The Amazing Race 9 Two Hour Premiere February 28th  2/21/06

Three-Time Emmy Award Winner "The Amazing Race" Returns to Its International Format Where Teams of Two Will Travel to Exotic Locations, Spanning Five Continents, With a Two-Hour Premiere, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 9:00-11:00 PM ET/PT

"The Amazing Race 9" Moves To Its New Tuesday, 10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT Time Period Beginning March 7

"Here We Go, Baby, Off To Win A Million Dollars" -- The three-time Emmy Award-winning reality adventure series returns to its international format where teams of two will travel to exotic locations, spanning five continents, with stops in the Middle East, Moscow and Sicily, to name a few. The 11 teams, including a Pizza Hut manager, a dentist, a science teacher, a children's minister, a retired physician and a valet, will compete against one another in a race around the world for a $1 million prize. THE AMAZING RACE 9 will begin with a special two-hour premiere on Tuesday, Feb. 28 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Starting Tuesday March 7, the Amazing Race will move to its new timeslot from 10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT. Phil Keoghan is host of the series.

The race begins in Denver, Colorado when teams quickly jet off to their first location, Sao Paulo, Brazil where, upon landing, they must venture deep into the heart of the city to find their next clue at the Hotel Unique. Almost immediately, teams make their way by foot to Viaduto Santa Ifigenia, a pedestrian footbridge overlooking the highway and the Vale do Anhangabuau. One team struggles to locate the clue box, while other teams seem to find it with ease.

At the bridge, teams are faced with their first detour and must choose between finding a local motorcycle shop, where they will have to assemble a motorcycle from scratch, or soar high above the city of San Paolo in a helicopter in order to locate a specific building where they will find their next clue.

   Phil's Comments in TV Guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a one page "Phil Keoghan's Amazing Race Diary" spread in this week's TV Guide. Not too much exciting info...confirms that we have a start from Red Rocks Ampitheater (as spoiled here and shown in commercials) and the first leg travels to Brazil. He notes that the flight that is supposed to arrive first is delayed, and many of the racers don't realize that Spanish is not the official language of Brazil.

He mentions Lake and Michelle ("light packers"), BJ and Tyler (stating they are immediately nicknamed "The Hippies" by other teams), and Dani and Danielle (Tyler dubs them "Double Ds"), as well as praising Yolanda, who has "the most amazing legs" of the racers.

The detour is "Motorhead or Rotorhead" and involves a choice between building a motorcycle or navigating for marked roofs from a helicopter. There is a candle lighting ceremony that the teams must take place in to receive a clue at some point as well.

But we see one of the Double D, apparently on a waterfall. She is with a girl who is wearing  a blue shirt with the logo ALAYA. Guess what? Alaya is like a tourism and adventure company in Brasil.  They have like an Adventure park near Sao Paulo, in a place called Brotas.  I have their webpage but cannot understand a thing in it.

Their webpage is alaya.com.br.

Hope this helps.

I am so excited. :bliss: :woohoo:

another updated version:

TAR 9 Premiere
February 28th, 2006
the Brazilian leg
thanks to puddin's compilation

photo shoots
team introductions: Dani/Danielle
another team introduction: Fran/Barry in their home town
another team: Mojo/Monica & Joseph
teams go to the starting point

all teams start out at the Red Rocks amphitheater in Denver, Colorado, USA. (thanks to Dedwards @ Twop)

the starting point: Red Rocks amphitheater  (thanks to Chateau_d_If)
teams rush to the car and drive to the airport
Here is the route to the airport. (thanks to Chateau_d_If)
Dani/Danielle at the Denver International Airport, Colorado, USA (thanks to slowhatch)

fly to Brazil by Varig/Brazillian airline to São Paulo International Guarulhos Airport (thanks supsandalee)

John & Scott landed in Brazil ( TV-Guide )

after landing, go to the "Hotel Unique" and pick up a new clue

clue instructs them to go to a bridge called Viaduto Santa Ifigenia (thanks to Kogs, Neobie, slowhatch & pingpong)
_____________________________________________________________________________________
DETOUR option #1: Motorhead

