PRESS RELEASE - ENTERTAINMENT - ABC announces Desiree Hartsock as the new "Bachelorette"

FAN FAVORITE DESIREE HARTSOCK, WHO ROSE FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT, HARD WORKING GIRL-NEXT-DOOR LOOKING FOR LOVE, STARS ON "THE BACHELORETTE" WHEN IT RETURNS TO ABC ON MONDAY, MAY 20

Will This Cinderella Find Her Prince Charming?

Desiree Hartsock and the Bachelor Nation faithful thought she would happily end up with America's favorite Bachelor, Sean Lowe. Their relationship started off incredibly strong, but somewhere along the way Desiree lost her confidence. After struggling to regain what they once had, Sean and Desiree seemed to be on the right track - until the hometown dates. Millions watched, stunned, as Sean sent Desiree home, and they fell even more in love with her as she struggled to tell him he was making a big mistake. Now it's time for Desiree to call the shots when she gets her second chance to find love, starring in the ninth edition of ABC's hit romance reality series, "The Bachelorette," which will premiere MONDAY, MAY 20 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. The identity of the new Bachelorette was revealed tonight on ABC's live telecast of "The Bachelor: After the Final Rose."

Please note: "The Bachelorette" will move to its regularly scheduled timeslot, Mondays from 8:00-10:01 p.m., ET on May 27.

Desiree, 26, moved numerous times with her family as a youth and eventually settled in Colorado. After her high school graduation, she moved to California where she attended Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FITM) in Los Angeles. Although her family was of modest means, they were rich in love. Their values helped guide Desiree to become an industrious, passionate and creative woman who loves living in California and working hard to make her dreams come true. She is currently an operations manager at a bridal salon and a bridal stylist, but that hasn't stopped her for shooting for the stars. She is confident that in the future she will be a bridal gown designer who owns her own boutique. But more than anything, Desiree's ultimate dream is to find a love like the one her parents share. Married for 35 years, but together for 40, they've always supported and appreciated one another. It's that cherished model of marriage that led Desiree to be on "The Bachelor," where she fell in love with Sean.

This spunky, athletic and artistic woman is eagerly looking for a life filled with spontaneity, love and laughter. She hopes someday to travel the world with that special someone whom she'll run home to see every day. And she is positive, after falling in love on "The Bachelor," that she can find her soul mate on "The Bachelorette."

After struggling to regain the relationship they once had, Sean and Desiree seemed to be on the right track - until the hometown dates. Millions watched, stunned, as Sean sent Desiree home, and they fell even more in love with her as she struggled to tell him he was making a big mistake. Desiree, 27, moved numerous times with her family as a youth and eventually settled in Colorado. Although her family was of modest means, they were rich in love. Their values helped guide Desiree to become an industrious, passionate and creative woman who is working hard to make her dreams come true. She is confident that in the future she will be a bridal gown designer with her own boutique. But Desiree's ultimate dream is to find a love like the one her parents share. And she is positive, after falling in love on "The Bachelor," that she can find her soul mate on "The Bachelorette."

On the premiere, "Episode 901," Desiree begins her Cinderella journey when Chris Harrison welcomes her to her new home, a cliffside Malibu estate, and gives her the keys to a brand new Bentley convertible. Her transformation is complete as she slips into a stunning silvery confection of a gown fit for a princess. At the mansion, Desiree's anxiety falls away as her 25 eager suitors catch their first glimpse of her: One nervous guy tries to sweep her off her feet with a romantic dance move, but falls flat; a sleight-of-hand artist makes something special magically appear for Desiree; a hunky oil rig worker puts his amazing abs on display straight off; still another hopeful Prince Charming goes to the other extreme, showing up in a medieval suit of armor. But the one who steals her heart is the youngest bachelor ever to step out of a limo -- a four-year-old boy who is followed by his proud, single dad.

The 19 roses are brought out early, and with them the battle for Desiree's heart begins. The magician announces he is going to make the Bachelorette disappear, setting off a frenzy of guys stealing Desiree away in hopes of getting a rose. Once the first rose is awarded to one lucky fellow, a battle erupts between the jealous guys who will stop at nothing to get her attention: one man dazzles her with hip hop dance steps; the shirtless abs bachelor strips down completely and jumps in the pool -- but will this outrageous stunt get him a rose or a ticket home? Tensions mount as a dashing Venezuelan former soccer player tries to pull her outside to show her some dribbling moves and the other guys intervene. The fireworks really explode when one overzealous bachelor wants to show Desiree his own private "fantasy suite." Her reaction shocks the house! By the end of one of the most exciting nights of her life, Desiree is hopeful that one of the remaining 19 men will indeed be her Prince Charming.

A list of bachelors will be released shortly.

Desiree's hunt for Mr. Right will take place on some of the most romantic and adventurous dates ever, with exciting surprises in store for both her and the bachelors as they travel the world for intimate dates in Atlantic City, NJ; Germany, Spain, the island of Madeira and other exciting locations.

A jam packed schedule in Los Angeles will have Desiree surprising one lucky man with a day of wedding-themed events. Then, after a VIP view from atop of the Hollywood sign, they enjoy a private performance by R&B pop-rock singer Andy Grammer. Fourteen enthusiastic men join Desiree to make a rap video with superstar Soulja Boy. A dodge ball group date ends up with someone making an emergency room visit, but Desiree treats one man to a private concert by soul/pop/gospel singer Kate Earl. Danger lurks as Desiree and one special guy try to take love to new heights when they join dance troupe "Bandaloop" who perform on the side of a glass skyscraper suspended by cables. Then it's "Hi-Ho, Silver! Away!" as five rugged guys learn how to perform stunts from professionals at a cowboy boot camp and compete for a ticket with Desiree to a VIP screening of Disney's eagerly awaited upcoming release, "The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. It's onward to Atlantic City, but wait until 11 of the men discover they'll compete for the first-ever coveted title of "The Bachelorette's Mr. America." Desiree and one bachelor also visit the area devastated by Hurricane Sandy and meet a couple who were victims of the storm. What Desiree and her date decide to do brings the couple to tears. Country chart-topper Darius Rucker plays a part in the heart-wrenching surprise.

