The Amazing Race 10: A Look At The Teams
Click PLAY to meet the teams
The Amazing Race 10 Premieres Sept. 17 at 8:30 p.m.
(CBS4 News) MIAMI The four time Emmy award winning reality series, The Amazing Race, is kicking off a brand new season on a brand new night. The Amazing Race is once again pulling out all the stops as 12 teams of two people race around the world for a chance to win one million dollars.

Here’s a look at the teams:

Bilal and Sa’eed
Best Friends from Cleveland Ohio
These best friends have spent years bonding over their love of food, Browns football and their shared Islamic faith. While Bilal is energetic and outgoing, Sa'eed is quiet and passive. Their vastly different temperaments will be fun to watch as they attempt to navigate over 40,000 miles in under 30 days.

David and Mary
Married Parents from Stone, Kentucky
David & Mary are married parents who met while working at McDonald's 10 years ago. Although David did some traveling while he was in the Army, Mary can count on one hand the number of times she's been on a plane. This hard working couple is eager to expand their horizons and see the world together.

Duke and Lauren
Father and Daughter from Rhode Island
When Lauren told her family that she was gay, her father Duke didn't react well to the news and the two were estranged for several years. Now they are working on rebuilding their relationship and hope that the Race will help them recapture the closeness they once shared.

Dustin and Kandice
Best Friends
Dustin & Kandice met while rooming together at the Miss America pageant.
Rivals at first, they quickly became friends and have been inseparable ever since. Kandice is wild and impulsive, while Dustin is religious and more conservative. Their shared trait is that they are both intense competitors who thrive on winning. Dustin is the reigning Miss California from Riverside and Kandice is the reigning Miss New York from New York.

Erwin and Godwin
Brothers from San Francisco
These overachieving, super competitive brothers say they are ready for the adventure of a lifetime. Godwin has grown up in the shadow of his Harvard-educated brother and is eager to show Erwin and the rest of his family that he has what it takes to win THE AMAZING RACE. This Team's love for traveling the world and competing is infectious.

Kellie and Jamie
Best Friends from Columbia, SC
Don't let their Southern drawls fool you. These former co-captains of the University of South Carolina cheerleading squad are highly competitive and just might have what it takes to be the first female Team to win THE AMAZING RACE.

Lyn and Karlyn
Best Friends from Alabama
Lyn & Karlyn are two mothers from Alabama who have known each other since the ninth grade. Although they have limited traveling experience, the best friends are hoping that their resourcefulness and wit will make them the Team to beat.

Peter and Sarah
Friends from California
Peter and Sarah are both Iron Man competitors who have a long history of teamwork. Sarah recently became the first female with an artificial leg to complete the Hawaii Iron Man Triathlon. Peter works as a clinical prosthetist and travels the country speaking to amputees and consulting for prosthetic legs. Both are out to win and eager to show the world that a disability will not stop them from reaching their goals.

Rob and Kimberly
Dating Couple from Los Angeles, Ca.
Rob & Kimberly met while bartending and have been dating for the last two years. Their relationship has experienced some rocky moments, yet they recently decided to take a leap and move in together. They are both looking to the Race to test the strength of their relationship and prove to them that they are meant to be together.

Tom and Terry
Dating Couple from New York, NY
This feisty, fun-loving couple has been together for over two years. Their playful nitpicking is constant, but it always ends in shared laughter. Tom & Terry are hoping the Race will prove to them they have what it takes to stay together.

Tyler and James
Best Friends from Los Angeles, Ca.
Tyler & James are not your typical "pretty boys"; they've both had their share of hard knocks. After losing track of each other several years ago, they reconnected after going through rehab and have been best friends ever since. They're hoping their newfound lease on life will help carry them around the globe and across the finish line.

Vipul and Arti
Married Couple from Windermere, Fl.
Vipul & Arti are the first Indian-American Team to run the Race. Both speak several languages and are well-traveled. Vipul admits to being a bit overzealous, while Arti takes great pride in her ability to reign in his emotions and focus him in on his strengths--a skill she will undoubtedly be forced to call upon while racing around the world.

