Indeed, there's a second flight to Rio:

UA 1693 Los Angeles to Houston-Intercontinental/George Bush, 1430-1949
UA 129 Houston-Intercontinental to Rio de Janeiro-Galeao, 2120-0925+1 (arrives 2 minutes ahead of the first flight)

really doubt that they go through Houston. There is a 2-3 hour layover there on United. I have flown that before. there are about 4 flights they can use to get to Miami. I would suspect that the 30 minute head start happens on the leg from Miami to Rio. Time to go check the flights now.

I believe Neobie's flight combo through Miami is correct too. At least the flight to Miami. The connecting flight makes the most sense.

Whoever is on the Delta Flight will have this to worry about. I think they are flying to Rio directly, not stopping in Sao Paulo. If that is the case, Delta 61 departs tonight at 10:22PM ET but is often delayed.

I think I would have deliberately not come in first to avoid all that risk of being alone!

It appears flights are Delta #1654 LAX-ATL 1:30-8:59 PM,  Delta # 61 ATL-GIG 10:22PM-8:57AM
American # 252 LAX-MIA 2:00-10:01PM,  American # 905 MIA-GIG  11:59PM-9:27AM
Pretty good making scheduled departures and arrivals a half hour apart.

Historically, first legs in South America have usually connected through Miami and Atlanta. Don't know about MIA's current physical terminal layout, but this would suggest teams going through Atlanta will have to go from the main terminal to the new international terminal through the people mover and not have to leave the security zone.

Possibly AA 901 for Phil from Miami to Rio..........gets him there at 7:30 am.

DL 61 for the winner of the water bike race.........my data base says that it will land 40 minutes early.....plus the 30 minute built in head start......gives that team an hour and 10 minute head start if all that happens.

AA 905 for the rest of the teams.......since AA started getting some of their 787s, they have started replacing flights with 767s with the now extra 777. AA 905 will be a very comfortable flight now. I flew it about 30 times in a 767......hate that plane now.

Not sure on DL 61 for the winner of the bike race, but AA 901 for Phil would be the best bet, Rox. I checked the information you picked up on FlightView and everything checks.

Latest arrival times for Rio.

Checking flight aware........

AA 901   arriving in Rio at approx. 6:05am CDT 8:05am BRT
possible flight with Phil Bertram and Elise

DL 61  arriving in Rio at approx. 6:26am CDT  8:26am BRT
possible flight of first place team in water bike race

AA 905   arriving in Rio at approx. 7:03am CDT   9:03 am BRT
possible flight of remaining 10 teams

Flight Aware arrival times are normally when the planes wheels touch down on the runway....as a reminder. Flight Stats arrival times are normally the arrival of the plane at the gate.

AT Rio airport Terminal 2, clearing immigration can be time consuming, depend on where a team is located in the plane. Clearing customs will be a breeze since teams do not have to wait for baggage.

Delta bent over backwards to help with this.

Petr (camera) was on an exit row aisle seat. Sound also aisle right behind.

The head flight attendant checked in with Petr several times, updating him long the way.

The team was taken care of with a meal...when I asked if I could buy their lunch, they had already been given  plenty.

The most interesting thing was that we came into Gate E.. which almost NEVER happens on Delta in my experience . And even more interestingly...the flight to Rio was leaving from the next gate.

There was no need to transfer terminals at all. Not  sure where the customs check would have occurred. Coincidence??   :haha

Peach that is down right unusual for a "domestic" flight, especially given the was a change of aircraft at a different gate for the international leg.

There was also one flight to Buenos Aires-Ezeiza (Ministro Pistarini) on the 24th:

JJ 3495 GIG to GRU 2:01 pm to 3:58 pm -> QR 771 GRU to EZE 5:46 pm to 8:34 pm

I think Ezeiza is a provided airport that teams will be arrived, like the teams of TAR 21 that arrived in Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport.
