Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 5, Episode 1, "Who wants to be the python?"
Film date: 2017-04-26 - 2017-04-27

This season start at the Queens battery overlooking St Johns, Newfoundland. The 10 teams are traveling there by boat. They are:

  • Korey & Ivana, personal trainers from Toronto
  • Kenneth & Ryan, best friends from Collingwood, ON
  • Dan & Riya, YouTube creators from Toronto
  • Adam & Andrea, Brother and sister from Montreal
  • Aaron & Deb, mother and son from Grand Forks, BC
  • Karen & Bert, married couple from Edmonton, AB
  • Andrea & Ebonie, business partners from Montreal
  • Zed & Shabbir, father and son from Vancouver
  • Megan & Courtney, cousins from Corner Brook, NL
  • Sam & Paul, dating couple from Toronto

At the starting line Jon tells teams that the grand prize will be two cars (one each), an around the world trip for two, $250,000 and the title.

At the starting line teams run to their backpacks and their first clue. This reads: "Make your way to Cabot tower at the signal hill national historic site."

Teams must now run to the tower, which is only a few hundred meters away. Here teams will find a loudspeaker broadcasting a message in Morse code. The producers have also provided boards showing the key to deciphering Morse signals. Teams must use these to decipher the message from the speaker. The message reads "Vancouver Capilano Bridge". Once teams have cracked the code and told the judge the message they will receive their next clue.

Some teams make some spectacularly wrong guesses. Andrea & Ebonie makes an even bigger mistake and assume, after barely trying, that they can't finish this task and decide to take the penalty. This means they will have a two hour penalty waiting for them at the finish line.

Teams leave this task in the following order:
  1. Andrea & Ebonie, took the penalty
  2. Zed & Shabbir
  3. Sam & Paul
  4. Adam & Andrea
  5. Kenneth & Ryan
  ?. Korey & Ivana
  ?. Dan & Riya
  ?. Aaron & Deb
  ?. Karen & Bert
  ?. Megan & Courtney

"No one is going to get it, it's gonna take them hours", Andrea & Ebonie think they know

Route info: "Fly to Vancouver B.C.". Teams must now jump into one of the provided cars and drive themselves to the airport and get tickets on one of two flights to Vancouver. There is only room for five teams on the first flight.

Teams get $600 on their Bemo cards for this leg of the race.

At the airport Andrea & Ebonie regret their decision to quit the first task.

Flight #1 carries:
 Andrea & Ebonie
 Zed & Shabbir
 Adam & Andrea
 Sam & Paul
 Kenneth & Ryan

Flight #2 carries:
 Korey & Ivana
 Megan & Courtney
 Karen & Bert
 Dan & Riya
 Aaron & Deb

Once teams land in Vancouver they must make their way to Capilano suspension bridge park (23km 30-60min). There they must find a falconer who has their next clue.

We are not told how much time separates the flights. But it can not be much since the second flight lands while the first batch of teams are still in their taxis on their way to the park.

Teams find the falconer in the following order:
  1. Andrea & Ebonie
  2. Sam & Paul
  3. Zed & Shabbir
  4. Kenneth & Ryan
  5. Adam & Andrea
  6. Megan & Courtney
  ?. Korey & Ivana
  ?. Dan & Riya
  ?. Aaron & Deb
 10. Karen & Bert

The next clue tells teams to find Gassy Jack. This is a statue in Gastown.

Teams find the clue by Gassy Jack in the following order:
  1(+0) Andrea & Ebonie
  2(+0) Sam & Paul
3(+1) Kenneth & Ryan, less than a minute after #2
  4(-1) Zed & Shabbir
  5(+1) Megan & Courtney
  6(+?) Aaron & Deb
  7(+?) Korey & Ivana
  8(-3) Adam & Andrea
  9(+?) Dan & Riya
 10(+0) Karen & Bert

Road block: "Who's feeling uptight?"

Teams must now find the Fairmont hotel Vancouver (1.6km) and there the players doing the road block must walk a tightrope between two towers 40m apart 12 stories above the street. They have a safety rope hanging from above which they can hold on to and if they fall there is a short bungee cord stopping their fall. If they fall they must go to the back of the line and try again.

"I want to get across on the first try so that the penalty doesn't weigh that much", Ebonie
"What's a tightrope?", Dan reads the task info
"I'm so happy I'm not doing this", Andrea

There are two tightropes available for walking so there is a lot of time spent waiting in line. Also it seems nobody but Ivana and Bert manages to complete the walk on their first attempt. Adam almost falls down but land sitting on the tightrope. He then manages to slide all the way to the end.

Karen & Bert initially went to the wrong Fairmont hotel. Then Bert has a unique strategy he slides out onto the tightrope and then swings around so he hangs under it. He then proceeds to slide all the way to the other end hanging under the wire.

Deb turns out to be the wrong person to do this task. She gets dizzy and Aaron have to come up and comfort her. But she recovers and manages to complete the task.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Andrea & Ebonie* (0-1)
2(+1)Kenneth & Ryan*  (0-1)
3(+2)Megan* & Courtney(1-0)
4(+3)Korey & Ivana*   (0-1)
5(+3)Adam* & Andrea   (1-0)
6(-4)Sam & Paul*      (0-1)
7(-3)Zed & Shabbir*   (0-1)
8(+2)Karen & Bert*    (0-1)
9(+0)Dan* & Riya      (1-0)
10(-4)Aaron & Deb*     (0-1)

The next clue is a detour:
Quote
DETOUR

Detour: "Pedal" or
"Paddle"

Pedal: Join the East Van
Bike Polo club and
successfully complete a
series of drills to receive
your next clue.

Paddle: Take control of a
dragon boat and
navigate the race course
under the time limit to
receive your next clue.

NOTE: There are limited
????? both detours.

In pedal teams must make their way to Sunset beach and complete a set of bike polo drills.

In paddle teams must make their way to Falls Creek and join a dragon boat crew. One team member must help paddle the boat while the other will steer the boat by using a set of specific commands.

Steering the boat turns out to be the difficult part. But not too difficult since nobody seems to fail more than once.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
  1(+1) Kenneth & Ryan, paddle
  2(-1) Andrea & Ebonie, pedal
  3(+1) Korey & Ivana, pedal
  4(+1) Adam & Andrea, paddle
  5(+1) Sam & Paul, paddle
  6(+1) Zed & Shabbir, pedal
  7(+1) Karen & Bert, pedal
  8(+1) Dan & Riya, pedal
9(-6) Megan & Courtney, started paddle but switched to pedal
 10(+0) Aaron & Deb, pedal

Teams must now make their way to the Vandusen Botanical Garden here they can find Jon and the pit stop in the middle of the maze.

Teams reach Jon in the following order:
1(+0) Kenneth & Ryan, win a trip to Barcelona, Spain
  - Andrea & Ebonie, have to wait out their 2h penalty
  2(+1) Korey & Ivana
  3(+1) Adam & Andrea
  4(+1) Sam & Paul
  5(+1) Zed & Shabbir
  6(+1) Karen & Bert
  7(-5) Andrea & Ebonie
  8(+0) Dan & Riya
  9(+0) Megan & Courtney
10(+0) Aaron & Deb, are eliminated

"There's no words to describe how excited to actually be a part of this with my mom", Aaron

ROUTE INFO

Drive yourselves to
WildPlay Park at Vista
Ridge and search for
your next clue.

On the way to Vista Ridge Adam & Andrea make a wrong turn. As they stop for directions they find that Dan & Riya and Korey & Ivana are also there. They all decide to follow each other to Vista Ridge. Korey & Ivana is the team with the directions and of course Adan & Andrea loose the other teams at a red light.

Teams arrive at Vista Ridge (21km 20min) in the following order:
 1. Kenneth & Ryan
 2. Karen & Bert
 3. Zed & Shabbir
 4. Andrea & Ebonie, a second after #3
 5. Megan & Courtney
 6. Sam & Paul
 7. Korey & Ivana
 8. Dan & Riya, just after #7
 9. Adam & Andrea, got seriously lost and arrive when only two teams remain

Here teams find a road block: Who's a triple threat?

In this task players need to search an adventure course for their next clue. The course is a set of platforms connected with various forms of suspension bridges, ropes, nets, zip-lines etc. Each clue comes in three parts and players must find them all to be allowed to continue. The clue parts are stored in pouches on the different platforms. Three express passes are also hidden on the course.

If any team finds more than one express pass they can only use one for themselves and must give the others away before the end of the next leg.

"I love climbing and jumping. This makes me happy!", Andrea

Kenneth is lucky here. While he is searching for the final clue he happens to find all three express passes. And he is very excited about each of them so the other teams can't help but notice that he has them. Also one of the instructors tells teams that all the express passes have been taken.

Andrea is the first person to find all clues, but she keep searching the course for the last remaining express pass. But as soon as Kenneth finds it she leaves.

Kenneth is missing one clue and runs into Karen who is missing two. They turn out to both have seen the clue(s) the other is missing so they tell each other where they are and go on.

Here we learn that Andrea (Adams partner) had surgery on her right knee a year ago and she hopes it will hold up.

"This challenge sucks", Ivana when there are only two teams left

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+3)Andrea* & Ebonie (1-1)
2(+3)Megan & Courtney*(1-1)
3(-2)Kenneth* & Ryan  (1-1)
4(-2)Karen* & Bert    (1-1)
5(+1)Sam & Paul*      (0-2)
6(-3)Zed & Shabbir*   (0-2)
7(+2)Adam & Andrea*   (1-1)
8(-1)Korey* & Ivana   (1-1)
9(-1)Dan & Riya*      (1-1)

Quote
Detour: "Pump It" or "Pull It"

NOTE: There are limited stations at
both detours.

Quote
Pump It: In this 150 challenge, get a firefighting
water pump up and running and extinguish a
controlled fire to receive your next clue.

