TORONTO, July 16, 2013 /CNW/ - CTV's THE AMAZING RACE CANADA is the country's newest blockbuster hit TV series. Following an unprecedented promotion and publicity campaign, the much-anticipated series premiere smashed records last night with an amazing audience of 3 million viewers on CTV. It was the highest-rated series premiere of a Canadian series ever, and the most-watched series debut overall in nearly a decade, since CSI: NY premiere to 3.2 viewers in 2004. The premiere of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA becomes the most-watched Canadian entertainment program since the CORNER GAS finale drew 3 million viewers in April 2009. Overall, five million unique viewers watched the premiere, with the audience growing throughout the broadcast to peak at 3.5 million viewers when host Jon Montgomery revealed that Treena and Tennille had been eliminated from the first leg of the race. The episode is available now on demand across CTV's digital platforms, including CTV.ca, the CTV App, the CTV Mobile channel on Bell Mobile TV, and through video on demand partners such as Bell Fibe TV, and premieres tonight on TSN at 12 midnight ET/PT.

2.790 million viewers for Episode 7 in Nunavut. Again number one for the night and week and by a pretty significant margin over second place.

Episode 8 drew 2.789 million viewers (down 0.001) from the week below, not bad considering it was a national holiday.

Once again first in its time slot and first overall during the week of September 2-8.

3.6 Million Canadians Watch The Tims Become First THE AMAZING RACE CANADA Champions on CTV

Just like it began, THE AMAZING RACE CANADA has ended on a high, capping an amazing, record-breaking first season. With delayed viewing data still to come, last night’s dramatic season finale attracted a preliminary overnight audience of 3.1 million viewers on CTV, an overnight series high for the program. Renewed last night for a second season, the first season of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA has now been watched by nearly one in two Canadians (16 million viewers).

Among the highlights from last night’s thrilling Season 1 finale:

More than 3.6 million viewers tuned at 9:58 p.m. ET to see Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. win the race following a game-changing Road Block, while more than 4.6 million Canadians watched some part of the one-hour broadcast.
More than one in four English-language Canadians watching TV last night were tuned in to THE AMAZING RACE CANADA.
The broadcast was overwhelmingly the #1 program of the night, with one million more viewers than its closest competitor.
The finale delivered double-digit ratings in Toronto, ranging from 10.6 for A18-34 to 10.3 and 10.4 for A18-49 and A25-54 respectively.
With a reach of more than eight million mentions in the 24 hours leading into the premiere, there were close to 4,000 mentions on Twitter last night.
CTV’s live after show special AFTER THE RACE delivered 1.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched Bell Media in-house production ever.
“THE AMAZING RACE CANADA has captured the imaginations of viewers across the country, introducing Canadians to elements of their country that they had never known before, while setting a new benchmark for Canadian television series,” said Phil King, President, CTV Programming and Sports.

THE AMAZING RACE CANADA currently* has an average audience of 3.33 million viewers each week, making it the most watched Canadian series on record.

'Amazing Race Canada' Outpaces Rival U.S. Reality Series With Debut Season

The local version of the global franchise was bigger than the launches of "Survivor," "American Idol," "Big Brother" and even CBS' "Amazing Race" series, which airs here.

TORONTO – Popular American reality series like American Idol and Survivor have long been among the most successfully exported shows by U.S. suppliers into the Canadian market.

ABC Partners With 'Amazing Race' Duo for Fantasy Competition Series
But now CTV's Amazing Race Canada, which ended its first season run on Monday night with the father and son team of Tim Hague Sr. and Jr. winning the local competition, has had the biggest debut season ever for a reality TV franchise on Canadian TV.
Amazing Race Canada, which had an average first season audience of 3.3 million viewers, was bigger, ratings-wise, than the first season debuts of Survivor, American Idol, Big Brother, X Factor and even CBS' Amazing Race series, which has aired for 21 seasons here on CTV.
The Canadian version of the international TV franchise debuted with 3.5 million viewers earlier this summer and managed to hold its audience during the first season run.
"The Amazing Race Canada has captured the imaginations of viewers across the country, introducing Canadians to elements of their country that they had never known before, while setting a new benchmark for Canadian television series," said Phil King, president of CTV programming and sports, after Monday night's finale.
Amazing Race Canada is a local version from Insight Productions of the reality TV franchise created by Profiles Television's Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri.
And it ended its rookie season as the second-highest rated TV show on Canadian TV, behind top-rated The Big Bang Theory, which also airs on CTV.
CTV-parent Bell Media has already greenlit a second season of Amazing Race Canada, based on the format acquired from Disney-ABC Domestic Television.
Despite that local success, American reality series continue to dominate Canadian primetime, with the 27th season of CBS' Survivor franchise to debut here tonight on Global Television.
