Derek Hough: 'Dancing' pro Julianne Hough won't be back next week

Julianne Hough is probably still at least another week away from returning to Dancing with the Stars -- at least according to her brother and fellow dance professional Derek Hough.

"[She's] probably not going to be back next week. Even if she wanted to -- and she does want to -- we're not gonna let her. We're gonna make sure she's in bed," Hough told Entertainment Tonight after Dancing with the Stars' Monday night performance show.

Hough said that one of the reasons for delaying her comeback was to allow her more time to rest before resuming the stresses that come with dancing on a regular basis. However, he added that her recovery has been moving along well and that she has progressed to the point where she is no longer bed-ridden.

"She's getting better. The first couple days after the surgery were a nightmare, she was in a lot of pain. But she's a fighter, [she's] up and about. I've seen her and she's getting a lot better," Hough told ET.

Hough's celebrity partner Cody Linley told ET that he had visited her and, while acknowledging that she wasn't quite her usual "chipper self" due to her recovery, said that she was healing well. He also added that Hough said that she would be voting for him and Edyta Sliwinska, who is filling in for her during her absence.

Linley and Sliwinska performed a waltz on Monday's Dancing with the Stars performance show. The judges weren't overly impressed with the dance and only gave the pair a score of 22, however they also noted that Linley and Sliwinska were still getting to know each other.

After performing his waltz, Linley admitted that he had been nervous about switching partners to Dancing with the Stars co-host Samantha Harris, but said he has also been enjoying dancing with Sliwinska.

"It was tough. I was really, really nervous going into it [to be honest] because I've been with Julianne forever, she knows me," Linley told Harris. "Edyta and I, our relationship is new and we gotta have that chemistry, but she's been amazing. I trust her 100% and I think it was a great waltz."

Linley also reiterated that Hough was "doing great" and "looked awesome." He also revealed that he had spoken to her right before going onstage for his performance.

"She wished me luck, and she was like 'I know that you'll do it awesome, Edyta's amazing,'" Linley said. "She said sorry she cant be here. she was like 'I wanna be there with you, but I know you're gonna rock it.'"

Backstage: How Did Cody Really Do with Edyta?

Cody Linley, the only celebrity in the history of Dancing with the Stars to have to dance with a substitute partner, says he won't know until Wednesday when he'll be able to dance with pro Julianne Hough again. "We just don't know if she'll be up to it this week," he says.

Hough had to temporarily bow out of the competition last Tuesday to have laparoscopic surgery to remove her appendix and cysts on her ovaries, both complications of endometriosis. Hough herself estimated that she would be off the dance floor for two weeks. "She's doing great, but she was in a lot of pain [after surgery]," reports Hough's brother, Derek.

Linley, the 18-year-old Hannah Montana star, put on a brave face as he danced with another gifted pro, Edyta Sliwinska, but behind the scenes, he says, he wasn't coping well. "It was literally the hardest week of my life," he says. "I've never been under such physical and emotional stress."

Sliwinska, the only professional to have danced on the show all seven seasons, understands how difficult it's been on the young star. The pair had to perform two dances, without the benefit of the shorthand that the other couples have developed. "It was a really tough week," says Sliwinska. "Because at this point in the competition, people know each other so well, they know how each other move. It makes it so hard to come in with somebody else."

And being a substitute teacher wasn't the only challenge, says Sliwinska. "I'm really beginning to believe that this season is cursed," she says, referring to the unusual number of injuries. "Because the minute we started to rehearse, I got a huge blister on my foot from new shoes. So I had to rehearse in my socks for the whole week."

Monday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See

She Likes Me!: Seven weeks into the competition, soap star Susan Lucci was called up to the judges podium by Carrie Ann Inaba and (awkwardly) instructed to address the crowd “I’m doing good!” Lucci may as well have added “and doggone it, Carrie Ann likes me.” After the show, Lucci said the standing ovation she received for her paso doble “was just spectacular.” It was a better feeling than the one Lucci had several days prior. Stricken with an intestinal virus, Lucci had to miss a rehearsal session. “I thought that I was holding up really well (with commuting from L.A. to NYC for All My Children). Friday after work at AMC I got this virus and I couldn’t leave home. I was quite dehydrated. But we tried to catch up and our paso doble was great. This was very nice.” “She’s a trooper,” Lucci’s partner Tony Dovolani says.

