Well... let's not get ahead of ourselves. TAR29 is merely being used as a filler since Training Day tanked. Plus, both Training Day and TAR are Jerry Bruckheimer productions, so that likely played a part in the decision.  As well as CBS not having anything else to fill the valuable Thursday 10pm slot with for the rest of the season.  TAR29 will still need to do better than it's been doing on Fridays and just because it's on Thursday doesn't guarantee that.  TAR still needs to do a lot of work, needs some luck and maybe even a miracle, tbh.

Since they are giving TAR a new day-it shows some faith.

They could've given it a Friday or Saturday slot, but noooo THURSDAY!

10PM is not great though...

I think this is actually a good move for us. It shows some confidence in the show from CBS. CBS has stuggled with the Thursday at 10 PM slot occupants not only this season, but for a while, so I think that gives TAR a little wiggle room to work with. I don't think we'll do any worse than we would have done on Fridays, and who knows, this could be the best thing that's happened for the series in a while and this could end up as our permanent slot.

Not Getting carried away or anything as in all honesty still think this probable is the final season but before this i had ZERO hope that it would return this atleast gives alittle bit of hope

No more 2-hr premiere probably means we have a massive chaotic leg 1  :groan:
Can it be a single episode of contestant introduction instead of leg 1?

To be honest, a premiere of only contestant introduction would confuse people and turn viewers away. There has to be at least some racing imo.
So perhaps include the starting line task + race to the airport in that hour as well.

Also, I'm excited about TAR 29! Let's see how it turns out!
You are the last team to arrive.
This is a Philmination leg, so I'm sorry to tell you that you have been Philiminated from the race.

Maybe the 2-hour premiere was really the first 2 Legs, normal episodes.  And now with the change, they'll only show the first Leg, first episode.

Anyway, I don't think this really changes what CBS thinks of TAR.  It's just up to TAR to attract a bigger audience.  Thursday at 10pm provides an opportunity to do that, but not a guarantee.

100 percent this. Just means that the original 2 hour premiere was 2 episodes back to back, and now we6only get one.

I think its a slightly more promising sign, but we still have to perform well

Just a reminder:
TAR 6 was also moved up by weeks to replace a failing show (Viva Laughlin after 2 episodes) back in 2004 (late November on Saturdays to mind-October on Tuesdays, IIRC).

TAR 9 premiered and aired a half-season in the 10pm timeslot (post Super Bowl and then concern about content, IIRC) in 2006 before returning to a earlier weeknight 8pm timeslot for the remainder of that seasons, and several seasons thereafter.

TAR's scheduling issue came because CBS half-expected one of its new fall series to run into trouble, but none of them did. Training Day was in ratings trouble from what was described in the Deadline Hollywood article from the time it premiered, so even if Bill Paxton hadn't died unexpectedly, renewal was unlikely, hence that show's move to Saturdays to burn off its remaining episodes.

But for the NCAA Tournament these next two weeks, TAR might have been moved up to next week (exactly what happened with season six after Viva Laughlin was cancelled way back when.) Expect of lot of TAR promos from now until March 30 or even ongoing since most folks were aware of the late April scheduling.

With the new timeslot and news of a potential writers strike (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/hollywood-on-edge-as-possibility-of-another-writers-strike-looms-2017-03-05), I am somewhat hopful that TAR can get it's mojo back and get renewed for TAR30 and beyond.

Did a quick check of the online TV Guide to see what competition TAR is up against on the new night.  Despite the not-so-optimal time slot, Thursdays looks like a "wasteland" for the other networks.  Maybe they have a chance going up against these posers:

Thursdays @10PM

FOX - (local news)
NBC - The Blacklist: Redemption
ABC - The Catch
FX   - Baskets
USA - Colony
Bravo - Real Housewives of Atlanta
E!   - Keeping Up With The Kardashians
SHO - Homeland

Still, this all sounds a bit rushed.....  but beggars can't be choosers...  }:>

Very nitpicky theschnauzers, but it was actually season 12 that came in for the ill-fated Viva Laughlin. Season 6 was slated for Saturdays but replaced the dreaded 'Clubhouse.' on Tuesdays at 9. Season 9 started Tuesdays at 10, and due to very lackluster ratings, moved to Wednesdays at 8 halfway through the season. That is what concerns me most, that we've already been tried at 10 pm once and quickly had to move.

However, if the prior poster is correct and there could be a writers strike looming, that absolutely helps our chances. The last strike was in 2008, and CBS was really scrambling. That year they had inexplicably ordered only one TAR season (season 12), so they had no more seasons to air during the strike. They ended up bringing Big Brother back early for a winter run to fill 3 hours a week.

The time won't be a problem for me... I'm a night owl. But one of my co-workers that loves the show goes to bed before 10:00 since she gets up at 4:00 to be at work at 5:30.  She will DVR it though so will still watch it later.

RATINGS are going to be crucial for this season. May well determine whether we get a single or a two season renewal.

