Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 1, "Just a Beaver hero"
Film date: 2018-04-23 - 2018-04-24

This season start at Vancouver Island. The 10 teams are riding tandem bicycles to the starting line. They are:
  • Chewy & Happy, Retired Canadian air force pilots and best friends from southern Ontario
  • Leanne & Mar, Mentors and cheerleaders from Toronto
  • Martina & Phil, Volunteering siblings from Vancouver
  • Taylor & Courtney, RCMP officers and siblings from Langley BC
  • Courtney & Adam, Engaged first responders from Calgary, Alberta
  • Todd & Anna, Dating advocates from Edmonton, Alberta
  • Zainab & Monica, Navy sailors and friends from Toronto
  • Dylan & Kwame, Coaches and friends from Fort Mc Murray, Alberta
  • Joseph & Akash, Volunteers and friends from Toronto
  • Nancy & Mellisa, Elite athletes and team mates from Tabor and Pine Lake, Alberta

The starting line is a Hatley castle and teams gather on one of the lawns. Jon tells teams that the grand prize will be two cars (one each), one around the world trip for two, $250,000 and the title.

The first clue can be found on the bags which are somewhere on the castle grounds. And once Jon says go teams can run and find them. Actually the bags are lined up just in front of the castle. And since that is where all the camera crews are waiting the teams have no problem finding them.

The first clue is a route info: "Take the BC ferries and drive to Squamish, BC". Teams must now jump into one of the waiting cars and drive themselves to the ferry (36km 34min).

So the race starts with some self driving and navigation.
"Oh my god, what a rush", Nancy
"We already look like the dumb jocks", Kwame as they have trouble finding the ferry terminal

All teams, and their cars, travel on the ferry from Swatz Bay to Tsawwassen terminal. all but one make the first ferry (although Courtney & Adam barely make it). Dylan & Kwame just miss it and have to take the next ferry which leaves 2 hours later.

The ferry takes 1:35.

Once on the main land teams must find the Sea to sky gondola in Squamish (105km 1h22min). Getting there means to drive along the outskirts of Vancouver. But Zainab & Monica take a detour trough downtown, which turns out to not be a shortcut.

When teams arrive to the Sea to sky gondola they find a sign up sheet. They sign up in the following order:

Gondola 1:
  Chewy & Happy
  Nancy & Mellisa

Gondola 2:
  Leanne & Mar
  Todd & Anna

Gondola 3:
  Martina & Phil
  Taylor & Courtney

Gondola 4:
  Courtney & Adam
  Joseph & Akash

Gondola 5:
  Zainab & Monica
  Dylan & Kwame

The episode is cut so it looks like teams go directly from the sign up sheet onto the gondolas. But in reality they spent the night nearby and the gondola ride happened the following morning.

At the top teams find a clue box which contains a road block: "Who wants to save a beaver?"

In this road block contestants must ride a short zip-line out to a net suspended in mid air 500m above the canyon floor. Here they will be strapped into a bungy-jump rig. The task is then to jump from the net and to grab a beaver toy hanging nearby. They have to jump high and far enough to grab the beaver before gravity takes over and they plunge towards the canyon floor way down there. If they fail they have to go to the back of the line and try again.

Teams arrive to the road block in the following order:
  1. Chewy & Happy
  2. Nancy & Mellisa
  3. Leanne & Mar
  4. Todd & Anna
  5. Taylor & Courtney
  6. Martina & Phil
  7. Courtney & Adam
  8. Joseph & Akash
  9. Dylan & Kwame
 10. Zainab & Monica

"I've never done anything like this", Chewy
"Just a beaver hero", Courtney (with Adam) gets the title
"Thank god I'm already fixed", Chewy seems to find the harness tight

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+1)Nancy* & Mellisa  (1-0)On her 1st attempt
2(+1)Leanne* & Mar     (1-0)On her 1st attempt
3(+1)Todd* & Anna      (1-0)On his 1st attempt
4(+1)Taylor* & Courtney(1-0)On his 1st attempt
5(+1)Martina & Phil*   (0-1)On his 1st attempt
6(+3)Dylan* & Kwame    (1-0)On his 1st attempt
7(-6)Chewy* & Happy    (1-0)On his 2nd attempt

9(-2)Courtney & Adam*  (0-1)On his 2nd attempt
10(-2)Joseph & Akash*   (0-1)On his 2nd attempt

Route info: "Drive yourselves to Squamish days loggers sports festival and search for your next clue".

Teams reach the clue box by the festival grounds (6km 5min) in the following order:
  1(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
2(+0) Leanne & Mar, while Mellisa is doing the task
3(+1) Taylor & Courtney, after the first two teams have left
  4(-1) Todd & Anna
5(+0) Martina & Phil, after the previous teams have left
6(+0) Dylan & Kwame, while Martina is climbing
7(+0) Chewy & Happy, after the previous teams have left
8(+0) Zainab & Monica, after the previous teams have left
9(+1) Joseph & Akash, while Zainab is doing the task
10(-1) Courtney & Adam, after all other teams have left

ROAD BLOCK

Who's ready to log on?

NOTE: The team
member who did not
perform the last Road
Block MUST attempt this
one.

In this road block racers bust gear up and climb to the top of an 80ft pole using spiked shoes and a rope.

"I have a hard time gauging how much I need to push her. I don't really know Mellisa much", Nancy
"This is really really tiring", Anna
"It looks pretty darn high", Martina as she is gearing up for the climb

As she is climbing Martina doubts her ability to complete this challenge. But after a commercial break she has pulled herself together and keeps at it and eventually reaches the top.

"To be in last place is the worst feeling, and I'm terrified of heights", Courtney (with Adam)

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Nancy & Mellisa*  (1-1)
2(+0)Leanne & Mar*     (1-1)
3(+0)Taylor & Courtney*(1-1)
4(+0)Todd & Anna*      (1-1)
5(+1)Dylan & Kwame*    (1-1)
6(-1)Martina* & Phil   (1-1)
7(+0)Chewy & Happy*    (1-1)
8(+1)Joseph* & Akash   (1-1)
9(-1)Zainab* & Monica  (1-1)
10(+0)Courtney* & Adam  (1-1)

Route info: "Drive yourselves to Darrell bay and search for your next clue"

Teams reach the clue box at Darrell bay (6km 8min) in the following order:
  1(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
  2(+0) Leanne & Mar
  3(+0) Taylor & Courtney
  4(+0) Todd & Anna
  5(+0) Dylan & Kwame
  6(+0) Martina & Phil
  7(+0) Chewy & Happy
  8(+0) Joseph & Akash
  9(+0) Zainab & Monica
 10(+0) Courtney & Adam

Teams must now grab a tandem paddle board and make their way out into the bay. Here they will find over 20 buoys, each with a crab trap submerged below it. Teams must pull up a crab trap and bring it back to shore. Each trap contains one crab, but not all of them are of regulation size. If it is too small they have to go back out and get another one.

It is not shown in the episode but according to interviews some teams had to go back for new crabs many times.

Nancy & Mellisa overthinks the task and thinks that the obvious buoys are too easy and that the traps must be elsewhere. But they quickly spot their mistake.
"I don't think it's here, we've got to hustle our asses back", Nancy

The last five teams all catch up with each other at this task. Which is demoralizing for the first of them but very uplifting to the last ones. And it seems they all finish very close to each other as well.

Teams complete this task in the following order:
  1(+1) Leanne & Mar
  2(-1) Nancy & Mellisa, just after #1
  3(+1) Todd & Anna
  4(+1) Dylan & Kwame
5(-2) Taylor & Courtney, their 4th crab was big enough
  6(+3) Zainab & Monica
  7(+1) Joseph & Akash
  8(-2) Martina & Phil
  9(+1) Courtney & Adam
10(-3) Chewy & Happy, say they tried about 15 crabs

The next clue instructs teams to drive to the Britannnia mine museum (8km 7min). Here they must find Mill No 3 where Jon and the pit stop are waiting.

There is an exciting footrace for last. Joseph & Akash have the lead but miss the entrance. In the end Joseph is first, Happy is second and Akash is third.

Teams reach the mat in the following order:
1(+0) Leanne & Mar, win a trip to Tokyo
  2(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
  3(+0) Todd & Anna
  4(+0) Dylan & Kwame
  5(+0) Taylor & Courtney
  6(+0) Zainab & Monica
  7(+1) Martina & Phil
  8(+1) Courtney & Adam
  9(-2) Joseph & Akash
10(+0) Chewy & Happy, are eliminated

"If you are at loss for some of Mel's little idiosyncrasies, come and see me", Jon to Nancy (Jon has been teammate with Mellisa)
"To be part of Amazing Race Heroes edition is humbling, it's an honor to represent the men and women in the armed forces", Happy

Due to some traveling the first episode is rather late. And upcoming episodes may also be late since there is a lot of traveling in the coming weeks.

Don't worry about it! Thank you for doing them and we will he happy to read them whenever they come!  :)

Pretty sure you knew that last season

ROUTE INFO

Make your way to Dawson
city Yukon. Search
outside the arrivals
terminal for your 2018
Chevrolet Silverado High
Country and find your
next clue inside.

You have $350 for this
leg of the race.

NOTE: In this leg there
are three Express
Passes up for grabs!

"We're trying to find our way because we've only met a few times", Nancy

Martina has realize that she is the slowest runner so they had a quick look at what they actually need and consolidated that into one backpack. So on the way to the Vancouver airport they stop and give her backpack and some of their extra food to a homeless man.

Teams start this leg by driving to the Vancouver airport. It seems production has provided tickets because everybody is on the same flight to Dawson city via Whitehorse. It also seems teams spent the night in Whitehorse since it is early morning when they arrive in Dawson City.

The first clue in the cars tells teams to load their car with a campsite kit. Then they must drive to the Dredge No. 4 National Historic Site (26km 27min). Here racers will choose one of nine stations and set up a campsite with all of the gear to exactly match a provided example.

There is also a bonus prize here. The fastest team will win $5000 from Woods (a race sponsor).

"Me and Adam do a lot of camping", Courtney
"We're going to rock this challenge", Adam is sure they will get the bonus prize

As expected the campsite is elaborate. There is a tent, with an inflatable frame, beds, chairs, backpacks, stove etc. Lots of small details.

