Great fantasy is filled with adventure, challenges, discovery, fish out of water and good vs. evil — turns out, another modern genre shares these exact same traits.

Announcing “The Quest,” a reality show that will literally take contestants and audiences to an amazing, imaginative realm, where the ogres are advancing in the woods, the dragons are stirring, agents of a dark lord are infiltrating the keep, and the only thing that stands between peace and chaos are 12 very unlikely heroes.

From the producers of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, paired with the producers of “The Amazing Race,” “The Quest” will be a fully immersive experience. In and around this castle, our fantasy realm will come to life with state-of-the art projections, animatronics, prosthetics, real-time motion capture and art direction. The narrative and mythology of “The Quest” is deep and fully imagined, and it has been designed to incorporate seamlessly with the unexpected actions and decisions of our contestants – fantasy comes alive as it never has before in this genre-bending series.

Fantasy Meets Reality in ABC's The Quest

 Posted:  07/28/2014 11:54 am EDT
by Valerie Tejeda

If you've ever dreamed of living inside the magical world of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, or The Chronicles of Narnia, boy does ABC have a treat for you. Enter The Quest: a groundbreaking new fantasy/reality series that is set to change the face of reality television.

Hailed as The Amazing Race meets Lord of the Rings, the show is essentially a scripted fantasy world for unscripted reality contestants -- 12 to be exact -- who will be known throughout the series as paladins. The goal of the show is to find the one true hero who can save the kingdom of Everealm through a series of competitions and "quests."

"It is a reality competition show wrapped in the amazing fantasy world of The Quest," says producer Elise Doganieri.

Producer Rob Eric adds, "We take real people from this world and put them there for a very specific purpose: to help save a kingdom. It fit naturally."

When I caught up with four of The Quest's producers - Mark Ordesky, (Lord of the Rings), Jane Fleming (Lovely Molly), Elise Doganieri (The Amazing Race), and Rob Eric (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) -- I couldn't help but be in awe of their process, passion, and excitement for this series, which according to them, sparked during the making of a blockbuster film.

"Mark Ordesky and I both worked at New Line Cinema when Mark was producing Lord of the Rings, and during the pre-production, we used to get tapes of all of the actors at horse camp and sword camp and we thought, 'Why do the actors get to have all the fun?''' Jane Fleming explains. "Years later when we started the company (Court Five) that idea of, 'What if we could take real people and give them an opportunity to be in a fantasy realm?' Came back full circle."

"From that point we all came together and we developed this idea off the seed of that thought," Mark Ordesky says. "The Quest is a competition to help determine who the one true hero is, and only the one true hero can help save the kingdom."

And if you love fantasy books, films, and video games, rest assured, Everealm will not disappoint. There are dragons, ogres, castles, and myriad mythical creatures waiting to be discovered lurking in the shadows. With the goal of making The Quest as authentic as possible, the cast trained with swords and horses, learned archery, and acquired various other skills to prepare them to be the last paladin standing.

"Everything you yourself have ever dreamed of in a fairytale, we wanted it to be in this world," Rob says. "We wanted it to be as realistic as possible and we worked really hard to layer a world around them that looked real, that smelled real, that felt real, all so we could truly immerse them into this world."

While the producers strived for authenticity from the very beginning, it was their teamwork and shared vision that helped shape the project into perfection. "We all come from different backgrounds but somehow we magically work very well together," Elise says. "Everyone is so passionate about this project and we all respect each other."

This innovative new series brings otherworldly adventure that can be enjoyed by the whole family. "We really hope that this will span a whole new form of story telling," Jane says. "Get ready to sit back and be transformed into a whole new world. Enjoy the ride!"

Don't miss the season premiere of The Quest, this Thursday July 31 at 8|7c on ABC. And follow The Quest on Twitter for all the latest updates.

ABC's 'Game of Thrones'-Like Reality Show 'The Quest' Fully Explained

By Josh Dickey/Jun 12, 2014

The Quest: It's kind of the perfect summer reality TV show, especially for you Game of Thrones fans looking for a way to get through those otherwise empty "Winter is coming" months.

We've seen teases of ABC's fantasy/reality series, but this clip fully explains exactly what The Quest is going to be: 12 reality contestants, engaged in a real competition that's set in a scripted fantasy world of swords, crossbows and mythical creatures.

With ogres and dragons and goodness-knows-what-else lurking in the woods, contestants will be faced with all manner of fantasy-themed challenges as an epic tale unfolds around them, using real sets, scripted actors and some pretty startling practical special effects.

