I don't think its an inside joke.  I think its that Tyler swim better thenn James.

And its getting clear that James feels he isn't pulling his own weight.

Even his comment in this week's episode when he finished first, was finally something I am good at in this damn race.

I think even though they don't get riled up easily and are both very laid back that James is really disappointed with his performance overall, not just directions.

So of course in the preview for next week it is of course James who is stuck in the mud.
