Nat & Sheila talk to Adam like he is stupid...so I think he calls them on their hand by say "I am an idiot".
They think they have to explain everything to him.
I am pretty dog gone sure he is getting a little fed up with being treated like he's a challenged kid . They are so patronizing to him and I really think he has a few watts in the head up on both of them .
Just my take on it.
