TAR Canada MEDIA
« on: October 16, 2014, 03:08:56 AM »
TORONTO - Bell Media is teaming with "Survivor" creator Mark Burnett and MGM to develop new TV formats for worldwide audiences.

A TV format is the concept, branding and premise of a program. Examples of international formats adapted by Bell Media's CTV for local audiences include "The Amazing Race Canada," "Masterchef Canada" and "Canadian Idol."

The terms of the deal announced Wednesday were not released, but Bell Media says it already has several pilots for new formats in development and pre-production.

Bell Media is officially partnering with the United Artists Media Group -- a newly formed joint venture among Burnett, his production partner Roma Downey, MGM and Hearst Entertainment -- and Omnicom Canada's Highway Entertainment.

Phil King, president of CTV sports and entertainment programming, said in a news release that the broadcaster was "thrilled" to be partnering with Burnett and others.

"With enormous pedigree and an incredible track record for hit format creation, we look forward to not only developing content for our own market, but internationally as well," he said.

New sponsor for TAR CA - BMO Financial Group. So expect to see gratuitous usage of the Bank of Montreal Mastercard during the race.

Season 1: Interac Debit
Season 2: Scotiabank American Express
Season 3: BMO Air Miles? hehe

I hate to say it, but Air Canada being a sponsor is a curse and a blessing. I bet they are contributing a sizeable amount on keeping the show afloat but them limiting the possible airline destinations kinda sucks. But I really don't mind going back to Canada and do a couple of legs then go to another international destination.

Crews race hard to catch all the action on The Amazing Race Canada

Racers aren’t the only ones who sign on for an adrenalin-filled 30 days.

Approximately 200-plus personnel are on hand for each leg of the Race, with 75-80 of those on board for the entire ride.

Production started April 22 and wrapped May 23 in a location that will be disclosed on the season finale Sept. 23.
(There was great excitement among the largely male crew when they discovered a wash-and-fold service in Whitehorse. Clean clothes, hurrah!)

In addition to the executive team and producers who leapfrog from location to location, there is the crew. The hard-working group includes a father-and-son team, and some returning veterans who worked on the first season of The Amazing Race Canada. Then there’s “Shifty,” a 52-year-old cameraman, acknowledged as being in the best shape of the bunch. Oh, and he has one eye, so he shoots blind on one side.

And consider this: when the gold-medal-winning duo of Meaghan Mikkelson and Natalie Spooner drop their packs and hoof it, their two-person crew has to keep up with the Olympians. The cameraman has to do it (all in focus, remember) with approximately 35 pounds balanced on his shoulder; the soundman with 40 pounds on his belt and in his backpack. (One cameraman, who has also worked on Survivor, says the Race is a way tougher gig.)

The sound-and-vision teams swap out tasks on a daily basis. One day they could be shooting “zone” (getting footage of teams competing once they arrive at challenges; this often involves shooting from a fixed location), the next shadowing a team throughout the day. (The two-person team rotates throughout the Race, pairing with different teams daily.)

And here’s another secret from behind the scenes: the racers’ microphone packs are placed in condoms to protect them from shorting out due to the salt in the racers’ sweat. They use the non-lubricated versions, of course.

Amazing Race returnsby  Wayne Moore | Story: 140963 - May 28, 2015 / 2:35 pm   Photo: Contributed - Visit Summerland Facebook

The Amazing Race Canada flags are flying again in the Okanagan.

Unbeknownst to most, contestants and producers of Amazing Race Canada recently whisked their way in, and out of the South Okanagan.

The region is once again being used as the backdrop for one of the episodes of season three of Amazing Race Canada which airs on CTV beginning July 8.

In season one, Kelowna and West Kelowna served as backdrops for the opening leg of the show, which takes contestants across Canada and around the world. They are asked to perform tasks and compete in contests in hopes to arriving at the finish line ahead of their competitors.

The series is hosted by 2010 Olympic skeleton gold medalist Jon Montgomery.

The showcase in Summerland was the Waterfront Resort and Spa. Officials with the resort were unable to comment on their experience with the show citing a confidentiality agreement.

Christine Petkau executive director of the Summerland Chamber of Commerce said it was exciting, and a bit of surprise, to learn the show was filming in Summerland.

"The reality is it was a surprise. We hadn't known they were coming to town. We picked up that information from social media," said Petkau.

