TAR 25 Ratings
« on: September 27, 2014, 01:05:13 PM »
Quote
Amazing Race might have a billion Emmys, but all that glitters couldn’t deliver Friday ratings gold for the veteran reality show. The global race series had its 25th season premiere last night, having shifted from its longtime Sunday night NFL-assisted perch to the rough-and-tumble alleys of Friday night. Amazing Race returned to 5.5 million viewers and a mere 1.1 rating among adults 18-49.

This is just horrible news :( Shark tank will move to 9pm starting next week, so ratings might climb!

CBS should've never moved it to Fridays!
Survivor: San Juan del Sur premieres Wednesday, September 24, 2014 8/7C on CBS
The Amazing Race 25 premieres Friday, September 26, 2014 8/7C on CBS

What were the numbers for the premiere of the last 2 seasons? that might be useful the sake of comparison.

Maybe even beyond that because of the All-Star tagline could affect the viewership

Seriously. Go to Hulu and ITunes and the CBS site and watch watch watch. Let an episode run while you are doing something else all day long. EVERY rewatch matters BIG TIME! Next 3 days are important!

To reiterate what I posted at the beginning of this thread -- CBS itself looks at the live plus seven days on all platforms as far as how it evaluate programming, and how it sells advertising.

It has moved completely away from overnight numbers. As CBS itself announced last week, when it does issue a release about overnights, it will be including its in-house estimate of live plus three numbers.

We had the same problem every time the show has been moved to a new night. It happened when TAR was moved to Sunday nights. As for me I have the season pass for I-Tunes which I purchase every season so I have a downloaded copy of each episode without commercials. :)

The other issue is that there will be viewers who do not realize the show has been moved to Friday nights at 8pm, or didn't realize it in time this week. That a promotion issue for CBS; they will far more aggressive with the new Survivor season during the month of September, and I think that also has something to do with the numbers for the TAR premiere.

I just hope it will be able to finish its run as originally planned on Fridays, and not yanked and dumped to Saturdays (and airing 2 episodes in a row, which I hate very much).

Unfortunately, TAR is not on Hulu. None of the CBS shows are, which is too bad, because I think watching it on the CBS site is terrible. Constantly freezing up, and difficult to backtrack. I'd say, only use if you're watching the episode for a 2nd or 3rd time, because watching for the 1st time on the CBS site will just drive you mad.

Don't forget Last Man Standing will be compete with TAR this week, and a week from now, another ABC sitcom, Cristela, will also compete against TAR.

The L+3 boost basically brings the viewership up to the TAR24 average.  Which is still uncomfortably low.
Let's just hope that tonight's episode either retains the same viewers or even gains a few.

It's going up against sitcoms on NBC which are re-running today, Utopia on Fox, and it's closest competitor is Last Man Standing on ABC. Hope for the best!

That's an ok numerical increase, but try not to get too caught up in percentage numbers.  55% of a low number is still a low number.  One could make a similar argument for Utopia on that list. It increased 50%!!  But that's from a 0.8 to a 1.2, and Fox has already condensed that show down to one hour a week instead of 2 (it's performing horribly).

It's 1.7 L+3 number is about what it was doing in the Live overnight numbers in season 24.  So its still not a good drop, but CBS had to expect a drop moving to Fridays, so its all on whether or not its still acceptable numbers to the network.  Here's hoping more people are finding out its switched nights, and it can creep back upwards.

CBS itself uses the live plus seven data, and all the US broadcast nets are trying to push advertisers and media towards using those numbers instead of either live plus same day or live plus three days (plus other platform views in the seven day window.)

Ratings for last night were a little better than last week, but still not close to what they were on Sundays. Sorry about the formatting, but it never lines up right.

From zap2it.com

On CBS, The Amazing Race earned a 1.2, up 9 percent from a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating for last week’s premiere

Time    Net    Show                                           18-49 Rating/Sh    Total Viewers (Millions)

Well that's as good as we could have hoped for.  Gotta increase in small chunks.  And its certainly better than losing viewers, which many shows do after a premiere.  Hopefully next week we can push a 1.3

And just because networks are pushing the live plus seven numbers now, doesn't mean that they're all that important...yet.  Advertisers still go on the overnight 18-49 numbers, as 99% of people who watch on their DVR's are not watching any commercials.  If anything it would mean more in-show advertising (travelocity, Ford, etc).

Overall, week 2 numbers were decent after what we were given in the premiere.  And CBS is indeed trying, as there were a bunch of ads during Thursday night football for it.