An excited Bachelorette makes her first trip to Europe, taking the remaining men to Germany, exploring beautiful, historic Munich on an individual date -- which culminates with a VIP concert by rock/pop artist Matt White -- then taking a group of the guys up the Alps to the tallest peak in Germany for a day of sledding. Continuing the European tour, the group travel to romantic Barcelona. A world famous soccer stadium is the site for six men to suit up and compete against a professional team - but there's a jaw-dropping twist. The idyllic island of Madeira is the backdrop for a special date in its capital city, Funchal, complete with a stroll through lush tropical gardens, tobogganing down the town's steep winding streets and a performance by a Fado singer. On a one-on-one date, Desiree takes her suitor up a winding road through the clouds to the mountain peak of Pico do Arieiro for a romantic picnic and a fireworks display. Finally, after the crucial hometown dates, three lucky men travel with Desiree to an exotic destination for some of the most intimate and sensual overnight dates ever. The Bachelorette will have traveled the world again for love, but will she finally make her own fairytale come true?

As in the past, men will continue to be eliminated each week, but if at any point along the way a bachelor should decide that he's no longer interested in the Bachelorette, he can reject her invitation to continue dating. Two lucky men will meet her family, and she will visit the final bachelors' hometowns for a slice of their lives in an effort to determine the man with whom she is most compatible -- but there are surprises in store for Emily that will shake her world. At the end of the journey, the Bachelorette may quite possibly have found true love. But the big question is: After all of this, will he pop the question, and will she say yes?

DESIREE BEGINS HER SEARCH FOR THAT ONE SPECIAL MAN WHEN
"THE BACHELORETTE" PREMIERES, MONDAY, MAY 27, ON ABC

Desiree's Suitors Are Revealed...Who is the Man in the Suit of Armor,
The Abs Man and the Youngest Man to Ever Climb Out of a Limo?

What do a Cuban Casanova -- who is a gentle giant but might be too good to be true -- a hard charging federal prosecutor, a sexy former pro soccer player who is a single dad, a free spirited drilling fluid engineer with a captivating sense of humor, a self-proclaimed Southern gentleman who also is a single father, and a suave, debonair financial advisor with a dark secret in his past all have in common? They're all on the hunt for the new Bachelorette, Desiree Hartsock, when the ninth edition of the female version of ABC's popular romance reality series, "The Bachelorette," premieres on MONDAY,
MAY 27 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Desiree, 27, who grew up in a family of modest means but rich in love, meets 25 potential soul mates as she begins her own search for true love. In the premiere, "Episode 901," 25 eligible men come from all over to try and win Desiree's heart. Immediately the drama and one-upsmanship begin. Desiree's anxiety melts away as soon as the men start to compete to impress her: Larry, a nervous ER doctor, tries to break some romantic dance moves, but he's no Fred Astaire; Nick R., who plies his trade as a professional magician, displays his talents to Desiree; a shirtless Zak W., a hunky oil rig worker, displays an outstanding six-pack to impress the Bachelorette; and Diogo appears like a knight in shining armor - literally. But the one who captures Desiree's heart is our youngest man to ever climb out of a limousine -- Ben's four-year-old adorable son, Brody, who accompanies his single dad.

The battle for Desiree's attention and affection has only begun. The 19 roses come out early. Nick R. sets off a commotion as the men rush to get time alone with the Bachelorette. After Desiree gives out the first rose, a jealous frenzy erupts between the guys. Brad, who is a part-time DJ, sparkles with some hip hop dance moves. Fearless, topless Zak W. strips down to his underwear and dives into the pool. But how will Desiree react to this immodest stunt? Strikingly handsome Juan Pablo, a former pro soccer player, attempts to give the Bachelorette a private dribbling lesson. However, before too long, the rest of the men jump into the action. And Jonathan drops a bombshell when he decides the time is right to invite Desiree into his own special "fantasy suite," which leads to an explosive reaction.

Some bachelors with early roses can relax, but the others are very apprehensive as the season's first rose ceremony begins. Finally, Desiree will have the 19 men who will move into the mansion and continue on the quest for her heart.

Desiree's 25 suitors are:

Ben, 28, an entrepreneur from Dallas, TX
Brad, 27, an accountant from Denver, CO
Brandon, 26, a painting contractor from Costa Mesa, CA
Brian, 29, a financial advisor from Baltimore, MD
Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Bryden, 26, an Iraq War veteran from Missoula, MT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA

James, 27, an advertising executive from Chicago, IL
Jonathan, 26, a lawyer from Hickory, NC
Juan Pablo, 31, a former pro soccer player from Miami, FL

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' season premiere

by Chris Harrison

Oh, how good it feels to be back. If we had to pick a theme for the first night we would have to have to steal a page from Jeopardy! and go with the category “Names That Begin With ‘M’ or ‘B’.” The season started off a little differently with Desiree; it’s important to know where she came from so you can fully appreciate and understand where this journey will take her. I enjoyed the more casual style of starting out by sitting down to talk with Des at her house. It definitely put her at ease and made her more emotionally available and open. I could tell she was genuinely excited to be the Bachelorette and truly ready to find love.

The arrivals are always just a bit awkward but it seems even more so when it’s the Bachelorette and it’s a bunch of guys piling out of the limos. Guys are just completely out of their comfort zone. Some of the highlights from my perspective that night were, of course, Zak who arrived shirtless and asked Des if she would accept his abs. Despite later stripping down and diving in the pool, Zak got a rose. (It’s worth noting that Des had a tough time figuring out where to put it.)

Larry went with the dance move. At this point we’ve been on network television for over a decade. One thing that never ever works well is picking up or spinning a woman in a full-length formal gown. It’s always a disaster, yet each season some guy gets out of the limo and tries to make it work… It doesn’t… ever! Despite history being against him, Larry went for it and spun his way right off the show.

Then there was Diogo, the Knight in Shining Armor. This probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but in reality a suit of armor is hot, heavy, and not really easy to move in. Maybe the boldest, riskiest move came from Ben, who arrived with his son, Brody. At first I thought this idea could easily be a disaster, but as you saw, Brody was absolutely adorable and it turned out to be the most impressive romantic arrival of the night. More importantly, it really made an impression on Des and she ended up giving Ben the first rose of the season.

The cocktail party was business as usual; it was a stream of guys vying for attention and time with Des. But then there was Jonathan. Jonathan had already shot himself in the foot during his arrival when he gave Des his own version of a fantasy suite card. Jonathan should have known better. You don’t try to step in and steal my moves, especially on the first night. Instead of making things better once he got time with her, Jonathan decided to push the issue and shoot himself in the other foot by trying to get Des to go to some sort of homemade fantasy suite in the house. Des quickly shot him down and you could tell she was really bothered and more than just a little creeped out by this guy. This should have been the end of it, but Jonathan, who apparently isn’t very good at reading a woman, took one more shot at getting Des alone in a back room in the house. This officially skeeved Des out so much she had had enough and sent Jonathan home right then and there.