The Amazing Race 10 debuts Sunday September 17th at 8:30 p.m on CBS4

Two reality shows take two ethnicity paths

By R.D. Heldenfels
Two reality shows on CBS will try to make points about diversity. One has done it more noisily.

Survivor: Cook Islands arrives at 8 p.m. Thursday with a deliberately provocative notion: four tribes of five people each, divided along strict ethnic lines, in competition with each other.

For any competition, that would invite controversy. Survivor's past lack of diversity makes it seem even more cynical.

The Amazing Race, meanwhile, which has embraced diversity in different forms in its runs, begins its new season on Sept. 17 at 8:30 p.m. with one of its most diverse casts, executive producer Bertram van Munster said at a news conference this summer.

One of the most visible differences is the inclusion of two Cleveland friends, Bilal Abdul-Mani and Sa'eed Rudolph, whose Islamic faith extends to their wardrobe.

They will compete against 11 other pairs, including a father-daughter team in which the daughter is gay; a couple ofIndian-American descent; a gay male couple; and a team with a clinical prosthetist and a woman who has an artificial leg -- recent ESPY award winner Sarah Reinertsen. Also, cheerleaders and models.

The casting of an Islamic team even as America is marking the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11 can be seen as a healing move. Van Munster has said they ``give a phenomenal image of who they are.'' It can also feel exploitative, although van Munster said the anniversary was not a factor in their selection.

Given Race's record on race, van Munster is believable. Survivor's plan is harder to digest, especially when shows like Amazing Race and Fox's American Idol have been more openly diverse than Survivor.

Jeff Probst, the host of Survivor, said the decision to deal more directly with race came out of regular preseason discussions. Looking for a new direction, the show's staff decided it needed to address the lack of diversity -- and possible stereotyping -- on the program.

Probst said that about 85 percent of the people applying to Survivor are white. If only for that reason, Probst said, the rare people of color on the show are like beacons when they do not do well.

At the same time, he said, there are plenty of ridiculous white people on the show, but ``you can find one or two (whites) to root for.''

In order to improve its diversity, the show expanded its casting search this time, seeking out people of color. (Somehow, one third of the 20 contestants still ended up being from Los Angeles, but that's another diversity issue.)

And as would-be contestants were interviewed, Probst said, ``we kept coming up with the same idea, ethnic pride.'' That led to dividing tribes along ethnic lines, which Probst had expected to be seen as a positive move.

But when it was announced, the show came under fire from critics and politicians. A number of sponsor pull-outs were announced, although Probst said the show lost some key sponsors months ago, before the theme was known.

Still, in a telephone news conference Thursday, Probst insisted that the resulting show will be thought of as one of the five best Survivor series ever, and that the change in cast and concept invigorated him and the show.

There are three different love connections, for example, a record number of blind-sides in Tribal Council -- and, in the second episode, a discussion within one tribe about stereotyping.

``The show, in our minds, rebirthed itself,'' he said, noting that many of the players had never seen Survivor -- unlike the thoroughly schooled competitors in some recent seasons. ``It really did energize us.''

And, he said, ``At the end of the day, you will see that we handled it responsibly.''

But we'll have to wait until the show airs to know for sure. Breaking with recent tradition, CBS is not making the first installment of Survivor: Cook Islands available for preview.

Still, Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan said, ``You can't have diversity just for the sake of diversity.... (Teams) ultimately have to be interesting.''

But how people are seen makes a difference in a competition.

``Everybody's going to face extra challenges based on how they look, what color skin they have, how they behave, whether they're unshaven,'' Keoghan said. ``The real world isn't fair.''

'Amazing' show of support: Three gays grace latest 'Race'

The new edition of the "Amazing Race" (premiering Sept. 17) will feature both Tom & Terry and Duke & Lauren...