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much, but zap2it.com had a article last week that said Madame Secretary (TARs Sunday night replacement) was a toss up as to whether it would be cancelled or not. The thinking was that CBS has a bunch of low rated shows, but the others have run for several years and can be syndicated with another season completed. Madame Secretary is new and can't do that. That said, Madame Secretary went from 1.4 to 1.7 in the ratings this week and had 12 million viewers, more than TAR did last year in the same time slot. Still, if Madame Secretary is cancelled, that would open the way for TAR to move back to Sunday evening. But, I wouldn't count on that happening.

Week 3 regressed to its premiere ratings, a 1.1 in the 18-49 demo.  So it appears that will be our new normal, somewhere in the 1.0 - 1.2 range.  I am hopeful that will be enough to ensure another season.  If it dips below that though, we're in big trouble. Hawaii 5-0 got a 1.3 and Blue Bloods a 1.2, so TAR isn't alone in pulling in low Friday ratings.  Sundays are also problematic for them, with no shows getting above a 1.7 or so at the moment.  So we shall see.

That appears to be the way things are going. Netflix/Hulu/whatever else have chomped up a big bit of TV numbers, On Demand has certainly changed the game.

The Major League Baseball playoffs started on Friday night, and some local markets are scheduling political debates for different state and local offices as well.

As to Premiere week, btw, the Live plus seven day data has come out today, and TAR's opening week numbers improved by 32 percent for total audience (from 5,519,000 to 7,275,000) and 64% for adults 18-54 (from 1.1 to 1.8 ).

That's definitely a very nice rating!  We now have a 1.1, 1.2, 1.1, and 1.4 so far (season 24 on Sundays got anywhere from a 1.5 to a 2.0, so to only be down a little bit in the Friday graveyard has to be seen as a good thing).  Furthermore, it was the second-highest rated show of the night, behind only Shark Tank.

That said, I'll try to temper expectations a little bit.  Next Friday, Fox will have Game 3 of the World Series.  The following Friday is Halloween.  So the next 2 weeks could face some serious challenges.  But for now, nothing wrong with feeling good about last night! (great episode too, wasn't it?)

I found the live + 7 data from both episode 2 (Sept 26 - England) and episode 3 (Oct. 3rd - Shetland Islands) and it looks like good news for TAR!

For episode 2, TAR had a 64% increase and raised the 18-49 rating from 1.1 to 1.8. This was good enough for 12th place for largest percentage rating increase for the week (Sept 22- Sept 28). They list two other tables, largest 18-49 numerical ratings increase or largest total viewers increase and TAR did not make the top 25 in either one.

I'll insert the appropriate tables here, but I know the formatting will be horrible since the column title are so long. Normally, I'd try to make it look nicer, but it looks hopeless. I think you will still be able to figure it out and see how TAR compares to the other shows.

25    Person Of Interest-09/30    CBS    1.8    2.8    1.0    56%

I don't know if this is a strictly valid assumption, but since TAR had 6.08 million viewers for week 2 in the final data and increased 64%, that would equal 9.97 million viewers. Episode 3 had 5.89 million viewers and increased by 58%, so that would be 9.31 million viewers. This is probably still not as good as on Sundays and other shows increased too, but overall, I find this hopeful news.

Thanks Plaid!

CBS had this to say:

THE AMAZING RACE
• THE AMAZING RACE was first in households (4.0/08), viewers (6.57m), adults 25-54 (2.0/07) and adults 18-49 (1.4/06) – the show’s season-best deliveries in these measures.

Down to a 1.0 rating last night, which is not a good drop.  Not totally unexpected, going against game 3 of the World Series, but more troubling is that it finished behind both Dateline on NBC, and the comedies on ABC.  Next week airs on Halloween, so I wouldn't expect great ratings then either.

And while the show gained a good percentage in DVR viewing, that's not a good metric to use.  Networks care about raw numbers, not percentages.  Look at all the shows that finished behind it in the chart - many of them gained more than the 0.7 that TAR did.  When the show's same-day rating is lower, it doesn't take a big DVR number to have a higher percentage than other shows (look at America's Next Top Model, which gained a whopping 0.2 ratings in Live +7, yet is 11th place for the week in percentage.  That said, its still good that people are realizing its on and watching it.  Just gotta get more people to watch live.

CBS also just extended all 4 of their new dramas, Madam Secretary, NCIS New Orleans, Stalker, and Scorpion, through the end of the season in May.  Undercover Boss is also supposed to take our Friday 8 pm slot.  Slots on the schedule are really at a premium.  So season 26, if it happens, may very well be next summer or fall.  I just hope it still exists.

