The Bachelorette 9: Desiree Hartsock

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' season premiere
by Chris Harrison
Oh, how good it feels to be back. If we had to pick a theme for the first night we would have to have to steal a page from Jeopardy! and go with the category “Names That Begin With ‘M’ or ‘B’.” The season started off a little differently with Desiree; it’s important to know where she came from so you can fully appreciate and understand where this journey will take her. I enjoyed the more casual style of starting out by sitting down to talk with Des at her house. It definitely put her at ease and made her more emotionally available and open. I could tell she was genuinely excited to be the Bachelorette and truly ready to find love.
The arrivals are always just a bit awkward but it seems even more so when it’s the Bachelorette and it’s a bunch of guys piling out of the limos. Guys are just completely out of their comfort zone. Some of the highlights from my perspective that night were, of course, Zak who arrived shirtless and asked Des if she would accept his abs. Despite later stripping down and diving in the pool, Zak got a rose. (It’s worth noting that Des had a tough time figuring out where to put it.)
Larry went with the dance move. At this point we’ve been on network television for over a decade. One thing that never ever works well is picking up or spinning a woman in a full-length formal gown. It’s always a disaster, yet each season some guy gets out of the limo and tries to make it work… It doesn’t… ever! Despite history being against him, Larry went for it and spun his way right off the show.
Then there was Diogo, the Knight in Shining Armor. This probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but in reality a suit of armor is hot, heavy, and not really easy to move in. Maybe the boldest, riskiest move came from Ben, who arrived with his son, Brody. At first I thought this idea could easily be a disaster, but as you saw, Brody was absolutely adorable and it turned out to be the most impressive romantic arrival of the night. More importantly, it really made an impression on Des and she ended up giving Ben the first rose of the season.
The cocktail party was business as usual; it was a stream of guys vying for attention and time with Des. But then there was Jonathan. Jonathan had already shot himself in the foot during his arrival when he gave Des his own version of a fantasy suite card. Jonathan should have known better. You don’t try to step in and steal my moves, especially on the first night. Instead of making things better once he got time with her, Jonathan decided to push the issue and shoot himself in the other foot by trying to get Des to go to some sort of homemade fantasy suite in the house. Des quickly shot him down and you could tell she was really bothered and more than just a little creeped out by this guy. This should have been the end of it, but Jonathan, who apparently isn’t very good at reading a woman, took one more shot at getting Des alone in a back room in the house. This officially skeeved Des out so much she had had enough and sent Jonathan home right then and there.
We did learn a few things here. First, Des is more than capable of taking care of herself. I loved how she shut the guy down and sent him packing. The other thing we learned is that Jonathan’s mom thinks he’s good looking and he has a full “love tank.” If any of you know exactly what a “love tank” is, feel free to write in and let me know.
By the time the night came to an end, the creeper, the dancer, the magician, and the knight were all sent home. That first night is always just a jumping off point for what’s to come. You got a taste of what Des is in for this season, and let me tell you, in my opinion, this is one of the best seasons we’ve ever had. Des was great about really opening herself up and being vulnerable going through this. That’s really the only way this thing works but unfortunately it also opens you up to the possibility of getting hurt. Next week the dates begin, and so does the drama. These guys start falling for Des quickly and the battle for her time and attention gets intense. I’m incredibly glad to be back on the air with another season and grateful so many of you have come back to take this journey with us.
I promise it’s an amazing ride that we’ll be talking about all summer long. I’ll be back here next week but you can always keep up with me via Twitter and Instagram @chrisbharrison.

