I mean how seriously stupid were BJ & Tyler in this episode. First no pants and no shoes. WTF!!!! You have them with you put them on. I seriously wanted them to lose for that right there. Just hopelessly dumb behavior.
Then you are heading to the Pit Stop you are barely ahead of the fastest team on your season (if not one of the fastest teams on any season) and of course still no shoes, but when Jeremy stops to get directions (and Jeremy took time to put shoes and clothes on and Jeremy's an idiot), Tyler gets out and goes and asks Jeremy for directions (he doesn't get them, and doesn't ever ask the ambulance driver). They give up lead position (with no shoes) to follow the fastest team. Well thats not going to end well.

AR9 does not make it onto my list of the most thrilling seasons, but the Lake Bennett Wilderness Resort run to the pit stop does make it onto my list of most amazing moments ever in the history of the Amazing Race. The part you talk about precedes the important part where BJ attempted to take a shortcut and fell, narrowly edged out by Monica at the pit stop into last place of the 4 teams remaining. The time difference between Eric/Jeremy, Monica/Joseph and BJ/Tyler could not have been much more than one second. That was really thrilling.

I thought that Uchenna and Joyce were not eliminated in Jamaica was ridiculous. It was the final three. Jeremy and Tyler got saved in the Final Four. This situation was by far worse. Rob and Amber deserved to win so much more than Uchenna and Joyce. They really only won because they got good directions to a location and Rob and Amber got bad directions.

They also won because they got on the same plane as Rob & Amber. If Uchenna & Joyce hadn't gotten on the same plane, Rob & Amber's getting bad directions wouldn't have mattered -- they'd have been too far ahead of Uchenna & Joyce.
And besides, getting good directions or bad directions is part of the Race -- and part of life.

I forgot about the plane being held up for them. The plane was held up about 10 minutes before they even got to the gate. Its not like they got to the gate 10 minutes before it was scheduled to leave. They got to the gate 10 minutes after it was scheduled to leave. I don't know if CBS had something to do with it or if it was just pure luck, but they certainly are the luckiest team in the history of the show. They ran an OK race. Rob and Amber just deserved it more.

A lot of the earlier seasons of TAR had a non elimination leg before the finale leg. It was a pretty common occurrence. In fact up until season 9 only two seasons didn't feature a non elimination leg before the finale leg (seasons 5 and 6).
Nor was Uchenna & Joyce the first winners who were saved in the next to last leg by a non elimination. This happened in season 2 and 3, with Chris & Alex getting saved and winning, and Flo & Zach getting saved and winning.
And typically the strongest team doesn't win, by either specifically breaking apart the episodes to see time to complete or even the easier pit stop placement. Though its been more common in modern (season 12 and later) TAR.
As for Rob and Amber yes they performed better then Uchenna & Joyce, but they also were the first team to be what you could call a celebrity on the race. They received a lot of additional help on legs because people around the world had seen them from their three seasons of Survivor. There are legs they would have done, far, far worse without the additional help. At that time they were the first team to be recognized and assisted because of who they were. Its happened also on All Stars and in season 15, its something I truly don't like to see as it does give them (whomever the team is) a significant advantage that isn't based on genetics, social or learned skills.