Quote
Pull It: Shoulder a 20-gauge shotgun and hit 15
targets out of the sky to receive your next clue.

In "Pull It" teams must visit a trap shooting range and shoot down 15 targets. They must take turns shooting (switch after 3 shots) but it does not matter who hits the targets as long as they reach a total of 15.

In "Pump It" teams must take part in a fire preventing challenge. They must first carry a 120lb pump to a nearby water reserve. There they must figure out how to operate the pump and to assemble the provided hoses. Once done they can put out a controlled fire burning nearby.

The catch at the pump is that the hoses a barely long enough for the water to reach the fire. And of course teams have to figure out that they have to place the pump itself into the water. But that is something which just the first teams must figure out (and Andrea & Ebonie seem to be the ones who do it), the rest can see how they have set things up.

There are only five available spots at either detour.

Kenneth pulls hard on his hose to get close, so he starts dragging their pump out of the water. Ryan starts pulling back and we have a classic tug-o-war.
"You got to leave my hose alone dude", Ryan gets the title

"I'm the one with the bigger hose right now so he should be listening, but he's not", Karen (who is putting out the fire) wants Bert to listen

The last two teams Korey & Ivana and Dan & Riya are shooting next to each other. Initially none of them are hitting any targets and both teams are feeling the pressure. Dan is the first to start hitting targets but Korey soon finds his stride and eventually it is Korey & Ivana who hits their last target just before Dan & Riya.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
1(+1) Megan & Courtney, pump it
2(-1) Andrea & Ebonie, pump it, just after #1
3(+0) Kenneth & Ryan, pump it
4(+1) Sam & Paul, pump it
5(+1) Zed & Shabbir, pull it
6(-2) Karen & Bert, pump it
7(+0) Adam & Andrea, pull it
8(+0) Korey & Ivana, pull it
9(+0) Dan & Riya, pull it

Route info: "Drive yourself to Phoenix Heli-Flight".

Teams arrive at the helicopter place in the following order:
 1(+1) Andrea & Ebonie
 2(-1) Megan & Courtney
 3(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 4(+0) Sam & Paul
 5(+0) Zed & Shabbir
 6(+0) Karen & Bert
 7(+0) Adam & Andrea
 8(+0) Korey & Ivana
 9(+0) Dan & Riya

Quote
You've got a weight

While maintaining the

the correct amount of
fuel needed for a

...

Teams are give a board with a lot of numbers on it

Fuel        x1      180  x2
Baggage     100     156  15,600
Total                           CG=MX/M

They must calculate the two missing numbers (x1 and x2). There is also an example board which reads:
HelicopterWeight M in (lbs)Arm XMoment MXCentre of Gravity(CG_
Empty Weight2.498.50167.5   418,499LIMITS 150.9-152.5
Pilot       200     92.5    18.500

Total M     4,028.50Total MX622.604CG=MX/M
                                   154/54958

Teams seem to be given calculators to help them with the math. The problem is actually pretty simple once you realize that the momentum is just the product of the weight and the arm. You just need to summarize the weight and moment columns and divide them to get the center of gravity. It is now possible to calculate the amount of fuel which causes a certain CG, Megan & Courtney seem to do this or you can just test with different amounts of fuel until you find one which gives an acceptable center of gravity (all other teams seem to do this). A little math tells us that the fuel must be between 290 to 505 lb to give a center of gravity within the given limits.

All teams get the same values, which in my opinion is a pity, It would have been better if they all had different values.

 "Okay, this is easy", Megan
"I hate math with a passion", Ryan

Kenneth & Ryan are stuck at this task and when Karen & Bert get it quickly the former goes over and offers them an express pass if they help them. Both teams are happy with the deal, and I think they should be because it is good for both of them.

Zed & Shabbir are stuck with the math and when Adam & Andrea arrive they waste no time before asking if they want to work together. Both teams agree to this.

Teams solve this problem in the following order:
 1(+1) Megan & Courtney
 2(-1) Andrea & Ebonie
 3(+1) Sam & Paul
 4(+2) Karen & Bert
 5(-2) Kenneth & Ryan
 6(-1) Zed & Shabbir
 7(+0) Adam & Andrea
 8(+0) Korey & Ivana
 9(+0) Dan & Riya, close after #8

As they fly towards the pit stop racers can see the devastation left by the big fire a year before. This gets really real when Megan & Courtney's pilot point out to where his house was.

Teams reach the pit stop in the following order:
1(+0) Megan & Courtney, win a trip to Auckland, New Zealand
 2(+0) Andrea & Ebonie

ROUTE INFO

Fly to Castlegar, British
Columbia!

Once there, find your
next clue in the All-
Electric 2017 Chevrolet
Bolt EV.

You have $250.00 on your
BMO Cashback
MasterCard for this leg
of the race.

Teams travel by taxi to the airport where they all end up on the same flight to Castlegar.

At the airport Kenneth & Ryan approach Megan & Courtney and give them one of the express passes. Kenneth & Ryan think this is a good idea because they gave the pass to a smart team which can help them. Meanwhile Megan & Courtney are surprised they got the pass since they just won the last leg.

Again there is no problem finding the cars at the airport in Castlegar. Inside the cars teams find a route info telling them to drive to Zuckerberg Island (7min 4.8km). The clue also tells them that the team which drives most efficiently in this leg will win $5000.

At the island teams find an active route marker: "Time for a camp inspection".

There are ten campsites set up on the island. They are almost identical, but not quite. Teams must study the example campsite and then find the nine other campsites and spot what is different at each of them. One difference is that the handle of the cook set lies within one of the pots at the example but hangs on the edge at campsite Bald Eagle.

"It's quite difficult to spot the differences", Kenneth realizes that the task is hard

Andrea turn out to be good at drawing so she quickly draws a picture of the example tent. She and Adam has also decided to work with Andrea & Ebonie during this task.

"I'm absolutely not a camper. I don't have interest in camping. I like hotels!", Ivana

The hardest thing to spot is probably the window which is rolled down at camp Dandelion.

After a while Zed & Shabbir start working with Korey & Ivana. This turns out to be a good idea since together they have already found all differences.

Kenneth & Ryan get value for the express pass they gave to Megan & Courtney when they ask the first for the answer as Megan & Courtney are done. And Megan & Courtney does help them.

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
 1. Adam & Andrea
 2. Andrea & Ebonie
 3. Zed & Shabbir
 4. Korey & Ivana
 5. Megan & Courtney
 6. Kenneth & Ryan
 7. Sam & Paul
 8. Karen & Bert

Drive yourself to Oso
Negro Roastery in
Nelson, B.C.

Once there, correctly fill
and deliver coffee orders
to receive your next clue.

Here we realize that Korey & Ivana have a hard time navigating.
"It's so difficult to tell if you're going the right way if you don't know where you are.", Ivana

Teams arrive at the coffee roastery (37min 44.6km) in the following order:
 1(+2) Zed & Shabbir
 2(-1) Adam & Andrea
 3(-1) Andrea & Ebonie, together with #2
 4(+1) Megan & Courtney
 5(-1) Korey & Ivana
 6(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 7(+0) Sam & Paul
 8(+0) Karen & Bert

Here teams must deliver Corfu on foot to two local addresses. While doing this they learn that Nelson is a very hilly town
 "These hills are steep", Shabbir
"This challenge involves navigation and navigation is not our strong suit", Adam

Each team have a different set of orders so they all have to go to different addresses.

Karen & Bert feel stressed for teeing in last so they use their express pass as soon as they reach the roastery.

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
1(+7) Karen & Bert, used their express pass
 2(-1) Zed & Shabbir
 3(+0) Andrea & Ebonie
 4(+3) Sam & Paul
 5(+0) Korey & Ivana
 6(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 7(-5) Adam & Andrea
 8(-4) Megan & Courtney

ROAD BLOCK

Who wants to hang with
Bob?

The bob in this case is the Big Orange Bridge spanning the Kootenay river. In this road block contestants must swing from a rope under the bridge, then jump into the water and swim to an orange buoy where they can pick up their next clue. Finally they have to swim ashore to meet up with their partner.

Bert is no fan of either heights or water, but he does the task.
"Sometimes it is best to just do the damn thing", Bert
"This is insane, I don't want to jump off a bridge", Andrea (of Adam & Andrea)

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Karen & Bert*    (1-2)
2(+0)Zed* & Shabbir   (1-2)
3(+1)Sam* & Paul      (1-2)
4(+2)Kenneth & Ryan*  (1-2)
5(-2)Andrea* & Ebonie (2-1)
6(+1)Adam & Andrea*   (1-2)
7(+1)Megan* & Courtney(2-1)
8(-3)Korey & Ivana*   (1-2)

Detour: Strike it or throw it

In throw it teams must learn to sculpt ceramics. They must make two cups by throwing clay. They can do one each or one of them can do both. The only thing the judge seems to look at is that it is relieve even and the height.

In strike it teams must forge two decorative hooks. There are metal rods they can heat in an oven and then all they need to do is hammer them correctly. This is easier said than done.

Both sides of the detour take place at Selkirk College and both are frustratingly difficult but can be mastered after trying for a while. At least by most teams.
"I do music but not heavy metal", Bert has never done any blacksmithing before
"My cylinder looks like a work of art, his abstract at best", Zed while doing pottery
"We can not do this", Courtney after seeing the pottery demonstration
"This is more romantic than I thought", Korey about doing pottery

Megan & Courtney really struggle with this detour. Upon seeing the pottery demonstration they decided that it is too hard. But it turns out that blacksmithing is event harder. They have problem hitting the iron correctly.
"Stop hitting the anvil, hit the red stuff", The judge is not happy with Courtney
After a while they realize that this will take forever for them so they switch to pottery.