It's detour time and teams have a choice of assembling a motorcycle near the Tiger Moto Pecas shop (thanks to slowhatch)
Double Ds, Yolanda/Ray, Lake/Michelle chose this task
_____________________________________________________________________________________
DETOUR option #2: Rotorhead

for the second choice, teams go to the "São Luís Gonzaga" heliport which is near the Santa Ifigenia bridge. (thanks to Boingo)

Bj/Tyler have to wait for their turn at the heliport here
Look like Wanda/Desiree chose this option too
PT-YPR/Brazil (thanks to Slowhatch)

and then teams search for this "Atrium V" heliport and pick up another clue (thanks to Boingo)

any team that chose the rotorhead task have to land at the Grupo Aeromot hangar near the Campo de Marte airport
Campo de Marte (code SBMT).  ( thanks Slowhatch)

after the task, take a cab to the rest point
_____________________________________________________________________________________
REST POINT

Teams have to rest at the Pacaembu stadium overnight. They also have to grab morning bus departure time from selected tent. (thanks to  supsandalee)

_____________________________________________________________________________________
Third Day

Teams take the Santa Anita buses and go to the Brotas town about 250km away from Sao Paulo  (thanks to  Charlierose, supsandalee, Chateau_d_If)

In Brotas, teams have to drive  Volkswagon Bug to the waterfall (thanks to  puddin)
all teams have to rappel down the Cachoeira de Santa Maria waterfall (thanks to  Chateau_d_If)

From TV Guide spoiler:
4 pm: Many of the teams have finished the challenge and have arrived at a warehouse to watch an indigenous cultural ceremony. The teams are required to take part by lighting a candle and handing it to one of the locals to receive their next clue. Some become visibly affected.

5 pm: Finally, everyone starts showing up at the first pit stop. Something I often hear from teams at the first mat chat is that the Race is nothing like they expected. Everyone thinks it looks so easy on TV, but are shocked at how dificult it really is. And this is just the beginning. There's more than 50,000 miles to the finish line, and cameras will be rolling every step of the way.

Actually, Banzai, it was Charlierose (by nine minutes :'( ) who got the Brotas idea.

But you can give me the rappel down Cachoeira de Santa Maria.   :giggle:

Pretty much Phil mainly talked about BJ/ Tyler , John & Scott ( communication problems in Brazil , there looking for info from the locals ) , The Nerds and their kissing , Lisa & Joni ( primadonnas ) & The Dees ( the most asked about by the press ,doesnt know why they are nick-named Double Dees ..tongue in cheek )

these belong here ~( Lake on the zipline is another challenge ?  :groan: )

Loudmouth Lake, who is from Mississippi, and retiree Fran, of Colorado, make their way down the side of a mountain in the upcoming ninth season of The Amazing Race.

Lake Garner navigated his way on a zip line during "The Amazing Race." The show kicks off with a two-hour special tonight at 9 on CBS.

Wow, did that episode seem like a really long edit to anyone else? No roadblock or overnight rest like in other 2-hour eps. I'm surprised they didn't stretch that leg out longer.

Yes it did. A one hour show stretched to 2 hours. It's my favorite show ever but I did expect more action for 2 hours.

Sorry Puddin ... I'm happy they're gone too! If things would have gone more their way we probably would have seen more of their humorous side but it was very hard for me to listen that "accent". I won't miss it a bit.

I don't see the Frosties lasting long but I love their antics! Who can compete with "I peed my pants!"  :rotf:

" Did you fart ?"  :rotf:  . This is going to be one of those seasons that I'll be sad to see anyone of these teams eliminated , Monica got the bratty editing but we know from the past its all in editing ...now Lake & Michelle theres no denying they are the team that we will love to hate but , I'm alright with them...., Lake gives me a reason to throw popcorn at the tv and shake my fist  :meow: .
BJ & Tyler , whats not to love !? These guys totally Rocked ! Love the Nerds .....love the cast ! Great Job Bert

I think I caught a little bit of forboding from the Hippies in last nights episode.  I believe it was Tyler who called the Beach Bums "Nice Guys!" while doing the Rotorhead task.  Think this could come back to bite them later, when the Beach Bums turn on the pack later on in the season.  Classic setup by Van Munster.