ABC press release:
LOVE DEVELOPS ATOP THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN, SOULJA BOY TEAMS WITH
DESIREE AND THE BACHELORS FOR A ROCKIN' RAP MUSIC VIDEO, AND SOME
OF THE MEN DISPLAY THEIR VULNERABILITY IN THE RACE FOR ROSES,
ON ABC'S "THE BACHELORETTE"
R&B Pop-Rock Singer Andy Grammer Performs in a VIP Private Concert
Sparks Fly Between the 19 Remaining Men as They Jockey for Desiree's Time and Attention
"Episode 902" - A bridal shop provides the unlikely backdrop for Desiree's first one-on-one date with the tall, dark and handsome Brooks; rap superstar Soulja Boy carefully crafts an aptly named rap music video - "Right Reasons" - using Desiree and a group of slick bachelors; and Bryden is treated to a scenic, romantic road trip up the beautiful California coast. But some of the men are already fighting for Desiree's love and nearly come to blows. After careful deliberation, three men are sent packing as the Bachelorette attempts to make her fairytale come true, on "The Bachelorette," MONDAY, JUNE 3 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.
Brooks is ecstatic when he gets the first date of the season, complete with Desiree driving them through the streets of Los Angeles in her baby blue Bentley. Making their first stop at a bridal shop, Desiree tries on lavish wedding gowns while Brooks looks dapper in a number of tuxedos. That is just the beginning of the whimsical date, as the Bachelorette decides that they should remain dressed like the top of a wedding cake throughout the date. After a quick stop at a cupcake truck, it's up to an exclusive seat high atop the world-famous Hollywood sign, which is celebrating its 90th year. For first time ever, a platform is built on the letter "L" for the couple to share their time together there. Over a romantic dinner, Brooks gets emotional as he shares unpleasant details of his parents' divorce. But the evening ends on a hot note when the couple share a first kiss as they slow dance at a private concert by singer-songwriter Andy Grammer. Will passion be enough to get Brooks a rose?
The next day 14 men join Desiree at a swank Malibu mansion to star in a rap music video appropriately titled "Right Reasons" with superstar rapper Soulja Boy. He carefully selects his rapping proteges to each play the part of an infamous man from past seasons. There's Wes from Jillian Harris' season, Justin and Kasey from Ali's season, and one bachelor even reprises Jason Mesnick's legendary tearful collapse. Desiree gets into the act, rapping about her journey to find the perfect man. However at the after party the competition heats up, with Ben interrupting Mikey's alone time with the Bachelorette, sparking the first confrontation of the season. Meanwhile, Brandon opens up about his tragic broken childhood. Will displaying his deep vulnerability earn him the group date rose or will it be a turn-off?
Bryden nets the last individual date this week and a scenic road trip up the California coast that takes them to their final destination, the posh Ojai Valley Inn and Spa. At an intimate dinner, Desiree's date relates a story about an accident that changed his life forever. The evening ends in a steamy hot tub with some passionate kisses, but will Desiree need more than this macho man has to offer?
At a tense, pressure-packed cocktail party, the men battle each other for time with Desiree before she makes her decisions, and two come close to duking it out. Meanwhile, another bachelor tries to reassure Desiree that he's ready to spend the rest of his life with her even though he had some problems with his last relationship.
At the end of the night after a dramatic rose ceremony, 16 men will be left to vie for Desiree's heart.
The 19 remaining men are:
Ben, 29, an entrepreneur from Dallas, TX
Brad, 27, an accountant from Denver, CO
Brandon, 26, a painting contractor from Costa Mesa, CA
Brian, 29, a financial advisor from Baltimore, MD
Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Bryden, 26, an Iraq War veteran from Missoula, MT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA
Dan, 30, a beverage sales director from Las Vegas, NV
Drew, 27, a digital marketing analyst from Scottsdale, AZ
James, 27, an advertising executive from Chicago, IL

LoveRocked:
Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 2
by Chris Harrison
I hope all of you are about to read this for the right reasons. I also hope that this week none of you decided to take a shot every time you heard that phrase, because if you did, you are not going to have a good Tuesday or probably Wednesday either.
