Age, gender war on new 'Survivor'

By JOHN POWELL -- JAM! Showbiz

Tina Scheer lost her only child a week before she was to leave to be on 'Survivor Panama - Exile Island'.
It will be young versus old and men versus women at least for the start of ‘Survivor: Panama - Exile Island'.

The game will begin with four tribes divided along age and gender lines, CBS announced today. The 16 contestants will be paired off in tribes of younger men, younger women and older men, older women. The four tribes will become two during a schoolyard pick in the second episode.

There are to be more castoffs on the 12th edition of the reality show series as well. Not only will one contestant be voted off ‘Survivor Panama’ each week but another will be banished to a desolate island to live on their own for “an undetermined period of time”. The players will also learn that there is a hidden Immunity Idol somewhere on Exile Island. If found, this Immunity Idol could save an individual from being voted out at a future Tribal Council.

During the debut episode, the four tribes will compete in a Reward Challenge and the losing tribe must decide which one of their tribe members will got to Exile Island. This individual will be forced to fend for themselves until the next Immunity Challenge.

As for the fresh faces hoping to outplay, outwit and outlast the others, there are some standouts other than the usual marketing executives and medical sales representatives.

52-year-old Dan Barry is a former NASA astronaut who is a veteran of three space flights. Barry participated in four space walks.

Austin Carty is a published author. His novel ‘Somewhere Beyond Here’ was published in 2003. The novel revolves around a young man coming to grips with the fact that his mother is dying. A customer review on Amazon.com calls the book “an expensive coaster or a good way to start a fire”.

Bruce Kanegai, 58, is a karate instructor and art teacher from California.

Terry Deitz is a retired U.S. Navy fighter pilot.

Tina Scheer is a female lumberjack whose only child was killed in a car accident a week before Scheer was to leave to be on ‘Survivor Panama’.
The other contestants are:

Aras Baskauskas, a 24-year-old yoga instructor from California.

Bobby Mason, a 32-year-old attorney from California.

Cirie Fields, a 35-year-old nurse from South Carolina.

Courtney Marit, a 31-year-old performance artist from California.

Danielle DiLorenzo, a 24-year-old medical sales representative from Florida.

Melinda Hyder, a 32-year-old singer from Tennessee.

Misty Giles, a 24-year-old engineer from Texas.

Nick Stanbury, a 25-year-old financial salesman from Arizona.

Ruth Marie Milliman, a 48-year-old director of retail leasing from South Carolina.

Shane Powers, the 35-year-old owner of entertainment marketing company from California.

Sally Schumann, a 27-year-old social worker from Chicago.

You can read more about the ‘Survivor: Panama - Exile Island’ contestants at the official web site.

The series will premiere on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. EDT.

Walterboro nurse earns chance to be 'Survivor'

By PRENTISS FINDLAY
The Post and Courier

Cirie Fields, an operating room nurse from Walterboro, will be in a national TV spotlight when the 12th edition of "Survivor" debuts at 9 p.m. Feb. 2 on WCSC-TV.

On Monday, CBS announced the 16 new contestants on the show, including Fields, 35, and Ruth Marie Milliman, 48, of Greenville, director of retail leasing at a shopping center.

Ann Jonason, director of nursing at Colleton Medical Center, described Fields as an excellent nurse and a delightful person with a big smile.

"We're thrilled about it. We didn't know she was so talented," Jonason said.

Fields and her husband, Clarencio, recently married, and she has three children from a previous marriage, according to the show's Web site.

Contestants are not allowed to talk, even with family, about what happens to them on the show until after their fate on the program is publicly known.

"It's all top secret," Jonason said.

Fields will be competing as a member of one of four tribes - Older Men, Older Women, Younger Men and Younger Women - in the show dubbed "Survivor: Panama - Exile Island."

At least one castaway each episode will be banished to Exile Island, which is miles away from camp. While being separated from the tribe is not desirable, the castaways will learn that there is a hidden immunity idol somewhere on Exile Island. If found, this immunity idol could save an individual from being voted out at a future Tribal Council.