...with the former team consisting of a gay couple of more than two years, and the latter a lesbian and her not-always-so-accepting father.

All racing to win...the chance to become the next Reichen.

It remains to be seen if the "Amazing" gay trio will be able to change some hearts and minds on their televised journey; though we're hoping that those who think sexuality is just a "Detour" on life's race, where one can choose whichever path they find the most desirable, will learn that these three's orientations are as predetermined as the non-elimination rounds.

Amazing Race visiting Bulls
05 September 2006

The Rangitikei Mail received an excited message from Bulls promotion coordinator Bronwyn Meads on Friday:

"I have been contacted by a story producer from Great Southern Television," Ms Meads said.

On Thursday September 14 the host of The Amazing Race Phil Cogan and a team of competitors will be hitting Bulls between 12.30-1.30, where there will be 10 minutes of television time filmed in town. These competitors will each get cash and they will be racing around the town trying to get as many Kiwiana items as they can in 10 minutes.

"So they may be visiting your business," Ms Meads warns Bulls business people.

What better publicity for Bulls than to be featured on a popular international prime time television show.

"They have stated if you don't want to be on TV then get someone else to take your place that day, as they only have this short time, and may be visiting your store."

The competitors are given some inspirational challenges along the way and want to engage in the community of Bulls. Ms Meads is sending the producer a list of relevant stores in the town.

"Let's make their visit a memorabull one," she says.

TOP 5 ?MUST-SEE? RETURNING SHOWS FOR 2006-2007
1. THE AMAZING RACE (CBS)
Premieres Sunday, September 17th at 8:30PM/7:30c
After highly criticized 8th and 9th seasons for the now four-time Emmy Award winning series, all eyes will be on this show?s milestone 10th season. The Amazing Race moves to a new night, where CBS hopes the show will finally gain some exposure. The new season includes a promised twist to the race course and a very diverse cast (which, unlike Survivor, was not touted by the producers).Needless to say, Race fans have a lot of high expectations for the 10th season. But not once in its last nine has The Amazing Race failed to deliver the drama, comedy, adventure, and thrill it has promised since its very first episode in 2001

IGN Interview: The Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan
 good read  !! ( thanks mwooden  !)

IGN TV: So how do you think Amazing Race 10 stacks up to the others?

Phil Keoghan: Great. It's different from any one. I think what's really cool is we went west, and we had more teams in an exotic location than we ever had before. Normally we build up to that, and then the best teams are left and we get to the really hard stuff. We put all of the teams into the hard stuff right from the get go, so it shocked a lot of them. A real major culture shock.
IGN TV: That being the case, did more teams really freak out right away?

Keoghan: Yeah, absolutely. They were freaking out and couldn't believe how intense it was. I mean it was baptism by fire and a lot of fish out of water.

Review: The Amazing Race 10--09/17/2006

Written By Rick Ellis, Saturday, September 16th, 2006

Since it's inception, "The Amazing Race" has remained one of my favorite reality shows.

Unlike "Survivor," the series is less about alliances than it is about street smarts and an ability to think on your feet. Every season, the teams are sent across the world and it never fails to amaze me how that challenge reveals the true character of a person.

To win "Amazing Race" requires a balance of brains and charm. You have to think strategically, yet so much of the results are left to the hands of fate. Unlike many reality shows, you can't skate by under the radar. Each challenge requires a strength and focus that weeds out the undeserving.

Another continuing strength of the show has been its casting, and the tenth season of the series is no exception. While the contestants do include the sadly typical mix of models, cheerleaders and future trophy wives, the cast also includes a Kentucky coal miner and his wife, a pair of friends from Alabama, two Muslims, a motivational speaker with a prosthetic leg and a father-daughter duo that already illustrate a weirdly dysfunctional relationship.

The 90-minute premiere episode kicks off in Seattle before heading quickly to China.