We did learn a few things here. First, Des is more than capable of taking care of herself. I loved how she shut the guy down and sent him packing. The other thing we learned is that Jonathan’s mom thinks he’s good looking and he has a full “love tank.” If any of you know exactly what a “love tank” is, feel free to write in and let me know.

By the time the night came to an end, the creeper, the dancer, the magician, and the knight were all sent home. That first night is always just a jumping off point for what’s to come. You got a taste of what Des is in for this season, and let me tell you, in my opinion, this is one of the best seasons we’ve ever had. Des was great about really opening herself up and being vulnerable going through this. That’s really the only way this thing works but unfortunately it also opens you up to the possibility of getting hurt. Next week the dates begin, and so does the drama. These guys start falling for Des quickly and the battle for her time and attention gets intense. I’m incredibly glad to be back on the air with another season and grateful so many of you have come back to take this journey with us.

I promise it’s an amazing ride that we’ll be talking about all summer long. I’ll be back here next week but you can always keep up with me via Twitter and Instagram @chrisbharrison.

ABC press release:

LOVE DEVELOPS ATOP THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN, SOULJA BOY TEAMS WITH
DESIREE AND THE BACHELORS FOR A ROCKIN' RAP MUSIC VIDEO, AND SOME
OF THE MEN DISPLAY THEIR VULNERABILITY IN THE RACE FOR ROSES,
ON ABC'S "THE BACHELORETTE"

R&B Pop-Rock Singer Andy Grammer Performs in a VIP Private Concert

Sparks Fly Between the 19 Remaining Men as They Jockey for Desiree's Time and Attention

"Episode 902" - A bridal shop provides the unlikely backdrop for Desiree's first one-on-one date with the tall, dark and handsome Brooks; rap superstar Soulja Boy carefully crafts an aptly named rap music video - "Right Reasons" - using Desiree and a group of slick bachelors; and Bryden is treated to a scenic, romantic road trip up the beautiful California coast. But some of the men are already fighting for Desiree's love and nearly come to blows. After careful deliberation, three men are sent packing as the Bachelorette attempts to make her fairytale come true, on "The Bachelorette," MONDAY, JUNE 3 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Brooks is ecstatic when he gets the first date of the season, complete with Desiree driving them through the streets of Los Angeles in her baby blue Bentley. Making their first stop at a bridal shop, Desiree tries on lavish wedding gowns while Brooks looks dapper in a number of tuxedos. That is just the beginning of the whimsical date, as the Bachelorette decides that they should remain dressed like the top of a wedding cake throughout the date. After a quick stop at a cupcake truck, it's up to an exclusive seat high atop the world-famous Hollywood sign, which is celebrating its 90th year. For first time ever, a platform is built on the letter "L" for the couple to share their time together there. Over a romantic dinner, Brooks gets emotional as he shares unpleasant details of his parents' divorce. But the evening ends on a hot note when the couple share a first kiss as they slow dance at a private concert by singer-songwriter Andy Grammer. Will passion be enough to get Brooks a rose?

The next day 14 men join Desiree at a swank Malibu mansion to star in a rap music video appropriately titled "Right Reasons" with superstar rapper Soulja Boy. He carefully selects his rapping proteges to each play the part of an infamous man from past seasons. There's Wes from Jillian Harris' season, Justin and Kasey from Ali's season, and one bachelor even reprises Jason Mesnick's legendary tearful collapse. Desiree gets into the act, rapping about her journey to find the perfect man. However at the after party the competition heats up, with Ben interrupting Mikey's alone time with the Bachelorette, sparking the first confrontation of the season. Meanwhile, Brandon opens up about his tragic broken childhood. Will displaying his deep vulnerability earn him the group date rose or will it be a turn-off?

Bryden nets the last individual date this week and a scenic road trip up the California coast that takes them to their final destination, the posh Ojai Valley Inn and Spa. At an intimate dinner, Desiree's date relates a story about an accident that changed his life forever. The evening ends in a steamy hot tub with some passionate kisses, but will Desiree need more than this macho man has to offer?

At a tense, pressure-packed cocktail party, the men battle each other for time with Desiree before she makes her decisions, and two come close to duking it out. Meanwhile, another bachelor tries to reassure Desiree that he's ready to spend the rest of his life with her even though he had some problems with his last relationship.

At the end of the night after a dramatic rose ceremony, 16 men will be left to vie for Desiree's heart.

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 2

by Chris Harrison

I hope all of you are about to read this for the right reasons. I also hope that this week none of you decided to take a shot every time you heard that phrase, because if you did, you are not going to have a good Tuesday or probably Wednesday either.

Before I dive into this hip-hop episode I want to answer a couple questions I got from your comments. Somebody asked how the guys spend their days when they’re not with Des on dates. Well, they do what they want around the house — hang out by the pool, work out, sleep or all of the above. Another question was about whether the guys or the girls are cleaner as a group. This is tough because it really depends on the season, but overall it’s surprising to note that the men are cleaner. Maybe it’s not as much of a surprise because the women pack much more stuff, and don’t get me started on the state of the bathroom when the ladies are in the house. There are times when the guys aren’t much better, but ladies you win this battle — or lose it actually.

The first date this season was a one-on-one with Brooks. This may have been the coolest first date we have ever had on this show. After what could have been an awkward stop at the bridal shop (what first date doesn’t start there?), Brooks and Des got to experience something few people ever will: Sitting on the actual Hollywood sign and enjoying a picnic. We were very thankful to get the opportunity to use that location. I have to give major props to our crew for setting up the bridge experience for them as well. And to top it all off, the talented Andy Grammer was there to put on a private show. As incredible as this date was, I honestly think these two could have gone and done anything and had an amazing time. They hit it off immediately. You can clearly see that Des and Brooks have a serious physical and emotional attraction — the big question now is will Brooks suffer the first date curse?  Having that first date is great but now he has to sit back and watch all the other guys get their turn to date her and come home talking about their connection. He will have to stay strong to avoid falling victim to the curse.