Before I dive into this hip-hop episode I want to answer a couple questions I got from your comments. Somebody asked how the guys spend their days when they’re not with Des on dates. Well, they do what they want around the house — hang out by the pool, work out, sleep or all of the above. Another question was about whether the guys or the girls are cleaner as a group. This is tough because it really depends on the season, but overall it’s surprising to note that the men are cleaner. Maybe it’s not as much of a surprise because the women pack much more stuff, and don’t get me started on the state of the bathroom when the ladies are in the house. There are times when the guys aren’t much better, but ladies you win this battle — or lose it actually.
The first date this season was a one-on-one with Brooks. This may have been the coolest first date we have ever had on this show. After what could have been an awkward stop at the bridal shop (what first date doesn’t start there?), Brooks and Des got to experience something few people ever will: Sitting on the actual Hollywood sign and enjoying a picnic. We were very thankful to get the opportunity to use that location. I have to give major props to our crew for setting up the bridge experience for them as well. And to top it all off, the talented Andy Grammer was there to put on a private show. As incredible as this date was, I honestly think these two could have gone and done anything and had an amazing time. They hit it off immediately. You can clearly see that Des and Brooks have a serious physical and emotional attraction — the big question now is will Brooks suffer the first date curse? Having that first date is great but now he has to sit back and watch all the other guys get their turn to date her and come home talking about their connection. He will have to stay strong to avoid falling victim to the curse.
The group date took place in one of my favorite locations here in Los Angeles and it happens to be less than a mile from the Bachelor mansion, Malibu Rocky Oaks Winery. This house, or castle, is one of the most beautiful in all of LA and it provided the perfect backdrop for our hip-hop video “Right Reasons.” (Watch the full video here.) I want to personally thank Soulja Boy for being such an amazing sport. I also want to personally apologize for subjecting him to such pitiful hip-hop skills. Seriously though, he was incredible to work with and hang out with all day. He really seemed to enjoy the idea and dove right in making everybody comfortable. There are few things that stood out to me on this date besides our horrible hip-hop skills. I said last week Zak W. would redeem himself and you can already see why. He’s much more than the dude who showed up with no shirt on. Brandon really opened up to Des in a major way, but it was a lot to take in. Too much, too soon? You also got to see that the loveable dad, Ben, is starting to rub the guys the wrong way.
A quick note on Bryden and his one-on-one date with Des: The date was great and very easy. Des puts everybody at ease. She’s very easy to sit and converse with, and there’s something about her that makes these guys feel comfortable about opening up and getting personal. That’s a great quality in a woman and these guys love it. What really impressed me about Des on this date is how she handled the awkwardness. Bryden obviously wanted to kiss her, but he either was too nervous or he couldn’t read the signs. Either way, Des took the situation into her own hands and said, “Just kiss me already!” I loved how she took what could have been an awkward moment and made it easy and fun. She took all the pressure off the guy and put it on herself — that was a classy move.
As you can see the guys are really starting to fall for Des and the competition has begun. Ben has started getting under people’s skin and he almost seems to relish it, like it’s a game to him. This will continue in the weeks to come. You may have also noticed that I brought a guest into the house. To borrow a phrase from this week, somebody is not here for the right reasons — and boy do we have proof! It’s not a pretty scene, but it’s one that you must see because I promise you everybody will be talking about it next week. I warn you to buckle up because these first two episodes were child’s play compared to what’s to come. From here on out, it’s a ride unlike any of us have ever been on. The one thing I can promise you is that each and every week, not only am I here for you, but I’m here for the right reasons! Talk to me at @chrisbharrison.

