EP6: WHAT WE KNOW AND WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW
« on: April 05, 2006, 11:44:41 AM »
The time has come, The Walrus said,
 to talk of many things,
of planes and clues and NEL's
of cabbages and kings.

This is Segesta, Italy, founded by the Greeks in the 5th Century BC. The town was constantly at war, yet the majestic Doric temple has miraculously survived sacking and the ravages of time, and stands in splendid and solemn isolation on the hill facing Monte Barbaro.

This temple is the fourth pitstop in a race around the world.  Teams arrived here at the end of the last leg of the race for a mandatory rest period.  This was a time to rest, eat, sleep and get to know their fellow racers.  Sad to say, Eric and Jeremy no longer had their dolls to play with (the Double Dees who were eliminated through the dastardly deeds of The Evil Ones, Lake and Michelle)   The seven teams waiting here have no idea what's in store for them.

BJ and Tyler who were the first to arrive at the temple at 2:30PM will depart at 2:30AM. They receive route info which tells them to drive 42 miles to the city of Palermo (or Trapani) and then proceed to the city of CATANIA on the East Coast of Sicily.  When they arrive they must choose one of the marked cars and drive themselves to the PIAZZA STESICORO where teams will find their next clue.

Pop Quiz No. 1

After arriving in Palermo (or Trapani) teams must:

a.  Drive to the City of Catania a distance of 285 kilometers?

b.  Board a SAIS bus and ride to Catania?

c.  Board a train and ride to Catania?

d.  Find the airport and sign up for a charter flight to Catania leaving at 6:30AM, 7:00AM, or 7:30AM

e.  None of the above.

The teams leave the temple pit stop in the following order:

1.  BJ and Tyler leave at 2:30AM
2.  Eric and Jeremy leave at 3:00AM
3.  Monica and Joseph leave at 4:15AM
4.  Fran and Barry leave at 4:55AM
5.  Lake and Michelle leave at 6:00AM
6.  Dave and Lori leave at 6:15AM
7.  Ray and Yolanda leave at 6:30AM

If they do fly on a charter flight this is the routing:

Charter No. 1 leaving at 6:30AM:  The Hippies, The Beach Boys, and MO/JO
Charter No. 2 leaving at 7:00AM:  The Old Timers, The Evil Ones
Charter No. 3 leaving at 7:30AM:  The Nerds, Rayolanda

Arriving in Catania, the find their cars and the clue which tells them to drive to PIAZZA STESICORO. Here they descend into the ruins of a Roman Amphiteatre and retreave their next clue.  It is now early morning and we see the Beach Boys wearing light windbreakers and with the sun just beginning to shine on the surrounding buildings while the amphitheatre is still in shadow.

Finding the clue, a route marker, they are told to proceed (perhaps on foot since we no longer see any of the teams wearing backpacks which are probably in their car parked somewhere) down VIA ETNEA one half mile to the PIAZZA ALONSO DI BENEDETTO and locate the FONTANA DELL'AMENANO where they will find their next clue.

Arriving at the fountain they locate the clue box and the next clue which is a DETOUR.  A detour consists of two tasks each with its own pros and cons.  In this detour teams must choose between CASH and CARRY.  In CASH, teams must locate a particular fish monger in the picturesque MERCATO DELLA PESCHERIA  (Fish Market) which stretches from the Piazza up VIA GARIBALDI.  They will weigh out four kilos (8.8 pounds) of small Italian fish and sell them in the market for x?x Euros (it has to be a set price or they could just unload the whole batch for a single Euro). When they have completed their sale, the fish monger will give them their next clue.

In CARRY, teams must locate a different fish monger who sells swordfish.  Each team member must select one 32-pound swordfish and carry it one-third of a mile to a particular restaurant (perhaps in the Una Hotel Palace on Via Etnea or the Trattoria San Giuliano on Via Antonio San Giuliano).  When they arrive the restaurant manager will give them their next clue.

We have established that the following teams selected whch task:

CASH:  The Old Timers

CARRY:  The Hippies, The Beach Boys, MO/JO, The Evil Ones, and Rayolanda.

The Big Question:What has happened to the Nerds?  We only see them with clue envelope and instructions in hand at the corner of Via Etnea and Via Antonio San Giuliano by the Palazzo San Demetrio.  As Winston Churchill might say "The Nerds are a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside of an enigma.