I second this. Ratings are something I will never be able to comprehend.

Shouldn't expect much of an upward movement on Friday night with viewership either as TAR will air during Halloween + Dia de los Muertos ceremonies. As for the good broadcast news, be glad it won't compete against the ABC "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" tradition.

Season 26 won't be summer, it will be the usual winter/spring 2d cycle for the year.

(Source: TVLine.com's 2014-15 renewal lists for the 5 broadcast networks.) Y'all continue to operate under the incorrect impression that the overnight (Live plus same day) data means anything anymore.

It doesn't. CBS looks at live plus seven day plus alternative platforms, and at live plus 30 as well. The advertisers may still look at live plus three, but CBS and the other broadcast nets are leaning on the advertisers hard to go to the Live plus 7 data. They've got the research and projections methodology pretty well down pat. It is unlikely any freshman show on CBS is going to be cancelled; and for what it is worth, the original CSI in the 10pm Sunday night time slot is in more danger than any other show on the schedule.
The plan, for CBS this season, has been to run Undercover Boss between the two TAR cycles. They've figured out that show can't really get more than 10-13 episodes done in a year, and CBS doesn't even try to do so any longer.

Here's the DVR+7ratings for episode 4. TAR continues to show an impressive ratings increase each week due to DVR viewing. This week it was 64% among the 18-49 year old viewer, raising TAR from 1.1 to 1.8. This was the 19th best increase for the week and the best on Friday night.

Yikes, a 5 as the first number of viewership scares me, and not just because it was aired on Halloween night.

Again, those are the live plus same days figures; the information so far about live plus seven is that the numbers grow by 55 to 60 percent or more, which brings both numbers closer to the historical averages of 10 million total, and 3.0 demo.

CBS renewed Extant which rated lower than this series because of international profitability. I think its pretty safe to say that TAR will be fine in the long run. It's not a hugely expensive show, and they likely make a bit of money selling the rights to various countries, at least enough to offset the cost of having it.

TAR 26 being on Fridays is likely because CBS has no room in their schedule to place elsewhere because of the giving a full season to pretty much every new show they have that isn't doing awfully. Including Madam Secretary. I can't see TAR 27 staying on Fridays, CBS will try something new, because TAR just doesn't work on Friday.

I definitely don't see it returning to a regular weeknight, with one possible exception: If it performs very well after Survivor on the 26 premiere, there is definitely a possibility they could consider it.  If it premieres about in line with this season, despite having a nicely-rated and very compatible lead-in, then it will likely stay on Fridays for the duration of its run, whether that be 26, or beyond.

Just for comparison purposes to show the drop in ratings last friday with the Hollywood Film Awards showing instead of TAR:

                                                                           18-49 Rating/Share  Viewers (millions)
8:00    NBC    Dateline                                                    1.5/6            7.97
ABC    Last Man Standing                                    1.5/6            7.07
           FOX    MasterChef - R                                         0.6/2            1.77
CBS    The Hollywood Film Awards (8-10PM)       0.5/2            4.14
CW    Whose Line Is It Anyway                         0.5/2            1.66

I was going to post the same thing.  Also curious is that Last Man Standing was up a good amount with the lack of TAR...makes you wonder if there's crossover audience between the two and they cannibalize each other a bit.

Yeah -- even if I was worried about the audience on Fridays for TAR, it has more of an audience than the Hollywood Film Awards!

Ratings for episode 8 drew 6.06 million viewers with a 1.2/4 share. This was a down little from episode 7.

I will bet that the time shifted viewing will be up for this week because of the Thanksgiving Day holiday in the U.S. (Meaning a lot of people traveled for the 4 day holiday weekend (and many left during the previous weekend, especially with a major winter storm hitting the U.S. east coast just before the holiday.

From what I saw, a lot of the shows on the broadcast nets were lower Friday night, so it isn't just TAR that had this issue.

If the presumed time shifting within 7 days ratio of a 55 to 60 percent ratio from earlier this season holds true that would bring total audience within 7 days to about 10 million, which has traditionally been TAR's total audience for quite a number of seasons now.

It's especially impressive as CBS and Dish network had a dispute last Friday (since resolved) that caused CBS (and TAR) to be blacked out on Dish for some if not all parts of the country.

The local markets that were affected were the ones where CBS owns and operates a local CBS affiliate and only for those viewers who have a Dish subscription. So many or most viewers in those places weren't affected. lt so happens to be the cities where the new CBS app for network programming other than live sports is now available. Funny how that works, huh?