Meanwhile Andrea & Ebonie are feeling depressed since they are the only ones left at the pottery side. They get a boost of energy when Megan & Courtney walk in.

Kenneth & Ryan also feel the pressure when all other teams have left the blacksmithing task. They make a quick trip to the pottery and are relieved to see two teams still there.
"We can save our express pass and get out of here before them", Kenneth
But after failing yet another attempt at making even one acceptable hook they decide to not risk it any more and whip out their express pass.

1(+1) Zed & Shabbir, throw it
2(+6) Korey & Ivana, throw it
3(+3) Adam & Andrea, throw it

5(-2) Sam & Paul, strike it
6(-2) Kenneth & Ryan, strike it, used their express pass
7(+0) Megan & Courtney, looked at throw it, switched to strike it but eventually went back to throw it
8(-3) Andrea & Ebonie, throw it, just after #7

Drive yourselves to the

at your next Pit Stop.

Warning!! The last team
to check in may be
eliminated.

Karen & Bert are convinced that they are first when they drive to the pit stop. They used their express pass and they were the first team to leave the blacksmithing task. So they are disappointed to be in fifth.

Courtney almost forget her fanny pack at the detour but they realize it and run back to grab it. And as she does this we see Andrea & Ebonie read their last clue. So they are very close.

"Dammit, I just heard them screaming", The last team approaches the pit stop

Teams reach Jon in the following order:
1(+0) Zed & Shabbir, win a trip to Chicago
 2(+0) Korey & Ivana
 3(+0) Adam & Andrea
 4(+1) Sam & Paul
 5(-1) Karen & Bert
 6(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 7(+1) Andrea & Ebonie, lost a footrace to #6
 8(=1) Megan & Courtney

And so Megan & Courtney join the illustrious ranks of teams being eliminated while carrying an express pass.

"We have never done anything like this before", Megan

And finally Jon gather the remaining teams an announce that Kenneth & Ryan won the $5000 bonus price for efficient driving.

This was a surprising episode. Megan & Courtney went from first to worst and all the express passes are gone.

Teams must first travel from Castlegar to Vancouver where they have to find the offices of Sinorama Travel. Here they will pick up a travel pack including their airline tickets and a small gift.

All teams are on the same flight to Beijing. Once they land teams jump into taxis and make their way to the Yu Yong Pass. Some teams have great luck with their taxis and find drivers who speak at least a little bit of English. Others have worse luck. Korey & Ivana find a driver who is driving really slow, like so slow that eventually they have him stop and get into another taxi.

Once they arrive at the wall teams have no problem seeing the big marker which indicates where their next clue is.

"This is a butt workout", Andrea & Ebonie get the title as they climb up to the clue box

Teams reach the clue box (55min 61km) in the following order:
 1. Adam & Andrea
 2. Zed & Shabbir

You've hit a wall!

Lead a group of visitors
on a Sinorama Holidays
guided tour of the Great
Wall of China to receive
your next clue.

Teams must dress up as guides and are given a script which they must learn, The script reads:

Quote
Racer 1: Ni Hao! (KNEE-HOW)

Racer 2: Hen Gao Xing Jian Dao Ni! (HEN GAO SING JEN
DAO NI)

Racer 1: Welcome to the Great Wall of China, also known
in French as la Grand Muraille de China (LA GRAND
MURE-EYE DE SHEEN), where over 60 million people visit
each year. Once used for wartime defense, the wall runs
through China, stretching over 21,000 kilometres.

Racer 2: While much of what is visible today was built
during the Ming dynasty, construit durant la dynastie
Ming (CONE-STREW-WEE DU-RAND LA DEE-NASTY
MING), construction began on various seconds as far
back as 770 B.C.

Racer 1: Zhu Yuanzhan (JEW U-AN JANG), the first
emperor of the Ming Dynasty, le premier empereur de la
dynastie Ming (LE PRA-ME-EH AMP-E-ROAR DE LA DEE-
NASTY MING), ordered the pass to be rebuilt to protect
the northern borders from Mongol invasion.

east is Shanhau (SHEN-HIGH) Pass. This Pass runs all the
way to the sea.

Racer 1: Merci pour votre visite! (MARE-SEE POUR VOTE-
TRE VEE-ZEET)

Racer 2: Thank you, or as they say in Mandarin, Xi Xi Ni!
(SHE-EY SHE-EY KNEE)

Once they have learned the script teams must guide a group along the wall. Only one team at a time can try this task.
"A plus for us in this challenge is that we do speak French, but our Mandarin is horrible", Andrea (of Adam & Andrea)
"I studied TV-hosting, so memorizing a script is something that's just really natural for me", Ebonie

Teams complete this task in the following order:

Detour: "In Sync or "In

In Sync: Execute a
synchronized dive and
earn a high enough
score from a panel of
judges to receive your
next clue.

In Line: Join a group  of
...

In sync takes place at Yingtong Natatorium. Here teams must learn synchronized jumping from the 5m platform. They need to land head first simultaneously into the water and get a combined score 20 or more from the three judges (on a scale of 0-10 from each) to get their next clue.

In Line requires teams to dress up and learn a choreographed dance routine.

Both detours take place close to each other (20min 10km).

"It's an unbelievable amount of pressure just because my whole family has diving in their bloods", Sam

Adam & Andrea discuss a bit about which detour to take. Andrea is afraid of heights and does not want to do diving. She manages to persuade Adam to do dancing.
"Dancing is not my thing", Adam

"Oh my god. That's all?", Shabbir tries the provided swimsuits, which are kind of revealing
"Hopefully this is going to be an easy one', Ebonie
"I didn't think I would suck that much", Ebonie after her first practice jump

Ebonie is having a hard time with the diving. She tends to land on her stomach instead of head first.
"I'm not capable of doing it", Ebonie
So they decide to switch detour.

 "Dude, this is hard", Paul
"That's kind of the point" Sam

Korey & Ivana are way behind the other teams and when they arrive at the diving detour all other teams have left. After two jumps Ivanas back is hurting bad. So bad that they decide to change detour.
"I'm in so much pain that I can barely walk", Ivana

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
1(+0) Zed & Shabbir, diving on their 3rd attempt
2(+3) Kenneth & Ryan, diving on their 2nd attempt
3(+0) Sam & Paul, diving on their 3rd attempt
4(+2) Karen & Bert, dancing on their 2nd attempt
5(-1) Adam & Andrea, dancing on their 3rd attempt
6(-4) Andrea & Ebonie, started diving but switched to dancing which they did on their 1st attempt
7(+0) Korey & Ivana, started diving but switched to dancing which they did on their 5th attempt

Who wants to play

This road block takes place in a shop which contains 3000 indexed ingredients in over 800 drawers. One team member is given a prescription to fill. Each prescription contains three ingredients and lists how many grams needed and the name, in Chinese, of each ingredient. Players must the search among the drawers for the one and only drawer containing each ingredient. The content of each drawer is listed on the outside, in Chinese. So players need just find the drawer with the corresponding characters as in their recipe (for each ingredient). Finally they must weight up the correct amount of each ingredient.

"We're gonna be here for a little while folks', Shabbir realize there are a lot of drawers
"It's all about detail and I'm not a meticulous person so it's challenging", Ebonie

Korey & Ivana arrive when there are three other teams doing the task. They are very happy because this is the first time they see any other teams since the wall.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+2)Sam* & Paul      (2-2)

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 5, Episode 5, "This is a real cat and mouse chase"
Film date: 2017-05-04 - 2017-05-06

The last episode ended with teams receive their next clue by Jon at the Drum tower in Beijing, China. Teams got this clue in the following order:
 1. Sam & Paul (at 22:05)
 2. Zed & Shabbir
 3. Adam & Andrea
 4. Kenneth & Ryan
 5. Karen & Bert
 6. Korey & Ivana
 7. Andrea & Ebonie

In addition to this clue teams also get a small plush toy.

Before teams can head to Shanghai they must search for their next clue at the Beijingnan railway station.

"I'm terrified of what's to come", Ivana has problems with her back

The clue they get at the railway station contains tickets and some extra info:
Quote
TRAIN PORTER CLUE - TRAIN STATION

Additional information

* You are traveling on Train G5 departing from Beijing South Railway Station at
07:00AM on May 5th, arriving at Shanghai Hogqiao Railway Station.

* You must travel only on the pre-booked train. You may not exchange your
tickets for seats on another train, even if seats are available.

The train trip takes 4:55 so the train arrives in Shanghai at 11:55.

As they pick up this clue Sam & Paul drop the clue about Shanghai. Shortly after that they also drop their train tickets. They soon realize this and go back to look for them.
"We're searching for our train tickets in a city of 21 million people, in the dark"
Against all odds they find their tickets lying on the ground.

Later on the train Sam & Paul ask Adam & Andrea for the information in the clue they lost. And Adam & Andrea agree to help them in exchange for help later in the race.

When teams arrive in Shanghai they all jump into taxis and make their way to Tock's deli. Here teams must say "Xi Xi Ni" to the Sinorama tour guide to receive their next clue. This clue is route info which instructs them to fly to Bangkok, Thailand.

All teams end up on the same flight to Bangkok, probably:
  TG665  PVG-BKK  17:25 - 21:00

Once they land there is the customary mad dash to the taxis and then on to the Caturday Cat Cafe where they will find their next clue. However when they arrive at the cafe they find out that it is currently closed and it opens again at 08:00.

The next morning teams are lined up outside as the cafe opens. They walk in (I guess running is not allowed) and easily find the clues scattered around the cafe.
"This cafe is full of cats. The most weird thing I've ever seen.", Andrea (of Adam & Andrea)

The clue envelope here contains a route info and a fast forward.

Quote
FAST FORWARD

Join takraw players at
the National Stadium of
Thailand and be the first
team to get your ball
through the hoop to win
the Fast Forward!

