If the things you mention had gone the other way it would have been a totally different game and ending. Even bringing James back instead of Alex had a huge impact.

And that reminds me...Ryan really got screwed when he got his first HOH. He wanted to get rid of James, and he did. Then they change the rules and allow James to get voted back in...so you had to figure that Ryan would be history, since James immediately won HOH. HOWEVER, as I said above, James made his BIG mistake and didn't vote Ryan out...even though he was just axed by Ryan the week before. At that point, it was pretty clear that Ryan was living under some lucky star or something.

But technically Ryan was voted out before to. So why didn't they just do the couples split after Ryan/Allisons eviction, I guess you could say that Josh/Sharons HOH was a bust as well (even though they wanted Allison out), because it went singles and they still had to sit out of the HOH as a couple.