We quickly realize that some teams are used to tents with an inflatable frame, and some are not.
 "We do not camp", Martina

Joseph & Akash are having bigger problems than the others. They soon realize that they forgot to bring their tent, so they have to go back to the airport to pick it up. And given the distance this must cost them close to an hour.

True to their predictions Courtney & Adam is the first team to ask for a check. But they have missed one detail. It takes a while for them to realize that they have forgotten a gear net, and then it takes them a while to find it.

In the end teams complete this challenge in the following order:
 1. Todd & Anna
 2. Dylan & Kwame
 3. Courtney & Adam
 4. Nancy & Mellisa
 5. Leanne & Mar
 6. Taylor & Courtney
 7. Martina & Phil
 8. Zainab & Monica
 9. Joseph & Akash

The next clue tells teams to drive themselves to the bank of British North America in downtown Dawson City and search for their next clue.

The clue box by the bank is easy to find as it is located on the corner just outside the bank (16km 23min). Teams arrive here in the following order:
 1(+0) Todd & Anna
 2(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 3(+0) Courtney & Adam
 4(+1) Leanne & Mar
 5(-1) Nancy & Mellisa
 6(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 7(+0) Martina & Phil
 8(+0) Zainab & Monica
 9(+0) Joseph & Akash

ROUTE INFO

It's time for a gold rush!

Using a GPS device,
collect 5 gold coins
located at different GPS
waypoint sites around
Dawson City and
exchange them at the
Bank of British North
America for your next
clue.

NOTE: There is one
Express Pass located at
three different GPS
waypoint sites.

The provided GPS units have nine waypoint sites programmed. Five leads to people handing out gold coins, three to an express pass and one is a dud. The express passes are located at the cemetery, the post office and the cultural center (but the teams do not know that)

"Physically we are a threat, but cognitively maybe not as much", Kwame on why they need an express pass

At the cultural center Courtney & Adam run into Nancy & Mellisa. They decide to find the coin here together. Once inside they find a bunch of first nations people who start singing and dancing. Once they are done they hand over an express pass to Nancy & Mellisa (who did enter the center first).

One of the waypoints is at the post office. Here the clerk asks teams what their box number is. The trick is that there is a bunch of post boxes nearby, and they have small windows. Todd looks at them and sees an express pass in #286 so they ask for that and receive it.

"We're currently running around Dawson city like chickens with our heads cut off", Courtney Courtney & Adam decide it is a better idea to drive around to the waypoints instead of running. Then they almost get into a fight about who should use the GPS. But the fight fizzles

Dylan & Kwame arrive to the post office after Todd & Anna have picked up the express pass which was here. They waste a lot of time looking though all the boxes for an express they feel should be there.

Teams collect all five gold coins and make their way back to the bank in the following order:
1(+0) Todd & Anna, got an express pass
 2(+1) Courtney & Adam
3(+2) Nancy & Mellisa, got an express pass
4(+0) Leanne & Mar, got an express pass
 5(+1) Taylor & Courtney
 6(+1) Martina & Phil
 7(-5) Dylan & Kwame
 8(+1) Joseph & Akash
 9(-1) Zainab & Monica

The next clue is a detour:
Quote
DETOUR

Detour: "Chance" or
"Dance"

Chance: Become
blackjack dealers and
deal 2 hands each to
the satisfaction of the
Pit Boss to receive your
next clue.

Dance: Pull up your
petticoats and perform a
rousing Can-can routine
with the chorus line to
receive your next clue.

NOTE: There are limited
stations at both detours.

The dancing takes place at the historic Palace grand theater. The routine they have to learn is complicated and lasts 2-3 minutes. I.e. this is a hard detour.

The card dealing takes place at Diamond Tooth Gerties gambling hall. Teams must learn the rules of blackjack to be able to work as dealers. Both players must deal 2 hands each. There is only one table where teams may perform the task so there will be a line.

Contestants have to dress up for both detours.

"I did not expect to dance the Can-can in Dawson city today", Todd
"Fiddlers fart", Nancy gets the title when she failed a round of dealing

Adam considers himself a terrible dancer, but he attempts the task one time. When they fail miserably they decide to switch to the card dealing.
"How close was that", Adam asks the judge
"Not very close", The judge is honest

At this detour we learn that Mar has been dancing more or less professionally for 22 years. She thinks this detour is made for her. Leanne comes from competitive cheerleading background. She is a promotional cheerleader so she does not dance. And let us say that this shows.

For the latter teams in the gambling hall the mood is tense around the blackjack table. As there is only one table a single mistake will send you back to the end of the line.

On her second attempt at blackjack dealing Martina uses an old memorization technique. She uses a funny accept both when memorizing the rules mentally and she speaks it when doing the dealing. This seems to work for her as she gets it.

It seems the partner may not help the person doing the dealing while they are dealing.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
 1(+0) Todd & Anna, Blackjack
 2(+1) Nancy & Mellisa, blackjack
3(+2) Taylor & Courtney, dancing on their second attempt
4(+0) Leanne & Mar, dancing on their second attempt
 5(+2) Dylan & Kwame, blackjack
6(+0) Martina & Phil, looked at the dance but switched to blackjack
7(-5) Courtney & Adam, started dance but switched to blackjack
 8(+0) Joseph & Akash, blackjack
9(+0) Zainab & Monica, looked at the dance but switched to blackjack

We are not even shown Zainab & Monica finishing this task so we can assume they are quite a bit behind #8.

your next Pit Stop.

Warning!! The last team
to check in may be
eliminated.

"We wanted to win, but this is still the coolest thing I've ever done in my life", Monica on her way to the pit stop

Teams reach Jon at the pit stop (8km 13min) in the following order:
1(+0) Todd & Anna, win a trip to southern France and the $5000 bonus from the campsite challenge
 2(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 3(+0) Taylor & Courtney

ROUTE INFO

Fly to Salt Spring Island,
British Columbia.

Once there, search the
docks of Ganges
Harbour for your next
clue.

You have $620 for this
leg of the race.

Teams must first drive themselves to the Dawson City airport (17km 15min). Most teams do this without problems (There is kind of one big road out of town and it passes the airport), but not all.
"Are you sure this is the right way to the airport?", Joseph & Akash have trouble finding the airport

Teams are surprised when Zainab & Monica arrive at the airport and they realize that it was a non-elim.
"It's cool, we just have to beat them again", Mar

Teams fly from Dawson City via Whitehorse to Vancouver. Once they land in Vancouver they must make their way to Vancouver Harbour flight center where they can sign up for flights to Salt Spring Island the following morning. Teams end up on the following flights:

Sea plane 1 at 09:10:
 1. Joseph & Akash

Sea plane 2 at 09:25:
 2. Leanne & Mar
 3. Zainab & Monica

Sea plane 3 at 09:35:
 4. Courtney & Adam
 5. Taylor & Courtney

Sea plane 4 at 09:45:
 6. Todd & Anna
 7. Martina & Phil

Sea plane 5 at 09:55:
 8. Nancy & Mellisa
 9. Dylan & Kwame

The next day teams fly in their seaplanes to Salt Spring Island. They land in Ganges Harbour and the clue box is easy to find.

This is also where Zainab & Monica find their speed bump. They must taste 8 different kinds of flavored salt and then match the correct label to each jar. There are two extra labels, but the task still seems fairly easy because they are done before the next plane lands.

Open your pie hole!

Eat two blueberry pies at
the Salt Spring Saturday
Market to earn the keys
to your 2018 Chevrolet
Bolt EV, where you will
find your next clue.

Teams must now find the marked pie stand where they will get the blueberry pies they have to eat.
"I thought I was going to eat this in 5 seconds but it is taking slightly longer than that", Joseph
"These are not little pies, these are something that you serve to your entire family at thanksgiving dinner", Leanne

"Do you guys like pie?", Leanne asks Joseph & Akash when she arrives
"I would have given you a different answer five minutes ago", Joseph

The pie eating turns out to be much more difficult than teams expected. So hard that two teams sacrifice their express passes to get out of the task.

"I don't like pie and I don't like blueberries", Todd

Fortunately there are buckets available to the racers, and after a while they start to see frequent use.
"Sounds like a wild boar", Zainab gets the title as she hears Martina use the bucket

Nancy & Mellisa almost uses their express pass but end up not so they are the only ones left with an express pass after this task.

Teams get their car keys in the following order:
 1(+0) Joseph & Akash
2(+4) Todd & Anna, used their express pass
3(-1) Leanne & Mar, used their express pass
 4(+0) Courtney & Adam
 5(+2) Martina & Phil
 6(-1) Taylor & Courtney
 7(-4) Zainab & Monica
 8(+1) Dylan & Kwame
 9(-1) Nancy & Mellisa

The next clue is waiting inside the car.

Drive yourselves to
Mount Erskine Provincial
Park and search the
evergreens for a fairy
door with your next clue
inside.

At the park (4.6km 9min) there are ten small fairy-doors, three of the doors have clues behind them. The extra info for the racers state that all doors can be found within 20 feet of the trail and they are visible from the trail.

Todd & Anna arrive moments after Joseph & Akash so the two teams decide to work together.

Nancy & Mellisa arrive after all other teams have left. They freak out and use their express pass.

Teams get their clues here in the following order:
 1(+0) Joseph & Akash
 2(+0) Todd & Anna
 3(+0) Leanne & Mar
 4(+2) Taylor & Courtney
 5(+0) Martina & Phil
 6(-2) Courtney & Adam
 7(+1) Dylan & Kwame
 8(-1) Zainab & Monica
9(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, used their express pass

ROAD BLOCK

Who's good with
numbers?

Teams must now drive themselves to Vesuvius bay (8km 12min) and catch a ferry to Crofton on Vancouver Island. Note that Crofton is only about 1h drive away from Hatley castle where this season started.

There turns out to be a long line of cars at the ferry terminal and Joseph & Akash almost get on the next ferry, which would have been a big deal since there is an hour between the ferries. But just as they are about to board they get a red light, the ferry is full. In the end all teams end up on the same ferry.

Once in Crofton teams must drive themselves to Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit (17km 17min).