ABC press release:
NEXT WEEK ON ABC'S THE BACHELORETTE (6/10)
IN ONE OF THE MOST EXPLOSIVE SHOWDOWNS IN BACHELORETTE HISTORY,
DESIREE CONFRONTS ONE MAN WHO IS NOT THERE FOR THE "RIGHT REASONS,"
AN AGGRESSIVE DODGEBALL GROUP DATE SENDS SOMEONE TO THE ER,
AND A ONE-ON-ONE DATE GOES FROM BAD TO WORSE, ON "THE BACHELORETTE"
Singer Kate Earl Performs in a VIP Private Concert, and in a "Bachelorette" First,
Desiree Wears a Stunning Gown She Designed Herself to the Rose Ceremony
"Episode 903" - Desiree ups the ante on a winner-takes-all game of dodgeball with a group of the men, but things turn ugly quickly when a massive pileup ends with someone making a trip to the ER. Kate Earl serenades the Bachelorette and one the men with some touching love songs in a special performance. A death-defying individual date with Kasey goes awry, morphing from a fantasy into a nightmare. Roping and riding take center stage as the stunt coordinator for Disney's "The Lone Ranger" shows some of the guys the ins and outs of being a cowboy. However, it is Chris Harrison's surprise call to Desiree that starts a wild chain reaction: It's revealed that one deceptive man not only has ulterior motives for being there, but has a girl friend to boot! Desiree's firestorm of emotion makes her question all the remaining men. Is her Cinderella story about to crash and burn? "The Bachelorette airs MONDAY, JUNE 10 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Desiree pulls out all the stops and brings in the pros from the National Dodgeball League to teach the guys how to take their game to the next level. After a spirited practice session, the blue team of bachelors takes on the red team at the Americana in Los Angeles. The clash of titans ends up in an enormous heap, sending one person to the ER with a broken bone. How will this affect that night's after-party? Chris sweeps Desiree off her feet and sparks begin to fly. The two escape for a private concert under the stars by soul/pop/gospel singer Kate Earl.
Desiree is blown away when Chris Harrison informs her that one of the men is definitely not there for "the right reasons" and that, in fact, he left a girlfriend back at home to participate on the series. A total shocker follows when the guy's girlfriend shows up unannounced. All hell breaks loose and a very visceral confrontation ensues. Can Desiree trust any of the other bachelors? How will she decide who is sincere?
Then it's time for a one-on-one date with Kasey who is determined to show the Bachelorette what love should be about. Their time together begins with the unusual dance troupe, "Bandaloop." These artists dance on the side of skyscrapers using a special trapeze rigging. They teach Desiree and Kasey tricks they'll need in preparation for their guest star appearance. But it is not as easy as it seems and things quickly go south, making it one of the most calamitous dates in "Bachelorette" history.
A sudden windstorm later ruins what is supposed to be a romantic rooftop dinner. Will Kasey recover to get a rose?
Five lucky, rugged guys are schooled in the fine art of cowboy stunts and tricks by the stunt coordinator on Disney's eagerly awaited upcoming release, "The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. They'll be competing for a chance to win a seat next to Desiree in an advanced VIP screening of the movie, in theaters on July 3. One hero-in-training steals Desiree's heart with his fancy roping and stuntman skills. Who will be the Bachelorette's "Lone Ranger?" But a group date rose is still at stake at the after-party, and one of the men will impress Desiree enough to lasso it.
Desiree throws a curve at her guys and decides that the cocktail party is cancelled, so it becomes a pool party instead. Tempers flare and there's a confrontation between the men when one overzealous suitor is caught stealing time with the Bachelorette. The two guys leading the charge would like the sneaky bachelor out of the mansion and far away from Desiree.
At the dramatic rose ceremony, Desiree shows up in a glamorous gown she designed herself - a "Bachelorette" first! She struggles with whom to send home, and one unlucky guy is completely devastated when he doesn't receive a rose and breaks down. At the end of the night, 13 men will be left in the race to make Desiree theirs.