SO WATCH LIVE. DVR IT> Watch the DVR multiple times within the first 24 hours. Just play it background if you must.

Be POSITIVE with your comments. Use #AmazingRace hashtags on Twitter. Post often and retweet all the other #AmazingRace you see. This all counts.

J no longer subscribe to cable, but will add CBS All Access to watch on my devices, and get my usual ITunes download backup. I may need to pull out an digital antenna for the first episode, as I won't set up the app until after the 3rd of the month. (taking into account any free trial period so I'm not billed until after the 3rd.)

With the 1-hour episode premiere, I guess they'll probably be editing Leg 1 to 2 parts. With the season's format, it'll be really hard to cut corners on leg 1. Guess on part 1 they could end with teams boarding or arriving on first destination.

So glad that this is happening later this month, not two months ago. With the US going into DST, I'm back to being only 1 hour apart from the East Coast. So I'll get to watch this live, especially if I plan to contribute with some additional insights from Leg 2. If this was during Oct~Nov, that would've been impossible, with the 3 hour difference.

Sounds like a lot of confusion regarding the Thursday/Friday lineups.  Maybe this article from the Orlando Sentinel will muddy up the waters even more.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment/tv/tv-guy/os-et-amazing-race-returns-march-30-story.html

Apparently, Undercover Boss will take over TAR's Friday 8PM slot April 28.  So  that slot could be available if Undercover Boss does not materialize.  Or maybe the St. Louis article was only half right.  Either way, both Thursdays and Fridays schedule will change soon.

Interesting update on The Futon Critic's TAR listings. All Thursday airings, but two-hour episodes on April 20 AND May 18.
http://thefutoncritic.com/showatch/amazing-race/listings/

3/30/17 Episode 1
4/6/17 Episode 2
4/13/17 Episode 3
4/20/17 Episodes 4 & 5 (starts at 9:01pm)
4/27/17 Episode 6
5/4/17 Episode 7
5/11/17 Episode 8
5/18/17 Episodse 9 & 10 (9:01pm)

That very much screams a burn off.  At the same time, it'll give TAR 7 weeks to prove itself before CBS' May Upfronts (which will be held on Wednesday, May 17 this year).

GAAAHHH, this is far too confusing for me!

Why can't CBS just schedule TAR on Thursdays! It would save a lot of hassle...

You may very well be right about the "burn off", but there may be another explanation.  Legs 9 & 10 are both in
Show content
Vietnam
, so back-to-back showings makes sense.  Legs 4 & 5 however are a different story,
Show content
as one is in Tanzania and the other in Norway
, so there goes that theory.  Should have been 3 & 4.  So maybe they just want to finish before Memorial Day, which require legs 11 & 12 to be a back-to-back showing as well, but Futon Critic does not show that info yet.  Looks fishy to me!   }:>

Just checked and "Mom" and "Life in Pieces" only have a few episodes left. Having them take April 20 off puts them into May sweeps with 3 episodes instead of ending their seasons on May 4.  Both will air their season finales on May 11, which then leaves a hole at 9pm.

"Big Bang" and "Great Indoors" don't have many unscheduled new episodes left either though.

TAR 29 isn't being burned off. The 2016-17 television season ends mid May. So networks typically try and get as many episodes aired before this date(Because viewing tends to be lower from this point on Broadcast as we move into the Summer season).

Keep in mind the show that once occupied this slot failed badly. CBS are using TAR to fill a hole in its schedule, nothing more. This isn't a permanent move for the show. CBS had always planned to use TAR after MacGyver but Training Day was an unexpected failure for the network.

By the way, TAR has no competition in this slot. The Blacklist Redemption and The Catch both pulled a 0.7 with their most recent episodes. CBS are looking at a timeslot winner here.

TAR would've aired well June had it premiered in late April also. Like you said, TAR is filler and it doesn't really matter if it finishes its run before the end of the regular season in May or in June.  So the possibility of airing not one, but two 2-hour episodes feels like they're eager to get it over with.  The season will end June 1st, unless they also air the finale as 2-hours which in the past sounded great, but would just confirm what then network thinks of the show now.  CBS could've easily kept the show on with an episode a week to finish on June 15 which would've kept new programming on Thursdays closer to the premiere of BB/Zoo on June 29.

The show isn't filler, CBS just had nothing else to place there after pulling Training Day from the schedule. The network never planned on Training Day performing so badly for them. I would also like to point out that the more episodes of TAR aired out of season in this slot, the higher chance of the show risking new lows. Scheduling as many episodes as possible before the television season concludes is quite protective of CBS(In my humble opinion).

I wouldn't like to see the shows numbers if it aired one episode per week out of season and into Summer in this slot. I fully believe the show will absolutely be renewed and given a better slot.

And thanks BourkieBoy. Have a good weekend all.