"When that kind of thing happens in a small community it's really exciting."

While Petkau is thrilled Summerland was chosen as one of the locations, she said it's just as important that other South Okanagan locations were used as well.

"My understanding is they did a variety of activities in the South Okanagan region. We work collectively as cooperative communities in the South Okanagan so the reality is when something exciting like this happens it benefits our whole region," said Petkau.

As for exposure Petkau agreed it's priceless. She said she wouldn't know where to begin to price out the cost of 60 minutes of prime time airtime.

Mayor Peter Waterman was also in the dark prior to the show's arrival but wondered what took them so long to discover his South Okanagan community.

"I've lived here most of my life and we've got incredible lakeshore vistas and canyon vistas," said Waterman. "An outfit like Amazing Race I'm sure could find just about everything to suit their purposes."

It's not known at this time when the South Okanagan episode will air.

Amazing Race Canada hits 5 locations in South Okanagan

Host Jon Montgomery and the cast of The Amazing Race Canada slipped into the South Okanagan earlier this week to film part of the show’s third season.

JOE FRIES | Posted 2 weeks ago

Five locations across the South Okanagan were visited earlier this week by cast and crew during filming of The Amazing Race Canada, the Herald has learned.

Sources confirmed the show stopped at the Summerland Waterfront Resort, D’Angelo Estate Winery in Naramata, Covert Farms near Oliver, the Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad and the nearby Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre.

The CTV program, now in its third season, sends two-person teams on a race around the country – and sometimes beyond – during which they complete a series of tasks. The last team to complete the tasks in each episode is usually eliminated, and the final duo standing at the end of the season is declared the winner.Last season’s champions walked away with $250,000 cash, two Chevrolet pickup trucks, gasoline for life from Petro Canada, and a year’s worth of free travel on Air Canada.

During the show’s stop in this region, one of the tasks is believed to have involved wakeboarding on Okanagan Lake near the Summerland Waterfront Resort.Dave Gottwald said it appeared the cast was filming B-roll when he caught a glimpse of the action on Sunday morning.“It was kind of interesting, because besides the actual competition that they do, I think they do editing shots for dramatic purposes, so what I saw them doing I don’t think was for the actual completion,” he said.“They had the competitor holding a GoPro (camera) on a selfie stick  and they were doing a lot of runs with that to get some footage,” said Gottwald, who created a stir after using his Valley Wide Exterior Enterprises account on Twitter to post a photo of the Amazing Race flag hanging from the Summerland hotel.

Upwards of 20 people from Naramata and 50 in total from the Okanagan were taken on as crew during the race’s visit here, according to Kurt Joudrey, who said he was hired by the show’s producers to look after transportation.“They loved the crew here. I got a lot of compliments on the pairings of the drivers. All the executives I spoke with were just thrilled,” said Joudrey, who was reluctant to divulge more details due to a confidentiality agreement he was required to sign to work on the show.Revealing locations or results of the competition “would obviously detract from the suspense of the show,” he explained.J

oudrey, who has experience in the film industry, allowed though that the race’s location managers “were quite pleased with everything we sorted out for them here.”The new season of The Amazing Race Canada premieres July 8.

CTV spokesman Jim Quan said he was unable to confirm the show did indeed visit the South Okanagan and therefore couldn’t comment on when the episode that was shot here will air.

Kelowna was featured in the first episode of the first season of the show, hosted by former Olympian Jon Montgomery, in 2013

Cash, travel, trucks and gas for life: ‘Amazing Race Canada’ Season 3 prizes valued at more than 1 million dollars

"The Amazing Race Canada” returns in less than a month to CTV with the biggest haul of prizes yet! Up for grabs is the hugely coveted grand prize in addition to a record 11 bigger and better pit stop prizes, together totalling more than a million dollars.

The grand prize includes: a $250,000 cash payout, “gas for life” from Petro-Canada, the opportunity to fly for a year anywhere Air Canada flies worldwide in Business Class, and two Chevrolet Colorado Trucks – the 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year, making it the largest grand prize ever awarded for a Canadian competition series.

So they had a three year contract with Air Canada....which means next season is negotiable, and maybe we will finally see them circumnavigating?
Also...confirmation of 11 pit stops, not including the finish line = 12 legs. :cheer:
