‘Amazing Race’ Creators on Surprise Renewal, Emmys and Plans for the Future (Exclusive)

Executive Producer Bertram van Munster “is already in the office with a map on the wall. He’s starting to point at countries,” co-Creator/EP Elise Doganieri tells TheWrap

Mikey Glazer | May 22, 2017 @ 1:08 PM

...

In a surprise Saturday night announcement (May 13), CBS renewed the show for Season 30.

A few days later, TheWrap chatted with series co-Creators, Executive Producers, and husband-and-wife team Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri to get their reactions.

“Bertram is already in the office with a map on the wall,” Doganieri said. “He’s starting to point at countries.”

In TheWrap’s exclusive interview, the duo reveal how the Season 30 pickup came about and whether they had already prepared a series sendoff, talk about the possibility of Season 30 being an “All Star” strangers season, and discuss their own race to add another Emmy to their hefty trophy case.

When you shot Season 29 last summer, already knowing that the show did not have a slot on the 2016-17 schedule, did you shoot a series finale package as a safety to have something to send off the series?  If so, did you have to recut anything in the upcoming season finale?

Elise Doganieri: No. We never thought it was the end. (Laughing)

Bertram van Munster: Not at all. We never looked at it that way. Never. I doubt even if the show ended that it wouldn’t be picked up 5 years from now. It is truly an evergreen. It would be a difficult show to sell now because so much is manipulated (now) but ours is not manipulated, it’s not touched, it’s the real thing.

You’ve outlasted two version of “American Idol” and, except for “Survivor,” all of the other reality shows of the founding generation that first debuted at the same time as the “Race”.

ED:  It’s a great feeling.

BvM: And we got our 15 Emmys to go with it.

For Season 30, it would seem like a really good idea to do repeat this “strangers schoolyard pick”  format for making teams, but with All Star alumni from the series. Is that something you’re open to: “All Star First Impressions”?

BvM: We’re not going to tell you that. (Both laughing). This is all going to be discussed within the next week with the network. We have a rough idea. But we just need to discuss with the network how we can do it.

ED: We’re open to a lot of things. It’s really what is the best for the show. Everything’s open right now.

Will you entertain some hypothetical All Star stranger teams? What would it be like to have a team of (hysterical and teary) Rachel Reilly and (hysterical) Brooke Camhi (from this season) ….or Hayley (from the Blind Date season).

BvM: We’re not going to give you any help here.

ED: Are you saying that we should mix up the teams up with cast members we have had in the past?

TheWrap: Yes, two person teams of strangers from previous contestants. There could be a celebrity team of Tyler Oakley and New Kid on the Block Jonathan Knight. Though a bit on the nose, we could see super athletes with disabilities Redmond Ramos and Bethany Hamilton team up.

ED: Bertram and I, when we start saying things like “That would be great.” Everyone (else) says “Why not me? Why not me?” So Bertram’s right. We’re going to leave it a surprise. We’re ready for Season 30. Put your seat belt on. It’s going to be a wild ride.

What’s the time table for pre-production and when do you think you might shoot?

BvM: Here’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to have a meeting (this) week with the network and then we will lay out the official time table. That’s as much as I can give you right now. I think we’ll be starting up pretty soon.

ED: I will tell you Bertram is already in the office with a map on the wall. He’s starting to point at countries. I said ‘OK, let’s get going.’ He is ready to go.

We’re in the heart of Emmy nomination season. What do you want to say to Emmy voters?

ED: I would like the Emmy voters to know that after all these seasons, that we are still putting 110% effort in to the production value, casting, locations, challenges and the entire show for CBS. I just would like everyone to know that we would love to have that Emmy back. It’s time, isn’t it?

(Ed. Note: “The Voice” has won this category for the last two years.)

ED: Thank you to all of our fans and the people that are voting. Please know that our show is not an easy show to produce and it might look easy when you watch in on TV, but it is a behemoth, a behemoth to produce.

BvM: I think it’s a testament to the quality of people and environment that we operate in that we got a pickup for 30. Elise said it all. We are glad that we can raise the bar in the reality television genre with a show like this.

ED: Think about all the locations we go to and all the people around the world that cooperate and work with us because there is such a love of the show globally. A lot of these locations  you can’t just get in to. It’s been an extraordinary experience and we are welcomed by countries, welcomed by tourism boards, welcomed by embassies, and we just have an incredible (reach that is) a global community. We want to do this show forever and ever, we just love making it.

Since you guys wrapped shooting last summer and post-production likely in the fall, is there any Betram and Elise non-“Amazing Race” development we should be looking out for?