The group date took place in one of my favorite locations here in Los Angeles and it happens to be less than a mile from the Bachelor mansion, Malibu Rocky Oaks Winery. This house, or castle, is one of the most beautiful in all of LA and it provided the perfect backdrop for our hip-hop video “Right Reasons.” (Watch the full video here.) I want to personally thank Soulja Boy for being such an amazing sport. I also want to personally apologize for subjecting him to such pitiful hip-hop skills. Seriously though, he was incredible to work with and hang out with all day. He really seemed to enjoy the idea and dove right in making everybody comfortable. There are few things that stood out to me on this date besides our horrible hip-hop skills. I said last week Zak W. would redeem himself and you can already see why. He’s much more than the dude who showed up with no shirt on. Brandon really opened up to Des in a major way, but it was a lot to take in. Too much, too soon? You also got to see that the loveable dad, Ben, is starting to rub the guys the wrong way.

A quick note on Bryden and his one-on-one date with Des: The date was great and very easy. Des puts everybody at ease. She’s very easy to sit and converse with, and there’s something about her that makes these guys feel comfortable about opening up and getting personal. That’s a great quality in a woman and these guys love it. What really impressed me about Des on this date is how she handled the awkwardness. Bryden obviously wanted to kiss her, but he either was too nervous or he couldn’t read the signs. Either way, Des took the situation into her own hands and said, “Just kiss me already!” I loved how she took what could have been an awkward moment and made it easy and fun. She took all the pressure off the guy and put it on herself — that was a classy move.

As you can see the guys are really starting to fall for Des and the competition has begun. Ben has started getting under people’s skin and he almost seems to relish it, like it’s a game to him. This will continue in the weeks to come. You may have also noticed that I brought a guest into the house. To borrow a phrase from this week, somebody is not here for the right reasons — and boy do we have proof!  It’s not a pretty scene, but it’s one that you must see because I promise you everybody will be talking about it next week. I warn you to buckle up because these first two episodes were child’s play compared to what’s to come. From here on out, it’s a ride unlike any of us have ever been on. The one thing I can promise you is that each and every week, not only am I here for you, but I’m here for the right reasons! Talk to me at @chrisbharrison.

ABC press release:

NEXT WEEK ON ABC'S THE BACHELORETTE (6/10)

IN ONE OF THE MOST EXPLOSIVE SHOWDOWNS IN BACHELORETTE HISTORY,
DESIREE CONFRONTS ONE MAN WHO IS NOT THERE FOR THE "RIGHT REASONS,"
AN AGGRESSIVE DODGEBALL GROUP DATE SENDS SOMEONE TO THE ER,
AND A ONE-ON-ONE DATE GOES FROM BAD TO WORSE, ON "THE BACHELORETTE"

Singer Kate Earl Performs in a VIP Private Concert, and in a "Bachelorette" First,
Desiree Wears a Stunning Gown She Designed Herself to the Rose Ceremony

"Episode 903" - Desiree ups the ante on a winner-takes-all game of dodgeball with a group of the men, but things turn ugly quickly when a massive pileup ends with someone making a trip to the ER. Kate Earl serenades the Bachelorette and one the men with some touching love songs in a special performance. A death-defying individual date with Kasey goes awry, morphing from a fantasy into a nightmare. Roping and riding take center stage as the stunt coordinator for Disney's "The Lone Ranger" shows some of the guys the ins and outs of being a cowboy. However, it is Chris Harrison's surprise call to Desiree that starts a wild chain reaction: It's revealed that one deceptive man not only has ulterior motives for being there, but has a girl friend to boot! Desiree's firestorm of emotion makes her question all the remaining men. Is her Cinderella story about to crash and burn? "The Bachelorette airs MONDAY, JUNE 10 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Desiree pulls out all the stops and brings in the pros from the National Dodgeball League to teach the guys how to take their game to the next level. After a spirited practice session, the blue team of bachelors takes on the red team at the Americana in Los Angeles. The clash of titans ends up in an enormous heap, sending one person to the ER with a broken bone. How will this affect that night's after-party? Chris sweeps Desiree off her feet and sparks begin to fly. The two escape for a private concert under the stars by soul/pop/gospel singer Kate Earl.

Desiree is blown away when Chris Harrison informs her that one of the men is definitely not there for "the right reasons" and that, in fact, he left a girlfriend back at home to participate on the series. A total shocker follows when the guy's girlfriend shows up unannounced. All hell breaks loose and a very visceral confrontation ensues. Can Desiree trust any of the other bachelors? How will she decide who is sincere?

Then it's time for a one-on-one date with Kasey who is determined to show the Bachelorette what love should be about. Their time together begins with the unusual dance troupe, "Bandaloop." These artists dance on the side of skyscrapers using a special trapeze rigging. They teach Desiree and Kasey tricks they'll need in preparation for their guest star appearance. But it is not as easy as it seems and things quickly go south, making it one of the most calamitous dates in "Bachelorette" history.
A sudden windstorm later ruins what is supposed to be a romantic rooftop dinner. Will Kasey recover to get a rose?

Five lucky, rugged guys are schooled in the fine art of cowboy stunts and tricks by the stunt coordinator on Disney's eagerly awaited upcoming release, "The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. They'll be competing for a chance to win a seat next to Desiree in an advanced VIP screening of the movie, in theaters on July 3. One hero-in-training steals Desiree's heart with his fancy roping and stuntman skills. Who will be the Bachelorette's "Lone Ranger?" But a group date rose is still at stake at the after-party, and one of the men will impress Desiree enough to lasso it.

Desiree throws a curve at her guys and decides that the cocktail party is cancelled, so it becomes a pool party instead. Tempers flare and there's a confrontation between the men when one overzealous suitor is caught stealing time with the Bachelorette. The two guys leading the charge would like the sneaky bachelor out of the mansion and far away from Desiree.

At the dramatic rose ceremony, Desiree shows up in a glamorous gown she designed herself - a "Bachelorette" first! She struggles with whom to send home, and one unlucky guy is completely devastated when he doesn't receive a rose and breaks down. At the end of the night, 13 men will be left in the race to make Desiree theirs.

