True Detective S2 E2; Night Finds You

The state and local police go head to head in the investigation as they each vie for the rights for the case. Both parties realize that Caspere’s death is “a window into everything” in Vinci, especially the many shady private business dealings that were being kept from the state. Paul, Ray, and Ani are put on the case as Paul continues to just want to be put back on the open road.

More information on Caspere’s murder is revealed during an autopsy which shows that Caspere was horrifically tortured before he was placed at the rest stop to be found by Paul. With his eyes burned out and genitals shot off, whoever was trying to get information from Caspere was clearly not grounded by any fear of moral or godly retribution.

The episode starts out with a rather slow scene of Semyon lying in bed with his wife recanting a rather disturbing childhood memory of being locked in a basement with rats while his father went out on a drinking bender.

The rest of the episode doesn’t prove much cheerier for the gangster trying to go legit as he loses five million dollars that a now dead Caspere was holding onto. Without the money, Frank will be left sitting on the sidelines of a major railroad and land deal that would have put him on the path of the straight and narrow and set him up financially.

Allowed to get back in on the deal if he comes up with the cash, a now almost bankrupt Frank goes about beating the crap out of people in an effort to recoup his lost profits.

The tale of the gunman and Ray

Collin Farrell continues to do what he does best—be moody. When the forlorn and moral- compassless cop heads to his son’s school to pick him up, he is intercepted by his ex-wife who tells the eager father that he is no longer allowed to see his son. After beating the living daylights out of someone for stealing his son’s sneakers last episode, Frank’s blatant display of depravity cost him visitation rights to his son. As Frank pleads with his ex-wife claiming that his son is quite literally the only ray of light he has in his life, he is pulled away from him in an admittedly sad moment.

After taking a large dose of Viagra to sleep with his girlfriend last week, it was evident Paul Woodrugh had some less than slight sexual issues. The issues continued to seep out this episode as we are introduced to Paul’s mother, a clingy, chain-smoking, Social Security dependent woman who I was confused if she was hitting on her son or just being loving. Sexual issues explained.

Paul also shares a heated scene with his girlfriend in which his severe and unaddressed issues prove too much for the brunette beauty as she tells him to leave and not return. The scene where Paul watches as a gay escort leaves his customers car was a bit confusing. We can already tell Paul has severe sexual repression issues, but could those issues be that Paul has a preference for the same sex? Doesn’t matter. The stunner would be a sensation to both sexes.

As Antigone and Frank walk the beat looking for clues for Caspere’s gruesome murder, she also gives us small peeks into her past. Last week we meet her hippie, cult-leader- esque father who the beauty clearly has some major issues with. This week we are told that of the five other children she grew up with, two committed suicide, and two are in jail. Yikes.

Although slow, the episode ends on a suspenseful note when Ray enters one of Caspere’s multiple homes in search of clues that could have led to his murder. As he enters, a masked gunmen walks up to Ray and shoots him twice in the stomach before calmly walking away. The screen goes black as Ray is seen laying on his back his fate looking less than promising.