ED: Yes, yes, yes, …but I don’t know how much we can say because we are in development on three, possibly four shows right now. We’ve been very busy. We haven’t just been sitting back saying “What are we going to do next?”.  We’ve been very busy.  An announcement will probably come soon, but not just yet.

Just know there’s more coming.

BvM:  We are currently shooting The Amazing Race China, Amazing Race Israel, and the Amazing Race Canada.

ED: So when people see those people running around with backpacks and the Amazing Race fanny packs, those are the formats running around the world right now.

Don't be so sure... ;)

what we need is a CAST.

The suspense is killing me Peach, using the wink emoticon is sending me some messages. Loved this article, with S.29's doing well, hopefully the Race is going to pick up from there.

Am I the only one with the idea that they're thinking of another themed season?
Just what Elise & Bertram's words made me feel like.

Another interview: http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/remote-controlled-amazing-race-bertram-van-munster-1202440944/

Interesting, Sri Lanka 2, replaced a Qatar leg on All Stars!

And they also confirm Laos (due to a monsoon) was replaced by Thailand 2 during TAR19 filming.

Interesting, I do hope they will use these unused legs in the future. We should have been to 90 countries by now.

Belize was slated to be the 1st leg for S.25, the U.S. Virgin Islands replaced it according to BvM. I do hope we nail another Emmy in the future. Excited to what the producers are going to do.

No...before that, we lost a Belize ep due to a hurricane I think. DO you have the source for that please?

Aw, that's twice for Belize :(

They were supposed to go there in Family Edition according to the Bransens, but again, a tropical storm.

Sucks hearing about these never-seen countries we were supposed to get.

Can't find it anymore, it was a podcast interview between a host and BwM himself. If I ever come across it, I'll post it.

That's interesting to know, and no wonder those 2 episodes look very average. I particularly don't like the Thailand 2 leg in TAR19, the design was so weird.

It's surprised to know that they planned to go to Qatar and Laos that long time ago, why haven't they gone those places yet? I am so interested to see what they plan to do in Doha, and these are new countries!

It sounds they have gotten no where with Season 30.

It seems like they will be filming in July-August. I expect a 1 season p/y now. But if it means better seasons, im fine.

Its not on the fall schedule so the interviewer needs to assume that it will go on next year.

That could probably mid-season (around December or January of next year) with three renewed reality shows (Survivor, The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss).

It's likely midseason (which is November to February) so they have to shoot it this year and prepare for next year.

The Amazing Race: Phil Keoghan Predicts Who Will Win Season 30

It's time for a new season of The Amazing Race, which means it's also time to make predictions on who will win. To get the opinion of someone who may actually know a thing or two about this season, TV Guide sat down with host Phil Keoghan to ask how he sees the upcoming adventure shaking out.

Phil obliged us in giving us his semi-annual list, but added the qualifier that he's always wrong in the beginning. This season — the Emmy winner's 30th — the veteran host has it even tougher because the show is celebrating 30 trips around the world with the most competitive group of athletes The Amazing Race has ever seen. Firefighters, lifeguards, race car drivers and professional basketball players are all vying for the top prize, but most of them are not at the top of Phil's lineup.

He predicts that the race car drivers will do well. In fact, Phil predicts they'll make it to second place over Big Brother couple Cody Nickson and Jessica Graf. However, his top pick is #TeamExtreme — Kristi Leskinen and Jen Hudak. The freestyle skiers are both X Games veterans and have been voted in the Top 20 Adventure athletes of all time. Yeah, we'd agree that's makes them pretty tough competition to beat.

The Amazing Race premieres Jan. 3 at 8/7c on CBS.

Do teams have the option in choosing that or not? When they were in Belgium, I thought the french fry task was a roadblock. If every team competes, will this be the only thing in the episode?

EDIT:
Or maybe the last 2 teams to the mat compete and whoever wins, is safe and the other team is eliminated

If they're outright copying it from the other versions, yes. Every team has to do it, and wait for the next team if they lose. A la Intersections. It won't be the only task, no.

Guys! This is the Media thread. If a location/task/outcome has NOT been discussed in the MEDIA itself, this is NOT the place for spoiler-ish discussion. Please take that to the spoiler threads. Thanks!

The Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan Says Look Out for Yoga Moms in Season 30!

The Amazing Race turns the big 3-0 on Wednesday, Jan. 3, and the CBS veteran reality series is celebrating by pitting the most competitive teams it could find against each other knowing that only one team will emerge victorious.

The landmark season kicked off in Washington Square Park in New York City in October, where TV Guide met host Phil Keoghan for our semi-annual chat about the upcoming season. The host reflected on reaching 30 seasons, why the race is still going and what fans are going to get out of the upcoming episodes, featuring pro-athletes, a divisive Big Brothercouple, firefighters, cops, and moms who do yoga with goats.

