Sharkshooter, yeah it's complicated.  I try to figure out what is the direction to the sun in the scene.  If I can do that accurately and if I know how the scene is oriented with respect to north, south, east, and west then I can convert the direction to the sun into angles of Solar Azimuth and Solar Altitude.  Then I compare one or both of those two angles to what would be expected for that particular day and that particular location on Earth.  So I need to know where the and when the shot was taken.

Solar Altitude can give a time of day (actually, two possible times of day) without having to know the scene's orientation.  For example, see Vyxsin's breast giving the time estimate for the Goth's arrival at the Detour in this leg (post #113).