Note: All teams can
attempt this Fast
Forward at the same
time.

Takraw is a game where teams must kick a ball through a hoop hanging overhead. They may not use their hand and arms and the ball may not touch the ground. In this challenge teams must start with one team member passing the ball to their partner which may then try to hit the hoop.

The national stadium is 2km away.

The route info reads:
Quote
ROUTE INFO

Take a long tail boat
through the klongs of
Bangkok to the Artist's
House and search for
your next clue.

The long tail boat is parked at pier 2 at the Yodpiman pier (6km).

Teams leave the caturday cat cafe in the following order:
 1. Karen & Bert
 2. Zed & Shabbir
 3. Sam & Paul
 4. Andrea & Ebonie
 5. Kenneth & Ryan
 6. Adam & Andrea
 7. Korey & Ivana

Adam & Andrea and Korey & Ivana go for the fast forward. Kenneth & Ryan also initially go for it but change their mind when they reread the clue and decide to go for the route info instead.

Korey & Ivana get dropped off at a different stadium in the same complex (200m or so from the right place). Meanwhile Adam & Andrea arrive at the right fast forward location.
"We played soccer when we were kids, throughout high school. This is right up our alley", Andrea has confidence
"This isn't too easy", Adam after trying a few times
After trying for a while Adam & Andrea manage to get the ball into one of the hoops and win the fast forward. They can now make their way directly to the pit stop at Wat Thewarat Kunchorn Worawihan temple. Korey & Ivana arrive just as Adam & Andrea are catching a taxi.

Teams reach the long tail boats in the following order:
 1(+0) Karen & Bert
 2(+0) Zed & Shabbir
 3(+0) Sam & Paul
4(+3) Korey & Ivana, after trying to go for the fast forward
 5(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 5(-1) Andrea & Ebonie

"This is unreal, absolutely amazing", Sam is excited during the boat ride
"Good new is, we're not last", Korey when they arrive at the Artist's house

The clue at the Artist's house reads:
Quote
ROUTE INFO

It's Showtime!

Put on a puppet show
and entertain the guests
of the Artist's House to
receive your next clue.

NOTE: You MAY NOT talk
at any time during your
performance.

Teams must learn a puppet show routine and then perform it. It takes three people to operate the puppet so a local is helping them. The catch this time is both that people have to work in sync to control the puppet and that teams must stay completely silent during the performance.

Zed & Shabbir struggle with this task. Or rather they did not read their clue carefully enough so they missed the part about being silent during the performance.
"As long as we talk out loud what the steps are I think we'll be fine", Shabbir
Finally, after having failed eight times, they reread their clue and notice this crucial detail.

"Bert and I do community theater", Karen think they should have an easy time here

Teams complete this task in the following order:
1(+2) Sam & Paul, on their 1st attempt
2(-1) Karen & Bert, on their 1st attempt
3(+2) Andrea & Ebonie, on their 1st attempt
4(+1) Kenneth & Ryan, on their 1st attempt
5(-1) Korey & Ivana, on their 3rd attempt
6(-4) Zed & Shabbir, on their 9th attempt

The next clue is a detour: Bling it or Shred it.

In "Bling it" teams must make their way to a temple and pick up a tuk-tuk. They must then ride in this to nearby place. Here there are two other blinged out tuk-tuks. They must compare these two and see which decorations are identical on both. They must then go to two different markets and buy these decorations and apply them to their own tuk-tuk.

One of the pieces of bling seems to be the small toy they got from Jon at the start of this leg.

In "Shred it" teams must make their way to the Flow house in downtown Bangkok. This is a man-made surfing house where both team members must face the artificial wave and grab a hanging flag.

"We're going to the surfing challenge and neither of us have ever surfed before", Sam
"I have worked at an indoor surfing pool, I practice there all the time. I feel like this challenge was made for me", Ebonie
"This is the first time we're in last place", Zed after they leave the puppet theater

Zed & Shabbir try their hand at surfing. Zed has no problems with the
task but Shabbir struggles.
"I've take so many falls, my body is aching", Shabbir can't go on much longer
So they switch to the bling detour.
"This day couldn't have gone any worse for us", Shabbir

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
 1(+0) Sam & Paul, surf
 2(+1) Andrea & Ebonie, surf
 3(+1) Kenneth & Ryan, surf
 4(-2) Karen & Bert, bling
 5(+0) Korey & Ivana, bling
6(+0) Zed & Shabbir, started surf but switched to bling

Andrea & Ebonie reach the temple just before Sam & Paul. The latter are in full competition mode and run ahead through the temple. Unfortunately they are going too fast and they run past the doorway leading to the courtyard where Jon is waiting so the girls can squeak by in the last moment.

Korey & Ivana are unlucky and their taxi drives 45 minutes in the wrong directions on their way to the pit stop. So they are feeling a bit down when they finally reach the temple where Jon awaits.
"The thunder is very appropriate right now", Ivana comments on the weather

Teams reach Jon and the pit stop in the following order:
1(+5) Adam & Andrea, win a 14 day trip to Asia.
 2(+1) Andrea & Ebonie
 3(-1) Sam & Paul
 4(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 5(+0) Karen & Bert

7(+0) Zed & Shabbir, are eliminated

way to the Ottawa 2017
Cauldron and search for
your next clue.

You have one loonie on your BMO CashBack

Caution: Double U-Turn
Ahead!

At the airport Adam & Andrea talk to Sam & Paul and Andrea & Ebonie. They form an U-turn alliance and decide that they will U-turn the other teams.

All teams travel on the same flight to Ontario, via Hong Kong and Toronto.

Once they land teams must make their way to City Hall where the Mayor will give them their next clue. They reach him in the following order:
 1. Korey & Ivana
 2. Kenneth & Ryan
 3. Andrea & Ebonie
 ?. Adam & Andrea
 ?. Karen & Bert
 ?. Sam & Paul

This clue directs teams to Hog's Back Falls. Here they will find a fleet of sponsor cars. Using the surround vision technology in the cars teams must park five of them in the marked spots to form one letter of the word CANADA.

The task seems fairly easy. But I think the editors left a lot on the cutting room floor. For example when Korey & Ivana park their last car we see that three of their other cars are parked with at least one wheel on or outside the markings. But in the final aerial shot they are all within their markings. So I assume they had to move those cars, which probably explains why they dropped some placements.

Teams complete this task in the following order:
 1(+1) Kenneth & Ryan
 2(+1) Andrea & Ebonie
 3(-2) Korey & Ivana
 4(+?) Adam & Andrea
 5(+?) Sam & Paul
 6(+?) Karen & Bert

ROAD BLOCK

Who's ready to let it
ride?

In this road block contestants must visit the RCMP Musical Ride. They will each be given a horse which they must carefully groom from the front to, and including, the butt. Then they must tack their steed to the precise standards of the RCMP. Finally they can mount up and ride a short distance to receive their next clue.

During the ride they have two experienced riders flanking them and their horse. Probably to make things look good and to keep any mishaps from happening.

On their way to the road block Andrea & Ebonie just follow Kenneth & Ryan.
"Andrea & Ebonie are always following us in vehicles", Kenneth & Ryan are not happy

"That is a horse", Korey had a knack for stating the obvious, he probably meant that there is a lot of horse to the horse he has to groom

"Let's hope people like us enough to not U-turn us", Sam fidgets while he waits for Paul as they are last

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):

2(+0)Andrea* & Ebonie (3-2)
3(+1)Adam* & Andrea   (3-2)

DETOUR

Detour: "Tiptoe through
the Tulips" or "Get the
Picture"

Tiptoe through the
Tulips: Construct a
flower cart and fill it with
an arrangement of Tulips
to receive your next clue

...

The tulip detour takes place in the Commissioners park (17min 12km). Here teams must assemble a flower cart and then recreate a tulip display. The tulip bouquets they need can be found in buckets placed throughout the park.

The picture detour takes place at the Canada Council art bank (9min 4km). Here teams must select a binder listing 20 different works of art. They must then use a database to locate these works of art in the 36'000 sq feet warehouse, and photograph each of them.

Everybody selects the tulip detour. But first they have to drive there, which seems to be not that easy. Andrea & Ebonie try their usual follow Kenneth & Ryan strategy. But they guys have grown irritated by this and manages to loose the girls by a red light. But the joke is on them because in the end the girls arrive at the park before the boys.

Sam & Paul are shown asking a local for directions, and that seems to be smart because they are the first to arrive.

It seems as if the picture detour was fairly quick.

Teams arrive to the tulip detour in the following order:
 1(+5) Sam & Paul
 2(+0) Andrea & Ebonie
 3(+2) Karen & Bert
 4(-3) Kenneth & Ryan
 5(-2) Adam & Andrea
 6(-2) Korey & Ivana

"Everyone must have picked the other detour", Sam & Paul arrive first at the tulip detour
"Oh, this is easy Paul", Sam looks at the example flower cart

 3(-1) Andrea & Ebonie, tulip
 4(+1) Adam & Andrea, picture
 5(-1) Kenneth & Ryan, tulip

for your next clue.

Caution: Double U-turn
Ahead!

Here Andrea & Ebonie have serious problems finding their way. They get very lost and loose a lot of time.
"Lost is our middle name today", Andrea of Andrea & Ebonie

Teams arrive at the market (13min 6km) and the U-turn board in the following order:
 1(+0) Karen & Bert
 2(+0) Sam & Paul, U-turns Kenneth & Ryan
 3(+1) Adam & Andrea
 4(+1) Korey & Ivana, U-turns Andrea & Ebonie
5(+0) Kenneth & Ryan, as Korey & Ivan are busy U-turning
 6(-3) Andrea & Ebonie

"A blank U-turn board! This is the greatest feeling ever", Paul
"We've been waiting 6 legs to do that", Paul after they U-turned Kenneth & Ryan

At the U-turn board Adam & Andrea are surprised that Andrea & Ebonie haven't U-turned another team. They do not know that the girls are seriously lost and haven't been here yet. Adam & Andrea fret about this for a while but eventually decide that since the girls didn't honor their alliance and U-turned another team then they do not need to do so either.
"They left a while ago, but they could've gotten lost, bad decision on our part?", Andrea has second thoughts as they drive away

The clue here directs teams to drive themselves to the Canadian museum of history and search inside the main entrance for their next clue.