Fields is not the first South Carolina woman to compete on "Survivor." JoAnna Ward of Orangeburg was a contestant in "Survivor: The Amazon" in 2003.

Elizabethton native featured in upcoming 'Survivor'
Tuesday, January 10, 2006

By JOHN THOMPSON

MELINDA HYDER

ELIZABETHTON - CBS should hope for many Nielsen families from the Elizabethton area over the next few months. The talk around the town Monday was all about Melinda Hyder, 32, a local woman who will be a contestant on the next edition of the popular reality show "Survivor."

"I am awfully proud of her, and I don't know where she got that courage," her mother, Carol Hyder, said after it was revealed on "The Early Show" on CBS Monday.

Carol Hyder said her daughter has always kept fit and has been dancing since she was a toddler.

She also jogs and works out, enjoys water skiing and snow skiing, and has her scuba diving license.

Chrisann Watts-Tull has been friends with Melinda Hyder since they were young girls. She remembers when Hyder first came to her mother's dance studio as a 3-year-old.

"She is incredibly energetic, Watts-Tull said. "I don't think I have ever known anyone else with her energy. She always stood out in the crowd.

Watts-Tull said she also remembers how tough Hyder can be.

"Our families went across country in Winnebagos. I remember she broke her arm in Las Vegas, and she never cried when they were setting it," Watts-Tull said.

Many teachers at Elizabethton High School remember Hyder well, especially since her mother taught honors algebra and pre-calculus at the school for 38 years.

Choral director Debbie Gouge said Hyder was a freshman when she first started teaching at the school.

"She really was a good student," Gouge said, adding that she sang in the choir all four years and was an All-State singer.

Hyder was also a cheerleader and played the French horn in the Betsy Band.

Gouge said music was Hyder's first love, and it paid off with a vocal scholarship to East Tennessee State University.

Gouge believes Hyder has the potential to do very well in the reality show.

"She has cunning skills, and I mean that in a good way," Gouge said. "She knew how to get things accomplished, and she knew how to get her way."

Hyder competed twice in the Miss Tennessee Pageant, finishing in the top 10 and winning the talent competition both times.

She competed as Miss Historic Jonesborough in 1995 and Miss Lexington in 1996.

She continues to perform. Hyder moved to Sevierville and performed at Dollywood for five or six years. While at Dollywood she performed in the '50s Show, Paradise Road, Backstage Pass. Her mother said her favorite show was Christmas in the Smokies.

This past year she left Dollywood to perform with the Showplace Dinner Theater in Sevierville.

When she is not performing, Hyder sells real estate with Sevierville Real Estate and Rentals.

"I hope everyone will be cheering for her. She is just a good East Tennessee girl," Carol Hyder said.

"Survivor: Panama" premieres Thursday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. on CBS.

Lumberjack takes a whack at 'Survivor'

Tina Scheer's a lumberjack, and that's OK for CBS, which has picked the Hayward, Wis., woman for the next version of its "Survivor," which kicks off Feb. 2.

Scheer, 45, is described as a "logging sports promoter/performer."

That sounds pretty accurate for the woman who is billed as "Timber Tina" in her lumberjacking show based in Trenton, Maine. She also has a traveling group called "World Champion Lumberjills," which she describes as "Chics (chicks) with Axes."

While Scheer divides her time between our up north and the East Coast version of up north, she still proclaims her loyalty to the Green Bay Packers.

In a sad note to the announcement of her role in "Survivor," CBS reported that her 16-year-old son, Charlie, had been killed in an auto accident prior to the show
"In spite of this tragedy, Scheer was determined to complete the 'Survivor' adventure," according to CBS.

This 12th edition of "Survivor" starts by dividing the 16 contestants into four tribes on a Panamanian island. Older men will take on older women, and younger men will battle younger women. Eventually, they'll become two tribes, and at least one contestant will be banished to a separate island.

