If they run the leg in the AM, then departure could be Monday early instead. And what non European destination pops out? Istanbul! Or go via Frankfurt anywhere...

Actually the airport in Istanbul is in Europe........but just by a few miles. But there are lots of other major airports to connect for very long distance flights.......Frankfurt as you mentioned, Munich, Amsterdam, London Heathrow, Paris DeGaule, and Moscow.

Malta is strange airport......lots more activity on Sunday than on Monday.

The German gov continues to expand the Munich airport to relieve pressure on Frankfurt.

Sorry guys, I've got a bit of catching up to do. Still working on Leg 4 here!

Freya has Nici/Shelley arriving at Copenhagen on 7 Jun. There's clock behind that reads either 12:30 or 6:05. Now Freya had just arrived from Vienna, which means she landed at either 8:28am, 8:58am, 5:05pm, 7:17pm, or 9:51pm. Matching the two lists gives us 6:05pm as the only likely timing.

This jives somewhat with this photo of Misti/Jim in Malmo by Emma, which judging from the shadows (pointing due East) was taken at around 6:00pm.

We know teams didn't leave by ferry from the Shetlands on the night of 5 Jun, nor take a flight leaving the Shetlands before the morning of 7 Jun, as they would have arrived in Copenhagen much, much earlier than 6:00pm on 7 Jun.

It is possible to fly from Sumburgh in the Shetlands into Copenhagen and make it by the time they were spotted in Copenhagen and Malmo:

Option 1
Sumburgh to Aberdeen, 0845-0945
Aberdeen to Amsterdam, 1100-1335
Amsterdam to Copenhagen, 1440-1600 (actual arrival 1610), or
Amsterdam to Copenhagen, 1555-1715 (actual arrival 1742)

Option 2
Sumburgh to Aberdeen, 0845-0945
Aberdeen to London Heathrow, 1120-1255
London Heathrow to Copenhagen, 1405-1700 (actual arrival 1657), or
London Heathrow to Copenhagen, 1430-1720 (actual arrival 1800)

Option 3
Sumburgh to Aberdeen, 0845-0945
Aberdeen to Frankfurt, 1210-1515
Frankfurt to Copenhagen, 1630-1755 (actual arrival 1750)

Option 4
Sumburgh to Bergen, 1155-1405
Bergen to Copenhagen, 1600-1720 (actual arrival 1725)

I don't like this because Options 1-3 utilise the same Loganair flight from Sumburgh to Aberdeen, which uses a 30-36 seater Saab 340. (DrRox, I'm getting the info from FlightStats. Did you have a different source?) There are a minimum of 8 teams left at this point (32 passengers). Would they all be able to make it out of the Shetlands?

Instead, production could have teams take the ferry back to Aberdeen (1730-0700), and avail themselves of Options 1-3. A really quick team might even be able to get on this:

Option 5
Ferry from Lerwick to Aberdeen, 1730-0700
Aberdeen to London Heathrow, 0830-1005
London Heathrow to Copenhagen, 1225-1520 (actual arrival 1531)

Conclusion: While it is possible that teams flew out of the Shetlands, I think it's most likely that they took a ferry from Lerwick to Aberdeen on the night of 6 Jun, and flew out of Aberdeen on the morning of 7 Jun, arriving in the late afternoon.

Neobie....

I was using Sat June 6 as the date to fly out of Sumburgh. I was basing my timeline on when this photo was posted      June 7 @ 11:44 am.

Neobie: Could there have been two flights out of Sumburgh to Aberdeen that would have used the same flight from Aberdeen to Copenhagen? Or could there have been producer-provided flight tickets to force teams onto only certain flights to Copenhagen out of either Sumburgh or Aberdeen?
The other question that has to be resolved is whether Phil, Bertram, et al, could have gotten a June 6th or very early June 7th flight out of Sumburgh to make it to Copenhagen and Malmo sufficiently ahead of the teams?
Ain't this enough to give one a headache! :)

I think Webstagram uses your computer's local time to determine the timestamp on photos. For example, Freya's latest post, which was posted "21h" ago, shows up on my computer as posted at "2014-06-16 9:51". (I'm on Eastern Summer Time.)

The timestamp on the Copenhagen airport photo shows "2014-06-07 12:44" for me. This translates to 6:44pm on 7 June, which fits perfectly into a 6:05pm sighting. (It also betrays that DrRox, you're on Central Summer Time!)

As far as I can tell there was only one flight from Sumburgh to Aberdeen, on a Saab 340, that fits into our current timeframe. The next flight via Aberdeen into Copenhagen arrives at 11:05pm!

It is possible that there were producer-provided tickets from Sumburgh to Copenhagen. From Aberdeen to Copenhagen I think it's less neessary; it's relatively easy to get from Aberdeen to some other hub to connect to Denmark.

Here's a possible itinerary (out of many) for Phil:
Race starts at 7:30am on 5 June at Lerwick.
Leg ends by mid-afternoon.
LOG 6781 from Sumburgh to Aberdeen, 5/1940-2040
KL 1440 from Aberdeen to Amsterdam, 6/0600-0840
KL 1127 from Amsterdam to Copenhagen, 0940-1100

Alternatively, if he wants to spend the night on the Shetlands:
LOG 6771 from Sumburgh to Aberdeen, 6/0825-0925
KL 1444 from Aberdeen to Amsterdam, 1100-1335
KL 1131 from Amsterdam to Copenhagen, 1555-1715
Which still gives Phil a full day ahead of the teams.

Flights to Manila (via Peach):

Tigerair (TR) 2726, from Singapore to Manila, 1750-2130

Other possibilities:
Singapore Airlines (SQ) 918, from Singapore to Manila, 1925-2300

Being a Filipino, Manila's international airport has three terminals. Terminal one serves most international airlines, terminal two serves only Philippine Airlines including its subsidiary PAL Express, while terminal three serves Cebu Pacific, ANA and AirAsia Zest. There is a smaller terminal 4, which serves regional airlines.

It would seem that the first flight (DL 284) was the flight that prompted the first live LAX tweet this morning. The question is what flight from Manila to Narita connected with that flight that fits with when the teams were seen at the airport in Manila.

I was digging a little on the previous tweets from the girl of the first sighting, and she was in Australia. Apparently she was traveling there and into PNG. She mentioned going to Brisbane before returning to the US. :duno:

British Airways (BA) 818, LHR-CPH, 1513-1800 (scheduled 1430-1720)

Shelley & Nici
KLM (KL) 1446, ABZ-AMS, 1312-1542 (scheduled 1310-1545)
KLM Cityhopper (WA) 1133, AMS-CPH, 1705-1818 (scheduled 1705-1820)*

I think these two are wrong. My reasons:
* There were only two delayed flights into Copenhagen which fits what we are shown and told:  KL1131and BA818
* The teams do not seem to arrive on the same flight
* We see Shelly & Nici board a BA flight

Therefore I think the real flights were:

Tim & Te Jay
 KL1444 ABZ-AMS 10:47 - 13:18 (scheduled 11:00 - 13:35)
 KL1131 AMS-CPH 16:31 - 17:52 (scheduled 15:55 - 17:15)

Shelley & Nici
 BA1307 ABZ-LHR 11:36 - 13:24 (scheduled 11:20 - 12:55)
 BA818  LHR-CPH 15:13 - 18:00 (scheduled 14:30 - 17:20)