As Kenneth & Ryan leave the U-turn board Ryan spot his brother walking on the street.
"We just saw Johnny mustard", Kenneth
This is not as much of a coincidence as one might think. Johnny lives in Ottawa and a local TV station had published pictures of the U-turn board the day before so he knew they would be in the area.

Teams arrive at the museum in the following order:
 1(+1) Sam & Paul

 5(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 6(+0) Andrea & Ebonie

In this task contestants will each be given a Canadian citizenship test. All tests differ slightly. They must answer at least 15 of 20 questions correctly to pass. They have to redo the test until they earn a passing score.

Teams can also examine the, huge, history exhibition which I assume holds some of the answers.

We learn that Ivana's parents had to take this test when they immigrated from Bosnia as she was 12.

"It's challenging because I don't know what I don't know", Bert struggles with the test
"Who made the Canadian National Anthem? Céline Dion?, Ryan

Andrea & Ebonie arrive to the museum as Ryan is still taking the test, this adds a bit of pressure to the room.

Teams pass the test in the following order:
1(+2) Adam & Andrea, Adam on his 2nd attempt
2(-1) Sam & Paul, Paul on his 8th attempt
3(+1) Korey & Ivana, Korey on his 4th and Ivana on her 6th attempt
4(-2) Karen & Bert, Bert on his 14th attempt
5(+0) Kenneth & Ryan (number of attempts not shown)
6(+0) Andrea & Ebonie (number of attempts not shown)

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 5, Episode 7, "Break time for Korey"
Film date: probably 2017-05-11 2017-05-12

The last pit stop was at the Canadian museum of history in Ottawa. Teams are released somewhere else in Ottawa in the following order:
1.Adam & Andrea   07:52
2.Sam & Paul      08:32+0:40
3.Korey & Ivana   10:00+2:08
4.Karen & Bert    10:02+2:10
5.Kenneth & Ryan  10:25+2:33
6.Andrea & Ebonie 11:14+3:24

ROUTE INFO

Fly to Western
Newfoundland &
Labrador!

Once there, find your
next clue in the 2017
Chevrolet Spark.

You have $450 on your
BMO CashBack
MasterCard for this leg
of the Race.

We get to see the first five teams sitting at the airport talking about being the final five when Andrea & Ebonie arrive. Not everybody is happy that they are still in the race (1/5 are better odds than 1/6). And there are some hard feelings about the U-turn.
"I'm just having a hard time faking it in front of fake people", Ebonie

All teams fly on the same flight from Ottawa to Deer Lake. Once they land they can jump into one of the sponsor cars and drive themselves to Corner Brook (57km 40min). Here they have to find specific BMO branch where they will receive their next clue.

At this point in the leg there is something the producers do not show us. Teams are leaving the airport closely following each other and it is getting dark outside. When we next time see the teams it is light and they are spread out. I suspect they had to go somewhere where they got departure times for the next day and had to spend the night.

Teams arrive at the bank in the following order:
 1. Kenneth & Ryan
 2. Sam & Paul
 3. Korey & Ivana
 4. Adam & Andrea
 5. Andrea & Ebonie
 6. Karen & Bert

At the bank each team receive a video greeting from their loved ones at home. The only notable thing here is that the loved ones including Kenneth's dog and that Sam is told that he got accepted at medical school.

In the video the family has been instructed to tell the teams to drive themselves to the Discovery Center and Gros Morne National Park.

At the Discovery center (118km 1h28min) teams find a detour clue in the following order:
 1(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 2(+0) Sam & Paul, right after #1
 3(+1) Adam & Andrea
 4(-1) Korey & Ivana
 5(+1) Karen & Bert
 6(-1) Andrea & Ebonie

Here is also where Andrea & Ebonie find their speed bump. They must use bow and arrows to hit a target. Once they have scored a total of 25 points they can move on.
"There's a pose in Yoga called Warrior 2", Andrea know the archery pose

The others can go directly for the detour:
Quote
DETOUR

Detour: "Find Your Dory" or "Family Story"

Find your Dory: Put out
to sea in a traditional
dory and use the map to
find your next clue.

Family Story: Using
stories told by the gods,
correctly fill out a Norse
mythology family tree to
receive your next clue.

The trick with the dory is that teams must row the boat. One would think, after seeing lots of Amazing Race seasons, that teams might have realized that rowing is good skill to have on the race. But alas not, the number of different styles of propelling the boat is great.
"I have a bit of rowing experience", Paul stands out from the crowd

"Sam & Paul are in front of us and we're gonna go catch them", Kenneth & Paul
Kenneth & Ryan quickly have to shelve their plans to catch Sam & Paul since it turns out they do not know how to row. After a while they settle on the technique where they paddle the boat like a canoe, this is very slow.

"What are oars", Ivana (in the car)
"We've got a system, you're doing great", Ivana as Korey rows the boat

When they get to the clues Korey have to take a call from mother nature. This seems to take a long time.
"Break time for Korey", Ivana gets the title

The family story detour takes place in a recreated Viking settlement (that is production put up some tents and other props). The family member names can be found written on flat stones which must be hung on a family tree. One trick is that they are many more names than is needed.
"Those are not easy names to remember. There's no Bob, Bill or Marge here", Andrea

Teams complete this detour in the following order:
 1(+1) Sam & Paul, dory
 2(+1) Adam & Andrea, story
 3(-2) Kenneth & Ryan, dory
 4(+1) Karen & Bert, story
 5(-1) Korey & Ivana, dory
 6(+0) Andrea & Ebonie, dory

The next clue is a face off. Teams have to make their way to Corner Brook Center Bowl and play five pin bowling against each other. Each match consists of 10 rounds and the team with the highest score win and can continue racing. The loser plays the next waiting team and so on. The last team to lose a match have to wait out a penalty before they can move on.

Sam & Paul are first to arrive so they have to wait for the next team to catch up before they can play them. Adam & Andrea encounter Kenneth & Ryan outside and they race each other to be the next team to the face off. Adam & Andrea win this race by a whisker.

We learn that Adam had a lot of bowling parties when he was small. These do however unfortunately not translate into any skill now.

"We can win this, easy", Kenneth has confidence

Andrea & Ebonie arrive here after the first two teams have won their games and left.

Karen & Bert almost win their match against Kenneth & Ryan but Burt fails completely in his last frame which allows the boys to beat them. He redeems himself in the next game where he gets a strike just as they need one.

Teams leave the bowling in the following order:
1(+0) Sam & Paul, won against Adam & Andrea
2(+0) Adam & Andrea, won against Kenneth & Ryan
3(+0) Kenneth & Ryan, won against Karen & Bert
4(+0) Karen & Bert, won against Korey & Ivana
5(+0) Korey & Ivana, won against Andrea & Ebonie
 6(+0) Andrea & Ebonie

ROAD BLOCK

Who's da Bomb?

In this road block teams must make their way to Swirsky's comedy club (2km 5min). Here racers must learn 12 jokes from a list of more than 40. Then they must tell them on a stage in front of a local audience. If they fail they will be pelted with produce (lettuce and sliced tomatoes) before they can exit the stage and go to the back of the line to try again.

The jokes sheet starts like this:
Quote
1) 247 car accidents a year involve moose. No one knows how they pass the drivers
exam.

2) Canada has more donut shops per square capita than anywhere else and hence,
more police officers per square capita.

3) Scientists say the higher you're IQ the more you dream. This explains why
creative people dream often and Donald Trump can't spell dream.

4)  woman's hearts beats faster than a man, mostly because she's annoyed at her
man.

5) By the age of 60 most people will have lost half of their taste buds, but it evens
out as they double the volume on their televisions

6) Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to boil half a gallon of water.
Women's feet give off enough cold to freeze that boiling water.

7) A beaver led a heard of cattle at a ranch in Saskatchewan recently "During these
tough economic times I've had to get a second job like everyone else' said the
beaver. "Being a nickel model wasn't enough to make my "dam"
payments".

8 ) Newfoundland's pretty windy. Earlier I saw a sea gull flying with its eyes closed.

9) I just got back form the Viking settlement in L'anse Ax Meadows where it's
evident that the Vikings were Newfoundland's angriest mummer's.

...

"This could be a ruthless crowd", Paul see the buckets with produce standing by the audience
"Oh my god, so bad but so good", Andrea (Adam's partner) reads the jokes

Here Andrea (of Andrea & Ebonie) actually manage to make an attempt before Ivana. Unfortunately for her she bombs and have to go back to study some more.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Sam* & Paul      (3-3)
2(+1)Kenneth* & Ryan  (3-3)
3(-1)Adam & Andrea*   (3-3)

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 5, Episode 8, "Can I see your Kuna?"
Film date: probably 2017-05-12 - 2017-05-14

The last pit stop was at the Captain James Cook historic site near Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Teams depart from somewhere else, probably in Corner Brook, in the following order:
1.Sam & Paul      23:57
2.Kenneth & Ryan  00:52+0:55
3.Adam & Andrea   01:34+1:37
4.Karen & Bert    01:36+1:39
5.Korey & Ivana   01:53+1:56

Route info: Fly to Panama City, Panama. Teams get $550 for this leg of the race.

At the airport we learn that it is mothers day in Canada and Karen is the only mother remaining in the race. Everybody congratulates her and she misses the kids.