The 16 remaining men are:

Ben, 29, an entrepreneur from Dallas, TX
Brad, 27, an accountant from Denver, CO
Brandon, 26, a painting contractor from Costa Mesa, CA
Brian, 29, a financial advisor from Baltimore, MD
Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Bryden, 26, an Iraq War veteran from Missoula, MT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA
Dan, 30, a beverage sales director from Las Vegas, NV
Drew, 27, a digital marketing analyst from Scottsdale, AZ
James, 27, an advertising executive from Chicago, IL
Juan Pablo, 31, a former pro soccer player from Miami, FL
Kasey, 29, an advertising executive from San Luis Obispo, CA
Michael G., 33, a federal prosecutor from Miami Beach, FL

ABC press release:

THE REMAINING BACHELORS START THEIR ROMANTIC GLOBAL TOUR WITH DESIREE IN ATLANTIC CITY, AS THE ICONIC RESORT PLAYS HOST TO A HOT COMPETITION BETWEEN THE HANDSOME MEN AND A TOUCHING SURPRISE FOR A MARRIED COUPLE DRAMATICALLY AFFECTED BY SUPERSTORM SANDY, ON "THE BACHELORETTE"

Country Super Star Darius Rucker Also Plays a Part in the Poignant Surprise for the
Seaside Heights, New Jersey Couple Who Lost All of Their Belongings in the Hurricane

"Episode 904" - Desiree starts her world tour searching for love in the popular, nostalgic seaside resort of Atlantic City, New Jersey, where some of her hunky beaus will compete for the coveted title of "The Bachelorette's Mr. America." And on a more serious note, the Bachelorette and James go on a very different type of date to Seaside Heights, New Jersey, as they view the damage done by Superstorm Sandy and meet a couple who survived the hurricane but lost everything they had, spending their 38th wedding anniversary in a Red Cross shelter. What surprises do Desiree and James have in store for the couple - and for each other? As the waves crash on shore, the tension at the cocktail party builds. Desperate times call for desperate measures and the men try and do whatever they can to ensure they get a rose to travel with Desiree to the next exciting location - Munich -- on "The Bachelorette," MONDAY, JUNE 17 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

As the men settle in their luxury suite at Revel Resort & Casino in Atlantic City, Brad learns he will have the opportunity to pursue Desiree on a one-on-one date that begins with a stroll down the historic boardwalk to the famed Steel Pier amusement park and a scrumptious private tour of a saltwater taffy factory. Then the Bachelorette and this single dad enjoy a glass of wine in a spectacular sandcastle fit for a princess and dine in a historic lighthouse, romantically overlooking the ocean. But will she give this hopeful guy a rose?

The next day Desiree meets 11 of her guys at Boardwalk Hall - the birthplace of the Miss America Competition. There Chris Harrison, who will co-host ABC's live telecast of the 2014 Miss America Competition, on Sunday, September 15 (2013) with "Good Morning America" co-host Lara Spencer, and the reigning Miss America Mallory Hagan, reveal that the men will compete in the first ever "The Bachelorette's Mr. America" title. A day of rehearsing leads to another surprise: they'll be performing in front of a live audience, with Desiree, Miss America and the Mayor of Atlantic City, Lorenzo Tyrone Langford, judging the competition. Wacky talent performances, an exciting display of swimsuits and the all-important interviews lead to one suitor being crowned. But the competition at the after party is also fierce, with Ben continuing to flaunt his time with Desiree in front of the other guys. Who will end up with the rose?

The final one-on-one date takes a 180-degree turn: A representative from the Red Cross takes Desiree and James up in a helicopter to view the damage done to Atlantic City's neighboring communities during Superstorm Sandy, including Seaside Heights, which took the brunt of the powerful hurricane. They meet Manny and Jan, a married couple who lost their home and all of their possessions in the storm. They never even had the opportunity to celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary. Touched by their heart-wrenching story, Desiree and James decide to give the couple their extravagant date - a lavish dinner -- and a special gift from the Red Cross. Meanwhile the Bachelorette couple grabs a slice of pizza and gets to know one another better. James is so moved by the love shared
by Manny and Jan that he decides to reveal a secret from his past. But is this too much information too soon, and will it kill his chances for a rose? Desiree has one more surprise for the couple -- a private concert by country music chart-topper Darius Rucker.

The men's anxiety level is high as the cocktail party begins. Bryden struggles with his feelings for Desiree and Zack K. is desperate to stay on this journey. By the end of the evening, 11 lucky bachelors remain, and it will be up to Desiree to determine if she is in love with any of them when they get to their next spectacular stop on the adventure: Munich.

The 13 remaining men are:

Ben, 29, an entrepreneur from Dallas, TX
Brad, 27, an accountant from Denver, CO
Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Bryden, 26, an Iraq War veteran from Missoula, MT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA
Drew, 27, a digital marketing analyst from Scottsdale, AZ
James, 27, an advertising executive from Chicago, IL
Juan Pablo, 31, a former pro soccer player from Miami, FL
Kasey, 29, an advertising executive from San Luis Obispo, CA
Michael G., 33, a federal prosecutor from Miami Beach, FL
Mikey T., 30, a plumbing contractor from Winfield, IL
Zack K., 28, a book publisher from Newport Beach, CA

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 3

Lying, cheating, deceitful pig! Anytime that sentence is uttered you know there’s some drama. We will get to the slick used car salesman that is Brian in just a bit, but first let me say I’m glad this season has officially begun. As of this week, the gloves came off and it is on.

The week began with the group dodgeball date. The day started off innocently enough in a small private little gym where the guys got absolutely pummeled with balls from professional dodge ballers. (Who knew there was such a thing?) Let me tell you, I watched the practice portion of this date and those pros could bring it. The guys were so relieved when I came in and told them they’d be battling each other. That is until I happened to mention it would be a very public display. By the time the guys arrived at the open-air mall there was already a huge crowd gathered. I love these public dates where I get to walk around and visit with our fans. Des and I had a great time spending about a half hour walking around the arena talking and taking pictures with everybody before the guys arrived. The guys probably weren’t as excited about the crowd once they saw the very tight uniforms they had to wear.

These guys were so competitive when the games started they would sprint at each other full speed to get the balls. Well, something had to give — and that something was Brooks’ finger. There was no doubt when I saw Brooks’ face that he was really hurt. Any doubts I may have had were erased once I looked at his finger and saw where his knuckle used to be. Des was a champ that day. Brooks’ finger was all kinds of disgusting and she sat there with him and comforted him the entire time. At the end of this epic dodgeball battle, Des ended up taking both teams to the party. I did feel bad for Brooks, not as much about breaking his finger but more so about having to go the emergency room in that outfit. Can you imagine the looks on the faces of the nurses and doctors as this guy comes in with that uniform?