And The Quest has geek cred: One of its executive producers is Mark Ordesky, a producer on Peter Jackson's original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Other executive producers include Jane Fleming, Bertram van Munster (The Amazing Race and Cops), Elise Doganieri, Rob Eric and Michael Williams (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy).

Expect to see #thequest in your Twitter timeline when the show debuts July 31 at 8 p.m. ET.

Meet Mark Kohl Cinematographer of ABC’s “The Quest”

Innovative cinematographer Mark Kohl is changing the look of reality television with ABC’s innovative series, “The Quest”.

Mark Kohl is changing the face of cinematography in the hybrid world of scripted meets non-scripted with ABC’s hottest new series, “The Quest”.

A genre-bending new reality series unlike anything else on television, “The Quest,” combines harrowing and intense competition challenges, narrative storytelling and cutting edge special effects and prosthetics to conjure an immersive fantasy environment. 12 real people, pulled from their everyday lives, are transported to a fantasy world where they are declared Paladins, defenders of a noble cause. The Paladins must compete to save the besieged kingdom of Everealm but only one will prevail and earn the right to be called the One True Hero.

Kohl says, “We broke the mold of traditional competition shows. We aimed to create a cinematic scripted/reality hybrid that included CG animation and real contestants. The goal was to create a reality show that looked and felt like a fantasy movie. Working with actors and real contestants was something that had never been done before. It was like shooting a feature film and live television at the same time. The blend of reality and characters created the fantasy in the world of Everealm.”

“There is a fine balance between making things look too polished and produced to the point where the viewer stops believing it's real. We had to be mindful and create an experience that balances production value with story.”

Kohl continues, “There were a total of 9 cameras rolling continuously…we even dressed them to be a part of the scene. Also, I wanted to shoot this using full sensor digital cameras with cinema lenses. The cameras available were the alexa and the red, both of which are NOT really sustainable in the reality world because of their ergonomics. So months before I had heard about Sony coming out with the F55, and Fuji coming out with their 19-90 zoom lens that had a handgrip and servo zoom motor on it exactly like and ENG lens. The combination of the two (with a little tweaking), created a lightweight balanced handheld camera that was extremely fast. Perfect for reality and scripted. We were able to shoot in extreme low light situations quickly and easily.”

The Quest is summer’s best new reality show

by Andy Dehnart 31 Jul. 2014

Hybrid reality TV shows that combine unscripted interaction and fair competition inside a fictional context have significant hurdles to overcome. They must create a compelling story that can seamlessly contain reality elements that are authentic and not overly produced. From Murder in Small Town X to Pirate Master to Whodunnit, many shows have tried.

At long last, a show has succeeded in finding the right balance: ABC’s The Quest, which debuts tonight at 8 p.m. ET.

By episode three, The Quest proves it has mastered—and helped to further define—this reality television sub-genre, with each episode exponentially improving its mix of a well-c0nstructed world and reality competition. Its contestants have entered a fictional world, Everealm, where prophecy says that one of 12 people will be able to help save it. That sets up a nice context for a competition, yet it is not just a context in the way that Survivor’s remote locations host a game.

While The Quest is most certainly a game, there is no prize. While the contestants, known as Paladins, compete for both immunity and elimination, they do so in challenges that the are almost always organically integrated with the story. While the Paladins are definitely not acting nor being coached, they allow themselves to be fully immersed in the world—and buy in to what’s happening so much that at times I was frequently afraid that one person, Shondo, was going to punch an actor he feared was a true threat.

That immersion is made possibly by outstanding production design, including everything from the epic location (a real castle in Austria) to the background extras to the orchestration. Nearly all the impressive special effects are practical effects, occurring in real life for the contestants just as we see them on screen. That adds realism and heightens the experience for both them and us.

The Quest has three pairs of executive producers: The Amazing Race‘s Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri; former New Line Cinema executives Jane Fleming and Mark Ordesky, who worked on Lord of the Rings among other films; and Queer Eye‘s Rob Eric and Michael Williams. (Tomorrow, look for my Q&A with them.) Two of The Blair Witch Project’s creators assisted with the mythology and story.

Their sensibilities all mesh perfectly here, which is a remarkable achievement by itself. There’s The Amazing Race’s early challenges and cinematic immersion in a foreign land; the epic scope and believable fantasy of Lord of the Rings; and Queer Eye‘s unfiltered interaction of strong personalities.