I wanted to share will you all, my thoughts of the race.

Finally after all this time, its back. :bliss: :bliss: :bliss:

I really loved the first episode.  Really fast paced, until the final half hour.  But it didn't matter.

It was great to see the leave the US and travel to Brazil.  The language barrier is great.  If you know Spanish you may understand somewhat Portuguese, but once the locals start talking fast, I assure you, Portuguese is very difficult to understand.

What a great city Sao Paulo looks like.  They had the racers on edge all day.  Very nice editing. Very nice episode.

For the racers:

I really loved:
BJ and Tyler  - at first I thought they were going to be annoying, but no, they are intelligent and funny.
The nerds     - very cute couple
              Double D
              Wanda and  Desiree

So So :   Jeremy and Eric
             Joseph and Monica
             Ray and Yolanda
             Fran and Barry

Hated :   Joni and Lisa    -  I really hope they go next they are annoying.
             Lake and Michelle
Scott and John  -   I am so glad they are gone.

Lets see how thing evolve next week.  I cant wait.

I locacted the candle ceremony at 114A Rua Frederico Abranches in the Santa Cecilia part of town.

It is very close to the Moto Pecas shops of the detour.

I haven't had much time and energy to follow the boards, but I do miss y'all!  Just stopped by to say hi, and to chime in with my happiness that the original format Amazing Race is back, and it was great!  Like most here, I love David and Lori (the Nerds) and BJ and Tyler (the hippies, being an old hippy myself).   I like Wanda and Desiree, and Ray and Yolanda too.  The Glamazons' (Lisa and Joni) screaming will get tired fast, and Fran and Barry are no Gretchen and Meredith.  I don't see either of those teams lasting too long.

Hate Lake (so it will be good to see his downfall, no spoiler, just hope).  Did anyone else get the impression that Michelle isn't the retiring belle she claims to be?  There was a point where she said something to Lake and I thought, Uh oh, there's trouble brewing in that little paradise!

thanks, puddin' darlin'.  I may play, though I don't have as much time to follow the usual great analysis here.  FWIW I did start playing the MW Survivor game, and have a whopping 1317 pts, so I'll continue solo so as not to drag down any league (I managed to stay unspoiled for a total of 2 episodes!).  It's worth playing just for MW's witty questions and answers.

When John/Scott abandoned their cab, they were next to a hardware store (photo below and website) that was on the opposite side of bridge from the Unique. Even though they were only a quarter-mile away from the Viaduto, they were right about one thing: their cabbie clearly didn't know what he was doing.

With an hour to kill due to a dental appt., I thought I'd have a go at the intro skyscraper. At first I assumed it would be the roof of the Adams Mark, but no. It's a black building with a "step" design (first photo). In the second photo, note the tilings as well as the two buildings on Phil's right: the D&F clock tower and Independence Plaza. Behind Phil's back is Mile High stadium in the distance (you can see it if you advance the video a few frames). Using GE and Emporis and Denver Skyscrapers, I've chosen Plaza Tower as the most likely candidate. Most of it fits: the exterior appearance, the sightline (photo below with the Plaza upper-right and the clock tower bottom-left), and the motley tiling (kmz attached). The building next to it is a bit troubling, but maybe it's shorter than the Plaza.

Look at the angles of the buildings in the upper left.

Now look at them in the lower right.

More recycling: the first two caps depict a team plane landing in Sao Paulo. Problem is, there's no runway 16R at any of the city's four major airports.
Toolbox question: does anyone know of a database of airline markings? I've included a detail on the plane's tailfin.

I got a computer "generated vibe" from this clip.

How could they get a camera shot from another plane that close to an aircraft that was about to land.  Don't pilots get nervous with other planes around?

That's a Continental plane.

A simple Google search of "runway 16R" reveals a lot of airports with that number.  Well at least Paine Field in Everett WA (Boeing), etc...  I suspect it's a Boeing promo clip, given the proximity of the camera on the chase aircraft.