At the after-party, I feel like we finally got to know some of these guys a lot better and so did Des. Brad really opened up to Des about his son and his situation with his ex, which was incredibly heavy stuff. These guys are really starting to feel for Des and that is leading to intense competition, but also moving these guys to really open up. Halfway through the party Brooks came rolling in and I’m assuming he had a pain pill or two. By the look of the smile on his face I’m not sure he even knew what party he was attending. For all he knew, he may have been at the Academy Awards. I have to give him credit for wrapping up the finger and rolling in still in his uniform. The guys were so deflated when he walked in because they knew Des was going to give him major attention. Chris, who we also finally got to know this week, was able to make a big enough impression on Des that he got the group date rose and the private show with Kate Earl. It was brutal that the guys had to sit and listen to the concert knowing that Des and Chris were sharing an intimate moment together.

GET EW ON YOUR TABLET: Subscribe today and get instant access!

The next day I got a call from one of our producers telling me we had a bit of a situation that I needed to be made aware of. I was told the complete story of how Brian not only had a girlfriend but that she wanted to speak to him and confront him at the house. After talking the entire situation over with our producers, we decided the best course of action would be for me to call Des, tell her everything and see how she would react and how she wanted to handle this. I loved her attitude about the whole thing. Instead of being sad, she was resilient and strong. On top of that, she was pissed and wanted him out in a big way. I told her Brian’s girlfriend was in town and she agreed that she should get the chance to speak to Brian herself.

Stephanie and I were waiting together out front while Des talked to Brian. She was incredibly upset and emotional. In fact, she was so upset I wasn’t sure she would be able to walk in the house, much less confront Brian. Somewhere between the front door and the backyard she found the strength because she let him have it and didn’t stop. I mean she really, really didn’t stop, for a very long time. Des and I were standing there looking at each other and couldn’t help but laugh as this guy got everything he deserved. It really wasn’t a funny situation — it was actually very sad as this guy obviously was in no place to be there for Des, and he was obviously messing with this other woman’s life.

Maybe after Stephanie, the biggest victim in all this was poor Kasey. He was set to have his first one-on-one date with Des that day. Even though Des was fine after she sent Brian packing, emotionally, she just wasn’t in the right space to then turn around and try to go on a romantic date. She gave it her best shot, but it was really like the date was jinxed from the start. The weather turned terrible, the pool was freezing, Des was in a rough mood and it just spiraled downhill. They both tried to patch it together but it just wasn’t happening. Kasey took it well and knew this just wasn’t his night. I’m glad Des realized this and still gave him a rose so he can have another chance to show Des what he has to offer.

The final date was another group date that was tied into the new movie The Lone Ranger, which I can’t wait to see. Come on people, we had Silver on the date! I know I’m dating myself, but I think that’s pretty damn cool. If you didn’t yell “Hi-ho Silver, awaaayyy” then you either aren’t a fan or maybe you’re under sixty-five years old. Anyway, I know the only thing people (women) are going to be talking about is Juan Pablo. The guy knows how to lay it on thick and Des loves it. James may have gotten the rose but Juan Pablo stole the show on this date.

Because this week had been a little tense, Des decided instead of a formal cocktail party, let’s let everybody relax and enjoy a day in the pool. It was nice to be able to finally walk in and give some good news for a change. It was a much needed stress reliever, or at least that’s what we thought it would be. Ben pulled a sneaky little stunt, swiping Des before the day ever got started. He actually would’ve gotten away with it if it weren’t for those meddling kids! (It’s a Scooby Doo reference — look it up, kids.) Ben is really rubbing some of these guys the wrong way. Yes, some of it may be jealousy because he’s been one of Des’ favorites from the start, but he’s also done everything in his power to rub it in the guys’ faces and make it worse. Quick side note: The only thing more awkward than all those guys sitting in the hot tub with Des when I walked up was all those guys sitting in the hot tub without Des after she left.

When all the dust had settled this week Dan, whom I had never seen before, and Brandon were sent home. Brandon had an incredibly emotional week and it was just too much for Des, as she just didn’t have any chemistry with the guy. I felt bad for the guy because he just didn’t read the signs and was blindsided when Des sent him home. As I said, this was a very pivotal week for this season as it really was the jumping off point for how this will all play out in the weeks to come. Things took a very serious turn and the drama isn’t over. Next week we leave the friendly confines of the mansion and hit the road. Our first stop is Atlantic City, the new/old home of the Miss America pageant, which I’ll be hosting in September. You will enjoy how we pay homage to this event by putting the guys through the paces of their own pageant. Trust me — it’s a sight to behold. Have a great week and we’ll be waiting for you next Monday night on the Jersey shore. In the meantime you can find me on instagram and twitter @chrisbharrison.

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 4

It’s always great when I get to walk into the mansion and let the guys know that it’s time to pack their bags and hit the road. It’s also fun to see how excited they are when they learn where we’re headed. Our first stop on this trip around the world with Des is Atlantic City, New Jersey. We stayed at the beautiful new Revel hotel.

Brad got the first date this week and it didn’t exactly go well. You could quickly see that he and Des had no connection. Des is big on chemistry, and unfortunately they had none. When you add to all this the fact that he’s a caring dad, Des really felt compelled to let him go as soon as she knew there wasn’t anything serious between them. The only sad part was how many stairs Des made him climb to get to the top of that lighthouse just so she could dump him. In all seriousness, it was obviously the right thing to do, because at this point there are guys here that she does see a possible future with.

The group date this week was near and dear to my heart. The last time I was in Atlantic City was back in 2004 when I hosted the Miss America pageant for the first time. I’m extremely excited the pageant is coming back to where it all began when it airs on Sept. 15 on ABC — and I’ll be hosting again, now for the fifth time. I loved that the reigning Miss America, Mallory Hagen, was able to join us and help out with our first ever The Bachelorette‘s Mr. America pageant. Mallory has been a great ambassador for Miss America and she shared her personality and wicked sense of humor with everybody. I always enjoy when we get to do public dates, but to actually get to host an event like this for a live audience in an Atlantic City showroom was awesome. We had a packed house and the crowd was great.

As for the actual competition, well, let’s just say there are things that will never be erased from my brain. Chris walking out in high heels with hula-hoops around his arms was just one of many bad images. And don’t even get me started on the bathing suit competition. I have to admit I was a little surprised Kasey won the crown. I thought Zak W. might have won with his song; it played well with the crowd and it seemed to impress Des. At the after-party Ben continued to draw Des in while he manages to push the guys further away. Zak W. pulled the guitar out again, which is sometimes a sketchy move, but it worked and he got the rose.

James got the final one-on-one date this week. No, I’m not going to even get into the shots of him eating strawberries while in the bath. Like most of high school, let’s just pretend it didn’t happen and move on. This was easily one of my favorite dates this season. I was so happy that while in New Jersey we were able to shed some light on the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. I’m even more proud of the fact that we promote an organization like the Red Cross that does so much for victims of devastating events like Sandy or the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. I hope all of you will take a minute and go to www.redcross.org/thebachelorette to find out how you can help rebuild the Jersey Shore and Moore, Oklahoma.