For Wisconsin "reality" TV trivia buffs, Scheer is the second Hayward logger to get on one of these shows.

Local woman drops in on new 'Survivor' quest

By: J.J. KINDRED, Staff Writer January 11, 2006

Sevierville resident Melinda Hyder, who performed at Dollywood for approximately six years, will be a contestant during the forthcoming 12th season of "Survivor" on CBS.
This season's "Survivor: Panama" has the contestants trying to survive conditions on Panama's Exile Island. The first episode airs Feb. 2.

Hyder, 32, was born and raised in Elizabethon, graduating with honors from Elizabethton High School and with a degree in music from East Tennessee State University. Currently single, she lives in Sevierville with her Pomeranian, Lexi.

She could not be reached for comment. The show's rules do not allow contestants to be interviewed while the show is on the air, until they either win or get voted off.

Before working at Dollywood, where she often performed with Dolly Parton, she worked at Six Flags over Georgia in Atlanta for two years and toured Europe while performing on a cruise ship.

She has also worked in real estate, and as a dance and singing instructor and model.

According to the "Survivor" Web site at CBS.com., Hyder describes herself as "vivacious, competitive and compassionate."

She was quoted during a recent CBS appearance saying, "I'm gonna get on somebody's nerves because everybody's gonna get on somebody's nerves at one point. It's just gonna happen. So I'm just gonna try to do it as little as possible."

High school teacher to be on this season's 'Survivor'
January 12, 2006

A Simi Valley man will appear on this season's edition of the reality television show "Survivor," a CBS spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Bruce Kanegai, 58, is one of 16 contestants competing on the 12th edition of the show, "Survivor: Panama -- Exile Island." Kanegai, an art instructor at Simi Valley High School, is the oldest contestant on the show.

For this edition of "Survivor," which premieres Feb. 2, older contestants will face off against each other, and younger participants will do battle with one another, among other activities.

Filming for the season has been completed, but Kanegai cannot comment until he has either been voted off the island or declared the winner on air, a CBS spokeswoman said.

"Sorry, I can't talk to you about it," Kanegai said when asked by a reporter to comment on his time in Panama.

In 2002, Kanegai filmed a "Worst-Case Scenario" episode for TBS, where he had to handle a rattlesnake.

Mainer on 'Survivor'

Mainer on 'Survivor'

"Timber" Tina Scheer may get a chance to put some of her lumberjill skills to the test when she's surviving in the rainforests of Panama on the new season of "Survivor," which premieres at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, on CBS.

Scheer, the owner and emcee of the Great Maine Lumberjack Show in Trenton, which operates every night during the summer, was selected to be one of 16 "castaways" on "Survivor: Panama." The 45-year-old world champion lumberjill can't personally comment on her experience on the show, since CBS doesn't want to give anything away regarding the ending, but friends and family seem to think she has an excellent shot at winning it all and taking home the big prize - a million bucks. That'll buy her a lot of wood to chop.

Allison Melton, a lumberjill who worked at the Great Maine Lumberjack Show and who has traveled to various logging sports competitions with Scheer, received the news that Timber Tina was going to be on "Survivor" just a few days ago.

"She disappeared for a while," said the University of Maine senior, who had not heard from her fellow lumberjill for a short period toward the end of 2005. "But we had absolutely no idea she was going to be on 'Survivor.' "

Scheer, who splits her time between Maine and her hometown of Hayward, Wis., had told everyone she was going to British Columbia on lumberjill business, when she was actually roughing it in Central America. Her sister Judy Hoeschler, who lives in Wisconsin and is herself a world champion log roller, had no clue at all.

"I picked her up at the airport in Milwaukee," Hoeschler said. "And I said 'God, you're really tan. Is it that sunny in British Columbia?' She's very clever about keeping it a secret. All she ever says is 'I was awesome.' "

Scheer has won world titles for logging sports in both North America and Australia. She's a champion log roller, and is also one of few women who competes in underhand chopping and crosscut sawing.

