'Brother' bigger than ever

"This year, there will be something die-hard fans will love," Grodner hints. "It will give them the opportunity to participate even more than they have in the past."  :rolleyes

Big Brother Is Racier and More Interactive Than Ever!
by Angel Cohn

The Big Brother house gets an extreme makeover.
In just one week, the summer staple Big Brother is returning for its eighth season, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before. The house is getting an extreme makeover, featuring some "fractured fairy tale" elements reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. "We've got a bedroom where you feel very big and a bedroom where you feel very small!" says executive producer Allison Grodner. "There is a room that has five beds, but essentially you are living in a dollhouse because all of the beds are only 5 feet long and all the chairs are child-size and low to the ground. So our 6-foot-plus contestants — and we have quite a few of them — are going to be quite uncomfortable. Then in the room that is oversized, to get to the top drawer of the dresser, you have to climb up steps. It is fun and a fantasy thing that brings you back to your childhood, but imagine living there for 80 days." [Check out TVGuide.com's exclusive gallery for an early look at the house.]
In addition to the thrice-weekly airings on CBS, fans can also track the houseguests via live feeds on the Internet or late-night feeds on Showtime Too. The Big Brother: After Dark airings on the cable net (midnight to 3 am nightly) will give TV watchers a look at some of the most talked-about moments of the summer. "It is another uncensored look," Grodner promises. "You don't have to have your computer, you don't have to subscribe [to the live feeds] to see what's going on in the house after dark. When the sun goes down and the competitions are over, you never know what happens in the Big Brother house. This is when we had the infamous catfight between Beau and Janelle; the Eric fight two seasons back; in Season 2 they played the hot-tub games in the nude.... You never know."

Sounds a lot like some of the content that airs during the prime-time versions on the racy counterparts across the pond! "These are things that sometimes you will see on [CBS], but most of the time it is stuff we really can't show," she continues. "At least here we have an outlet [on] Showtime. And since that's what people are expecting, no one will be offended."

While the late-night antics may be fun, there will still be lots of reasons to watch the prime-time installments, including the new interactive components. "This year, there will not be an America's Choice because America will be able to participate in the game like they never have before," Grodner teases. "It will be revealed at the end of the first episode, and you can hop on [the Internet] and get involved. I promise you, you've never heard of an interactive opportunity like this on a television show, because we're the only show — in the way that we are structured, being almost live — that can pull this off."
But what about those persistent rumors that some Big Brother alums may be joining the cast this year? "I thought that was [an] interesting [rumor]," Grodner says. "We did All-Stars last year, and that was the best of the best and we still love them. They did a great job. But we're starting with a clean slate. We're trying to create a group of new All-Stars for the future. At this point — at least in the cast — it is a group of new faces." Hmm... very interesting.

One thing Grodner can definitely confirm is that the dreaded food punishment from last season is rearing its oatmeal-like head again this season. "After the success of slop last year, we've decided we're doing it again. PB&J was like lobster compared to slop. They were living life easy
."

All told, the game itself will stick to its familiar elements — Head of Household picks two players to be eliminated, they can win a power of veto — at least at the start. "It really isn't a structure that we like to mess with," she confirms. "We can certainly amp things up and the competition is always changing, there are new twists and turns, and come mid-season, there may be another curveball.... But all of that just adds to the soap opera and the competitive game elements."

*some of the people going into the house this summer are going to find themselves living with someone that they know and its someone that they have a bad history with.
* it could be a former love interest

reminder ...Julie Chen will be on ET tonight

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Julie Chen takes ET on a tour of the new "Big Brother" house for the reality series' eighth season.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nowhere is it more clear that a house is not a home than in the house that CBS built for the eighth season premiere of "Big Brother," premiering Thursday, July 5 at 8 p.m.

"We have this fantasy 'Alice in Wonderland' feel," explains series host JULIE CHEN, who takes ET down the rabbit hole to point out the special features.

First up are the three bedrooms: One is very tiny, one is very large, and one is just right. It may sound more like the "Three Bears," but it is really a takeoff on the portion of the movie where Alice grows 10-feet tall and then shrinks to a very small size.