The producers are, of course, backed by a crew that has done strong and mostly invisible work throughout. The show ends up feeling like a film, not a typical glossy ABC reality series.

The actors sell the fictional universe, though there are some weak spots, such as the comically awkward actor who plays one of the three Fates. However, Peter Windhofer, who plays Sir Ansgar, is truly exceptional; people have won Emmys for less-convincing performances. That is superlative, but his performance is so committed that I frequently forget he’s an actor playing a role, in the same way that I often forget the clones in Orphan Black are all played by the incredible Tatiana Maslany. Windhofer and others advance the story, narrate to viewers, and improvise with the contestants, sometimes simultaneously.

Although Whodunnit was airing last summer while The Quest was filming, some of its best parts can be found here. To begin, there is a certain suspension of disbelief required on the part of viewers and contestants, though less of one than is required by a murder mystery by a motive-less killer. Frequently dramatic cliffhangers conclude each episode, and besides challenges and eliminations, the only visible conceit borrowed from other reality competitions is inserts from sit-down interviews.

ABC is preceding each episode with a brief, 25-second behind-the-scenes clip that essentially serves as a disclaimer—no surprise considering that, last summer, people thought Whodunnit was actually killing its contestants. I understand why a hybrid show with no host may need some explanation, yet that segment doesn’t seem obvious enough to explain what this is to those people who need to be told contestants didn’t really die last summer. The disclaimer ended up pulling me out of the narrative, reminding me that there were cameras and actors, when I wanted to give myself in to the idea that this was a real place in which these actual real people are doing actually real things.

Watching Survivor for the first time was an experience that inspired awe, its high quality and rich storytelling creating a new world that drew from familiar elements. That’s how The Quest feels, and it builds in a similar way, with the context and contestants continually offering epic surprises.

Behind the scenes of The Quest

Producers discuss how the ABC reality series was created

by Andy Dehnart 1 Aug. 2014

A few weeks ago, I talked with four of The Quest’s producers–Jane Fleming, Mark Ordesky, Rob Eric, and Elise Doganieri–to learn more about its production, which occurred last summer in Austria. Here are highlights from that conversation.

Where it was filmed
Kreuzenstein Castle is a privately owned castle in Austria, north of Vienna, which previously served as a filming location for Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch. The production considered 1,500 different castles; some were just facades, while others had roads or businesses adjacent to them. This location worked in part because it was surrounded by 70 acres of woods. Because there was no electricity or running water, nor any other structures on the property, Doganieri said “we had this container village” built nearby for production; it had air conditioning, electricity, catering, and everything else the producers needed.

The contestants’ immersion
Contestants wore microphones every day, but those were attached by people in costume because producers and other crew wore costumes to blend in with the extras in the castle and elsewhere. Thus, the only truly visible crew members were camera operators, who wore black.

Producers didn’t speak to the contestants, and when there was a need to tell the cast something, that was done in character as part of the story (for example, a soldier might explain how to perform a challenge). The contestants were constantly kept in the world of the story, and while they were guided by the actors, they weren’t coached to behave in any way (Doganieri said, “There was no prodding [by producers], ‘Why don’t you talk about this?’”), so everything that occurs is organic.

Why there’s no prize
“We debated it; I was a fan of a prize because I’m a crass commercialist,” Fleming joked. But because the story and its conclusion occurs in a fictional universe, “We really couldn’t figure out what the prize was: Do you give them a bucket of gold? Do you give them a car? It was so weird.” Rob Eric said the experience was enough for the contestants–and for those who applied for season two at FantasyCon recently. “You spend your entire life wanting to live a fairy tale, you spend your whole life wanting to be a hero and to rise above … that’s what they cared about,” he said. “It was prize enough.”

The first night
The first eight minutes of the first episode was an entire night in the woods for the cast, who arrived at the castle at sunrise. “They got chased by things, we were all hiding,” Fleming said. “There’s a second visit from the ogre, they have to hide, they had a real night.”

Attention to detail and special effects
Jane Fleming said the production designer they used is “a genius” and “knew how to make the challenges look right.” She also said the production had the advantage of “Queer Eye for the Castle Guy” because Rob Eric, who previously produced the Bravo series, “checked every costume before it got to set,” and also paid attention to details such as actors’ fingernails.

Nearly all of the special effects are practical, and Eric said that’s to keep the cast in the world. “If we’re going to do this, magic has to happen in front of them, because we don’t want to pull back and do what you do in a typical movie, where we would put green screen–we wanted it to happen real,” he said.