Teams arrive to the racing track in the following order:
 1(+1) Todd & Anna
 2(+2) Taylor & Courtney
 3(+3) Courtney & Adam
 4(-1) Leanne & Mar
 5(-4) Joseph & Akash
 6(-1) Martina & Phil
 7(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 8(+0) Zainab & Monica
 9(+0) Nancy & Mellisa

In this road block one team member get behind the wheel of a sporty Corvette. They must then complete a lap of the circuit in under 3 minutes without exceeding 80km/h.

"I love cars, I name all my dogs after cars", Martina

It is raining pretty hard so I wonder if the planned task was a little bit different.

"It is not easy being in this powerhouse of a car and having to go only 80 km/h", Nancy

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Todd* & Anna      (2-1)
2(+0)Taylor & Courtney*(1-2)
3(+1)Leanne* & Mar     (2-1)
4(+1)Joseph* & Akash   (2-1)
5(+1)Martina & Phil*   (1-2)
6(+1)Dylan & Kwame*    (1-2)
7(+1)Zainab* & Monica  (2-1)
8(+1)Nancy* & Mellisa  (2-1)
9(-6)Courtney* & Adam  (2-1)On her 2nd attempt as she drove too fast in her 1st

In this road block teams must learn to tie a one-handed falconers knot from a silent demonstration (one handed since the other hand is busy holding the bird). When ready the player will get a live raptor on their glove and they will have 15s to tie the knot using the leash of the bird.

"He just flips his thumb and suddenly there's a knot there, it's like a magic trick", Anna has a hard time following the demonstration
"Holy smokes, you do something with your thumb there", Taylor

Teams talk to the guy doing the demonstration and learn that he is not allowed to go any slower.

"Holy smokes, this is a pretty big bird", Taylor when doing his first attempt

Mar seems to get the knot relatively quickly and then she helps Anna on the condition that Anna lets her go first. Which Anna does.
"I think Mar saw the panic on my face and just decide to be nice to me, which makes me emotional since she is so sweet", Anna
"I did it in 17 seconds", Mar on her 1st attempt

"This is not like any navy knot I've ever tied. This is a bird knot", Monica
"Yeah, I did it. I just don't know how I did it", Dylan while practicing the knot

"I believe in you, you believe in me, let's do this know together", Martina talks to her bird

Mellisa knows this knot since it is the same she uses every day to tie her horses to the trailer. So she is filled with confidence, even though she has to do the knot with one hand. After some practice she is tying this knot over and over again under the time limit. After 21 attempts she realizes that she is tying the wrong knot.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+1)Taylor* & Courtney(2-2)On his 5th attempt
2(+1)Leanne & Mar*     (2-2)On her 4th attempt
3(-2)Todd & Anna*      (2-2)On her 4th attempt
4(+1)Martina* & Phil   (2-2)On her 5th attempt
5(+4)Courtney & Adam*  (2-2)On his 1st attempt
6(+0)Dylan* & Kwame    (2-2)On his 2nd attempt
7(+2)Nancy & Mellisa*  (2-2)On her 27th attempt
8(-1)Zainab & Monica*  (2-2)On her 8th attempt
9(-5)Joseph & Akash*   (2-2)On his 10th attempt

The next clue is a small scroll of the type which may have been tied to the foot of a bird.

Drive yourselves to the Kinsol Trestle and search for Jon
at your next Pit Stop.

Warning!! The last team to check in may be eliminated.

There are a few attempts at footraces at the pit stop (31km 34min) since the actual bridge is 300m from the parking lot.

Teams check in the following order:
1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, win a trip to Boston
 2(+1) Todd & Anna, lost a footrace
 3(-1) Leanne & Mar
 4(+0) Martina & Phil
 5(+1) Dylan & Kwame
 6(-1) Courtney & Adam
 7(+1) Zainab & Monica
 8(-1) Nancy & Mellisa, just after #7
9(+0) Joseph & Akash, are eliminated

"Yelling my name doesn't make the mat any closer, but I like to hear it", Jon to Martina

"To be among some of Canada's finest heroes has been an absolute honor for us", Akash

This is wrong:

“Note that Crofton is the ferry terminal they departed from in the first leg.”

The first episode has them departing from Swartz Bay, an hour and a half drive from Crofton.

Film date: 2018-04-30 - 2018-05-02

The last pit stop was on the Kinsol Trestle, Vancouver Island BC. Teams are released from the nearby city of Duncan after what seems to have been a long pit stop. They are released in the following order:

3.Leanne & Mar     03:33+0:19

ROUTE INFO

Fly to Jakarta,
Indonesia... the Emerald
of the Equator.

Once there, find the
dancing Ondel-Ondel in
Fatahillah Square who
will give you your next
clue.

You have $500 CAD for
this leg of the Race.

Caution: Double U-Turn
ahead!

Teams drive themselves from Duncan to Victoria Airport (79km 1h10min) and then fly from there via Vancouver and Tokyo to Jakarta. This flight is long and since they cross the international date-line they loose a day so they probably arrive to Jakarta late in the evening on the 1st of May.

When teams land there is the customary mad dash through the airport to the taxis and on to Fatahillah Square.

"Go, yes, go, yes, go", Nancy to their taxi driver
"I think you're scaring him", Mellisa has to calm her down

At the square (25km) teams find a sign and a sign-up board. The sign says that the Ondel Ondel performance begins at 8:00 am. Dylan & Kwame arrive first but Kwame does not want to put their name on top since the other male-male teams who got first on sign-up boards got eliminated in the same leg (Chewie & Happy in leg #1 and Joseph & Akash in leg 3).

Performance 1:
 1. Dylan & Kwame
 2. Leanne & Mar

Performance 2:
 3. Todd & Anna
 4. Courtney & Adam
 5. Zainab & Monica

Performance 3:
 6. Martina & Phil
 7. Nancy & Mellisa
 8. Taylor & Courtney

The next morning they get to see the Ondel-Ondel dance. This is a traditional Indonesian Welcome dance and is performed by two dancers in giant costumes. Teams also get to take part in the dance and once it is done they are given their next clue.

Route info: "Make your way to Jakarta's old port, Pelabuhan Sunda Kelapa."

Dylan & Kwame have trouble communicating with their taxi driver. After a while they spot Todd & Anna, who are having the same problem.
"We figure, lets stick with them they usually end up on top", Dylan
But that is not the case this time.
 "We are super lost", Dylan
"Why did we sign up first?", Kwame feel the curse is upon them

Physically they are not very far from the real location, but they are on the other side of the port channel so they eventually jump into taxis and make their way to the right place.

Teams reach the clue box at the port (3.5km) in the following order:
 1(+1) Leanne & Mar
 2(+2) Courtney & Adam
 3(+4) Nancy & Mellisa
 4(+1) Zainab & Monica
 5(+3) Taylor & Courtney
 6(+0) Martina & Phil
 7(-6) Dylan & Kwame
 8(-5) Todd & Anna

Here teams must transport Durian fruits from a truck on land over a narrow plank and fill a bin on a boat. There are two planks, one for each direction.

The Durian fruits are really prickly and hurts so it is hard to carry many in one go. A lot of racers start using their shirts.

"We do not want to fall into this water", Leanne & Mar
"They are sharp and pointy and they hurt", Courtney (nurse) describe the Durian

The trailing two teams are not too far behind since Martin & Phil are still doing this task when they arrive.

Teams complete this task in the following order:
 1(+0) Leanne & Mar
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 4(+0) Zainab & Monica
 5(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 6(+0) Martina & Phil
 7(+1) Todd & Anna
 8(-1) Dylan & Kwame

The next route info directs teams to the Pasar Burung Barito, bird market. Where they will find a blind double U-turn.

Teams reach the U-turn board (12km) in the following order:
 1(+0) Leanne & Mar
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, U-turns Martina & Phil
 4(+0) Zainab & Monica, U-turns Todd & Anna
 5(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 6(+1) Todd & Anna
7(+1) Dylan & Kwame, see Todd & Anna at the board
 8(-2) Martina & Phil

"There is no need to put that target on our back", Leanne on why they did not U-turn
"We just want to slow down another team so as to secure us a spot on the next leg", Nancy want a bit of a cushion
"Classic line, we're not here to make friends. We need to win. We need to get rid of the strong teams", Zainab

DETOUR

Detour: "Ular" or
"Kebaya"

Ular: Help a snake
handler treat his
serpents to a bath, then
get a treatment of your
own to receive your
next clue.

Kebaya: Join the
garment makers of
Pasar Mayestik and put
the finishing touches on
two kebayas to receive
your next clue.

In Ular team make their way to Langsat Park (14km) where they must choose a crate and the wash and dry the snake inside. Some snakes are bigger than others but there is no way to tell before choosing the crate. I am sure this task is made easier by the T-shirts the handlers wear "My pet can eat your pet".

The clue does not seem to mention that the "treatment" players get afterwards consists of them attaching leeches to each other for 5 minutes. The leeches are kept in jars and each jar has a player name on it so they should not exchange leeches between each other.

Kebaya takes place in Pasat Mayestik, about 1km from the Ular detour location. In this massive textile bazaar teams must search for a marked sewing stall. Here they must use the provided machine to sew two panels which they must the sew to the inside of the lapels of two traditional women's blazers.

"I used to have a dog, this is not the same as washing your dog", Mar while washing the snake
"I'm a little bit scared of snakes I guess", Courtney (nurse) as she tries to handle the snake
"I can't, I can not, nope, you pick that up", Courtney (police) upon opening their crate

"I hate leaches", Mar is not fond of the treatment
"I can't get yours to stick", Leanne has trouble attaching a leach to Mar

"I'm a high-school home economics teacher. I've taught textiles in the past", Martina feels confident about the sewing

The two U-turned teams, Todd & Anna and Martina & Phil, select different detours as their first. And it seems to take the similar amounts of time to do the first detour as they pass each other running between them. Both teams feel the pressure when this happens.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
 1(+2) Nancy & Mellisa, Ular
 2(-1) Leanne & Mar, Ular
 3(-1) Courtney & Adam, Ular
 4(+0) Zainab & Monica, Ular
 5(+0) Taylor & Courtney, Ular
 6(+1) Dylan & Kwame, Ular
  Todd & Anna, Ular
  Martina & Phil, Kebaya
 7(+1) Martina & Phil, Ular
 8(-1) Todd & Anna, Kebaya

ROAD BLOCK

Master one of
Indonesia's most popular
dances, the Saman, or
dance of a thousand
hands. Then join the
dance troupe for a
performance to receive
your next clue.