Pop Quiz No. 2

The Nerds, David and Lori, are:

a.  Proceeding North on Via Etnea to Piazza Stesecori and the Roman Amphitheatre?

b.  Proceeding West on Via Antonio San Giuliano toward the Greek Amphitheatre?

c.  Going around in circles?

d.  Heading toward the FAST FORWARD at the Palazzo Manganelli?

e.  None of the above.

By the way, on the way to Piazza Stesicoro, the Old Timers may be lost and are stuck in traffic. He is still wearing his gray shirt which he sheds later in the day.

Upon completion of the Detour, the teams receive their next route marker which tells them to return to their cars and proceed to drive south 33 miles on autoroute S114 to the town of SIRACUSA.  When they arrive they must locate the SIRACUSA CANOE CLUE  located on the waterway which seperates the island of Ortygia from the mainland.

Although the route seems to be a simple one, it looks like several of the teams get lost on the way.  And this includes the Nerds if they have not taken the Fast Forward and perhaps MO/JO.

Upon arriving at the Canoe Club, the teams find the next clue box with a clue for the ROADBLOCK. In this roadblock, one member of each team must suit up with helmet and life vest and join a team of four players in YELLOW KAYAKS!  They are playing against a team of four professionals IN RED KAYAKS.They must move the ball (about the size of a standard water polo ball) with their paddles and then send the ball into the goal net.  It is not clear whether they can only touch the ball with their paddles or whether they can pick it up and throw it into the net.  But they do have to score one goal!

The only one we see scoring a goal is Barry (and he did it by flicking it up with his paddle!!)  We also have shots of Ray in a canoe, and Lake cheering on Michelle who is out in a canoe, Tyler cheering on BJ who seems to score a goal as Tyler raises his hand in a NO. 1 gesture, and Eric cheering on Jeremy.  Missing are MO/JO and The Nerds.  From the small patches of blue sky which can be seen behind Eric and Tyler, it looks like they are doing the Roadblock earlier than the others.

Upon successfully scoring a goal, the teams receive instrustions to proceed to the next PIT STOP.  At the pit stop, the last team MAY BE ELIMINATED!

Pop Quiz No. 3:

The Pit Stop is located:

1.  On Ortygia Island at the Tempio di Apollo (the oldest Doric temple in Sicily)?

2.  On Ortygia Island at the Castello Maniace?

3.  In the Piazza in front of the Grand Hotel Ortigia Siracusa?

4.  On the roof of the Grand Hotel Ortigia Siracusa?

5.  None of the above.

We do know that Lake is shown during a confessional on the roof of the hotel but with a different black pullover. He says that he is "still the leader of this team"  which sort of says that Lake and Michelle have not been Philiminated nor NELed.  And whether or not the hotel is the actual pit stop it more or likely is the place the remaining teams spent the night before starting off on Leg 7 on the morrow.

Can we predict a finish order:

If David and Lori did find the FAST FORWARD and did not get lost on the way to the pit stop, they will have come in first. However, if they did not go for a Fast Forward, it looks like they will come in last.  HOWEVER, THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THIS LEG WILL BE A NON ELIMINATION LEG.  There are three NEL's in the race and during three of the last four races, Leg 5 has been the time of the FIRST NEL. (TAR5 LEG 5; TAR6 LEG 4; TAR7 LEG 5; TAR8 LEG5.  It is also interesting to note that in each of these races the FIRST FAST FORWARD came in the same leg as the First NEL.

So I assume that the finish order without a Fast Forward will be:

The Beach Boys
The Hippies
The Old Timers
The Evil Ones
MO/JO
Rayolanda
and sorry to say, last but not least:  THE NERDS

BUT THEY ARE SAVED ONCE AGAIN WHEN THEY ARE INFORMED THAT THIS IS THE FIRST NON ELIMINATION LEG AND THEY MUST SURRENDER ALL OF THEIR MONEY AND EVERYTHING THEY ARE NOT WEARING EXCEPT THEIR PASSPORTS.

Yes, it has happened.  Most drastically in TAR3 when Dennis and Andrew did the FF in England, but still came in 10th and last!! And I think that it happened some other times, but will check further.
Damn, slow on the trigger once again!