It was very cool that not only did we show the destruction, but we also introduced you to an amazing couple, Jan and Manny. Des and James gave them their date and it was beautiful to see how grateful they were for this night. I went over to the Foundation Room at the House of Blues before the date and our art department was so happy to be setting up for a regular couple that would get such a treat out of a fancy night out. There is so much love between these two, and the book of restored pictures from the Red Cross was just priceless. I was also lucky enough to spend some time with the talented Darius Rucker that night. I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know Darius over the last few years and I can tell you as talented as he is, it doesn’t compare to what a generous, great guy he is. Manny and Jan’s date was such an emotional date, you almost forget about Des and James — but they had an interesting night, too. I’m curious to know what all of you thought about James admitting to Des that he cheated on his college girlfriend. Do you think honesty was really the best policy here? I know Des ended up giving him the rose, but do you think she’ll ever forget what he told her? It will be interesting to see how that affects their relationship in the weeks to come.

The cocktail party and rose ceremony were held in suites at the Revel Hotel. The view from the rose ceremony was stunning as you could see the entire Atlantic City boardwalk. Zack K. was sent home this week and you know what that means? There’s only one Zak now, so Zak W. can officially drop the W and just be good ol’ Zak. As you saw, Atlantic City was just a jumping off point as we now head over to Europe and Munich, Germany. We’ve talked for years about going to Germany and I’m glad we finally did. It’s a beautiful and historic city — but it turns out it’s also a very dramatic place to visit, too. Or maybe these guys just made it that way. Ben will continue to stir things up, but James is really the one who will step into the crosshairs next week with some ill-advised words. These guys are really falling for Des and are very protective of her, and this is going to lead to some explosive confrontations. We’ll see you next week in Munich, and in the meantime you can always reach me via Twitter and Instagram @chrisbharrison.

ABC press release:

DESIREE VISITS EUROPE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THE COMPETITION IS RACHETED
UP BETWEEN THE MEN AS THEY DISCOVER ANOTHER RASCAL IN THEIR MIDST,
ON ABC'S "THE BACHELORETTE"

Pop Rock Singing Star Matt White Serenades Desiree and Chris in a Special VIP Concert

Michael and Ben's Dreaded Two-on-One Date Guarantees at Least One Man a Ticket Home

"Episode 905" - Desiree has never traveled to Europe before, and the 11 remaining men hope to make this first leg of the international tour to find love a special one, starting in Munich. Chris gets to explore this culturally rich city with Desiree, but their romantic date comes to a crashing halt when another man interrupts them with shocking news. The Bachelorette takes seven guys to the German Alps, where not only do they enjoy their majestic beauty, but yodel, sled and frolic like kids in the snow. The competition between James and front-runner Brooks turns ugly, while other bachelors make their play for Desiree. The awkward, dreaded two-on-one date has arch-enemies Michael and Ben facing off. Whose strategy works and which man stays? But two men are overheard scheming about what they will do after this journey, and the other guys are anxious to make Desiree see one of them for who he really is, on "The Bachelorette," MONDAY, JUNE 24 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Desiree and Chris tour the heart of the old city, sightseeing, sampling sausages and beer and even trying on lederhosen. The two swap relationship stories, and Chris ends by reading a romantic poem he penned just for her. Touched by his sincerity, she kisses him. Is this the start of something special? Rock and pop star Matt White serenades the couple with his hit song, "Love and Affection." Love is in the air, but do both of these people feel the same way?

The next day, Desiree takes seven men on a group date to the German Alps. They ride in a gondola to the highest peak in all of Germany. They're taught how to yodel, with the Bachelorette enjoying their antics. The group has a blast as they sled down a black diamond ski slope. What awaits them is a spectacular igloo hotel totally carved out of snow and ice. As Zak and Drew profess their love for Desiree, James and Brooks go all out in a ferocious battle.

A dramatic two-on-one date pits two bitter rivals against each other - Michael and Ben. Can they get past mutual dislike and concentrate on Desiree? One man goes on the attack and attempts to get his adversary to admit to being a fake. The other man decides just to take it on the chin and refrains from using the same kind of verbal shots. As the volatile date progresses, the aggressive bachelor goes in for the kill, and his opponent abruptly storms out, leaving Desiree disappointed with the remaining man. Will his nasty approach pay off with a rose, or will it backfire and send him home? And what about his rival?

Drew and Kasey share a shocking revelation with the group about what they heard two of the bachelors say about the wild time they expect to have after they appear on "The Bachelorette." But their plans to tell Desiree the ugly truth fall through when she cancels the cocktail party, and now everyone scrambles about what to do next. Will the playboy get a rose - and if he does, when will Desiree discover the truth about him? Either way, only eight men will remain to travel to the magnificent city of Barcelona.

The 11 remaining men are:

Ben, 29, an entrepreneur from Dallas, TX
Zak W., 31, a drilling fluid engineer from Mico, TX

ABC press release:

DESIREE'S EUROPEAN TRIP IS CLOUDED WITH MYSTERY AND MISTRUST
AS THE MEN CLASH IN THEIR ATTEMPT TO REVEAL JAMES' SECRET
AND NO ONE IS SAFE, ON ABC'S "THE BACHELORETTE"

"Episode 906" - Desiree flies her eight remaining men to the cultural and romantic hotspot of Barcelona. Drew and Kasey, however, share the burden of a terrible secret concerning James, who they feel is not there for the "right reasons." The guys are intent on making sure that Desiree learns the devastating truth about this man, but when will it be the right time to tell her? Meanwhile, Drew has his own romantic and emotional one-on-one date with the Bachelorette. The group date features a face-off between six pumped up bachelors and an all-female professional soccer team. But buckle up - the after party features one the most visceral, ferocious fights in "Bachelorette" history. And when Desiree finally confronts James, she drops a bombshell. Zak helps to take Desiree's mind off the drama with a revealing one-one-one date that ups the romance. But the tension is unbearable as the rose ceremony nears and no man feels safe. Who will survive to travel to the exotic island of Madeira? "The Bachelorette" airs MONDAY, JULY 1 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Drew's one-on-one date offers the opportunity for one of the more reserved men left to let loose and open up to Desiree. They explore Barcelona, walking the ancient streets of the city and taking in its world renowned architecture. When the two stop for local tapas, this shy bachelor gets emotional, opening up about his personal hero -- his recovering alcoholic father, who had turned his life around only to now face cancer. At their private dinner in a magical courtyard, Drew proves he has a spontaneous side after all. Passionate kisses in a secluded alley show Drew's other side, but then, when the night couldn't get any more romantic, he stuns Desiree by telling her that James - a man she has feelings for - is not what he seems.