Casting and rehearsing with the actors
It took months to cast the actors, in part because they were casting in Europe and needed people who not only spoke English, but also “had to be very good at improv,” Doganieri said, because of the possibility of unexpected interaction or questions. (Some who came in for casting had resumes that said they were fluent in English but then couldn’t speak the language at all.) Producers “wrote story bibles for each of the characters,” Fleming told me, so the actors knew their characters’ backstory and arcs. They did rehearsals for about a week before the contestants arrived, but mostly rehearsed upcoming scenes between competitions using stand-ins to try to predict how the contestants would react, not unlike Survivor‘s use of the Dream Team.

How Sir Ansgar was chosen
“He was the hardest role to cast,” Rob Eric said, since he plays a central role. While Eric found Peter Windhofer immediately, the process of going back and forth with the network took time, and after casting in places from Germany to London, they ended up hiring him the day before on location pre-production started. “He was meant to be Ansgar.” Overall, Doganieri said the actors loved the combination of scripted storytelling and improvisation: “Sometimes actors are not sure about reality television; these actors loved this.”

The length of production
The entire series was shot in 25 days, slightly longer than The Amazing Race and slightly shorter than a season of Survivor. Fleming said it was filmed “a lot like an indie feature.” The producers whose background was in film were amazed at how quickly the production moved through the script.

What they learned from other hybrid reality shows
Producers wanted to “create an environment where could transform,” Ordesky said. “You’re basically taking real people … and they’re operating on a stage that isn’t real life.” Eric added, “We learned that you needed to make the world real, and you needed texture. You can’t just throw a bandana on somebody and say you’re a pirate.”

From other shows, Fleming said they realized “we never wanted to put our Paladins in a position to pretend that somebody died or to pretend that something would happen. The competition grounds the whole thing,” she said. “To talk about the context of saving a kingdom is very different than to pretend somebody died. We were very careful in all of our storytelling, and actually threw down a few times with each other … whatever’s happening in front of them has to be plausible within this world.”

“What we didn’t want was these contestants acting, because that would have been a disaster,” Fleming said.

How six executive producers worked together
“You would think, six EPs, we would all hate each other. We love each other,” Rob Eric said, and the other producers agreed. That was not “Hollywood bull****,” he added, “we actually worked incredibly well together, and every single one of us has brought our A-game to this show, and I think it shows. We literally just worked our ass off.” Jane Fleming added, “We ended up, all six, dealing with every single aspect” of the production.

The genesis of the idea
The show began as Fleming and Ordesky, a producer of Lord of the Rings, watched footage of “Orlando Bloom doing archery” during training, and “it looked like so much fun.” They were later pitched what they called “a lame idea” but that prompted them to come up with the idea for the series. Because “we know what we don’t know,” Fleming said, they went to Eric and his producing partner, and later–about four years ago–brought Elise Doganieri and Betram van Munster on board. Doganieri said the show “had a little bit of the feeling of Race where it was something that we knew it was almost impossible to do, but we love that challenge.” The story was created from scratch.

Possible future seasons
Producers have ideas for season two, and created the first season with the possibility of future seasons in mind. “We wanted to have a world that was scalable,” Fleming said. “We wanted to start in one kingdom. We have 12 kingdoms, so we have at least 12 seasons.” In addition, they expressed hope that this format could be used in other genres, such as sci-fi, or even with existing brands. (That made me think of something like Star Trek: The Reality Series.)

How the producers felt about the first season
The producing team is thrilled with the 10 hours of television they crafted. “Intention meeting reality, that doesn’t happen all the time,” Ordesky said. Fleming said, “We believe that viewers are craving quality and something good-natured.”

I don't think ABC will do so because ABC invested a lot of money in this show. They didn't expect the ratings would slump like this.
I stick to the two-episode rumor.

Nielson Ratings data for Thursday night

:ascared  the numbers don't look good IMO, but then again I watch "Hollywood Game Night" religiously.   :snicker:   :funny:

Maybe a different way of looking at the ratings?

The Quest (8-9pm - 2.8 million and 0.6/3 in AD18-49): At 8pm, ABC's The Quest gained 27% week to week in Total Viewers (2.8 million vs. 2.2 million) and held steady in Adults 18-49 (0.6/3).

Still have to watch the finale episode, but I liked the premise of it overall! I would still lean to prefer Whodunnit if it's a choice between the two (which I know it's not necessarily.)