Another thing people didn't know was that she had originally planned to be on the show the previous season, "Survivor: Guatemala." She had applied to be on the show last year, confiding only in her 16-year-old son, Charlie, and when she was selected as a contestant, she didn't tell a soul.

When Charlie was killed in a car crash last spring, those plans were put on hold.

Hoeschler said it's more than just a game show for Tina. It's been a long year of grieving and coping, and the choice to appear on "Survivor" was a difficult one.

"I think all the emotions surrounding the circumstances has made this a really hard journey for her," said Hoeschler. "She misses Charlie so much, and this has been such an ordeal for her, that she just needed to do this. It was something they'd started together."

Come Feb. 2, we'll see just what Scheer managed to pull off while she was surviving down in Panama. Melton thinks it's her dynamic personality that will see her through to success.

"I bet she's going to do really well, just knowing her personality," said Melton. "She's probably got some tricks up her sleeves. She's a sneaky one."

"She's pretty tough in both the physical and mental departments," said Hoeschler. "She's an extrovert and an entertainer. Any girl that can log roll and swing axes has a pretty good chance, I'd say." (Emily Burnham, BDN staff)

Survivor' Has Connecticut Connection
January 12, 2006
By ROGER CATLIN, Courant TV Critic  A pilot from Simsbury and an astronaut from Norwalk are among the 16 castaways in the 12th go-round of "Survivor," which begins next month.

Terry Deitz, 46, a retired Navy pilot and airline pilot from Simsbury, and Dan Barry, 52, a Norwalk native and retired astronaut from South Hadley, Mass., are among the oldest contestants for "Survivor: Panama - Exile Island," which starts Feb. 2 on CBS. The series title comes from a cruel new twist, in which one of the castaways is banished to a separate island miles away, where an immunity idol is hidden.
Also new this season will be the division into four teams: older men vs. older women vs. younger men vs. younger women.

Deitz and Barry are among the older men, of course, though neither can claim to be the oldest contestant. That distinction belongs to karate instructor Bruce Kanegai, 58, of Simi Valley, Calif.

Deitz, a New Jersey native, moved to Simsbury in 1994 after discharge from active duty; he retired from the Navy Reserve in 2001 and flies American Airlines routes to London and the Caribbean. He and his wife, Trish, have two children, Kayla and Daniel.

After a career in medicine and engineering, Barry was selected by NASA to be a mission specialist on three Space Shuttle flights in 1992 that included four space walks. He retired in April 2005. He and his wife, Sue, have two children, Jenny and Andy. With five patents to his credit, he builds robots for his own company, Denbar Robotics.

Timber Tina Scheer proves she's a 'survivor'
Paul Mitchell
Sawyer County Record

She’s been recognized in Hayward for years, and now her face will be seen on television screens across America and ‘round the world.

Hayward native Tina Scheer, 45, daughter of Donna and Fred Scheer Sr., is a castaway on CBS’s “Survivor: Panama — Exile Island,” which will premiere at 8 p.m. Feb. 2.

Timber Tina, as she’s known, is a well-known lumberjill and timber sports promoter, as well as the owner of Timber Tina’s Great Maine Lumberjack Show, a timber sports venue in Ellsworth, Maine, similar to Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows here in Hayward, owned by Tina’s brother, Fred. Tina Scheer’s show has a twist, however — a team called the Timber Tina’s World Champion Lumberjills, an all-female timber team that takes its traveling show on the road.

When she was 8 years old Scheer began logrolling, which was her springboard into timber sports. According to the Web site at www.lumberjills.com, Scheer is the only woman who competes in the chopping, sawing and logrolling events. She is also responsible for introducing Women’s Chopping and Sawing at Hayward’s Lumberjack World Championships.

She has traveled to Australia 10 times with her exhibitions and was one of the first women to chop and single saw at the Royal Sydney Show in Australia in 2001. She was also the only female member of a team of axemen to travel and compete to South Africa.

Scheer has also been the voice of the Stihl Timbersports Series for 10 years.