Welcome Back: With Julianne Hough absent from Monday night’s competition while she recuperated from surgery for endometriosis, Edyta Sliwinska (eliminated in week one with partner Jeffrey Ross) stepped in to partner up with Cody Linley. So what has Edyta been doing with her time since leaving the show? “I’ve been catching up and basically enjoying my time off,” she said, noting that re-joining the show mid-season made her feel a little rusty. “It is so much easier when the momentum builds up. I’m so out of breath.” The adjustment was also felt by Linley, who’s become very close with Hough. “This was the hardest week of my life. I’ve never been under so much stress – physical stress, mental stress, time constraints, trying to learn two dances with a new partner, but Edyta was an angel,” says Linley, who visited with Hough over the weekend.

This Little Piggy: Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer’s barefoot rumba received mixed reviews, but the pair say they felt amazing going shoeless. “This has been a really good week,” Bass told PEOPLE after the show. “Every Monday you do the recap and you’re either depressed or you’re really happy and we’re really happy. This was the most comfortable day in my life, to dance in pajamas and barefoot. I wish I could do that every day.” Bass and Schwimmer donned shoes for the group cha cha, in which the judges commended them for being the best couple in the group and thereby ‘saving’ the number. The highlight of the group dance was the men (Linley, Bass and pro Tony Dovolani) ripping open their shirts, which made the audience cheer with excitement. Who knew Bass had a nifty set of abs? “This is called not eating for a week,” Bass joked. “All season long I haven’t been able to hit the gym at all, but this week I really hit it hard because I knew we were going to have to show our bare chests. But it all came back pretty quickly,” he said.

Simply the Best: Their hot-to-foxtrot earned the season’s first perfect score and Brooke Burke and Derek Hough couldn’t have been happier. “There was something special about tonight,” Burke gushed after the show. “I loved this dance. It was fun, I loved the routine. Everything fell into place this week.” “I could tell when I was teaching her this dance that everything just kind of happened naturally,” Hough said. “We all have our dances and tonight was definitely one of her dances – I say one because she’s got many of them.” Hough, whose sister is a two-time champ and whose roommate, Mark Ballas, won last year, admits he’s in hot pursuit of the disco ball trophy this season. “I want it! Why not spread the wealth? On one hand seeing Julianne and how she’s off and Cody, you know, working so hard, you know they want to win. But on the other hand, I’m like Julianne you can’t win a third time!”

The B(usy) List: A bevy of Bass fans filled a corner of the ballroom, including actress Danielle Fishel and comedian Kathy Griffin. After the show Griffin told PEOPLE three reasons why she would NOT partake in DWTS: “Number one, I can’t even touch my toes. Number two, I don’t get along with others so I’d probably fire my partner. And number three, I am busy telling d— jokes and I cannot spend my time dancing. I have a lot of celebrities to offend and I need to stay focused.”

Post-Surgery Update on Julianne Hough

Less than a week after Dancing With the Stars pro dancer Julianne Hough announced she'd be taking her leave of the show to have surgery on her appendix, the beautiful blonde’s brother — and fellow DWTS hoofer — Derek Hough gave OK! an update on his sister's condition.

“She was in a lot of pain for a couple of days afterwards," Derek explained to OK! following Monday night's performance show, where he and celebrity partner Brooke Burke scored a perfect 30 for their dance. "But she’s a fighter; she’ll get through."

As for Julianne's optimistic statements that she'd be back on the show after only a couple of weeks off her feet, Derek is more cautious. "I don’t think she’ll be back to dance next week," he admitted, adding, "I’m going to make her stay in bed!”

And it looks like things are tough all over for the Hough family. Derek revealed to OK! that the siblings' father Bruce, who lives in Utah, broke his collar bone in half playing lacrosse.

"In humor, after he did it — with his bone is popping out of his shoulder — he said, ‘Yeah, I thought I was young and I forgot I’m 54 years old,’" Derek told OK!. "I love him. This happened a day before Julianne went into surgery. They actually went into surgery on the same day.”