Phil Keoghan: It feels great to be at Season 30. It's such a milestone. We weren't really sure if we were going to have a chance to come back and do 30, to be honest with you. The fact that we get to this milestone number of 30 seasons is really a great opportunity. I think everybody is really pumped up for this season and I think the stakes are a lot harder this season. We have the most competitive teams, collectively, on paper that we've ever had. You just look at the credentials of every single one of these teams.

Phil Keoghan Takes Us Behind the Scenes of 'The Amazing Race' Season 30

Ingela Ratledge January 03, 2018 3:00 pm

What a trip! CBS’s reality competition The Amazing Race has been crisscrossing the globe for 30 seasons. And its current installment could be the most intense yet: All of the teams vying for $1 million are comprised of folks who’ve risen to the top of their respective fields, from former NBA pros Cedric Ceballos and Shawn Marion to Yale debating champs Henry Zhang and Evan Lynyak. In honor of the anniversary, host Phil Keoghan (above, addressing the group) reveals behind-the-scenes intel on the wild ride ahead.

PERENNIAL WINNERS MAKE FOR SORE LOSERS “Usually, we put so-called ordinary people in extraordinary situations,” Keoghan says. “But this season, we’re going to see what happens when they’re elite, highly skilled people from many walks of life.” The answer? Well, not all of those skills will be transferable—much to the contestants’ dismay. Says Keoghan, “They’re not used to floundering or being out of their wheelhouse, so it’s humbling…and kind of funny to watch!”

THE CHALLENGES ARE CUSTOMIZED Given the teams’ wide array of expertise, the powers that be had to work extra hard to come up with Roadblocks, Detours and such that wouldn’t offer unfair advantages or handicaps. “We go to incredible lengths to make sure it’s balanced,” Keoghan notes. “We can’t expect our basketball guys to float down a river in a tiny wicker basket—they’d sink!”

IT’S THE JOURNEY…AND THE DESTINATION(S) Never content to rest on its laurels (or 15 Emmy wins), the show’s crew came into this year creative guns blazing. “We’re always looking to keep it fresh with different graphics or ways to get into the challenges,” Keoghan says. Fittingly, they’ll be covering new ground in the literal sense as well. Says Keoghan, “We’ll be sharing Bahrain with the audience, because who’s been to Bahrain? If it’s a struggle to point out on the map, then that’s a good place to go!”

Episode 4 & 5 title will be "Gotta Put Your Sole Into it" to be aired 01/24/2018.

Copied this from Speculation and Discussion thread:

Its a 2 hour episode instead of Back to Back episodes like last season
You can call it a different way, but that's the exact same thing. :cmaslol An actual 2-hour episode would feature one leg and one elimination.

No. It is 2 separate episodes.

Jan 24 (Wed) 8-10 PM EP 4 & 5

We just don't have (and possibly won't get) the second title yet.

via CBS Denver

DJ Sixsmith: What excites you the most about this season of “The Amazing Race”?

Phil Keoghan: It starts with the fact that CBS has given us this fantastic new time slot in prime time on Wednesday nights. We’ve wanted to be in a good time slot like that for a long time. That is something that our fans seem to be responding to. Also, it is exciting to be back out in the world doing this exciting 30th season. We have this renewed energy as program makers making this show for people.
...

DS: How do you continue to reinvent yourself as a host after all these years hosting the show?

PK: I’m as enthusiastic about the show this year as I was in season one. If anything, I’m even more enthusiastic. It’s always new, fresh and exciting. I never feel like I’m repeating myself because we’re going to different places all the time. It can’t get boring. The other thing is, we always have new teams coming on. I’m excited to share the world with them. I always say at the beginning of the show, the world is waiting for you. I say that not just for the audience, but also for the teams. The world is really waiting for them and we have all these incredible adventures set up for them. I get excited about knowing that they’ll see the world in a very special way. They’re racing for $1 million, but the experience that they get on “The Amazing Race” is worth way more than $1 million. $1 million couldn’t buy this experience that we’re giving them.

The was in my mailbox as this week’s double episode was ending.

https://www.google.com/url?rct=j&sa=t&url=https://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/2018/01/phil-keoghan-amazing-race-seasons-30-31/&ct=ga&cd=CAEYASoTMTE2NzE0MjM3MDY5OTg3NTI0MzIaNmQzY2Q3NzUyMmY4MWZiYTpjb206ZW46VVM&usg=AFQjCNFK79BevgYQ9h72wgg-cOdKSSr0Rg

I’m still amazed Phil doesn’t seem to remember that Wednesday at 8 pm was TAR’s original time slot as it premiered on September 5,2001, six days before 9/11, which was a Tuesday.
