Phil, in flashback: The following episode of the Race was filmed just before New Orleans was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. We look forward to when New Orleans once again takes its place among the world's great cities.

Phil: Seven teams left Huntsville, Alabama, headed to Talladega Motor Speedway where they pedaled around the track. The Weavers didn't want to go, but mother's leadership helped them finish. Stassi and Dad argued over directions, and Stassi broke down. Then they got lost right outside their hometown of New Orleans. The Linz family got an eyeful (moon) from the Bransens. At the Detour, the Gaghans were down on their luck (cards) while the Paolos teamwork paid off. Bransens were first, and Schroeders poor navigation cost them the race.

Six families remain. Who will be eliminated next?

Bransen, 12:40 am, CLUE: Fly to Panama City, Panama.
Phil: When they land, make their way 31 miles to the Smithsonian Institute, travel to this island, search for scientist Ricardo Diaz for the next clue.

Paolos depart, 12:41 am.
Mom conf: My ideal situation at the end of this race? DJ puts his arms around me and says 'I love you, Ma!'

Linz, 12:49 am.
Dude thinks they're going to Panama City FLORIDA.

Bransen leaves next, checking flights by cell phone.

Mom Paolo barks instructions.
Son: Please be quiet now, please!?

At the airport, Linz arrive first.
Bransen next.
Paolos arrive next.
They share ticket info.

Godlewskis leave next.
Christine: I may be bossy, but my ideas are the best!
Weavers depart, 1:52.
Daughter, conf: Alliances are stooopid!

Gaghans, 1:54.

Godlewski, Weaver, then Gaghan families arrive at Louis Armstrong Airport.
All teams check times, flights.

Linz step up to the plate for Flight #1.
The line forms to the rear, Mom Paolo ... lol
Bransen, Flight #1.
Paolos argue.
Paolos, Flight #1.

Godlewski, Flight #2.
Gaghan, Flight #2.
Weaver, Flight #2.

Panama.

Flight #1, arrives 6:40 pm.
Linz shows the cabbie his CLUE.
Bransen, Paolos get cabs.
Linz, currently in 1st.
Cab driver speaks Spanish.
Daughter: I love the fact that you speak Spanish! Now what was he saying!?

Paolos move into 1st in the cab ride, arrive at the Smithsonian.
They look for the marked boat.
FIRST DEPARTURE, 7 am.

They're sleeping overnight.
Linz, 2nd to the boat.
Bransen, 3rd.

9:40, 2nd flight lands.
Teams race out of the airport to the Institute.

I won't even bother to say how stupid that exchange was between the Weavers and their cabbie. "Burrito" indeed.

The final 3 teams find out they're caught up again.

MORNING.
All 6 teams line up ...
Paolos leave 1st.
Linz leave 2nd.
Bransens leave 3rd.
Each team gets its own boat.
Godlewski, 4th.
Gaghan, 5th.
Weaver, 6th.
All six teams are in boats, headed for the island.

Last week, teams travelled from Huntsville, Alabama to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to New Orleans, Louisiana during their race through the U.S. around the world. We saw several teams not think during a stopover, and as a result, the Paolo family benefitted, and the Schroeder family were eliminated from the Race.

Episode 5 - We're Getting Out of the Country, Girls
We are at Preservation Hall in New Orleans, Louisiana, the fourth Pit Stop in a race around the world. Here teams have a chance to eat, sleep and mingle with each other, but maybe not with the Weavers, since they're pretty aloof, and they have no idea what's in store for them on this leg.

The Bransen family, who were the first team to arrive at 12:40pm, are the first to leave at 12:40am. They're told to fly 2000 miles to Panama City, Panama and make their way 31 miles to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, take a boat to an island, and find a man who will give them their next clue.

Paolo, 12:41am. They're happy to be leaving the country.

Linz, 12:49am. They all squeeze into a small taxi. The Bransens and Paolo get theirs later. Bransen call ahead and find out that the Continental flight arrives about 2.5 hours before the American flight

Godlewski, 1:39am. They check a map and get a cab.

Weaver, 1:52am. They think that alliances are stupid.

Gaghan, 1:54am. Their strategy is to stay second-to-last.

All the teams are lined up at Continental. Linz get on, as do Bransen and Paolo. The flight fills up after that, and so Gaghan, Godlewski and Weaver are forced to take American.

Panama City, 6:40pm. The first teams arrive, and head to the Institute. We hear our first rapido, por favor of the show. Paolo arrives first and we find out that the place opens at 7am, meaning that they're bottlenecked. The teams are camping out.

9:10pm, the remaining teams arrive and find out that everyone's bunched up.