"I am maybe five feet, five inches on a good day, and I had to stoop to get in," says Julie, pointing out the tiny doorway. "This bedroom is made to make you feel larger than life. I can touch both ends [of the bed] with both of my hands. Look at the little stool, look at the little furniture. You know how they say the camera adds 10 pounds? This room adds 50."

The small-sized bedroom isn't the only one that will cause the house guests some discomfort. The too-large bedroom requires a step-stool to get in bed -- and to put clothes into the chest of drawers, making its inhabitants feel very small. There is also one bedroom that is just right, but still a little unique, with a king-sized round bed.

"This is what we call the romance room, in case anyone wants to get romantic this season on 'Big Brother,'" Julie adds.

There is also a gym where the house guests can work out to stay healthy -- and to burn off steam. And speaking of steam, the bathroom once again features a double shower, but affords a bit of privacy with a shower curtain and frosted glass. But even on the "throne," "Big Brother" contestants will be observed.

"Up in that corner, that little hole -- that is a camera," Julie shows ET. "The reason we have that is we don't want to have anywhere in the house where people can have secret conversations."

The eighth season of "Big Brother" will be adding a new element to the game, which will not only involve the people who are living in the house, but the viewers as well. The viewers are going to be able to get involved like they never have before.

"I can tell you that everything is not what it appears to be initially," Julie says.

IDENTITIES OF THE THREE SECRET PAIRS OF RIVALS COMPETING IN "BIG BROTHER 8" REVEALED LAST NIGHT
  Identity of America's Player Revealed

  Kail Harbick Becomes First Head-of-Household

The secret is out on the identities of the three pairs of rivals competing in BIG BROTHER 8.  Host Julie Chen announced the secret enemy pairs last night to viewers during the premiere episode.

As part of the twist that will play out during the summer broadcasts, last night six of the 14 Houseguests learned that they will be sharing the house with an enemy, a rival or someone with whom they have unfinished business - in short, someone from their past who they had hoped never to see again or someone with whom there is an extreme amount of tension.

In last night's premiere episode, the enemy dynamic seemed to create an early alliance of 11 versus three, with the three being the group of enemies who entered the BIG BROTHER 8 house earlier in the evening before the 11 entered.

In addition to viewers learning the enemy pairs, the premiere episode revealed the identity of "America's Player," Eric Stein.  Beginning Sunday, July 8 (8:00-9:00 ET/PT), at the conclusion of every episode, viewers will be asked to vote on an important assignment that Eric Stein, a 27-year-old from New York, must complete.  It could be a strategic move or a personal action.  Stein must attempt to do what viewers request, including voting out a specific Houseguest.  And, he can never tell anyone in the house that he is working on behalf of the viewers.  But, Stein needs to be careful ... just like his fellow Houseguests, he can be voted out at any time.  If Stein successfully accomplishes these assignments as "America's Player," he will be financially rewarded.   Viewers will be able to vote on CBS.com or via text messaging on a mobile phone and will choose from multiple choice answers on each question.  The prevailing vote must be completed by Stein in order for him to be rewarded.

Each Thursday, the Houseguests compete to become Head of Household.  The perks of the position include a luxurious private bedroom and bathroom, along with a plasma screen spy cam to monitor other Houseguests' activities. However, it also includes the responsibility of having to nominate two fellow Housemates for eviction.  On the weeks when there are veto challenges, one of the nominees can be saved from the chopping block if they, or another Housemate, wins the Power of Veto competition and chooses to save one of the nominees, while giving themselves immunity from nomination.  If they choose to use the veto power, the Head of Household must immediately choose another nominee.

Last night, the Houseguests competed in a competition called "Mushroom Madness" to see who would become this season's first Head of Household.  Kail Harbick, the 37-year-old Business Owner, from McKenzie Bridge, Ore., won the coveted position.

BIG BROTHER 8 is broadcast each week on Sundays (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT), Tuesdays (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) and the live eviction show, hosted by Julie Chen, on Thursdays (8:00-9:00 PM live ET/delayed PT).