The mission statement of Timber Tina’s World Champion Lumberjills reads, “It is our goal at World Champion Lumberjills to advance and promote female athletes in logging sports worldwide.”

According to a CBS press release, Scheer described herself as a female in a male-dominated business, and “I have to struggle a lot,” she said.

In this season of survivor, the struggle will be familiar, as the 16 castaways are divided into tribes by sex as well as age: the four teams are Older Men versus Older Women versus Younger Men versus Younger Women.

In the second episode the four tribes will become two during what CBS calls a “schoolyard pick.”

There’s a new twist to this season of the top-rated series — at least one castaway each episode will be banished to a separate island miles away from camp to fend for himself or herself for an undetermined period of time. While being separated from the tribe may not be easy, there is a hidden Immunity Idol somewhere on Exile Island which, if found, could save a castaway from being voted off the island at a Tribal Council.

Scheer was originally accepted as a castaway for “Survivor 11: Guatemala.” Tragically, Scheer’s 16-year-old son, Charlie Shumway, was killed in an automobile accident on Highway 27 during a thunderstorm on June 11, 2005, just about a week before she was to leave to begin filming.

So what are the odds of Scheer being the “Sole Survivor” who outwits, outplays and outlasts the other castaways in the quest for the $1 million prize?

She’s a world-renowned lumberjill. She’s won silver in the Great Outdoor games. Having grown up here in the northwoods, Tina is most comfortable in the outdoors. She is an avid hiker and biker, kayaks regularly and enjoys cross-country skiing.

And she’s from Hayward.

What do you think?

Latest 'Survivor' still
game for anything

SURVIVOR: PANAMA – EXILE ISLAND. Tonight at 8, CBS.
So many tribes and challenges, winners and losers have come and gone since the first "Survivor" with Richard Hatch, that this CBS show has evolved into many games at once.

Not only is there the game to be the last person standing, but there are other perilous contests, and all of them have proven very interesting.

First, there are the games within the game played by the contestants. These include the increasingly sophisticated and fast-paced strategies and alliances: In tonight's second episode of "Survivor: Panama - Exile Island" (at 8), every team, at this early stage, already has at least one alliance in place.

They also include the media-savvy jockeying for screen time: As the observant have noted, the spoils of post-"Survivor" celebrity go not necessarily to the winner, but to some of the squeakiest wheels.

This strategy can backfire even when it works, as the easy-to-hate Jonny Fairplay came to discover in his subsequent roller-coaster ride back to anonymity.

But Shane Powers, who tried to kick a three-pack-a-day cigarette habit the day he started "Survivor," is a train wreck who's impossible to ignore in these early episodes of "Panama."

On tonight's show, there may be no one he leaves un-irritated - but since I haven't seen the results of tonight's tribal council, I don't know whether he leaves, period. Other tribe members are targeted as well, for reasons both good and bad.

The other way the gamesmanship has grown more intense is in the way "Survivor" is designed and hosted. Executive producers Mark Burnett and Tom Shelly have built this year's show on quicksand, shaking up the footing at every opportunity. Sending one contestant at a time to spend solo time on a neighboring island is one such trick. Tonight, reshuffling teams again, with a schoolyard-pick approach and an accompanying surprise twist, is another.

And presiding over it all is Jeff Probst, whose skills as host and interviewer have gotten as sharp and flinty as the fire-starting tools he hands out.

During one challenge, Probst's play-by-play calls one team "absolutely inept." At the tribal council that ends tonight's episode, he says, "This tribe seems a little all over the map." He's observing and scolding at the same time, and it's well-deserved.

Last week, the woman who caught the biggest fish in the show's history, give or take a shark, was voted off immediately. Tonight, no matter what happens at the council, other erratic and absurdly stupid behavior is on view, including the launching of a spear gun without holding onto the gun part.

One tribe member's presence is described as "psychotic bad-idea detox" - not by Probst, but by the player himself. Welcome to "Panama - Exile Island," another "Survivor" winner. No matter who emerges with the money.