Morning, the teams head out in the order they arrive and look for the "dude in the hammock". It's a lovely view. Linz seem to have a slow boat, and get passed by everyone. Except Gaghan, whose driver is stopping to pick up a buddy. Nice.

Driver relents.
Mom: That was a scare!

Island, Paolos in 1st looking for Ricardo Diaz.
They find a man, who is NOT Ricardo.
Bransen, 2nd.
Godlewski, 3rd, Weaver 4th.
Godlewskis find another fake Ricardo.
Bransen dad can't run.
Linz, 5th, arrive on the island.
Gaghan, now in last, still not at the island.

Godlewski, 1st, DETOUR.
There was a FAST FORWARD.
Rhythm, or Coos.
Rhythm, ride by bus to Caso Viejo, collect 4 musical instruments, deliver on foot to Take 5 Jazz & Wine where the bandleader gives them the next CLUE.
Coos, use binoculars to search a nearby forest for local birds. Find them on this Aviary chart. If they circle the wrong birds, they have to repeat the task till they get it right.

Phil: This is the only FAST FORWARD in the entire race. Teams make their way to the Pacific side, and find the crane on Pier 14. Teams break into 2 pairs and team bungee jump for the FF.

Godlewskis, Rhythm.
Paolos choose the FF.
Weaver, 3rd.
Godlewski, then Linz.
Teams find Ricardo one by one.
Bransen, 5th.
Gaghan 6th, yelling at the boat driver to hurry it up!

Weavers move into 1st with some fancy boating.
Rapido! Rapido!
Teams exhort their drivers.
The Paolos are disgusted with their driver as teams pass.

Godlewski now 1st, may have passed their dock!
Paolos move into 1st, Bransen 2nd.
Godlewskis have to tell their driver where to go.
So do the Linz.
Gaghans catch up.
Weaver: Andale!
Godlewskis fall into 4th.
Weavers, last.

The bus they'll take is called the Diabolo Rojo (Red Devil).
Linz and Godlewski ... "Let's get rid of this Florida team! They're rude!"

Paolos stick with the Fast Forward, head to the Pacific side.

Gaghans also going for the Fast Forward.
Dad: You ready to bungee jump, Billy?
Billy looks beplexed.

Mom Weaver asks directions.

[puddin]

Billy: I see the other team! We can beat 'em!
Buses stop.
Paolos and Gaghans race on foot.
Ticket belongs to ... PAOLOS.
Mom Gaghan: No way they'll do it. They're scared.
Paolos ascend the elevator to the top of the crane with lots of "Omigod! Omigod!"
Dad Gaghan: They only have to have 1 not do it.
Mom Paolo: If we don't do it the next team gets to do it.

The Paolos Dad and Son DO IT, shrieking all the way.
Mom Gaghan: They did it. Oh, man.
Mom and DJ line it up for the next jump.
DJ: I can't do it.

Back in the Panama Canal, the Gaghan's driver agrees to drop them off first.

Teams land on the island and start searching around for Diaz. Turns out that there are lots of guys in hammocks. Linzes finally arrive and start looking.

Godlewski first. They note the Fast Forward, and decline to do it. They open the clue and see a Detour - Rhythm or Coos.

Rhythm - travel by Red Devil bus to Costo and collect 4 instruments and deliver them to Take Five Bar

Coos - Take the bus to an aviary and find representations of five local birds and circle the correct ones. If they're incorrect, they'll have to start over.

Paolos read the Fast Forward. They need to travel to the Pacific side of the Canal and do a tandem bungee jump, and this is the only Fast Forward in the Race. They decide to do it.

Weavers decide to go for Rhythm. Bransen, Coos. Linz, Rhythm. Gaghan, Fast Forward.

Teams are now racing for the docks. Paolo, Bransen and Gaghan land first. Godlewski, Linz and Weaver miss the stop and are behind.

Paolos are going for the Fast Forward, as are Gaghan. Godlewski and Linz decide to team up to finish the Rhythm Detour, and force the Weavers us.

Bransens get help to get to the Detour. Weavers hire a taxi to follow.

Paolos arrive at the Detour and note the height. It's a footrace to the Fast Forward, but the Paolos get there first. Gaghans stick around, thinking that the New Yorkers won't do it. Stupid.

DJ and Marion are apprehensive about jumping, and I'm sure that we'll see them jump after the

DJ: I'll jump.
Mom Paolo: The first step. After that, gravy.
THEY JUMP.
Lots of shrieking, and they descend.

Dad Gaghan: Sonofabitch! We have to get 4 instruments.
Billy: Hopefully we're still in this.

Mom Paolo: My sons love me! That's it!
CLUE: Proceed to the Pitstop.
Phil: The Mira Flores Locks.