The 16 remaining men are:
Ben, 29, an entrepreneur from Dallas, TX
Brad, 27, an accountant from Denver, CO
Brandon, 26, a painting contractor from Costa Mesa, CA
Brian, 29, a financial advisor from Baltimore, MD
Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT

ABC press release:
THE REMAINING BACHELORS START THEIR ROMANTIC GLOBAL TOUR WITH DESIREE IN ATLANTIC CITY, AS THE ICONIC RESORT PLAYS HOST TO A HOT COMPETITION BETWEEN THE HANDSOME MEN AND A TOUCHING SURPRISE FOR A MARRIED COUPLE DRAMATICALLY AFFECTED BY SUPERSTORM SANDY, ON "THE BACHELORETTE"
Country Super Star Darius Rucker Also Plays a Part in the Poignant Surprise for the
Seaside Heights, New Jersey Couple Who Lost All of Their Belongings in the Hurricane
"Episode 904" - Desiree starts her world tour searching for love in the popular, nostalgic seaside resort of Atlantic City, New Jersey, where some of her hunky beaus will compete for the coveted title of "The Bachelorette's Mr. America." And on a more serious note, the Bachelorette and James go on a very different type of date to Seaside Heights, New Jersey, as they view the damage done by Superstorm Sandy and meet a couple who survived the hurricane but lost everything they had, spending their 38th wedding anniversary in a Red Cross shelter. What surprises do Desiree and James have in store for the couple - and for each other? As the waves crash on shore, the tension at the cocktail party builds. Desperate times call for desperate measures and the men try and do whatever they can to ensure they get a rose to travel with Desiree to the next exciting location - Munich -- on "The Bachelorette," MONDAY, JUNE 17 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
As the men settle in their luxury suite at Revel Resort & Casino in Atlantic City, Brad learns he will have the opportunity to pursue Desiree on a one-on-one date that begins with a stroll down the historic boardwalk to the famed Steel Pier amusement park and a scrumptious private tour of a saltwater taffy factory. Then the Bachelorette and this single dad enjoy a glass of wine in a spectacular sandcastle fit for a princess and dine in a historic lighthouse, romantically overlooking the ocean. But will she give this hopeful guy a rose?
The next day Desiree meets 11 of her guys at Boardwalk Hall - the birthplace of the Miss America Competition. There Chris Harrison, who will co-host ABC's live telecast of the 2014 Miss America Competition, on Sunday, September 15 (2013) with "Good Morning America" co-host Lara Spencer, and the reigning Miss America Mallory Hagan, reveal that the men will compete in the first ever "The Bachelorette's Mr. America" title. A day of rehearsing leads to another surprise: they'll be performing in front of a live audience, with Desiree, Miss America and the Mayor of Atlantic City, Lorenzo Tyrone Langford, judging the competition. Wacky talent performances, an exciting display of swimsuits and the all-important interviews lead to one suitor being crowned. But the competition at the after party is also fierce, with Ben continuing to flaunt his time with Desiree in front of the other guys. Who will end up with the rose?
The final one-on-one date takes a 180-degree turn: A representative from the Red Cross takes Desiree and James up in a helicopter to view the damage done to Atlantic City's neighboring communities during Superstorm Sandy, including Seaside Heights, which took the brunt of the powerful hurricane. They meet Manny and Jan, a married couple who lost their home and all of their possessions in the storm. They never even had the opportunity to celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary. Touched by their heart-wrenching story, Desiree and James decide to give the couple their extravagant date - a lavish dinner -- and a special gift from the Red Cross. Meanwhile the Bachelorette couple grabs a slice of pizza and gets to know one another better. James is so moved by the love shared
by Manny and Jan that he decides to reveal a secret from his past. But is this too much information too soon, and will it kill his chances for a rose? Desiree has one more surprise for the couple -- a private concert by country music chart-topper Darius Rucker.
The men's anxiety level is high as the cocktail party begins. Bryden struggles with his feelings for Desiree and Zack K. is desperate to stay on this journey. By the end of the evening, 11 lucky bachelors remain, and it will be up to Desiree to determine if she is in love with any of them when they get to their next spectacular stop on the adventure: Munich.
The 13 remaining men are:
Ben, 29, an entrepreneur from Dallas, TX
Brad, 27, an accountant from Denver, CO
Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Bryden, 26, an Iraq War veteran from Missoula, MT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA
Drew, 27, a digital marketing analyst from Scottsdale, AZ