This dance is performed by a group of dancers sitting on their knees in along line. It mostly consists of fast rhythmic hand motions and seems to be fairly difficult to master.

Teams are given individual instructors, but there is only one stage so they have to wait in line to perform the dance. Production has also invited a number of locals to act as an audience so there are lots of hand clapping or boos depending on how well the racers are doing.

"Mal would have been the perfect one to do it because she can dance. I was expecting to build something", Nancy
"Wow, this is extremely difficult", Adam upon seeing the dance
 "Lots of hand movements", Leanne
"I did karate as a kid and this is similar. It's just memorizing movements", Dylan

Eventually the first five teams have left and Adam is the only person left doing the task when the last two teams arrive. The pressure is on.
"I'm really battling with that whole tempo thing. I'm not a dancer and I don't hold a beat very well", Adam
"I love to dance", Phil is happy

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+2)Leanne* & Mar     (3-2)On her 5th attempt
2(-1)Nancy* & Mellisa  (3-2)On her 6th attempt

Make your way to
MONAS and search for
Jon at your next Pit
Stop.

Warning! The last team
to check in may be
eliminated.

MONA is a big monument standing on Merdeka Square. This is well known so every taxi driver know where it is.

Having seen a few race seasons prior to this I am kind of jaded and know that the editing often tries to portrait teams as being closer than they really are. But here we actually get to see the last two teams in the same frame as Todd & Anna spot a taxi outside the theater only to see Courtney & Adam get into it. So we know they are not far behind.

Teams reach the pit stop (3km) in the following order:
1(+0) Leanne & Mar, win a trip to Ho-Chi-Minh city
2(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, not long after #1
 3(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 4(+1) Zainab & Monica
 5(-1) Taylor & Courtney
 6(+0) Martina & Phil
 7(+0) Courtney & Adam
8(+0) Todd & Anna, are eliminated

"You want to win so to go out now in the fourth leg is a bummer", Todd

Fly back home to
Canada.

Find your next clue in the
all new 2018 Chevrolet
Equinox True North
Edition when you arrive.

You have $550 for this
leg of the race.

At the airport teams learn that Todd & Anna got eliminated in the last leg.
"It scares me seeing top competitors go home, it can happen to anyone", Leanne realize anybody can be eliminated

Teams fly to Toronto via Tokyo. The flight takes about 20 hours but since they cross the international date line they land the same day as they started.

Route info: "Drive this Chevrolet Equinox to where it was assembled in Canada."

Teams must now figure out that their car was assembled at Cami Automotive Assembly in Ingersoll, ON. Then they must drive there and find the sign-up board. This is harder than it looks as there are two other Chevrolet plants near Toronto.

Most teams find people with smartphones at the airport and use these to search for the plant. Four of the teams get bad info and decide to head to Oshawa instead. They are:
  Leanne & Mar
  Courtney & Adam
  Zainab & Monica
  Nancy & Mellisa

Oshawa is 84 km east of Toronto while Ingersoll is to the west..
"I am very confused", Mar can't find the sign up board at the Oshawa plant
Eventually all the lost teams check the net again and realize they are in the wrong location.

Fortunately for the teams going the wrong direction the Ingersoll plant does not open until 09:00 the next morning so they have plenty of time to get there.

At the Ingersoll assembly plant (141km, 270km via Oshawa) teams find the sign up board in the following order:
 1. Taylor & Courtney
 2. Dylan & Kwame
 3. Martina & Phil
 4. Courtney & Adam, 2 hours after the first three teams
 5. Nancy & Mellisa
 6. Leanne & Mar
 7. Zainab & Monica

The next morning teams will be let into the plant in the order they signed up in 5 minutes intervals. Once inside they find their next clue:
Quote
ROUTE INFO

It's time to door-to-
door!

Hit the factory floor and
complete the standard
training exercise of
assembling and
disassembling a
Chevrolet Equinox front
door to receive your next
clue.

Note that the clue say they must assemble and disassemble the door. The instructions they have to follow also lists both build and teardown steps. But Jon only talks about assembling and that is all that is shown. And it seems as if once their assembly is approved they may go to see the plant manager to get their next clue.

Teams can watch a silent demonstration of the process and follow a set of instructions (containing 19 steps). The instructions are not quite self explaining, For example one step is to "Get B-Pillar Applique", and the next step is to "Install the B-Pillar applique".

Martina see this just like a food recipe:
"You can't go from step 1 to step 5 to step 12 to make your Key Lime pie. You gotta whip that cream", Martina gets the title

There seems to be a couple of gotchas in this task. You have to remember to plug in the rear view mirror electric contact, and you have to attach certain parts with the right side up.

Nancy & Mellisa debates about the orientation. Mellisa think the black and silver colors are significant but Nancy just think the silver is due to wear and tear. Nancy overrides Mellisa but as they walk away we get a shot of the judge shaking her head. I.e. Mellisa is right.

"I have no idea what the problem is at this point", Courtney (police) after their door has been rejected again

Teams complete this task in the following order:
 1(+1) Dylan & Kwame
 2(+2) Courtney & Adam
 3(+0) Martina & Phil
 4(-3) Taylor & Courtney
 5(+1) Leanne & Mar
 6(-1) Nancy & Mellisa
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica

ROAD BLOCK

Who wants a fighting
chance?

In this road block contestants must suit up in period costumes and pick an instructor to teach them an intricate and technical stage sword fight sequence.

Phil tries to take safe route and performs the routine really slow. But the judge complains that it was too slow.

Courtney (nurse) does alright, but laughs as she is dying so the judge tells her to take it a bit more seriously.

"I did stage combat in university", Mar feel this task is for her
Mar is good at this. But she is also a perfectionist so she keep practicing and practicing. Eventually they are the last team left and only then will she make an attempt before the judge. Once shes goes up she is way better than all the others, which probably means she spent way too much time practicing.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Martina & Phil*   (2-4)On his 5th attempt
2(+0)Courtney* & Adam  (3-3)On her 3rd attempt
3(+0)Taylor & Courtney*(3-3)On her 2nd attempt
4(+1)Nancy & Mellisa*  (3-3)On her 2nd attempt
5(-1)Dylan & Kwame*    (3-3)On his 2nd attempt
6(+0)Zainab* & Monica  (3-3)On her 3rd attempt
7(+0)Leanne & Mar*     (3-3)On her 1st attempt

Detour: "Paddle or package"

In Package teams must make their way to Rhéo Thompson candies (4min 1.3km). Here they must package 10 boxes of assorted mint smoothies and 10 boxes of assorted fruit jellies.

In paddle teams must make their way to the Avon boat rentals (4min 1.3km). Here they must use a paddle boat to collect six emoji puzzle pieces. The puzzle pieces
depict:
 * a queen
 * a bird (dove)
 * -D
 * a teapot
 * +HE
 * A green square
When the pieces are combined correctly teams should read "Queen of the square".

Dylan & Kwame are not having a great day on the river. First they knock over the sign holding one of the puzzle pieces. Then they get passed by Nancy & Mellisa.
"Aww man, we suck right now", Dylan as the girls pass them

It turns out that Adam is good at figuring out how to package the candies. There is a special tray which can be used to neatly insert them into the box. But when they ask for an inspection there is a glaring error. They have forgotten a sticker on one of the boxes.

"Queen blueberry tea?", Nancy & Mellisa tries to solve the puzzle

Dylan & Kwame also have a hard time with the puzzle. They find a local who points out that the bird can not be a dove because it is not the right shape. But he knows there is a queen street in town. While looking they spot Nancy & Mellisa and decide to follow them.
"They're leeches", Mellisa about the boys following them

Nancy & Mellisa goes into the tourist information office to ask for help. This happens to be right across the street from where they need to be. Meanwhile Dylan & Kwame are wandering the street as they did not see where the girls went. But they are in luck as some locals tell them that the other teams went inside and points to city hall.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
 1(+2) Taylor & Courtney, paddle
 2(-1) Martina & Phil, package
 3(-1) Courtney & Adam, package
 4(+1) Dylan & Kwame, paddle
 5(-1) Nancy & Mellisa, paddle
 6(+1) Leanne & Mar, paddle
 7(-1) Zainab & Monica, package

Teams doing the package detour get a slip of paper reading "Queen of the square" while the paddle boat teams have to solve a puzzle to get to the same answer. Then they all have to ask locals to learn that Queen of the square is the name of the local city hall.

Teams reach city hall in the following order:
1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, immediately realize they are missing their packs
 2(+0) Martina & Phil
 3(+0) Courtney & Adam
 4(+0) Dylan & Kwame
5(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, realize they are missing their bags before Jon tells them
 6(+0) Leanne & Mar
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica

In here they see Jon at the mat. As they had no warning that this was going to happen no team have their packs with them (they have left them in their cars) so they all have to go back and fetch them.
"[i[You guys feel a little light?[/i]", Jon to Dylan & Kwame as the miss their packs

Eventually teams check in, with their packs, in the following order:
1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, win a trip to London
 2(+1) Courtney & Adam
 3(-1) Martina & Phil
 4(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 5(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 6(+0) Leanne & Mar
7(+0) Zainab & Monica, are saved by a keep on racing

This leg turns out to be a keep on racing leg so teams are given their next clue by Jon.
"Rip'n'read, you've got more to do", Jon

The next clue tells teams to drive to Toronto.

ROUTE INFO

Make your way to
Canada's largest city,
Toronto, Ontario!

From the observation
deck of City Hall, search
the for the location of
your next clue.

...

The clue also warns that there is a double U-turn ahead.

Taylor & Courtney are happy to keep on racing since it means they get to keep their lead.

Nancy & Mellisa discuss the U-turn in the car
"My heart is saying don't but my head is saying absolutely", Nancy

Zainab & Monica hope that some of the other teams U-turns each other so that they can catch up.