Paolos #1 they win a trip to Panama !!

Weavers go birdwatching.
Birds, birds, everywhere.
Tippi Hedren, where are you!?
They've quickly marked off 3, 4, then ... which Toucan? They think they have 5.
Man: Sorry folks. Try again.

Bransens begin the birdwatch.
Weavers start over.

Linz, Godlewski pledge to work together on Rhythm Detour.

Paolos, head for the pitstop.
Man: Welcome to Panama.
Phil: Paolo family, you're team #1. You've won a trip for 4 to Panama after the Race. Did you ever think you'd go bungee jumping with the kids?
Mom: DJ kissed me on the way down!
DJ conf: The way we argue, that was kind of special

Bransen, Weaver, race to finish birdwatching.
Weavers finish, now in 2nd, read the CLUE in bad Spanglish.
Phil: They head to the Estadio (stadium) for the next clue.

Dad Bransen: It's one of those, like, talking birds.
Man: You got it.
Bransens now 3rd.

Linz, Godlewski still instrument-gathering.
They compliment their newfound alliance skills.
Meh.
Meanwhile, the Gaghans get their first instrument.
The Godlewskis and Linz finish, dancers celebrate with a brief dance.
They put the instruments in the correct cases.
CLUE: Travel by Diabolo Rojo to Estadio de los ___es (sorry folks, that's the best I can do without closed captioning!)

Stadium.
CLUE: ROADBLOCK.
Who can hit in the pinch?
Phil: They have to play the most popular Panama sport, baseball. They step into the cage, 3 pitches per turn at bat. If they don't get a hit, they go to the end of the line. A hit, or a homer, and they get the next CLUE.

Beth Bransen makes the first OUT.
Godlewskis, Linz, arrive.
Rolly Weaver gets a ... well, not a hit. He's safe on an error.
It counts.
Teams are "rude to Rolly!"
Phil: The last family to check in at Mira Flores Locks may be eliminated.

Beth Bransen back up, and she's down to her last pitch.
Finally, a hit.
Whoo-hoo!
Bransens, now in 3rd.

Nick Linz, a hit in his first at-bat.
They're in 4th.
Linz comments, out of order: Hope the chicks don't get eliminated. Florida's in front of us. Tell her to screw herself.

Dad Gaghan decides to bat.
Sharon Godlewski at bat, OUT.
Dad Bill Gaghan, knocks it deep into the outfield, a hit.
They're in 5th.
Kids: Dad! You did good!
Mom: You did awesome!
Dad conf: Feels so good to come back from the bottom like that!

Sharon Godlewski back up to bat.
Sister: Come on Sharon! You can do it!
She's exhausted, head down, leaning on the bathead.

We're back, and of course the Paolos jump. The Gaghans are now definitely in last, and decide to do the Rhythm Detour. The Paolos are told to go to the Miraflores Locks and the Pit Stop.

Bransens are lost. Weavers arrive at the park and look at bords. They finish rather quickly, but get it wrong the first time. Bransens arrive and start the task. Godlewski and Linz arrive for the Rhythm task.

Paolos arrive at the Pit Stop and win a trip to Panama - but they're already there!

The Weavers finish and get their clue. They must travel 2 miles to a Baseball Stadium and find their next clue. Bransens finish the task. Meanwhile the Linz and Godlewski families are blowing through the task.

Gaghans arrive and start the Rhythm task. The Linz and Godlewski finish and head to the stadium. The Gaghan family get the instruments quickly.

Weavers arrive and find a Roadblock - they must hit a base hit or homerun off a Little League pitcher. They only get 3 pitches at a time. Rolly takes it. Bransens arrive and Beth takes it.

Godlewski and Linz arrive, Sharon and Nick take it.

Rolly completes the task (barely) and travel 5 miles to the Pit Stop. The last team to arrive may be eliminated. Gaghans arrive at the bar and complete the Detour.

Beth finishes the Roadblock. Nick gets a hit on the first hit. Gaghans arrive at the stadium and Bill takes it. Like Nick, he gets it on the first swing. So the Godlewski girls are obviously last. We'll see how Sharon does after the

inpulse We're back, and Sharon hits the ball. They're off to the Pit Stop.

Weavers arrive as team number two. Bransen and Linz are racing, and the Gaghans get stuck behind a pickup truck. The Godlewskis are putting on lots of clothes in anticipation of a non-elimination leg. Linz and Bransen arrive and race to the Checkpoint. Bransens are third, Linzes are fourth.

Gaghans arrive and are running, and are team number five. Godlewski girls are the last team to arrive, but it's a non-elimination leg. Phil then robs them of their money and possessions except the clothes on their back, and asks "Do you know how ridiculous you look?" Hah!!