As you might imagine, the Chinese culture provides a fascinating backdrop for the challenges, although some of the contestants would probably be entertaining if they were careening through Des Moines.

Teammates Lyn and Karlyn are fascinated by the thought of being in China, with one of them remarking that "people in China love us folks from Alabama because of that movie 'Forrest Gump.'"

The coal miner's wife throws out what could be a classic "A.R" moment when she attempts to get a Chinese cab driver to speed up by yelling "Drive faster...quack, quack!"

As for strategy, Sarah--the young woman who an artificial leg--quickly realizes that she can use her handicap to get special access onto planes and other modes of transportation.

The episode flies by, and longtime viewers should be warned that there are some surprises this season. One of which pops up very unexpectedly at about the halfway point of the first leg, when host Phil Keoghan makes an unexpected appearance.

The producers take full advantage of the Chinese landscape, ending the first leg of the race with a brutal rope climb up the side of the Great Wall of China. It's a segment that is both harrowing to watch and also fascinating to see strictly on its visual terms. It's an almost perfect "Amazing Race" challenge, and it sets a high bar for the rest of the season.

I realize that "The Amazing Race" has changed nights this season, and there certainly are a lot of fine shows that also premiere this week. But if you can only watch one reality series this fall, watch "The Amazing Race."

It is....well.....amazing.

1: Never-Seen-Before Diversity of Teams

This season’s contestants are the most diverse bunch in the history of The Amazing Race.

2: A One-Legged Race, literally...

Watch whether Peter and Sarah, both Iron Man competitors who have a long history of teamwork, have what it takes to beat the rest of the teams despite amputee Sarah’s artificial leg.

3: Family Feuds and Sibling Showdowns

Season 10 promises more emotional frenzy than ever before. The Amazing 10, Episode 1 Preview
by Jenn Brasler -- 09/17/2006

Before the first episode airs, Jenn has a preview of the goings on, as well as her first impressions of the teams. Which pairs are exactly as she suspected they would be? Which are different than she thought? And how will this race be different than any other? Warning: This article contains minor spoiler information!

This season has already been touted as the most diverse race yet. We have an Indian-American team, an Asian-American team, a Muslim team, and an out lesbian. That’s a lot of firsts for one season.

But not everything will be different this time around. The basic format of the race is the same - teams of two who work together on various tasks around the world in an attempt to avoid elimination and ultimately win a million dollars. There is still the normal mix of teams: the dating couples, the married couples, the siblings, the friends. There are still strong teams and weak teams, smart teams and not-so-smart teams, teams who are underestimated and teams who are overestimated. And this point there’s no way to know who will win the million dollars, but first impressions of the teams can be indicative of what to expect later in the race. So here are mine, in no particular order:

Duke & Lauren: This father and daughter haven’t spent much time together lately, since Duke didn’t respond well when Lauren announced that she’s gay. But apparently they’ve smoothed things over enough to communicate well and enjoy the race together. Duke is the oldest contestant this season, but he’s going to be a major force to contend with.

David & Mary: Mary & David are mostly sweet, but watch out when things get tough: Mary will come out swinging. She looks like a sweet little housewife, but she has a lot of fight in her. They’re pretty consistent racers.

Karlyn & Lyn:
Lyn & Karlyn are the only racers who get on my nerves a little towards the beginning. They already have a team they don’t like, which may make them the Charla & Mirna or Alex & Lynn of the season. As for their racing, they may not do well on physical tasks, but the rest of the components of the race seem to be a piece of cake for them.

Erwin & Godwin: These brothers are strong and smart, but that’s not all the race is about - there’s also an element of luck. Unfortunately, they don’t have a whole lot of it. But fortunately, they’re in pretty good spirits anyway.

Kandice & Dustin: It’s incredibly difficult to tell these blonds apart, especially since they like to dress alike. Let’s hope they stop that. Dustin & Kandice look like dumb blonds, but there’s more to them than that. They know what they need to do to stay ahead and they try their hardest.