All teams are on the same flight to Panama City from Deer Lake via Toronto. Once they land they must make their way to the Biomuseo. This museum was designed by Canadian Architect Frank Gehry. At the museum teams must search for their next clue near the white wolf.

This clue is in an ordinary clue box without it stand. Instead the box is placed on the floor where it blends in with the base of the exhibit so it is not entirely trivial to spot. But teams find it and the clue within in the following order:

 1. Kenneth & Ryan
 2. Sam & Paul
 3. Karen & Bert
 4. Korey & Ivana
 5. Adam & Andrea

This clue directs teams to Paseo Esteban Huertas Casco Viejo where they must search the seawall for their next clue. Teams change places a lot on the way here. Taxis pass each other and Sam & Paul get impatient an get out to run. Karen & Bert trust their driver and stay in their taxi. In the end they find the clue box here in the following order:
 1(+2) Karen & Bert
 2(-1) Kenneth & Ryan
 3(+2) Adam & Andrea
 4(-2) Sam & Paul
 5(-1) Korey & Ivana

Quote
ROAD BLOCK

Who's ready to meet
their match?

Inside the clue reads:
Quote
Pick out a traditional
Kuna mola. Then search
the streets of Casco
Viejo to find the Kuna
woman wearing the
exact matching mola to
receive your next clue.

Each contestants must select a Mola, an elaborate embroidered cloth panel. They must then search the neighborhood for a woman of the Kuna tribe wearing a blouse with a matching pattern. The producers have helpfully made sure that lots of Kuna women are present and they all wear colorful blouses, but only one wears a matching one. All the molas have different patterns so finding the matching one is fairly simple. There is no matching of colors or minute details needed.

The first challenge seems to be to find the marked kiosk where they cal select their mola. For some reason Karen has a hard time finding this.

"After a while all the molas start looking the same", Korey
"I design patterns for a living, and Adam is doing this detour", Andrea
"I try to eliminate some but it is hard because they keep constantly walking around", Ryan
"Can I see your Kuna?", Ryan gets the title (and is wrong, she is of the Kuna tribe and wears a mola)

Once they find a Kuna woman wearing a matching mola they must bring her back to the stand.
"This is the longest walk of my life. The woman is walking very slowly next to me", Paul

After finally finding the marked Kiosk Karen has a hard time finding The Kuna women. She keep searching the market by the seawall instead of making her way into the old town where the women are.
"It can't be just on the regular street. I know it can't", Karen is wrong
Karen keep searching but doesn't find anything. She is considering taking the penalty when she goes back to Bert. He comforts her and reminds her to read the clue. And there it clearly says where the women are.

Ryan is looking for a pattern with four butterflies. But he can not find anybody with such a mola. So he brings back the lady he finds who has two butterflies instead. And that turns out to be correct.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+3)Sam & Paul*      (3-4)
2(+1)Adam* & Andrea   (4-3)
3(-1)Kenneth & Ryan*  (3-4)
4(+1)Korey* & Ivana   (4-3)
5(-4)Karen* & Bert    (4-3)

DETOUR

Detour: "Up for a Drink"
or "Down for the Count"

Up for a Drink: From a
list of flavours, identify
exactly which one is in
each beer sample to
receive your next clue.

Down for the Count:
Enter the ring and
successfully execute a
series of combination
punches to receive your
next clue.

NOTE: There are limited
stations at both detours.

The beer detour takes place at Hotel las Clementinas. Teams must correctly identify the characteristic ingredient in 5 different beers. They are given a list of 14 different ingredients. It seems the correct answer is: Vanilla, Salt, Chocolate, Mango and Orange.

Teams are given five glasses of beer, water, crackers and a spit bucket. They can get the glasses refilled at any time. And Sam & Paul use that right liberally. We do not get to see anybody use the spit bucket.

In down for the count teams must make their way to a boxing gym. Here they must suit up and learn a series of six different boxing combinations. The combinations are listed on the wall:
Quote
    Today's Routine
    Rutina de Hoy

Combo 1:
Left Jab / Left Jab / Right Cross

Combo 2:
Left Jab / Right Cross / Left Hook / Right Uppercut

Combo 3:
Left Jab / Right Cross / Left Hook / Right Cross

Combo 4:
Left Jab / Left Jab / Right Cross / Left Uppercut

Combo 5:
Right Cross / Left Hook / Right Cross

Combo 6:
Right Cross / Left Uppercut / Right Hook

The beer detour turns out to be very hard. So hard that every team which attempts it eventually switches to boxing.
"This is really good beer. And it is going down smooth", Sam & Paul
"I work as a chef. I love experiencing different beers, trying different flavors, I trust my pallet 100%", Kenneth
Sam & Paul get 4/5 on their first try (they are not told this) as does Kenneth & Ryan (they said Apple instead of Mango), but from there on their results get progressively worse.
"5 different beers, so many different flavors here on the table. And I have no idea what this word means", Adam holds up the "Cardamom" sign

Eventually Sam & Paul decide to cut their losses and switch. Adam & Andrea last a little longer before they also switch.
"We could figure this out", Kenneth want to stay with the beer
So Kenneth & Ryan stay a while longer but eventually they also give up and switch to Boxing.

Teams arrive at the boxing gym in the following order:
 1(+3) Korey & Ivana
 2(-1) Sam & Paul
 3(+2) Karen & Bert
 4(-2) Adam & Andrea
 5(-2) Kenneth & Ryan

Korey & Ivana feel confident going into the boxing detour since they are both personal trainers.
"I've punched Adam a few times growing up", Andrea
"That was exhausting. I don't think I have ever sweat this much in my entire life", Sam

We also learn that Bert is left handed. Therefore he started learning the combination using the wrong hands. Eventually they realize he has to do it exactly as written on the board so he has to relearn the routine.

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
 1(+0) Korey & Ivana, boxing
2(+0) Sam & Paul, started beer but switched to boxing
3(+1) Adam & Andrea, started beer but switched to boxing
4(+1) Kenneth & Ryan, started beer but switched to boxing
 5(-2) Karen & Bert, boxing

ROUTE INFO

Make your way to the
Sports Complex at
Escuela Dr. Belisario
Porras and search for
your next clue.

Teams arrive at the sports complex in the same order they left the detour.

Route Info

It's time to band
together!

Become Drum Majors
and lead the Banda de
Música Virgilio Escala
del Colegio Pedro Pablo
Sanchez on a musical
number.

Teams must now learn the drum major moves needed to lead this 120 piece band. That is both team members must learn the moves and will then perform them standing next to the real drum major in front of the band. The moves are complex and hard but the judging is fairly lax.

To start with teams must dress up in band uniforms. And there is only a restricted set of sizes available so Korey, who is a big guy, can not zip up his shirt and he can not get his feet all the way into the shoes.

To spare the musicians only the percussion section is playing as the contestants try to lead the band.

"Sweep the floor and make it twirl", Ivana describes some of the moves

"You can't fake your way through this challenge, it is tough", Ivana after failing once

We learn that Kenneth played the Clarinet in the Marching Band in High School.

This challenge seems hard and eventually all team arrive and are practicing next to each other.
"We have been here for hours. This challenge is the most frustrating challenge of the whole race", Ivana

Teams complete this task in the following order:
1(+1) Sam & Paul, on their first attempt
2(-1) Korey & Ivana, on their 3rd attempt
3(+2) Kenneth & Ryan, on their first attempt
4(-1) Karen & Bert, on their first attempt
5(-2) Adam & Andrea, on their 4th attempt

The next clue is a selfie with Jon in front of a set of giant colorful letters spelling PANAMÁ.

It turns out that there are two PANAMÁ signs in Panama City. If you look at the details in the photo, there are skyscrapers in the picture they get, you can figure out which one they need to go to. But the racers have no chance of knowing this and not all taxi drivers realize this either.

Korey & Ivana are not far behind Sam & Paul when they leave the drum major task. So it is down to a taxi race. Unfortunately for Korey & Ivana their driver take them to the wrong sign. And it is about a 17 minutes drive (11km) to the right one.

Karen & Bert are also taken to the wrong sign which seals their fate.

Teams reach Jon at the pit stop in the following order:
1(+0) Sam & Paul, win a trip to New Orleans
 2(+1) Kenneth & Ryan
 3(+2) Adam & Andrea
 4(-2) Korey & Ivana
5(-1) Karen & Bert, are saved by a non elimination

Racing report
Amazing Race Canada Season 5, Episode 9, "It's Like Finding Waldo In a Bunch of Waldos"
Film date: probably 2017-05-15 - 2017-05-17

The last pit stop was at one of the big PANAMA signs in Panama City, Panama. Teams are released from the Miraflores locks (also in Panama City) in the following order:
1.Sam & Paul      11:51
2.Kenneth & Ryan  12:10+0:19
3.Adam & Andrea   12:29+0:38
4.Korey & Ivana   12:52+1:01
5.Karen & Bert    13:47+1:56

The first route info directs teams to Regina, Saskatchewan. It also warns that there is a double U-turn ahead. Teams get USD460 for this leg of the race.

All teams are on the same flight to Regina via Toronto.

When they land they need to pick up a sponsor car. This is also where they will find their next clue.

Quote
ROUTE INFO

Rise and Shine!

Help BMO grant a wish
by serving breakfast to
the children of Douglas
Park Elementary School
to earn your next clue.

Teams arrive at the school in the following order:
 1. Sam & Paul
 2. Adam & Andrea
 3. Korey & Ivana
 4. Kenneth & Ryan
 5. Karen & Bert

The challenge for the teams is to squeeze orange juice. They are given a bunch of oranges and a manual juicer and must squeeze enough orange juice to fill two jugs. They must then pour this for a bunch of kids.