Paine Field just threw this in for the kewl music

Boingo gets the credit for Paine field. So it's stock footage, then; I wonder if they'll be taking off from Paine or LAX when they leave Brazil  :cocky:.
About the greeter, there are a couple of possibilities:
  • Pacaembu is the home field of the Corinthians; I went through their roster but didn't see an exact match
  • The emblem on his trunks might be the Brazil national team; since he looks a little older, he might be a veteran from a past squad

Other posters have been talking about a hidden task so I thought I'd try and track it down. The first cap shows the card instructing the racers to find "vava" and buy a candle. The closest match I could find is a religious articles store in Santa Cecelia (see listing). Then they walk to 114 Abranches. I've included a map, with the red dot at Vava and the red arrow pointing to Abranches.

Not entirely relevant, but interesting in a geeky sort of way:
Below is a cap of the sisters ticket showing the times and the flight number. Most of you know that Google can show you real-time flight tracking using fboweb. Now GE has been integrated into the search. Type "COA 93" into Google and then click on the fboweb link. You now have the option of a flight status (updated every minute) in 3D in GE. Click on the little plane in GE, and as I write this COA 93 is over the Gulf of Mexico, alt. 31k speed 517kts. Neat.

TOO cute !!

Carissa Explains It All – Episode 2
By Carissa Gaghan
March 13th, 2006

I had to watch this week's episode of The Amazing Race on tape since it was past my bedtime. I saw who was eliminated on CBS.com so it wasn't as exciting.
It was weird that Eric and Jeremy waited for the Hippies since this is a race and you should want to be the first ones to get the next clue.

Dani and Danielle have the biggest backpacks. Don't they know that they might be too big to go on a plane with them? Sometimes when your bags are too big, they make you check them.

If we were on this race, I would really want to do this Roadblock. I would love to be able to rappel down a building.

It was stupid that five people went up the same stairway. I would go to the stairway no else was going up so I wouldn't have to wait in line. BJ and Tyler were smart to go to the last one.

I would pick a blue buggy if there was one there since blue is my favorite color.

Lake and Michelle shouldn't take the bus because a bus has to make a lot of stops and a taxi will take you to where you want to go first.
So far, the teams always say "rapido" to the taxi drivers. Don't they know any other words to tell them?

Why did Danielle go to the top of the building if she was afraid of heights? I don't know why people who are afraid of heights would sign up to go on the race because they always make you do a height thing.

When Eric and Jeremy were talking to the girls at the bus station, I thought they said that the girls were snotty. When I played it again, I heard that they said "naughty". I think the girls are nice.

I wonder if they have any Waffle Houses in Brazil. We had to stop there because some of the teams were going crazy on the bus.

I would pick "Climb It" for the Detour because if you are strong, you could do it fast and I really like to climb things.

It was funny when BJ and Tyler said "who needs reverse gear when you have hippy power!"

Since Jeremy couldn't spank Monica's butt, he had to spank Eric's when Eric got in the car after the Climb. I thought that was really funny.

The sisters shouldn't swear so much. Don't they know kids are watching?
I don't know why my Dad doesn't like Eric and Jeremy. I think it is nice that they don't want the girls to get eliminated.
Dave and Lori did the Press It went pretty fast because Dave looks really strong.

Ray and Yolanda don't look very happy that they are team number 5. Team number 5 is really good!

If I was Fran and Barry and my car died, I would just leave it and try and run to the pitstop. I'm sure the race people would get it later so no one steals it.

I think the girls should have stopped and helped Fran and Barry move the car before they went to the pitstop. That would have been nice since Fran and Barry are old.

It was cool that Lake and Michelle beat Dani and Danielle to the pitstop even though they pulled in after them. It was just like when we pulled in after the Weavers and beat them to the mat.

The sisters must have gotten really lost because it is night now. I feel bad for Phil; he had to stand there a long time waiting for them. I don't feel that bad for the sisters since they weren't that nice to each other.

At the end of Episode 2, my 3 favorite teams are Eric and Jeremy, BJ and Tyler and Dani and Danielle.
