How was the first week?
by Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Wed Sep 24, 2008 5:35 pm
So? Did everyone like it? I did I thought Misty did great given the fact that I didn't try to do anything 'extra' just yet. CA and Bruno need to realize this show is called Dancing With The Stars and not So You Think You Can Dance....... I know they come from the world of contemporary dance and their only Ballroom/Latin experience comes from judging our show, but Lance's Quickstep (and I like him a lot as a person) was really bad and didn't deserve an 8!
Have fun...... Enjoy..... Talk to you later

so Julianne Hough says
--- Quote ---The thing is, we're right in the middle. We aren't at the bottom and we aren't at the top, which gives us room to grow. My season with Apollo was the same thing; we were right in the middle. The judges don't want to see you to (sic) come out too strong and not have any room for improvement. They want to see improvement.
--- End quote ---
I agree with her that the judging behavior she cites is real. I find it sad that excellence takes second place in dance team behavior to gaming the system to beat the judging strategy.

An interesting article:
What to expect on tonight's 'Dancing with the Stars'
Tonight, the remaining celebrities on “Dancing With the Stars” will tackle the paso doble or the rumba, starting at 8 p.m. on ABC (WXYZ-TV, Channel 7). It’s only the second week of the show, but the great unanswered questions are piling up already. Here’s what to look for:
1. What will Cloris Leachman do next on live TV? At this point, we’re ready to declare the 82-year-old actress the winner, because she’s all anyone is talking about. Will she plop her cleavage in front of judge Len Goodman again? Will she have to be bleeped again when the scores are announced? Usually, we’re all for spontaneity on television, but Leachman is starting to make us nervous.
2. What song will Kim Kardashian use tonight? Kardashian and partner Mark Ballas danced to Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” last week, and America’s collective jaw dropped as she shook her famous booty to the immortal lyrics, “I like big butts and I cannot lie.” So where does she go from here as she tries to follow the judges’ orders and inject more personality into her performances? Hmm, maybe Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”? Spinal Tap’s “Big Bottom”? We’re just wondering.
3. Who’s the strongest female contender? Well, Brooke Burke has the hyper-extended legs that were praised by her partner, Derek Hough, last week, but she’s not as well-known as singer Toni Braxton, who’s turning out great performances in spite of her heart condition, or Misty May-Treanor, who’s coming off a high-profile Olympic gold medal win in beach volleyball. For now, at least, we’re giving a slight edge to Burke, but this is going to be a close race.
4. Who’s the best athlete-turned-dancer? As much as we like May-Treanor and Olympic gold-medal sprinter Maurice Greene, former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp has made the biggest impression so far. He’s like the big, burly relative at a wedding reception who surprises everyone by burning up the dance floor. Now if only we can figure out a way to get a Detroit Lion on the show and provide the team with some good news.
5. Will audiences ever warm to Lacey Schwimmer? She’s the new professional dancer who’s paired with former ‘N Sync star Lance Bass. In the floaty, graceful world of ballroom, Schwimmer comes across as edgy and a little scary. Will this hurt Bass’s chances? Will she get into a fistfight with Cheryl and Kym? Keep watching.
6. Will Cody Linley be less boring this week? The “Hannah Montana” teen dream has been surprisingly bland on and off the dance floor. When the chef, Rocco DiSpirito, has more star wattage, you know he’s in trouble.
7. Will Susan Lucci ever forgive judge Carrie Ann Inaba for calling her, in essence, too thin and frail? Would any cougar?