Teams arrive to City Hall in Toronto (150km 1h55min) in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+1) Martina & Phil
 3(+2) Nancy & Mellisa
4(+0) Dylan & Kwame, just as the previous team is leaving
 5(+1) Leanne & Mar
 6(-4) Courtney & Adam
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica

At City Hall teams must leave their cars and make their way to a hidden observation deck on the 27th floor. The next clue is a big red and yellow flag on top of a nearby building. This is not hard to spot if you look out the right opening. But it is not trivial to find since most of the observation deck faces in the other direction.

Teams spot the flag here in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Martina & Phil
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 4(+1) Leanne & Mar
 5(-1) Dylan & Kwame
 6(+0) Courtney & Adam
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica

The flag is located by Younge-Dundas Square and the racers must make their way there.

Zainab & Monica seem to be the only ones having any issues here. They search inside the building where the flag was instead of down on the square.

They find the clue box at the Younge-Dundas Square (650m) in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Martina & Phil
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 4(+0) Leanne & Mar
 5(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 6(+0) Courtney & Adam
7(+0) Zainab & Monica, after all the other teams have left

In this road block racers must first pack a number of unwieldy items into a Chevrolet Spark. Nothing may be packed in the front seat and there must be an unobstructed sight-line through the rear view mirror. Once that has been approved they can run over to one of two other cars which they must back through a course and park in a designated spot without hitting any of the markers.

"I'm not gonna lie, my mom helped me pack my bag before I left for the race", Taylor
"I'm a minimalist, I don't even own this much stuff", Mellisa

"Calm it down, slow is fast", Courtney tries to coach Adam
"Slamming's fast", Adam has a different opinion

Mar get her packing rejected a number of times. Eventually she reread her clue and realize that nothing may be placed in the front seat.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Taylor* & Courtney(4-3)On his 3rd attempt at backing up
2(+0)Martina* & Phil   (3-4)On her first shown attempt at backing up
3(+0)Nancy* & Mellisa  (4-3)
4(+1)Dylan & Kwame*    (4-3)
5(+1)Courtney & Adam*  (3-4)
6(-2)Leanne & Mar*     (3-4)
7(+0)Zainab & Monica*  (3-4)

Once done teams can call OnStar and get their next clue verbally: "You need to make your way to the Monkey's paw by TTC and search for your next clue. Caution, there is a double U-turn ahead".

Teams must now use public transport to get to the Monkey's Paw bookstore. This takes about 23 minutes).

As they exit the subway Dylan & Kwame spot Nancy & Mellisa, who apparently were on the same train. They boys run past them.
"Those twerps, they've just been leeches this whole race", Nancy
The race has been trying for some episodes to build a rivalry between these two teams. It is probably the closest thing to conflict they have and it is not that much.

Later on they are all running along the street. Dylan is first and then Nancy hot on his heels. They both run past the bookshop but Nancy sees Kwame run into it and she is closer than Dylan so the girls reach the marker first.

In this bookstore teams will find the double U-turn. They reach it in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Martina & Phil
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, just before #4
 4(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 5(+1) Leanne & Mar, just before #6
 6(-1) Courtney & Adam, U-turns Zainab & Monica
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica

"We are not going to U-turn anybody because we've been U-turned and it sucked", Phil

Courtney & Adam wrestle with the U-turn. They do not want to use it, but realize they need the buffer if offers.

After the U-turn teams can insert a token into the bibliomat, a vending machine giving out random books. But these books have a clue envelope tucked into them.

DETOUR

Detour: "Walk the Part"
or "Latte Art"

Walk the Part: Join a
troupe of voguers and
express yourself to the
vogue instructor's
...

In latte art teams must make their way to Versus coffee (7.3km 20min). Here they must make two cups of latte art. A Coffee latte where they have added food coloring to the milk and pour it to create a nice pattern.

In walk the part teams must make their way to El Convento Rico (2.5km 8min). Here they must dress up and learn a Voguing routine. Once they have performed the dance to the satisfaction of the live audience they will get their next clue.

"Smellas like swat and fun", Dylan gets the titla has he enters the nightclub

The mood at the dance gets a little chilly when Zainab & Monica walk in before Courtney & Adam are done.
"We don't feel very warm with them right now", Zainab about Courtney & Adam

"I know the steps, I just can't do them", Adam is frustrated

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, dance
 2(+3) Leanne & Mar, dance
3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, dance on their 3rd attempt
 4(-2) Martina & Phil, latte
5(-1) Dylan & Kwame, dance on their 3rd attempt
6(+0) Courtney & Adam, dance on their 1st attempt
 - Zainab & Monica, dance on their 1st attempt
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica, latte

The next clue is a route info which send teams to the North York Harvest Food Bank.

"What have we done?", Adam when they arrive at the dance task

Teams arrive at the food bank (9.1km 23min from dance and 18km 24min from coffee) in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Leanne & Mar
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
4(+0) Martina & Phil, as the two previous teams are doing the challenge
5(+1) Courtney & Adam, as two other teams are doing the task
6(-1) Dylan & Kwame, went to the wrong location and there is only one team left when they arrive
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica

At the food bank teams must pack bread. They must first select an order form where each form contains about 11 lines like "Dempster's White Bread - 16". Which means 16 packages of Dempsters white bread. It seems each form list the exact same items but the number of packages of each differs slightly.

Teams must follow a marked path to find the truck holding the bread and then bring it and pack the requested amounts into red boxes.

Leanne & Mar misread the instructions and think that when it says 15 packages it means 15 boxes. They soon realize there will not be enough boxes for every team. They go and ask Nancy and Mellisa how they are counting and realize their mistake. They now have to unpack a number of boxes they have already packed.

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, before the next team even arrives
 2(+1) Nancy & Mellisa
 3(+1) Martina & Phil
 4(-2) Leanne & Mar
 5(+1) Dylan & Kwame
 6(-1) Courtney & Adam
 7(+0) Zainab & Monica

ROUTE INFO

Make your way to the
waterfront near Ireland Park
and find Jon at your next Pit
Stop.

Warning!! The last team to
check in may be eliminated.

At the mat Jon is waiting together with Sam & Paul, who won the last season. Teams reach him (12km 30min) in the following order:
1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, win a trip to Hong Kong
 2(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 3(+0) Martina & Phil
 4(+0) Leanne & Mar, just after #3
 5(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 6(+0) Courtney & Adam, just after #5
7(+0) Zainab & Monica, are eliminated

As a bonus Dempsters is giving $5000 worth of products to a food bank in the winners, that is Taylor & Courtney's, community.

"You're real", Martina recognizes Sam & Paul as she runs up to the mat

Zainab & Monica never really had a chance in this leg. They never caught up and It feels as if the U-turn was just the final nail in the coffin.
"This race has taught me, when you feel like you are at your lowest, you gotta smile. You gotta enjoy the moment", Monica

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 7, "Poodle Time"
Film date: 2018-05-08 - 2018-05-09

The last pit stop was at Ireland Park in Toronto, ON. Teams are released the following afternoon from the nearby Coronation park in the following order:
1.Taylor & Courtney16:42
2.Nancy & Mellisa  17:43+1:01
3.Martina & Phil   17:58+1:16
4.Leanne & Mar     18:00+1:18
?.Dylan & Kwame    ??:??+?:??
?.Courtney & Adam  ??:??+?:??

Route info: "Fly to Winnipeg, MB"

There are two flights and only three teams may travel on the first flight. So there is now a race to the airport counter. All teams try to find taxis.

Teams reach it in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, 1st flight
 2(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, 1st flight
 3(+1) Leanne & Mar, 1st flight
 4(-1) Martina & Phil
 ?(+?) Courtney & Adam
 ?(+?) Dylan & Kwame

When teams land they must pick up a sponsor car and drive themselves to the Canadian museum for human rights.

Teams arrive at the museum in the following order:
 1. Leanne & Mar
 2. Taylor & Courtney
 3. Nancy & Mellisa
 4. Martina & Phil
 ?. Courtney & Adam
 ?. Dylan & Kwame

Here each team will find a board with 19 quotes from prominent human rights activists. They also have 19 author cards which they must match to the quotes. The racers will have to search the museum (11 galleries spread over 6 floors) to locate white plaques containing these quotes.

The strategy seems to be to run out into the museum and look for plaques, memorize the quotes (there are two on every plaque) and then run back to your board. Nancy & Mellisa try to  pick up key words and Leanne & Mar focus on the last few words of the quote. The key part seem to be how many quotes you can remember before you have to run back to your board.

"It's too bad we are running through this museum because it looks really interesting", Courtney (police)

Nancy & Mellisa have done 12 of the 19 quotes when the teams from the second flight arrive. And when Martina & Phil leave they get really frantic. They realize that working together with another team may be a good idea. Separately it seems as if Adam & Courtney have reached the same conclusion. So they start comparing their boards and it seems as if together they had all the names. This seems to have been a really good idea.

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
 1(+0) Leanne & Mar
 2(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 3(+1) Martina & Phil
 4(+?) Courtney & Adam
 5(-2) Nancy & Mellisa, just after #4
 6(+?) Dylan & Kwame

In tights teams must make their way to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (1.4km 5min).

In bites teams travel to the Skip The Dishes delivery logistics center (1.2km 4min). Here they will pick up a smartphone with the courier app which tells them where to go.

In a separate interview we learn that the "customers" were actually Skip the Dishes employees and the route was calculated to take about 40 minutes to drive.

One of the customers is having her birthday so the app tells teams they should sing to her. In reality it was not her birthday and she did not know that they would sing for her. Hence her astonished expression when the first team starts to sing.

"Ballet is tough and I'm not flexible", Taylor has an opinion on which detour to take
"Dance, dance, dance", But Courtney uses a superhuman debating technique (and they go dancing)

Adam & Courtney get a parking ticket while they are in the Skip the Dishes HQ. But they luck out because the fine is $0.

"They are picking up this challenge alarmingly fast", Courtney (police) about Nancy & Mellisa who are learning the dance

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
1(+0) Leanne & Mar, dance on their 1st attempt
2(+0) Taylor & Courtney, dance on their 1st attempt
3(+2) Nancy & Mellisa, dance on their 3rd attempt

FACE OFF

It's time for a Face Off!

Drive yourselves to the

ROAD BLOCK

Who wants to have a
ball?