 "I'm feeling the squeeze", Bert

Here we also learn that Andrea is a teacher.

Teams complete this task in the following order:
 1(+0) Sam & Paul
 2(+1) Korey & Ivana
 3(+1) Kenneth & Ryan
 4(-2) Adam & Andrea
 5(+0) Karen & Bert

The next route info directs teams to Aulie Farms in Rouleau.

"We have to be first all day, because if Sam & Paul are ahead of us they're gonna U-turn us first", Ryan

Andrea also frets about the U-turn and thinks it is very important to not get lost.

Karen & Bert leave the school last but feel confident because they have a good map and have found a small road which looks like a shortcut.

Teams arrive to the farm (52km 39min) in the following order:
 1(+0) Sam & Paul
 2(+3) Karen & Bert, just after #1
 3(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 4(+0) Adam & Andrea
 5(-3) Korey & Ivana

Here Karen & Bert find their speed bump. They must clean up a horse stall. That is remove all the manure and spread new hay. Nothing complicated, just some good old fashioned physical labor.
"Hello, It's ripe in here", Karen

Detour: "The Cart" or "The Horse"

In the cart teams must figure out how to maneuver a huge conveyor machine into position over the grain cart. They must then use this conveyor to load 1000lb of canola seeds into the cart.

In the horse teams must become auctioneers and sell a horse. One team member must be the auctioneer and the other act as the bid catcher. The auctioneer must learn the history of the horse and present it and call out the asking price. The bid catcher must use hand signals to indicate the given bids. The bidding starts at $3000 or $4000 and they must get at least $6000 for the horse.

The auction is completely made up. Bidders will continue to bid until they reach $6000. The only requirement is that the auctioneer always raise the bid by $100 and that the bid catcher uses the hand signals. If they fail any of these requirements the auction is aborted and they have to go back and practice.

The cart detour is pretty straightforward but takes longer. The biggest difficulty is finding the button which starts the conveyor belt. There seems to be only three conveyors available but I guess that once a team is done the producers reset and bring it back to its starting position.

"I have no idea even how to turn this thing on", Paul is baffled by the conveyor
"It's gotta be simple, right? What that? Not a button", Andrea tries to figure out how to start the conveyor belt

As Karen & Bert leave the detour Sam & Paul and Adam & Andrea come back. Bert realize they have been U-turned.

"Hey guys, be nice to me, I'm a city girl", Andrea to the auction crowd

Teams complete the detour in the following order:
1(+2) Kenneth & Ryan, horse, on their 1st attempt
2(+3) Korey & Ivana, horse, on their 2nd attempt
 3(-2) Sam & Paul, cart
 4(+0) Adam & Andrea, cart
 5(-3) Karen & Bert, cart
4(-1) Sam & Paul, horse, on their 1st attempt
5(-1) Adam & Andrea, horse, on their 2nd attempt

Teams must now make their way to the Dog River Hotel in Rouleau. Here they will find the double U-turn board.
"Sam & Paul, you're getting U-turned", Ryan wants to pay back for the previous U-turn

 1(+0) Kenneth & Ryan, U-turns Sam & Paul
 2(+0) Korey & Ivana, U-turns Adam & Andrea
 3(+0) Sam & Paul
 4(+0) Adam & Andrea
 5(+0) Karen & Bert

"The Giver boys just U-turned us. No surprise, we're gonna go and kill the other detour", Paul

The next clue directs teams to Moose Jaw, SK, where they will need to find Crescent park. They arrive in the park in the following order:
 1(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 2(+3) Karen & Bert
 3(-1) Korey & Ivana
 4(+0) Sam & Paul
 5(+0) Adam & Andrea

Here they must create a piece of modern art using 250 cans of sponsor soup. The motif is a replica of a maple leaf. Once they are done a superfan will give them their next clue.

One extra requirements is that the labels should all be facing backwards and have the can should have correct side up. Kory & Ivana is the only team seen failing this when they leave one can standing upside down. Unfortunately for them this is near the bottom of the sculpture and most of it collapses when they try to fix it.

"That my friends is karma", Andrea when Korey & Ivanas sculpture collapses
"Stupid challenge", Adam when their sculpture falls

Adam seems to loose his spark once their sculpture collapses just as Korey & Ivana is close to complete theirs. Andrea has to take on the big sister role (even tough she is younger).

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
 1(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 2(+0) Karen & Bert
 3(+1) Sam & Paul
 4(-1) Korey & Ivana
 5(+0) Adam & Andrea

The next clue tells them to drive to Grandpa's Garden where they must search for their next clue.

Teams arrive to this clue box in the same order they left the soup can task.

Road block: "Who think's it is good to be the queen?"

In this road block racers have to don protective clothing and then search through a set of honeycombs with over 20,000 bees for the one and only queen.
"This challenge could totally be luck of the draw", Kenneth
"There's a lot of buzz about the job we're doing here", Bert
"Cloud that beee her?", Bert is a fountain of one-liners
"It's like finding Waldo in a bunch of Waldos", Andrea gets the title

This challenge is hard and depends quite a lot on. The queen is just a little bigger than the rest of the bees and there are lots of honeycombs to search.

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+2)Sam* & Paul      (4-4)
2(-1)Kenneth* & Ryan  (4-4)
3(-1)Karen & Bert*    (4-4)
4(+0)Korey & Ivana*   (4-4)
5(+0)Adam & Andrea*   (4-4)

Route info: Drive yourselves to the home of the Snowbirds and search for Jon and your next pit stop.

Teams must now make their way to the 15 Wing Moose Jaw Canadian Armed Forces Base

"We're hoping that Korey & Ivana are on their way to another province right now", Andrea

"Whats a hangar? Is that a building?", Ivana (in the car)
"That's where the planes hang", Korey

Teams reach the pit stop in the following order:
1(+0) Sam & Paul, win a trip to Costa Rica
 2(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 3(+0) Karen & Bert
 4(+0) Korey & Ivana

The last pit stop was at 15 Wing Moose Jaw Canadian Armed Forces Base in Saskatchewan. Teams are released from a park in Regina in the following order:
1.Sam & Paul      13:26
2.Kenneth & Ryan  13:41+0:15
3.Karen & Bert    14:05+0:39

ROUTE INFO

All Aboard!

In this 150 challenge,
match each Group of
Seven painting to its art
critique while riding the
Agawa Canyon Tour
Train to receive your
next clue.

Teams must travel to an intersection and board the train. On the train they will find the titles and descriptions of 14 group of seven paintings. For example:
Quote
"THE WHITE PINE" 1948
A GREEN TREE STANDS BOLDLY IN THE MIDDLE OF A BEIGE AND GREY ROCK IN
THIS WORK. A LARGE DARK GREY MOUNTAIN FILLS THE BACKGROUND.

In the next car they can find prints of each. They must use these and the descriptions to find and memorize the title of each painting. When they are ready racers must enter the last car where their knowledge will be put to the test when they have to identify all 14 paintings.

The train ride takes 30 minutes and if they haven't passed the task by then they have to ride again.

When teams arrive at the intersection they see a sign that the train departs at 12:03. Sam & Paul have trouble navigating but arrives just in time for the first departure.

The judging is fairly strict. For example a common mistake is to call one paining "White Pine" when the real name is "The White Pine", and you do get rejected if you forget the "The".

Teams complete this challenge in the following order:
 1. Sam & Paul, just before the trains starts the second trip
The other teams have to take another ride which puts them 30 minutes behind
 2. Kenneth & Ryan
 3. Karen & Bert
 4. Korey & Ivana, got it just before the train left again

DETOUR

Detour: "Alpac-It" or "I'll
Cast It"

Alpac-It: Halter two
Alpacas and lead them
through an obstacle
course under the time
limit to receive your next
clue.

I'll Cast It: Cast a fishing
rod and hit three targets
in the water to receive
your next clue.

The Alpaca detour takes place on mockin'bird hill pioneer farm. Here racers must choose and halter two alpacas and then lead them through an obstacle course in under 3 minutes. Production has provided a bunch of kids which act as spectators which lends a festive feel to this detour.

The fishing detour takes place in Kinsmen lake. Teams must put on hip-waders and enter the water and cast a fishing fly into three different targets floating on the water.

"You guys are kind of freaky", Paul meets the Alpacas

The Alpaca detour is fairly easy IF you get a cooperating Alpaca. There is plenty of time to complete the course. And it turns out that you are allowed to switch Alpacas between attempts.

Sam & Paul have a 30 minute lead and seem to have no big issues on the detour. As they are driving away form it they pass Kenneth & Ryan who are on their way to the detour. So it took Sam & Paul just under 30 minutes to complete the detour.

"Fishing is one of my favorite pastimes", Korey
"Neither of us fish, but we figure it is like target practice", Karen
"We don't have any control over these animals", Ryan (which is why you should avoid detours with animals)

Kenneth & Ryan have a very hard time with this detour. They change Alpacas multiple times until they finally find a pair which manages to complete the course without lying down or knocking something over.

Teams complete this detour in the following order:
1(+0) Sam & Paul, Alpaca on their 2nd attempt
 2(+2) Korey & Ivana, Fishing
 3(+0) Karen & Bert, Fishing
4(-2) Kenneth & Ryan, Alpaca on their 13th attempt

FACE OFF

Let's hit the ice for
another Face Off!

Meet at centre ice and
beat your opponent in
an original Canadian
game called Crokicurl.

This version  of Crockicurl is played with curling stones on ice. Teams take turns and the goal is to have as many stones as close to the center as possible. One special rule is that if the other team have any stones in the points zone, you must hit at least one of them.

As usual teams must win their match to be allowed to get their next clue. And the last teams must wait for a hourglass to run out (probably 20 minutes).

Today's surprising fact is that Sam's grandfather was a famous curler. And the judge actually knew him.