Vipul & Arti: These two are a really sweet couple (think Jon & Kris from season 6) and I like them pretty much immediately. They have nothing but nice things to say about each other, which I always like to hear. Unfortunately, they’re another team with a run of bad luck.

James & Tyler: James & Tyler first appear to be just another pair of models, but they’re actually much more than that - they met in recovery while battling drug addictions. They’re good racers and really know what they’re doing. If you’re worried that they’ll be like last season’s Eric & Jeremy, don’t be.

Kellie & Jamie: Between Jamie & Kellie, there may not be a lot of brains. But they do have a good sense of humor to make up for it. They’re both very friendly and take to meeting the other racers quickly. Like Kandice & Dustin, they work hard and stay focused on the task at hand.

Tom & Terry: Terry & Tom aren’t highlighted a great deal in the first episode, so it’s hard to see a lot of their personality. They seem like amiable guys, but they make it clear that they’re here for the competition, not the relationships they might form with other people. Whether that will hurt or harm them remains to be seen.

Sa’eed & Bilal: Bilal & Sa’eeed are nice guys and all of the other teams have nothing but good things to say about them. They’re devout Muslims, which means that no matter where they are, when it’s time to pray, it’s time to pray. This might not be a good thing in a race where minutes can matter. But it’s definitely nice to see a team who has that kind of depth.

Sarah & Peter:
Peter & Sarah were originally touted as friends, but they’ve actually been dating for a little while, too. They obviously respect and trust each other, having trained for the Ironman together, which means that they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Peter comes across as a little intense, so let’s hope he doesn’t turn out to be as intense as Colin. Sarah’s prosthetic leg becomes a point of contention with some other racers who think she might be using it to her advantage. But Sarah is athletic enough to take care of herself when the time comes.

Kimberly & Rob: Rob says that Kimberly is controlling and he can’t be controlled. However, to me, it looks like Rob is really the person in control (or at least he thinks he is). I’m just counting the minutes until this team self-destructs. It remains to be seen how athletic they are and how far they’ll be able to get.

Phil warns the teams early on that there will be some surprises on the race, and he’s not kidding. The first surprise shows up on the first leg, and no one sees it coming (though one racer guesses it without even realizing it). I can’t tell you what the surprise is, of course, but it’ll keep the racers on their toes for the reason of the adventure.

As for the tasks, they aren’t much different from what teams have done in the past. There is a Roadblock on the first leg, which is rare, and it involves, food, unfortunately. The Detour offers a choice between a task that is physical but not necessarily time-consuming and a task that is less physical but possibly more time-consuming. Both require accuracy and attention to detail.

One rarity, however, is that teams must complete a very physical task in order to reach the Pit Stop. This means that teams who get to the location of the Pit Stop first won’t necessarily get to the mat first. Instead of a footrace to the mat, which is what we usually see, we see a different kind of struggle. It’s a good determination of who is physically fit and who will have more trouble with those kinds of activities.

The tenth season of The Amazing Race premieres Sunday, September 16th at 8:30 EST with an hour-and-a-half-long episode. There will be plenty of action and tension, as well as a lot of likeable teams and some unexpected twists. Don’t miss it!

Arti & Vipul were, sadly, one of the first teams eliminated from the race. Many people were upset to see them go since they were so likeable. Read on for their take on their main competition, what took them so long, and what fish eyes taste like.

The Amazing Race 10: 12 Teams Shot Out Of A Cannon

Amazing Race / Amazing Race
Date: Sep 21, 2006 - 01:15 PM
Things look promising for The Race on Sunday nights. One might have expected this quirky weekend television outpost timeslot to bleed The Amazing Race 10 of much of its rating starpower — wobbly though it is — but, behold, the 90-minute premier received a slightly higher audience (approx. 10.11 million viewers) than the premier of the fabled and routinely ostracized The Amazing Race: Family Edition did nearly one year ago. This is promising.