In this road block racers must learn and perform the classic cup and ball trick. Once that is done they must make a balloon poodle for a member of the audience. They have to complete both parts of this road block in one go. That is if they fail building the animal they must restart with the magic trick.

"I have newer performed a magic trick in my life", Leanne

It seems as if the difficult part here is making the the balloon animal. Not that teams do not fail to screw up the trick as well but the balloon is tricky.

"Noo, it's to windy for my balls", Martina

The wind is indeed picking up so they move the performing inside instead.

"Poodle time", Dylan gets the quote on his 15th attempt

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Taylor & Courtney*(4-4)On her 1st attempt
2(+1)Martina* & Phil   (4-4)On her 4th attempt
3(-1)Leanne* & Mar     (4-4)On her 5th attempt
4(+0)Dylan* & Kwame    (5-3)On his 15th attempt

1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, win a trip to New York
 2(+0) Martina & Phil
 3(+0) Leanne & Mar

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 8, "The Zombies are honing in on us"
Film date: 2018-05-10 - 2018-05-11

The last pit stop was in the Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens, Winnipeg. Teams are released from the corner of Portage avenue and Main st the next day in the following order:
1.Taylor & Courtney09:41
2.Martina & Phil   10:22+0:41
3.Leanne & Mar     10:40+0:59
4.Dylan & Kwame    11:40+1:59
5.Courtney & Adam  11:54+2:13
6.Nancy & Mellisa  12:07+2:26

The first clue tells teams to fly to Prince Edward Island.

At the airport we learn that Taylor & Courtney made an alliance with Martina & Phil back in the first leg. The teams are also surprised when Nancy & Mellisa turn up after their non-elimination.

"Nancy & Mellisa are super nice. I like to chat with them. I don't like to race with them, because they're good at it", Courtney (police) is not happy it was a non-elimination

Teams fly via Toronto to Charlottetown. At the airport teams collect their sponsor car and make their way to the Beaconsfield Historic House.

Teams find the clue box by the Beaconsfield Historic House (7.4km 17min) in the following order:
 1. Leanne & Mar, right in front of #2
 2. Dylan & Kwame
 3. Taylor & Courtney
 4. Martina & Phil
 5. Nancy & Mellisa
 6. Courtney & Adam

Here Nancy & Mellisa find their speed bump. They must make their way to the Humble Barber (600m). There they will find two persons waiting to donate their long hair to the Canadian Cancer association. The task is to collect the hair.

This speed bump turns very emotional when we learn that Nancy was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, and her mom died of the same disease.

The other teams can grab the next clue from the box.

Route info: "Have a mice day"

In this task teams must search Charlottetown for statues of Eckhart the mouse. There are 9 statues and three of them hold part of the next clue. Each team must find all three pieces to continue racing.

The statues are quite small, but well known. And there are maps which have all the locations marked.

"Think before we run", Dylan & Kwame have a motto

Courtney & Adam and Nancy & Mellisa are smart and go into a hotel to get a map of the mouse locations.

"I wish I lived here because these people or my kind of people, they are good hearted, they're willing to help", Adam find the locals helpful
"This challenge is kicking my ass", Courtney (police) has trouble finding the last mouse

Taylor & Courtney run into Martina & Phil and get told where mouse holding the final clue piece can be found.

Teams get all pieces in the following order:
 1(+0) Leanne & Mar
 2(+4) Courtney & Adam
 3(+2) Nancy & Mellisa
 4(+0) Martina & Phil
 5(-2) Taylor & Courtney
 6(-4) Dylan & Kwame

The three clue pieces read:
* Search for your next clue near the corner of Route 6...
* and Grahams Road, but first...
* say goodbye to Charlottetown!

At the indicated corner (48km 47min) teams find an old church which has been converted into a restaurant called The Table. Teams arrive here in the following order:
 1(+1) Courtney & Adam
 2(+1) Nancy & Mellisa
 3(-2) Leanne & Mar
 4(+0) Martina & Phil
 5(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 6(+0) Dylan & Kwame

Road block: "Who has a way with words?"

In this challenge each racer will be handed an individual menu of a four course meal. The problem is that all words are scrambled. For example it says ODFESAO instead of SEAFOOD. Racers must unscramble each dish, say the name to the chef and the serve it to one of the waiting guests.

As Taylor is done he sits down quickly with Paul, his fresh eyes soon spots that GREBECURESHE should be CHEESEBURGER.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Courtney* & Adam  (4-5)
2(+0)Nancy* & Mellisa  (5-4)
3(+2)Taylor* & Courtney(5-4)
4(+0)Martina & Phil*   (4-5)
5(-2)Leanne & Mar*     (4-5)
6(+0)Dylan & Kwame*    (5-4)

Suds take place at the Great Canadian Soap co (29km 24min).

Spuds takes place at Blue Bay Farms (22km 19min). Teams must till the soil, cut the potatoes and plant the pieces 4-5 inches apart.

All teams select the potato planting. And they all discover that it is hard work.
"Physical labor is my jam", Adam
"Farming is not for the faint of heart", Courtney (police)

At the potato planting we see a small flight between Nancy & Mellisa. Nancy thinks she knows how to plant potatoes and does not want to check the clue.
"Tell me what to do because that is what you like to do", Mellisa to Nancy

"Where did you get your potatoes", Martina fails to spot the mountain of potatoes in the back of the barn

The only team having any problem with this task is Dylan & Kwame who get rejected in the first check because they have placed their potatoes to close.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
 1(+1) Nancy & Mellisa, potatoes
 2(-1) Courtney & Adam, potatoes
 3(+0) Taylor & Courtney, potatoes
 4(+0) Martina & Phil, potatoes
 5(+0) Leanne & Mar, potatoes
 6(+0) Dylan & Kwame, potatoes

The next clue sends teams to the town of Cavendish where they must find Crossfire Paintball.

At the paintball place (15km 16min) teams will come under fire from a bunch (i.e. 5) of other paintball players dressed up as and behaving like zombies. Teams must search the play-field for the next clue, which is hidden in an ammunition box.

The racers will be unarmed but the zombies are not. The players will also be penalized with 1 minute for every hit they take. They get a short piece of rope which they both must hold on to so that they stay together the whole time.

"The zombies are honing in on us", Mellisa
"Specially since somebody is screaming", Nancy

"Paintballs don't hurt that much", Adam tries to cheer up Courtney
"I'm a lover not a fighter", Courtney (nurse)

Leanne gets an anxiety attack on the field. She is claustrophobic and feels enclosed in the mask they have to wear. She can not keep the mask on so they choose to forefeet the challenge.
"I need to take off this mask off", Leanne

Teams complete this task in the following order:
1(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, were hit 15 times
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam, were hit 16 times (3:12 after #1)
3(+0) Taylor & Courtney, were hit 23 times
4(+0) Martina & Phil, where hit 19 times
5(+0) Leanne & Mar, gave up

Leanne gets an anxiety attack on the field. She is claustrophobic and feels enclosed in the mask they have to wear. She can not keep the mask on so they choose to forefeet the challenge.
"I need to take off this mask off", Leanne

Teams complete this task in the following order:
1(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, were hit 15 times
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam, were hit 16 times (3:12 after #1)
3(+0) Taylor & Courtney, were hit 23 times
4(+0) Martina & Phil, where hit 19 times
5(+0) Leanne & Mar, gave up
6(+0) Dylan & Kwame, were hit 14 times

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 9, "The battle of the two Courtney's"
Film date: 2018-05-13 - 2018-05-14

The last pit stop was at Cavendish Beach, PEI. Teams are released from downtown Charlottetown, after along pit stop, in the following order:
1.Nancy & Mellisa  08:53
2.Courtney & Adam  09:00+0:07
3.Taylor & Courtney09:22+0:29
4.Martina & Phil   09:26+0:33
5.Dylan & Kwame    09:39+0:46

Route info: "Fly to Mexico City"

Teams jump into taxis and make their way to the airport. I assume the flights were arranged and they fly over Toronto to Mexico City. They arrive at 23:15 on flight ASA 1982.

Once teams land in Mexico City then need to make their way to Monumento a la Revolución. Teams reach the monument in the following order:
 1. Taylor & Courtney
 2. Courtney & Adam
 3. Nancy & Mellisa
 4. Dylan & Kwame
 5. Martina & Phil

It is not shown in the episode but here teams encountered a sign that the elevator would open at 7am the next morning. They went to a local hotel and spent the night.

The next morning they ride up the elevator in the order they arrived. In the clue box at the top teams find a surf pad with a video message from some loved ones at home. The message ends with the loved ones telling the racers to make their way to Frontón Mexico and search inside for their next clue.

Dylan & Kwame get a message from one of the kids they coach. It gets really emotional and we learn that Kwame tries to be the father figure to this kid which he himself never had.

Tyler & Courtney hail a cab but the driver tells them that their destination is the big red building over there. Nancy & Mellisa get taken for a ride when their taxi drive them around the block to the building. Teams find the clue box inside in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam, just after #1
 3(+0) Nancy & Mellisa
 4(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 5(+0) Martina & Phil

ROAD BLOCK

Who wants to live the
hi-life?

In this road block players get to try the popular sport Jai Alai. They must use a wicker scoop to correctly make one serve. They must stand behind the serve line and throw the ball at the wall so that it bounces back and lands between two lines (3 & 5). This is hard since the serve line seems to be over 21m from the wall and the bounce zone is over 10m from the wall. There are instructors at hand who can help the players with the technique.

The racers may make 3 throws per attempt before they have to go to the back of the line.

"This may be the strangest sport I've ever seen", Courtney (police)

"I feel like captain Hook", Martina about the curved wicker throw thingy latched onto her hand

"Technically you don't need to be an athlete like Mellisa or Dylan, you just need the correct technique", Martina
Martina is right, and she soon find the right technique so she is also out of there.

"It's the battle of the Courtney's", Courtney (police) after the other teams have left but them and Courtney & Adam

"Hey, what's the penalty for a road block", Courtney (police) is starting to panic
"I think I'm getting worse", Courtney (police)

Eventually Courtney (police) realize she can do an underhand throw, and that is much easier and soon after that she gets it.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+3)Dylan* & Kwame    (6-4)
2(+1)Nancy & Mellisa*  (5-5)
3(+2)Martina* & Phil   (5-5)
4(-2)Courtney* & Adam  (5-5)
5(-4)Taylor & Courtney*(5-5)

DETOUR

Detour: "Muertos" or
"Mercado"

Muertos: Become
traditional Day of the
Dead charachters to
receive your next clue.