That's basically the definition of filler. Or more specifically, "schedule spackle." TAR had no timeslot until the network ran out of original MacGyver episodes.  TAR was benched for most of the season and was called up when needed.  If Training Day had done well, TAR29 would've run well into June on Fridays if not gotten a full Summer slot alongside BB on Thursdays at 8pm or on a Tuesday even with a late June premiere.

I disagree about it being burnoff. They're getting as many new episodes in before the end of the television season. The alternative is an extra week of reruns for the comedies that run at 9 pm. They're hoping TAR will rate better than reruns to boost the final season averages.

Edit: wrote this after only seeing the previous page, but End I see summed it up perfectly.

Potentially off-topic, but CBS just renewed 16 shows - TAR and a few other shows left in limbo.

What's very interesting is this small tidbit:

Quote
Also undecided is unscripted competition show The Amazing Race, which launches its new season next month in Training Day's time slot with the network said to want to shift to one season per year while producers are looking for two cycles.

Does this mean we are getting at LEAST 30?

We've always been on this list when CBS hands out its mass renewals sometime in March. I would say this is a very ominous sign.

I was really hoping it would get renewed before the new season started, as instead now we will have to sweat out the ratings every Friday morning, and let's be honest: they're not going to be good. Poor ratings will be further leverage in whatever negotiations CBS has ongoing with WRP

I would argue that we have a fighting chance - both shows in its competition at the Thursdays at 10 PM timeslot are doing absolutely poor and are likely to be cancelled by both ABC and NBC (The Catch + The Blacklist Redemption).

But yes, fingers crossed. :(

You are absolutely correct, and that certainly could provide a small boost, but I try not to subscribe much to that competition theory. If a show is on that people want to watch, it will get watched. Modern Family thrived head to head against American Idol for years, and more recently against Empire, and thats just one small example.

Race is a family-oriented show, and I definitely worry about the 10 pm spot.

This is the only reason I'm sweating - I don't see TAR's (casual) audience as one that would tune in so late. DVRs are popular, sure, but I never put much hope in them.

Why are so many people freaking about a 10 pm timeslot?

The most acclaimed season, TAR5, aired on Tuesdays 10 pm, in summer 2004 and TAR9 aired on 10 pm Wednesdays in March 2006. Both succeeded.

WE can make this work whatever time we are in IF we all work together..

Watch or record LIVE time.

DVR watch as many times as possible, first within 24 hours then within a week. (You can always just run it with sound off after the first few).

Watch multiple times on CBS ALL Access if you can. Watch for a one month free trial and HELP OUT!

BE POSITIVE on FB...share how glad you are that we are back! Save the hate for later!

On Twitter: Twitter lots! Use #AmazingRace29 and #TAR29.  Include @AmazingRaceCBS ‏

Use the search feature for Amazing Race and RETWEET every nice tweet you see. We want to create a major BUZZ and show how HAPPY we are TAR is back. Getting TAR trending every week would be ideal!

If you are serious about wanting more...DO YOUR PART!!

There's another option that CBS counts in the eyeball department.
(And I have verified this with the CBS app folks,)
I dropped my cable service at the end of the year and switched to using just streaming services. My plan has been that I would add CBS AllAccess once TAR returned and not until then. I had planned with the original April premiere date to sign up in early April, in time it to when I get direct deposits each month, but then CBS did this last minute schedule change.

With the one week free trial for the lower cost ($6.99/month) that isn't commercial free, they won't bill you for the first month until your free week expires (and exactly one full week.) So I will sign up probably on Wednesday do I'm not billed before I have the direct deposit in my bank, and I will be able to watch the premiere live and will be able to rewatch thereafter.

CBS makes clear that these views ARE included in the Nielsen numbers. For those of you outside the U.S., sorry the app is for US viewers only, since the app can restrict to U.S. viewers based on IP and your provided bankcard number.

But that is another way to make sure your viewing counts!

And what I'm spending now with streaming without cable is half of what I was spending on cable!

When the time shift was announced, I checked the Futon Critic and it had the first 8 episodes listed as one hour without a gap.
The May sweeps end a little later in May this year, so for TAR, literally all but the season finale on June 1st will be counted in the TV ratings year. That's actually better than usual as normally, TAR's spring season would end with only the finale airing during May sweeps period.

Go figure!

That's my view of the situation, whether it is one cycle or two for next season. CBS gambled that a fall series would falter and none did, and that put them in a scheduling bind with TAR this season. And I'm sure Mooves and the executive corps were hearing complaints about the TAR scheduling not only from fans, but from the international stations that carry US TAR at roughly the same time CBS airs it. It's very unusual scheduling for two two hour segments in the middle of the season, so it is clear CBS is having to do this because of their already established schedule for the summer series both scripted and unscripted.
If CBS somehow doesn't renew TAR, I will cancel CBS AllAccess after TAR 29 finale. While I like some of the other CBS shows, I'll sacrifice those if need be as a protest. I am not happy about how season 29 was handled. That's the honest truth. And if we need another writing letters campaign at some point, I still have my notes saved on my notebook from the original one. JSYK.