Sam & Paul arrive first so they get to choose if they want to have the first stone or not in their first match. They select to have the first stone, which seems to be a mistake. There is an advantage in having the last stone as this can not be knocked out by the opposing team.

Teams leave the face-off in the following order:
1(+1) Korey & Ivana, win against Sam & Paul
2(-1) Sam & Paul, win against Karen & Bert
3(+1) Kenneth & Ryan, win against Karen & Bert
 4(-1) Karen & Bert

ROAD BLOCK

Who's counting on their
partner for this
Road Block?

The additional info reads:
Quote
ROAD BLOCK

Count the correct
number of each species
of cockroach crawling
around your partner to
receive your next clue.

Teams must make their way to Mill Market and find the insectarium. There the non-participating team member must put their head into a transparent box (with air holes). They will then get a bunch (about 43) of giant cockroaches dumped on them. The team member doing the road block must then correctly count the number of cockroaches of each of four different species.

Teams arrive to the road block in the same order they left the face off. But this time we can calculate the time differences between them.
 1(+0) Korey & Ivana
 2(+0) Sam & Paul, +0:24
 3(+0) Kenneth & Ryan, +0:36
 4(+0) Karen & Bert +0:55

"They're crawling on you", Ivana reads the additional info
"Ohhh ****", Korey is not happy about this

"I have become one with the cockroaches", Korey have been in there for about 30 minutes
"I'm terrified", Bert does not like insects

As Korey & Ivana are preparing to leaver Bert pleads that they should tell Karen the numbers.
"We love you guys, good luck", Ivana does not tell them

Bert is having a really hard time with this task. He has no hair so he feels very well when the giant cockroaches walk on his head. He keep trying to shake them off, which just makes it that much harder for Karen to count them.

After the other teams have left Karen asks Bert if he wants to take the penalty, but he gathers his strength and tell her:
"Lets' just get it right and and let's go", Bert wants to continue

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+1)Sam* & Paul      (5-4)
2(-1)Korey & Ivana*   (4-5)After more than an hour
3(+0)Kenneth* & Ryan  (5-4)
4(+0)Karen* & Bert    (5-4)After just over an hour

Route info: Drive yourself to Bellevue park and search Topsail island for Jon and your next pit stop.

Teams reach Jon and the pit stop in the following order:
1(+0) Sam & Paul, win a trip to Cape Town
 2(+0) Korey & Ivana
 3(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
4(+0) Karen & Bert, are eliminated

outside the terminal and
search around it for your
next clue.

You have $850 on your

ROAD BLOCK

Who's going to fall for
this road block?

In this road block one team member must climb down a cargo net to retrieve their next clue. The catch is that the cargo net hangs from a bridge on top of the Montmorency falls. Once they have the clue they must climb back up again.

The bottom of the cargo net is secured by a steel wire so the net is fairly stable. This make the task a lot easier, but it is still quite exhausting.

Sam & Paul is the only team which tells their taxi to go directly to the top of the falls. The other arrive at the bottom, which is where most tourists go. Both teams there take a look at the long lines to the gondola and figure out that you can drive up there and that it is faster.

 "This is absolutely insane", Sam

Sam & Paul have a fairly big lead here. As they are leaving the road block location they meet the other teams who are just arriving.

Ryan and Korey start neck and neck but Ryan has more energy for the climb back up again. In fact Korey is so tired that he looses his grip when he's almost at the top. The safety lines catch him and he doesn't really fall any distance, but still he has to get back under control again.
"I think his muscles gave out. I can feel his pain right now", Ivana

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1.Sam & Paul*      (5-5)
2.Kenneth & Ryan*  (5-5)
3.Korey* & Ivana   (5-5)

The next clue directs teams downtown to Place de Bordeaux. Here one team member must jump onto a bike rickshaw. The other team member must act as the dispatcher and direct their cycling partner. They must then pick up three different customers from different places and deliver them. The passengers are holding colored cards so that the rider know which passengers to pick up. The customers do not seem to say anything, instead it is the dispatcher who knows where to pick them up and where to deliver them.

The rider and the dispatcher can only communicate via a pair of walkie-talkies.

Sam & Paul must have lost some time getting here because Paul is still getting to know the bike when Kenneth & Ryan show up.

An additional difficulty in this task is that almost all street names are in French. And pronouncing them over the radio is hard.
"How do you say that?", Ryan just tried to pronounce a street
"I know he's over here somewhere but I have no idea where", Sam has trouble directing Paul

Teams complete the deliveries and return in the following order:
1(+0) Sam & Paul, Paul rode the rickshaw
2(+0) Kenneth & Ryan, Kenneth rode the rickshaw
3(+0) Korey & Ivana, Ivana rode the rickshaw

The next clue directs teams to the Carnaval de Québec warehouse. This is where the props for the winter festival are stored during the summer. Teams will have to search for one of three Bonhomme figures holding their next clue. The Bonhomme is the carnival mascot and there are lots of dolls and statues of him in the warehouse.

To make it more interesting one of the statues is no statue but rather a guy in a suite who chooses an appropriate moment to move and scare the racers.
 "Joyeux Carnaval!", The Bonhomme

Korey & Ivan arrive at the warehouse as Kenneth & Ryan are still searching for the clue.
"This is not funny", Ivana after she has recovered from the shock of a talking Bonhomme.

Teams find a Bonhomme with a clue in the following order:
 1(+0) Sam & Paul
 2(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 3(+0) Korey & Ivana

The next clue is just a box of chocolate bound with red and yellow bands. On the box you can read Erics Chocolat Frais. On the back it reads "Trade in for the next clue". Inside the box is a folder from the Chocolate museum.

In exchange for the small box of chocolate teams get a giant chocolate egg. Teams have to crack it to find the clue inside.

ROAD BLOCK

Who's about to wish they
had done the first road
block?

The team member who
did not perform the cargo
net road block MUST
attempt this road block.

This road block takes place at Observatoire de la capitale, which is the tallest building in town. The participating team member must scale this 31 stories high building. Jon say the have to pull themselves up the building. But in reality there is a motor which does most of the pulling. They must just keep an even pressure downwards on another rope to keep being pulled up.

Once at the top contestants must scan the city below to spot the location of their next clue. This is marked by a red and yellow piece of cloth on the roof of a building.

Teams arrive here in the same order they found the clue in the warehouse. And climbing the building seems to take about the same time for everybody.

Kenneth & Ryan arrive as Sam is almost at the top. And Sam is still looking for the clue when Kenneth reach the top.
"This is crazy hard", Sam is looking for the next clue

Sam and Kenneth spot the next clue almost simultaneously. Unfortunately for Kenneth what he spotted was the flag of the university. When he and Ryan arrive there they realize that he made a mistake and they go back to the Observatorie where Kenneth have to climb the side of the building again. This time he spot the right clue from the roof.

Meanwhile Ivana is searching the roof itself for the next clue. It takes a while of searching before she realize they clue is not on the roof but rather can be seen from the roof.
"I spent 15 minutes searching for the clue", Ivana

Teams complete this road block in the following order (* denotes team member doing the roadblock):
1(+0)Sam* & Paul      (6-5)
2(+1)Korey & Ivana*   (5-6)
3(-1)Kenneth* & Ryan  (6-5)

The next clue says "This one is puzzling" and directs teams to enter the library of the Morrin sector (which is right behind the clue box). Here they will find a giant (approximately 2mx2m) puzzle of Canada consisting of over 150 pieces as well as 10 challenge markers. They must first complete the puzzle and then figure out which 6 of the markers represent Canada 150 challenges which they did during the race and place them at the correct locations on the completed puzzle.

Kenneth & Ryan arrive last, but the other two teams are still here when they arrive. Sam & Paul and Korey & Ivana have adopted a strategy where they assemble parts of the puzzle on the floor and then transfer them to the big puzzle board. Kenneth & Ryan go directly for the board, and this seems to be a lot faster.

"Puzzles are supposed to be relaxing, this is the least relaxing puzzle ever", Sam feels the pressure
"Building those sections on the floor was a huge mistake", Sam realize they should have built on the board
"Canada's coming together like a piece of cake", Kenneth gets the title

From the editing it seems Kenneth & Ryan are the first to complete the puzzle. Now all they have to do is correctly place the six Canada 150 challenges. All the challenge markers are tasks they did on the race, but not all of the was labeled as Canada 150. Unfortunately Kenneth & Ryan have one of the challenges wrong so they are not done yet.

Meanwhile Sam & Paul are also complete the puzzle and are pretty sure they have 5 of the challenges down. They are trying to figure out which of Crokicurl, RCMP Musical Ride, Bonhomme, Morse Code and Canola is the last one. In the end they settle for Canola, which is right.

From what is shown it seems Korey & Ivana are way behind and have only completed about half their puzzle when Kenneth & Ryan leave.

Teams complete this task in the following order:
 1(+0) Sam & Paul
 2(+1) Kenneth & Ryan
 3(-1) Korey & Ivana

ROUTE INFO

At last, the end of the
race.

Make your way to le
Parc-des-Ancêtres on Île
d'Orléans and search for
Jon at the Finish Line!

Go, Go, Go!!!

Teams can now go to the finish line. This is a nail-biting taxi ride (30km 29min) away. As usual the editing tries to fool us into believing the second team is about to catch up.
"We went the completely opposite way", Paul when they took a wrong turn and had to ask for directions
"Sam & Paul, we're coming for you", Kenneth & Ryan have a driver who knows where the park is

Teams reach the finish line in the following order:
1(+0) Sam & Paul, win the cars, an around the world trip and $250,000 plus the title
 2(+0) Kenneth & Ryan
 3(+0) Korey & Ivana

"Gentlemen, 4 countries, 6 provinces, 17 cities and over 50,000km", Jon describes this race
"We just went on the adventure of a lifetime", Ryan