Mercado: Search the
Central de Abastos
market for produce
needed at a local
restaurant, then make a
batch of Pico de Gallo to
receive your next clue.

Mercado takes place in the worlds largest market, i.e. it is big. Teams get a shopping list which lists what they have to buy and from which four specific stalls.

In muertos teams make their way to Coyoacán. Here they must select two different face paint designs and then make a replica of those designs on each other.

Nancy & Mellisa is the only team doing the shopping detour.
 "This market is huge", Mellisa
Eventually they find a girl named Mary who speaks English and is prepared to help them. This is very good for them because she know the market.

The park where teams are face painting each other is also a popular place for dog owners. So they have an audience. We also have the dog riding a skateboard as an interesting side show.

"Babe, we've got to make up some time here", Adam tries a pun
"This is a good challenge, it's a quiet challenge compared to others where my sister is talking the whole time", Phil

"Our cab driver is so lost", Taylor is having problems getting to the detour

"I feel our team work and communication is great today", Mellisa

Teams complete the detour in the following order
1(+0) Dylan & Kwame, face paint
 2(+0) Nancy & Mellisa, shopping
3(+0) Martina & Phil, face paint
4(+0) Courtney & Adam, face paint
5(+0) Taylor & Courtney, face paint

The next clue sends teams to a private residence in an upscale neighborhood. Here they must take part in the filming of a classic Mexican Telenovela (i.e. a soap opera).

"Traffic is crazy", Dylan tries to get to this challenge

Teams arrive to this challenge in the following order:
 1(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 2(+1) Martina & Phil
 3(+1) Courtney & Adam
 4(-2) Nancy & Mellisa, just after #3
5(+0) Taylor & Courtney, as the first team is leaving

Each racer must choose a character and memorize the character's Spanish dialogue. Then they must perform the scene together with the other actors to the satisfaction of the director. The characters are:

Humberto, the patriarch of the family
Julio, long lost lover
Sylvia, Humberto's wife
Constanza, Hubert's daughter

The episode they are filming is titled "La Case de Pasiones y Vergüenzas" (The House of Shame and Passion). The plot is melodramatic where Julio comes back and reveal that he has had an affair with both Sylvia and Constanza. Over the top is just the foreword when describing it.

All the dialogue is in Spanish, but it turns out that the director is not particularly picky about the pronunciation. Otherwise some teams would have been there for much longer..

"I love you, and your daughter", Adam (Humberto) to Courtney (Sylvia) as they practice

"We only got about a second in, so we're gonna try that again", Courtney (nurse) after their first take
"I looked at that guy with his big brown eyes, and I froze", Mellisa on why she missed her lines

Teams complete this task in the following order:
1(+0) Dylan & Kwame, on their 4th take
2(+0) Martina & Phil, on their 4th take
3(+1) Nancy & Mellisa, on their 3rd take
4(+1) Taylor & Courtney, on their 3rd take
5(-2) Courtney & Adam, on their 5th take

Route info: Make your way to Alameda Central and search the park for Jon and your next pit stop.

Courtney & Adam feel stressed when Taylor & Courtney finish the previous task. But they nail their next attempt and when they emerge Taylor & Courtney are still trying to get a taxi. So there is a frantic hunt for taxis. They seem to find taxis at about the same time and then on the way they catch up with Nancy & Mellisa. So there is an exciting three-way race to not be last. Then at one intersection Taylor & Courtney's taxi turn left and the others go straight. In the end there is a footrace for last.

Teams reach Jon and the pit stop in the following order:
1(+0) Dylan & Kwame, win a trip to Sydney
 2(+0) Martina & Phil
 3(+1) Taylor & Courtney
4(+1) Courtney & Adam, win the footrace
5(-2) Nancy & Mellisa, are eliminated

"They key to success was just letting it all hang out. Run without reserve is what I always say.", Nancy

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 10, "The plan is simple, Win"
Film date: 2018-05-16 - 2018-05-17

The last pit stop was at Alameda Central, Mexico City. Teams depart from somewhere else in Mexico city in the following order:
1.Dylan & Kwame    08:00
2.Martina & Phil   08:23+0:23
3.Taylor & Courtney08:40+0:40
4.Courtney & Adam  08:44+0:44

The first clue tells them to fly back home to Canada more specifically to Fredricton, NB.

All teams are on the same flight from Mexico City to Fredricton via Toronto.

In Fredricton teams jump into taxis and make their way to the Officers' Square in the historic Garrison district.

Here teams will observe a changing of the guards ceremony. They must then make their way to City Hall (400m) where they can observe a different unit performing the same ceremony. The task is to spot the difference between the two ceremonies. Jon tells the viewers that the difference is that at Officers' Square the rear soldiers take 3 steps forward while at City Hall they only take 2.

All teams arrive more or less simultaneously to Officer's Square. Once they have seen the ceremony there they run to City Hall. That is all but Martina & Phil who jump into their taxi. The ceremony at City Hall starts when Martina & Phil arrive and is halfway through when the other teams arrive.

Once teams have spotted the difference they must tell the commander, who seems to be at Officers' Square. They do this in the following order:
 1. Martina & Phil
 2. Dylan & Kwame
 3. Taylor & Courtney
 4. Courtney & Adam

After this task Taylor & Courtney tries to take Courtney & Adams taxi. But the driver does not budge.

Quote
DETOUR

Detour: "Fit" or "Fly"

Fit: Complete an adapted
version of the fitness test
required of all Canadian
Armed Forces Personnel to
receive your next clue.

Fly: Take the controls of a
full-motion flight simulator
and complete a helicopter
mission to receive your next
clue.

NOTE: There are limited
stations at both detours.

Both detours take place on the CFB Gagetown in Burton (25km 23min).

In fit both team members must memorize the complicated rules and then correctly perform a set of 4 exercises. One racer must do all 4 exercise in a sequence and then the other. The combined time must be less than 18 minutes. If anybody does anything wrong have to start all over.

In fly teams will get a short introduction and then get to fly a simulated helicopter mission. They must take off from a ship and fly into Toronto and land on a specific building. They have 5 minutes to complete the flight.

Only 2 teams are allowed at either detour side at the same time.

The flight simulator task gets ominous when the instructor pints out where the air sickness bags are.

At fit the instructions for one of the four exercises look like this:
Quote
                                        1
    20 metre rushes

* To start, lie face down on your stomach,
shoulders and hands behind the start line,
hands behind your head.

* On "go", sprint to the middle line.

* When at least one foot has touched on or
over the middle line, back up and lie face
down behind that line, exactly as you did in
your starting position.

* Then, sprint to the far line.

* Cross over the far line, turn around and
lie face down behind that line, exactly as
you did in your starting position.

* Then, sprint back to the middle line.

* Continue this sequence between each line
until you have completed 8 ten-metre line
sprints.

There is a crowd of military personnel which cheers the racers on as they do the exercise. There is also an instructor who is quick to point out when they fail.

"It's tough to remember when you're going so hard", Kwame

When Taylor & Courtney arrive as the third team to the fit detour so they find a sign that the detour is full. They deliberate for a while but decide to switch. When they arrive at the flight simulator Martina & Phil are just making their 7th attempt.

Courtney & Adam struggle with the fit detour. On his second attempt Adam gets all the way to the last exercise, but does not drag the bags completely over the finish line so he gets a fail. They decide to make Courtney try once and when she fails (also on the last exercise) they immediately decide to switch.

At the fly detour we learn that Taylor likes to play video games, and that comes in handy here as they succeed on their first attempt.

"I am like directionally challenged", Taylor (nurse) about trying to navigate in the helicopter

After 14 attempts at the helicopter landing Phil need to use the airsickness bag provided. This is not making the task any easier.
"I'm sorry Phil, I'll go really gentle", Martina promises to crash more gently the next time (or something like that)

According to interviews afterwards one reason Martina & Phil had such a hard time landing the helicopter was that Martina was too short to reach the landing switch. Eventually Phil had to reach over and flip it.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
1(+1) Dylan & Kwame, fit on their 6th attempt (time 13:34)
2(+1) Taylor & Courtney, wanted to do fit but had to do fly, which they nail on their first attempt
3(-2) Martina & Phil, fly which they got on their 18th attempt
4(+0) Courtney & Adam, started fit but switched to fly, which they got on their 4th attempt

After this challenge Dylan & Kwame realize they did not ask their cab to wait. They too try to steal Courtney & Adams cab, but the driver will not take them. He calls for another for them cab though.

Quote
FACE OFF

Let's hit the hardwood
for another Face Off!

Beat your opponent in
the wheelchair version
of a Canadian invention,
basketball!

Teams must now compete in wheelchair half court basketball. Each team get the help of a third player who can pass and block but not score. They will then play another team in a 15 minute match. If the score is even after 15 minutes the match goes into sudden death.

The face off takes place at the University of New Brunswick in the Lady Beavervrook Gymnasium (24km 18min).

"These guys have arms bigger than my neck", Courtney (police) about their first opponents Dylan & Kwame

"Phil & Martina just showed up. The plan is simple, win", Kwame gets the title
"I don't know what I'm doing", Martina has a hard time in the wheelchair

Adam is going a bit too hard in his wheelchair so he tends to fall over backwards.

Teams leave the face off in the following order:
1(+1) Taylor & Courtney, win against Dylan & Kwame (12-8)
2(-1) Dylan & Kwame, win against Martina & Phil (22-8)
3(+1) Courtney & Adam, win against Martina & Phil after sudden death (10-8)
 4(-1) Martina & Phil

ROAD BLOCK

Who thinks a picture is
worth at least one word?

This road block takes place at the Beaverbrook art gallery (2km). Here teams must identify 6 paintings in Wolastoqey. Each painting is labeled with its name and a description in both English and Wolastoqey. For example:
Quote
                      Wiwonuwehstuhtimok
                        Talking Circle

Ktokehkimkepon weci woli tpostomuhtiyeq. Psiw ote wen kisi qotuhkawestu
weci psiw wen nutok elitahasit. Komac koluwot psiw ote wen kisewestaq.

