TAR 28 Maps
« on: February 11, 2016, 12:03:46 AM »
Since we don't have the maps thread for the exciting 28th season, we will be necessary to get maps when visiting cities throughout the race.

We had everything for Leg 1.
On Leg 2 we only lacked the Detour; the "Mello Farandula" juice shop is here and the beach is just south of the village.

I think we had almost everything for Leg 3. The bus Detour started next to Caribe Plaza (here) with no set ending; when teams got their money they got off the bus and returned to the start.

We had most of Leg 4 except for Jet D'Eau, the chocolate shop and the basement where they spent the night (never found it). On Leg 5 we had Grands Montets; we lacked Planpraz and the pitstop.

They spent the night (or at least procured their winter kit) at Les Aiglons (source).

Leg 7
We had everything but the candy; if Mr. Google is correct, the address below translates to 15 Arsukidze, which is just down the street from the cathedral in Mtskhela.
Addition: Tyler posted (see here) that teams took their candy or wine
to an unknown store before proceeding to Rustaveli in an unaired segment

Bottle just gave us this as well:

Yes it was Arsukidzis 15- That's the adress.
Here's the full information about that street: http://ge.geoview.info/arsuk%CA%BCidzis_kucha,28090911w

Bit strange it was so far from the winery isn't it? ???

Leg 8
Teams crossed the creek and hopped an abra at the Deira station. Although Phil described the Pit Stop as the Old Souq station, teams alighted at the station and had to run a few hundred yards to the Creekside Cafe.
The Oasis Detour is still a bit of a puzzle. Platinum Heritage describes their camp here:
Quote
Our camp is located approximately half way between the cities of Dubai and Al Ain.
Several companies have set up faux-bedouin camps in the area, so take your pick.

Found the finishing points of the bus detour in Cartagena!
- Zach/Rachel (1st attempt): Junction of Av Pedro de Heredia and Diagonal 22 (1.0km)
- Zach/Rachel (2nd attempt): Junction of Av Pedro de Heredia and Transversal 33 (1.7km)
- Scott/Blair: Junction of Calle 30 and Carrera 47 (2.9km)
- Erin/Joslyn: Junction of Carrera 56 (4.7km, the same car is parked in front in Street View!)

So judging by distance alone, Zach/Rachel were the most efficient? (They also plied the busiest part of the route twice.)

Leg 9
A Tanah Lot map is here.
The "Natural Salt Maker" is here.
Semawang beach is right outside the Fairmont, where they did the confessionals.
And the phinisi was the Ilike.

Question about Dubai: The teams arrived at the camel racetrack from the north; does this mean that the Bedouin camp was between the city and the racetrack? (At some point they turned off the highway onto a two-lane road.)

Also: Leg 1 maps - slowly catching up!

I'm not as certain anymore. They certainly went south to the DDP (with the walking detour closeby); but where's that? Check out the first few seconds of this video and compare it to this viiewpoint; it looks like they're entering the Al Awir traffic circle from the north. However, a few moments later in the video, when they would have us believe teams are approaching the racetrack, we see cars at the Ud al Bayda intersection going north→west (viewpoint).   ???

In the insider video for Zach/Rachel they drive past a sign on the way to the camels, but it's blurred out. Al- something?
It seems like the camels are not the exact same place as the Bedouin camp.

Also: Leg 2 and 3 maps!

Legs 4 and 5!

From the Insider Videos, the overnight rest stop in Geneva was on Rue de la Fontaine, just across the street from the chocolaterie on Rue de l'Enfer. The basement was underneath either the Terrasse Agrippa-d'Aubigné or the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Still can't find the Bedouin camp or the desert oasis, but Zach/Rachel were driving down this road towards the Murquab Gate of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, 20km south of the camel racetrack, on the way to the land rovers in their Insider Video.

The blurred out sign must have said "Al Maha" something.

If the desert oasis were a semi-permanent structure, we might be able to find the square pool in its centre?

Slowhatch found the operating company:

The Land Rover carrying Matt/Dana bears the logo of Platinum Heritage. The only description of their operation is that it's "nestled inside the privacy of a royal desert retreat."

One of their dinner tours has an "oasis". Could this be it?

https://www.platinum-heritage.com/platinum-collection-luxurysafaridubai/platinum-dinner-safari

Here is a Desert Safari info blurb:

Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine being with a group of your closest friends, associates, family members, or fellow adventure seekers. You’re in the middle of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, riding in a luxury Range Rover and a legendary 1950’s Series 1 Land Rovers. Totally in comfort. And in awe.

As you look out the windows of your vehicle, what you’re able to see all around simply amazes you. It’s the awesome beauty of the Dubai desert – which, as you may know, is unlike any other untouched desert in the world. You’ll be traversing the private land of a member of the Royal Family. This is their land you’ll be on. And you’ll be one of only a handful of people to do so.

The "Driving Directions" on the instruction sheet that Cole was holding is hidden below the fold, but there is this sentence: Margham is also spelled Margam. If teams approached the camel racetrack from the south, that might explain the offramp cap I posted earlier: if drivers couldn't make a left turn into Al Marmoum, then they would use the interchange to do a 180.

Good catch Slowhatch!

And thanks Peach! The main Platinum Heritage camp is different from the "Oasis" camp, BUT you can spot it for a split-second in the background as Burnie/Ashley are leaving!

At this moment you see Zach/Rachel running northwest past the camp, which doesn't leave much room as there's a fence just 750m beyond. Look around for a temporary-looking camp and you find the spot! (The layout is different from on the show, but that's to be expected; it's temporary!)

Still looking for the Detour Decision Point near Margham!

Found the Detour Decision Point! Narrowing it down to Margham helped a lot!

When Kurt/Brodie are leaving you can see two distinct roads, running almost parallel. This narrows it down along the entirety of the Margham road to one particular intersection, where you can find the building against which the teams parked!

This would explain the footage of al-Awir Roundabout; teams left the airport, took the I-66, but then changed to the E-44 (passing al-Awir), entering the Margham road from the northeast, then exiting from the southwest back onto the I-66. Left turn for the "oasis", right turn for the camel racetrack (making a U-turn at Ud al-Bayda to enter the racetrack from the north).

There's something about the Middle East that always gets teams (frequently younger couple teams) hopelessly, hopelessly lost - starting from Paul and Amie in Tunisia! Other victims include Peter/Sarah in Kuwait, Lance/Keri in Dubai, Gary/Mallory in Oman, and
Show content
Dave/Kelly
(TAR Australia) in Israel.

Is it the bad road signage? Lack of locals to ask for directions? Lousy maps available? Language barrier? Or the navigating partner (the female partner usually) not working well with the driving partner?
