Julianne Hough: A Night Off...Finally
I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry for getting this blog in so late. I've been rehearsing all day. I know some of you like the whole schedule, so here it is. I woke up and did my usual round of radio interviews. Then I went back to bed for a little bit. Later, I made some calls to find a vet so I could get Lexi checked out. After that I went straight to rehearsal. That was abotu 10:30 - and now it's about six pm. Our only break was a late lunch - burgers at In-N-Out. I said to Cody, "Man, we need some greasy food for a reward and some energy. It was delicious.
Today, we began work on the Jive, our dance next week. The first day is always the slowest because we’re working strictly on the choreography. Cody's a little slow in that department. I’m always like "Cody, get serious! Focus! Stop rolling on the floor!" Fortunately, he's doing better.
I’m so excited for tonight. I have the night off. I’m going to go home, take Lexi for a walk, then go on line and look for some fun furniture for the house I recently bought in Nashville – bedding and stuff like that – and then maybe watch a movie in bed. Absolutely nothing to do tonight. It sounds heavenly.
On last night’s show - as if you didn't know - we said goodbye to Kim. Nobody likes to see anyone go. It was hard to see Jeff and Ted McGinley go the first week, and it was equally hard, maybe even harder to say goodbye to Kim. By the second week, you get to know people better. I got to know Kim. She’s a real sweetheart. Everyone has their perceptions of people before they meet them, and I can tell you she’s such a good person. Obviously, though, people have to be voted off to keep the show going. That’s the name of the game. And Kim was one of the weaker ones. I hate saying that, but it's true.
I’m thinking of who over the seasons had had the hardest time being voted off, and you know what? Jeffery Ross, this season, was really sad about leaving. He was more serious than you'd imagine. He thought his eye messed him up and he could’ve done better. You’d think being a comedian, he’d laugh it off. But he really wanted to do well.
Who else? I remember when Layla Ali was on. She got third, but she said, I’m not going to hide it. I’m pissed off. I thought that was funny.
It was also funny last night when Cloris thought she’d been voted off. We had to tell her that she was still on. She seemed surprised.
Right after last night's show, we got our music and dance for the next week. They don’t give it to us until a couple is eliminated. So last night I came home, put the music on, and tried to feel it a bit. But I don’t like to do any choreography until I get to the studio. I’m more inspired when I have my partner there. Otherwise I’m doing all the moves myself.
By the time Cody arrived today, I had a lot of it visualized in my head. Then it's about seeing what he can do and adjusting throughout the week. Someone asked where I come up with my ideas. It's all about the music. You'll see on the next show.
Speaking of music, I appreciate all of your comments about my music -my album and single. I’m thrilled that so many of you have checked it out and enjoyed it.
Someone asked who I’m listening to and who inspired me when I was younger, and the list is long: Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Dolly, Allison Krause, Martina McBride, Reba…those are all the country girls. I also listened to Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac. U2 is one of my favorite bands ever. Bruce Springsteen. Bob Seeger. Especially because of my dad. We’d take family trips to Idaho every summer. It was a 12 hour drive and all of us kids would either be sleeping in the back or singing with my dad, who loved Springsteen, Seeger, U2…The very first CD I bought was Shania Twain’s “Come On Over.” I bought it with my own money. I think I was six or seven years old.
One more thing. Did any of you catch me last night sticking my tongue out at Cody? He sticks his tongue out a bit. I was goofing around - and maybe making fun of him a little.
I'll be looking out for your comments and questions.
See you next week.

An interesting article:
Tuesday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See
No Longer a Boy, Not Quite a Man: Julianne Hough praised her Hannah Montana partner Cody Linley for his “sexy, little rumba”, but she couldn’t help poking fun at the 18 year old and his tiny tuft of of chest hair. “Look at that little crop of hair in there!” Hough said, pointing at the open front of Linley’s shirt, “I could probably tweeze them out one by one, and it wouldn’t take as long as somebody getting waxed!”
Hough could probably pluck out Linley’s hair in no time–if she can actually hold him still. “It’s like that in rehearsals.” Julianne said of Linley’s now-famous disappearing acts, “I’m like, ‘Cody, where are you going?’ And it’s always something, he needs to blow his nose, he needs to get water, he needs to get food, he needs to stop at the gas station to get something else to drink.”
What Rivalry?: The show’s producers did their best to tout Corky Ballas joining the show as having all the makings of a heated father-son rivalry. And after two weeks of competition, the Corky and son Mark Ballas found themselves in the one situation that they dreaded the most: up against each other during elimination. Mark, the show’s reigning champion, was the first one to make his move. “He came up to me before the break, and he gave me a kiss and a hug, and he said, ‘I hope it’s me, Dad, and not you.’” Corky said.
In the end, it was a bittersweet victory for the elder Ballas, as he later described hearing his son’s name called as “horrible,” likening it to, “someone running a knife right through me.” “My dad’s been a hero to me all my life,” an admittedly dejected, but still proud Mark said, “and he’s always been a great role model, and he’s taught me everything that I know. I love him more than anything.” And as Mark and his celeb partner Kim Kardashian finished their final dance, the first set of open arms to greet Mark were his father’s. “I just wanted to hug him,” Corky later said, “and I said to him, ‘I love you, I’m proud of you and I’m sorry.’