We are being taught to become good listeners. Everyone is given the opportunity
to speak when it is their turn in order to share their thoughts. It is good medicine
to allow everyone to speak.

The racers must listen to questions by an elder outside the museum and answer with the title (in Wolastoqey) of the painting the elder is asking for. The catch is that the questions are in Wolastoqey.

Adam is good at memorizing the painting details, but he responds with the English title.
"I have no idea what I'm doing at this challenge", A frustrated Adam

The pressure builds on Adam when Martina turns up.
"My sister is good with words, she talks a lot", Phil

Finally Adam rereads his clue and see what he is doing wrong and he starts to make progress.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Taylor* & Courtney(6-5)
2(+0)Dylan & Kwame*    (6-5)
3(+0)Courtney & Adam*  (5-6)
4(+0)Martina* & Phil   (6-5)

Route info: "Make your way to Government house and search the grounds for Jon and your next pit stop".

The clue also warns that the last team to check in will be eliminated.

Teams reach Jon at the pit stop (2km) in the following order:
1(+0) Taylor & Courtney, win a trip to Buenos Aires
 2(+0) Dylan & Kwame
 3(+0) Courtney & Adam
4(+0) Martina & Phil, are eliminated

"If you want to go fast you go alone, if you want to go far you go together", Phil
"It was like the ride of my life, best time", Martina

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 6, Episode 11, "The Summer of Heroes"
Film date: 2018-05-18 - 2018-05-19

The last pit stop was at Government house in Fredericton, NB. Teams depart from the same place the next day in the following order:
1.Taylor & Courtney15:38
2.Dylan & Kwame    16:16+0:38
3.Courtney & Adam  16:46+1:08

The first clue tells them that this is the final leg of the race and that they should fly to Calgary, AB.

"We're going home!", Courtney (nurse) when they open the clue

Everybody is on the same flight from Fredericton to Calgary via Toronto.

Once teams land in Calgary they must make their way to the air traffic control tower where they will find their next clue.

It is early morning when teams rush up to the clue box so we can assume they spent the night somewhere. Teams run up to the clue box close to each other so there is only a couple of seconds between the first or last team.

Road block: "Who likes to play it by ear?"

In this road block players must enter the air traffic control tower simulator at the base of the tower. Here they will get a pair of headphones and can listen to an ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) announcement. They must memorize a 30 second message. Once they have the message memorized they may make their way to the control room at the top of the tower where they must recite it to the senior controller.

The message reads:
Quote
Calgary international information Papa.
Weather at one-three-zero-zero Zulu.
Wind two eight zero at ten.
Visibility one-five. Eighth-thousand broken.
Temperature one-five. Dew point one-two.
Altimeter three-zero-one-zero.
Helicopter arrival and departures apron two
Inform ATC that you have Information Papa.

"This isn't like police radio chatter", Courtney (police)

It is unclear if they are listening to a recording or the actual ATIS over the radio. In any case there is the usual radio static in the background making it harder to hear what they are saying. Kwame has a lot of trouble with the word "altimeter" which he hears as "alternative" or "alternate".

Courtney (nurse) also has a lot of trouble. She says 'tell' instead of 'inform' in the last line of the message. As she finally gets it she says that she does not know what she did differently. The judge is kind and tells her what she did wrong in her earlier attempts.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1.Taylor & Courtney*(6-6)
2.Courtney* & Adam  (6-6)
3.Dylan & Kwame*    (6-6)

"Damn, Taylor & Courtney are not the team you want in the lead", Dylan when Taylor & Courtney leave
"I'm pretty frustrated and Courtney & Taylor have a pretty big lead on us", Courtney (nurse) as they leave the air traffic control building

Route info: "Top of the mountain for you".

Teams must now head to apron 2 and board a helicopter which will take them to Banff National Park. The helicopter will land near the top of mount Fable. Here teams must walk to the top and get their next clue. The Helicopters seem to be provided by Alpine Helicopters.

The helicopter ride looks awesome, the views are gorgeous.
"This is possibly the coolest thing I've ever done", Courtney (police)
"I proposed to Courtney down that way", Adam points out the landmarks

The clue at the top of the mountain tells them to make their way to the Sunshine village in Banff national park. Here they must ride the cable car to the top station and search for their next clue.

Teams now get back into their helicopters which will take them down the mountain to their base in Canmore. Here teams can call for a taxi and then make their way to Sunshine Village (44km 33min). After going up the lift teams have no problem finding the clue box.

Road block: "Who's top dog?"

This is a two part road block. The first part is Skijoring. The racers will be placed on skis and will be shackled to two dogs which will then drag them. They must go two laps around the course.

In part two they must ride a small sled down a course and across a pond of cold slushy water to the finish line beyond.

These tasks must be performed by the team member who did not do the control tower road block.

Teams have to ride a chairlift up to the dog skiing task.

This task looks fun but does not really mean much in the race. There does not seem to be any big gains to be made. And the teams are well separated when they arrive so we never see them compete against each other.

"Just us up here, I don't hate that", Courtney (police) about the fact that they have a good lead.

Taylor has an interesting experiences when crossing the slush pond. He is going quite fast so when his sled is bogged down in the water he is thrown off it and hits the side of the pool. He crashes spectacularly so it is a good thing he is wearing a helmet. The GoPro camera he was carrying gets crushed but seems to survive.

Adam on the other hand end up in the pool and later he manages to hit Courtney is the head with his GoPro.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1.Taylor* & Courtney(7-6)Before the next team arrives
2.Courtney & Adam*  (6-7)Before the next team arrives
3.Dylan* & Kwame    (7-6)Before the next team arrives

ROUTE INFO

Make your way to the
Banff National Park
Administration Building
and search the grounds
outside for your next
clue.

As Taylor & Courtney ride the cabin lift down the mountain they pass Adam & Courtney who are on their way up. Adam starts a timer on his clock to see how far behind they are. Taylor & Courtney estimate they are about 45 minutes ahead.

Teams arrive at the administration building (19km 19min) in the following order:
 1(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 2(+0) Courtney & Adam
 3(+0) Dylan & Kwame

Quote
ROUTE INFO

Exit this Race through
the gift shop

Search the shops of
Banff for souvenirs that
represent people, places
or things you have seen
during this season of the
Race. Then correctly
display them to receive
your next clue.

Teams must make their way to Banff Avenue (500m) and search the 10 marked stores for souvenirs representing things they have seen or met during the race. All the souvenirs they may take are marked with a race flag on the bottom. There are multiple souvenirs scattered among ten stores and teams must find at least two marked souvenirs for each of the 11 legs (there seem to be more than two available). Once they have collected the souvenirs they think they need they must make their way back to the administration building and display them in the correct order.

 "I hate shopping", Courtney (police)
"Oh my gosh, hi-life, I don't wanna carry that one", the shopping brings back painful memories for Courtney (police)

Adam & Courtney have a more methodical approach where Courtney makes a note of what they find and which leg it belongs to as they find them.

"Adam & Courtney showed up", Taylor comments to the camera
"Yeah, we did", Adam overhears and comments

Both teams get a sense of urgency by this meeting. Taylor & Courtney realize they are not safe and Adam & Courtney that there is still a chance to catch up. And a while later Dylan & Kwame turn up so it turns into a three-way race.

Taylor & Courtney head back to the administration building once they have collected 22 souvenirs.

"We need one from Banff and one from Jakarta", Courtney (nurse) is very organized

As Taylor & Courtney place their souvenirs on the podium they realize that they have three for two of the legs and as they just collected 22 souvenirs they are missing two (from legs 8 & 11). They have to go back to town to find more.

When Adam & Courtney get back to the administration building they are happy to see that Taylor & Courtney's bags are still here. They feel they have a chance. They quickly place their souvenirs on the podium, but are told that it is not correct. The viewer get to see that they have 21 of 22. Their only mistake is that they have a zombie statue on the Mexico leg. They think it represents the day of the dead when it really refers to the Zombie paintball. They start rearranging things.

As Adam & Courtney are rearranging their souvenirs Taylor & Courtney come back with their last two souvenirs. They quickly place them on their podium and call for a check. They are told it is incorrect. They quickly zero in on the Banff leg, one of their souvenirs is a airplane, and they think that is wrong (and they are correct). They realize they have to go back to town again.

Back in town Taylor & Courtney have trouble finding another Banff souvenir. They look through all the stores and eventually they find one more marked store which they previously missed and here they find helicopter souvenirs.

Meanwhile back at the administration building Courtney & Adam are desperately trying different combinations.

"I would be shocked if Adam & Courtney beat us", Courtney (police) on their way back

And that is when Adam realizes that the Zombies represent the paintball challenge, not day of the dead. Luckily for them they brought any extra souvenirs they found during their search so they have one more from Mexico.

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
 1(+1) Courtney & Adam
 2(-1) Taylor & Courtney
 3(+0) Dylan & Kwame

The next clue is a route info which directs them to the end of the race. The finish line is at the fifth hole at the Fairmont Banff Springs golf course. To get here teams must traverse over and raft down the Bow river. Once they land they must find the Tunnel nine golf course and the fifth hole.

Getting to the golf course is no problem. But then finding hole #5 turns out to be a bit harder. Specially since it turns out there are two golf courses here, and they landed on the wrong one. The golfers they meet do not seem to know exactly which way to go to hole #5. So we get lots of shots of teams running around the golf course.

At least of the first two teams. Dylan & Kwame seem still be back in town looking for souvenirs.

Teams reach the finish line in the following order:
1(+0) Courtney & Adam, win the $250,000, an around the world trip and a pair of sponsor cars.
 2(+0) Taylor & Courtney
 3(+0) Dylan & Kwame

At the mat we learn that Courtney & Adam are getting married in November, and they invite all the other teams.

"It's hard for these heroes not to help", Adam how the other teams have helped them during the race
"It really doesn't matter where you go in this country, there's always something new and beautiful to find", Dylan
"I'm just truly thankful to be Canadian. This is a land where you don't have to look alike to be brothers and sisters", Kwame

Thanks for the AWESOME recaps again this season, maf!  :conf: :cheer: :woohoo:
