burke that the maneuver was “disrespectful.” Judges Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli backed up Inaba, calling Burke’s performance “a disaster” and “a mess.” Visibly shaken (though slightly bolstered by the crowd’s boos), Burke took the news and the scores – her lowest ever – in stride and rebounded with a saucy salsa in the second half of the show. Afterward, she told PEOPLE she was upset she had let so many people down. “Rightfully so, the first dance was a disaster and it was all my fault,” Burke said. “The lift that she was talking about that she called disrespectful was unintentional. I didn’t mean for my feet to come off the floor. We have a lot of respect for the rules the judges have at the ballroom and we did not mean for that to happen at all.”

R-e-s-p-e-c-t: Very little air conditioning flowed into the ballroom during a pre-taped segment with Aretha Franklin, which will air on Tuesday’s results show. (The Queen of Soul prefers balmy temps to keep her vocal chords warm and loose.) Franklin regaled the ballroom with “Chain of Fools” and her timeless woman anthem “Respect,” which reunited season six champs Mark Ballas and Kristi Yamaguchi on the ballroom floor for a cha-cha-esque routine for the first time since last May. Yamaguchi tells PEOPLE she’s secretly hoping Brooke Burke can hang on for next week’s finale. “We were talking a little bit when we were in the hair trailer,” Yamaguchi says. “I complimented her on how she’s handling everything and juggling four kids with this schedule. It’s tough and she’s really been great at managing and pacing herself through this.”

His Left Foot: Lance Bass was completely ship-shape with his and partner Lacey Schwimmer’s nautical-inspired jitterbug. Dedicated to his 82-year-old grandfather, Jim Bass, who sat proudly in the front row at the ballroom. “This is the first time he’s been to L.A. since shipping off to World War II,” Bass told PEOPLE after the show. As if the pressure of having his grandfather and father at the show wasn’t enough, Bass lost a sneaker within seconds of beginning the fast-paced routine. “With the adrenaline of a live show, you just kick a lot harder and it just flew right off,” Bass said, shrugging his shoulders. “What are you going to do?” No shoe? No problem. “I just fast forwarded in my head ‘what steps do I have to do that require me to land on my left foot?’ And I thought ‘there’s nothing that’s going to hurt me’ so I thought fine, I can do it.” He did it scoring big from the judges and got homemade chocolate chip cookies from Schwimmer’s mom, Laurie, to boot. Schwimmer toted a big plastic container full of the yummy treats, happily sharing with her fellow DWTS cast members (Warren Sapp was a happy camper), crew and even members of the press.

Misjudging Cody: Despite getting lambasted by the judges for his and partner Julianne Hough’s paso doble and salsa (and getting the night’s lowest score), Cody Linley says the evening was a triumph. “I was feeling the audience support, honestly. I felt really confident and awesome about our dances. We went out there and we rocked it,” Linley said. “I wasn’t feeling the judges and they weren’t feeling me. All I can say is I really want to dance one more time with Julianne and if people can vote, they should do it.” Linley, who turns 19 on Thursday, says the best birthday celebration would be to get to advance to the finals. “I’m ready to rock the finals. I can celebrate my birthday after I win that trophy. If I can get the support from those fans to dance one more week, I won’t let them down.”

Trash Talking: If there’s one thing Warren Sapp knows how to do, it’s get pumped up for the big moments. With his mother and kids Warren and Mercedes in the audience, Sapp turned on the charm and pulled out all the stops for his mambo and jitterbug routines, even shedding his top coat to reveal a red sequined vest and a pair of muscular arms. His scores earned him a tie for second place with Brooke Burke after the semifinal round. But that’s not deterring Sapp from focusing on next week’s finale. “I got my eye on the championship,” he said confidently. “Lance came to rock the floor tonight. He tore it up. I hope he peaked! I got one more week to get to the top of that leader board.”

Julianne Hough: "I'm Nervous Going Into Tonight"

Hey, everyone, sorry for the late post. I've been incredibly busy today - and every day. Ha, ha.

So about last night. I don’t know what the judges were watching or thinking. I don’t know what they had a problem with. I think they simply had it in for Cody and didn’t want him to make the finals. I thought he did a great job. I went and watched the dances again and he was awesome. I thought he should have had much better scores and better comments.

Not that he needs any defense, but it was hard to learn two dances this week, on top of the fact it was the first week we were back together. He has been really emotional. That was apparent last week when we talked to Dr. Drew. Cody's also really tired. It’s been 13 weeks since we started this whole thing. He’s exhausted.

I just don't think the judges got it last night. You can tell, I can't figure out what they were looking at. I feel like they haven't been nice to us this whole season. Cody has been trying so hard. But he doesn’t seem to be able to anything right for the judges. I feel bad for him.

As for tonight, I’m nervous going into the show. I think it might be our last night. Cody’s 18 and this is probably the biggest thing he’s done. I think the opportunities are just going to flow to him. I think this is going to be a big thing in his life and his career. He’s done an awesome job. I don’t think he could’ve done anything more. No matter what happens, I’m so proud of him.

Before I got, I want to get back to some of you who've written in.

Heather, thanks for asking about my dad. He’s doing great. He’s up and back to work. He still signing his emails Love your dad, the gimp. I’m doing Christmas in Washington, a big special that will be on TNT, and I invited him to come to Washington with me. He loves politics and all of that.

Kitty, you wanted to know if there’s anyone I haven’t met that I want to. I’m sure there is, but I feel like I met so many people last week at the CMAs. I had the best time interviewing all the stars and meeting everyone who inspired mewhile I was growing up. Like Reba. Actually, she came up to me and asked how I was feeling. She was concerned - and so sweet. I kind of couldn't believe she knew who I was. It flustered me a little. But it was fun.

And inside, Kenny Loggins was sitting behind me. He said excuse me, but I’m such a big fan of yours. I said, Are you kidding? You’re Kenny Loggins. I was blown away. It was fun. I’m like their biggest fans and they’re coming up to me. It’s weird.

Just being there was awesome, an awesome experience. It was so refreshing getting back there and being in that scene. It was good to get away from LA.

I had a blast.

Donna and everyone else who say they voted for me and Cody - multiple times: Thanks for your support!

Elizabeth, the routine with my brother wasn’t taped. It was live, and that night , in fact, was the first time I’d gone all-out since my operation. What’s funny is that Derek and I choreographed that routine in about 20 minutes. We did it the night before. I don’t know how we do it so quickly. When we work together, we don’t talk about what we’re going to do. We just start dancing. It kind of naturally falls into place. We don’t have to think. It was fun.

Jennifer: Yesterday was your 16th birthday? Happy birthday! I don’t think I even celebrated my 16th birthday. I don’t think I had time to celebrate my 16th birthday. I hope you had a great day.

Talk to you tomorrow.

apskip:
As expected (at least by me), Cody and Julianne got the boot tonight. Julianne did get the opportunity to sing one of her hit songs.
That leaves 3 good couples for next week. As I have previously indicated, my vote is going to be for Brooke over Lance and Warren, but I think it will be close.
