Senior editors Matt Webb Mitovich and Mickey O'Connor answer your questions.
On Dancing with the Stars, are the celebrities paid for participating? Are the pros? Do either get paid more the further they advance? - Barb
Mickey: Barb, how dare you taint the pleasure that is Dancing with the Stars by suggesting that it's a commercial enterprise! Obviously, the celebrities' only motivation is their sincere love of the dance… and publicity. Also: Yes, they are totally paid! A source close to the production tells me that both the pros and celebs receive a weekly stipend. (Aside: Celebs are paid several times what the pros get. Discuss.) The catch: Once you're eliminated, the paydays cease. Harsh, right?

PRESS RELEASE
OVERNIGHT ABC RATINGS (FOR 10/14)
Quick Take for Tuesday, October 14, 2008
"Dancing with the Stars Results" Takes Second at 9pm in Viewers and Women 18-49, While Leading its Time Period in Women 25-54 for the Third Consecutive Week
Sophomore Debut of ABC's "Eli Stone" Draws Largest Audience for a Regular Telecast Since February and Best Adults 18-49 Rating Since March
"Dancing with the Stars Results " (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Jumping from its lead-in by 9.1 million viewers and by 146% in Adults 18-49, ABC's "Dancing with the Stars Results" took second in the 9 o'clock hour in Total Viewers (14.4 million) and Women 18-49 (4.3/10). The show won its time period among Women 25-54 (5.7/12) for the 3rd consecutive telecast. "DWTS Results" outperformed its unscripted competition in the time period, NBC's second hour of "The Biggest Loser: Families," by 6.7 million viewers ("Loser" = 7.7 million). Additionally, the broad-appealing "DWTS" stood as Tuesday's highest-rated broadcast program with Kids 2-11 (1.6/7). Celebrity chef, author and reality television star Rocco DiSpirito was the fourth dancer to leave the competition this season.
"Eli Stone" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
The sophomore season premiere of "Eli Stone" drew the show's largest audience (8.8 million) for a regular telecast since February (since 2/07/08) and highest Adults 18-49 rating (2.2/6) since March (since 3/20/08).
* Compared to where it left off last season, "Eli Stone" was up by 2.7 million viewers and by 10% in Adults 18-49 over its season finale (6.1 million & 2.0/6 in Adults 18-49 on 4/17/08).
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 20% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