The “Clori-ography” Dance Craze: Cloris Leachman’s moves on the dance floor have failed to excite the judges’ paddles, but as the couples were pared down to the final foursome, the 82-year-old broke the tension by showing Kardashian a few dance moves, even spinning the young brunette around in a pirouette that ended in a curtsy. When asked about the impromptu lesson, Leachman let out her trademark cackle and said, “She wanted to know a couple of moves, so I showed her a couple of my moves. There may be a dance studio in my future, you never know.”
Even pro partner Corky Ballas, who has managed the wild card Leachman through three nerve-wracking eliminations had to admit, that at this point, nothing would surprise him. “It’s called, “Clori-ography”! That’s what we do! She has her own way of doing things, and her own ideas of what she wants everyone to do, so why not?”
But it’s the mouth–and not the moves–Leachman that bear watching. “After seven seasons,” Samantha Harris admitted. “It is so great to have something fresh and unpredictable like that. Cloris is, hands down, the most unexpected, uncontrollable, and most exciting contestant we’ve ever had on the show.” But Harris, who often has a look of fear on her face whenever Leachman heads backstage, admits that she approached the casting of Leachman with more than a little trepidation. “I was a little concerned about what would happen with Cloris.” Harris said, “Prior to the show starting, I had interviewed her costars Meg Ryan and Annette Bening, and when I told them that the show was live, they both gasped, and said, ‘Oh my God! Good luck to you!’”
Dancing, Hazardous to Your Health?: After getting beaten up by the judges in back-to-back weeks, Rocco DiSpirito and partner Karina Smirnoff admitted to being the most surprised when they heard their names called as Smirnoff let out a squeal of delight that may be still ringing in host Tom Bergeron’s ears. “For I second, ” Smirnoff said after the show, “I didn’t believe that they called our names. They said, ‘Rocco, and Karina,’ and I was like, ‘Wait, Rocco, and Karina! That’s us!’
After being saved to dance another week, DiSpirito admitted that the show is already starting to take its toll, both mentally, and physically. “It’s crazy, the range of emotions that you feel.” he said, “This show makes you feel old when you’re rehearsing, because everything hurts. And then it makes you feel like a 15 year old on Tuesday, when you get through for another week.” Smirnoff couldn’t help being a little more melodramatic, adding, “I think that if they had kept us around until the end of the show, we would have developed a heart condition, and I would have gone into cardiac arrest.”
Next week’s game plan? If he doesn’t deliver a dance that doubles his score of 16, DiSpirito said, “I’m going to have to cook for the judges.”
More from Inside the Ballroom:
• Jessica Simpson’s pre-taped two-song performance had a surprise guest: little sis Ashlee Simpson Wentz snuck in just before Jessica started her first song. Wearing jeans and a black flowing shirt, the mom-to-be sat with three female friends and joined in on both of her sister’s well-earned standing ovations. She slipped out the side door as soon as taping finished.
• Tom Bergeron being lauded by the crowd warmer for his job hosting the Emmys. “Please!”, Bergeron said, laughing, “For God’s sake, don’t bring that up!”

Race driver Castroneves charged in US tax case
Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and TV "Dancing With the Stars" champion Helio Castroneves was indicted Thursday on tax evasion and tax fraud charges, accused of using offshore accounts to hide millions of dollars in income from the Internal Revenue Service.
Castroneves, 33, is charged with conspiracy and six counts of tax evasion for purportedly failing to report to the IRS about $5.5 million in income between 1999 and 2004, according to court documents. Each count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.
Also facing charges are Katiucia Castroneves, 35, the race car driver's sister and business manager, and attorney Alan R. Miller, 71, of Birmingham, Mich. All three are scheduled to make court appearances Friday and it wasn't immediately clear if they had hired defense lawyers. None were under arrest Thursday.
"This case sends a clear message that the IRS is committed to vigorously enforcing the tax laws and stopping offshore tax evasion," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.
Castroneves, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has won the Indianapolis 500 twice and is currently second in the IndyCar Series points standings. He and partner Julianne Hough won the 2007 "Dancing With the Stars" TV reality show competition on ABC.
The indictment charges that Castroneves illegally concealed income from Penske Racing Inc. and the Brazilian firm Coimex International S.A. Neither company is charged with any wrongdoing.
In Penske's case, prosecutors say Castroneves was to be paid $5 million in exchange for rights to use his name, likeness and image. The money was initially supposed to go to a Panamanian shell corporation, but then was diverted to a Dutch entity called Fintage Licensing.
Fintage was set up as a "deferred royalty plan" in which U.S. tax payments can be delayed, which is only legal if Castroneves had no relationship or control over it. Prosecutors say he did have control and that false statements were made to Penske about the relationship.
Coimex paid Castroneves $600,000 between 1999 through 2001 for sponsorship contracts, but he only paid taxes on about $50,000, prosecutors said.
Katuicia Castroneves transferred some of the hidden money to a Swiss bank account she controlled with her brother, court documents show.
Working telephone number for Castroneves and his sister could not be located Thursday. Miller did not immediately return a call to his office in Michigan.
Castroneves recently signed on with "Entertainment Tonight" to be a correspondent for some episodes of this year's "Dancing With the Stars" show. He did a similar stint last year.
He has raced for Team Penske since 2000, capturing Indy 500 victories in 2000 and 2001, becoming the youngest driver, 27, to win the famous race twice. Castroneves has recorded a total of 18 victories and 43 top-three finishes, according to Penske's Web site.
Miami-Dade County records show that Castroneves, who is single, lives in a six-bedroom, six-bath home in Coral Gables valued at about $2.3 million.