Desiree invites six of the men to the beautiful RCD Espanyol futbol stadium to practice Europe's number one sport, soccer. Little do they know that they'll suit up and compete against some of Spain's top futbol players - a very intimidating all-female team. James feels the chill from the rest of the men, but not just for his performance. The after party features a nasty face-off between the men, as some decide to confront James about what they believe are his plans to hurt Desiree in the end. Trapped in lies, the situation explodes with a heart-pounding, finger pointing and screaming stand-off. Once the Bachelorette is told about James' nefarious intentions, confirming what Drew told her, she takes drastic steps to confront the wayward bachelor. What Desiree decides will shock everyone.

The last one-on-one date with Zak helps Desiree to forget her problems as they arrive at an exclusive art studio for private lessons. They sketch live models in classic Spanish clothing - one model minus clothing - and there is a surprise guest model. That night, after leading Zak to a romantic, candle-lit table deep inside a cava cave, Desiree discovers another deepening connection with a bachelor who freely admits that he is completely smitten with her.

No cocktail party is planned, but the men are very anxious. Desiree drops by and the men are both surprised and shaken by her actions. The only question is -- which five bachelors will remain to travel to the tropical destination of Madeira, Portugal, as the hometown dates are fast approaching?

The eight remaining men are:

Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA
Drew, 27, a digital marketing analyst from Scottsdale, AZ
James, 27, an advertising executive from Chicago, IL
Juan Pablo, 31, a former pro soccer player from Miami, FL
Kasey, 29, an advertising executive from San Luis Obispo, CA
Michael G., 33, a federal prosecutor from Miami Beach, FL
Zak W., 31, a drilling fluid engineer from Mico, TX

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 5

I want to start off this week sharing some great news that many of you have hopefully already heard about. Mike Fleiss, the creator of this franchise, and myself, have helped create a dating site called At First Sight. The app is currently available on iPhone and Android devices and will be available online very soon. For over a decade, people have come up to me and asked how they could be on the show or if I could help them find love. Well, this site, which has been many years in the making, takes what we’ve learned from years of doing this show and put it into an amazingly useful, entertaining and safe site. Download At First Sight and check out the video profiles, then take a minute and make your own. I’d love to know what you think.

Now, let’s jump into this week’s episode with Des and the boys in Munich, Germany. I need to start off by apologizing to a fellow host and the German people. For several days everywhere I went people were raising a glass and saying “Probst.” I like Jeff Probst, he’s a great guy and I respect his skills and his many Emmys, but hearing everybody toast that guy when I walked in the room was more than I could take. I learned later the German word for “cheers” is “prost” and in no way relates to Jeff Probst. I only wish I had learned this before verbally assaulting many good German people. With that little misunderstanding settled, it was time to move the guys into their hotel. As you can tell it was a little chilly this week in Munich, but the city is absolutely beautiful. I’d love to tell you what hotel we stayed in because it was incredible, but as you heard I couldn’t even pronounce it, much less spell it. If you couldn’t tell my German is, as they say, “no bueno.”

Chris got the first one-on-one date this week. This is a guy who has really emerged from the pack the last few weeks. He was a slow starter but has really made up ground and seems to be making an impact on Des. The date was going great until Bryden decided that not only did he need to leave, but he really needed to leave right then and there. So he set off to find Des to break the news to her immediately. I don’t necessarily think he needed to bust into her date to do this, but I do respect the fact that Bryden pulled himself out of this situation as soon as he was absolutely sure Des wasn’t right for him. At this point, taking up space in the house and on dates just isn’t fair to Des or the other guys. While Des wasn’t exactly blown away by this news she was upset by the realization that this can happen. Chris was put in a tough spot, having to help Des recover and also save his date. He did a great job pulling the situation together, assuring Des he was there for the long haul. Later that night when Des was explaining that she really needs words of affirmation in a relationship, Chris whips out a poem he wrote. This was perfect timing and Des really took it to heart. It was the icing on the cake for what had been a really good date.

The group date took Des and the guys to the highest peak in all of Germany. The last couple weeks I think you’ve really been able to see a difference in Des and her relationships with the guys. They all had a blast playing on the mountain and then headed inside an ice castle that you could only find on this show. Des and Brooks are an interesting pair right now. You can tell she’s really into him and he seems to be into her but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of dialogue between them at this point. It’ll be interesting as thing progress to see if there is more than just pure chemistry between them. I hate to harp on this, but how far has Zak come since the first night? He might be one of the best comeback stories we’ve ever had. That was an incredible story he shared about climbing the mountains in Germany ten years ago to find clarity about the priesthood. Apparently, God talked to Zak and said his services weren’t needed in the church and to go forth and do some crunches.

Now, the situation with James is a very interesting one. He obviously said some things in front of Kasey and Drew that didn’t sit well with them. But was this just guy talk? Were these things said around his boys that he didn’t really think much of or was these statements a true picture of his character? This is a very explosive situation and the fuse is lit. James is a very proud passionate guy and he’s not going down without a fight, literally. Next week should be pretty intense.

The two-on-one date is always an awkward one, but awkward really doesn’t describe what went down between Michael and Ben. I would love to get your thoughts on Ben. Michael did an incredible job of using his courtroom skills to bury Ben, but did he go too far? Was this one of those situations where he won the battle but may have lost the war? Des got the message and kicked Ben off, but she was clearly upset and put off by Michael’s tactics. How about Ben’s thoughts in the car home? Wow! Did he show his true colors or what? The things he said about being the next Bachelor and what a great story a single dad from Texas would be was nauseating. I’m guessing Des was pretty happy about her decision after seeing that.

We shot the deliberation and rose ceremony at Schloss Schleissheim, which in German means “holy crap that’s an incredibly awesome castle.” This castle was about thirty minutes outside of Munich and it was well worth the trip. After speaking with Des, I could tell she was very clear in what she wanted to do this week and she really didn’t need or want the cocktail party. I think part of the reason is she knew she was saying goodbye to a nice guy like Mikey. Spending more time with him only would have made things more difficult. Mikey is a sweet guy and Des really liked him, but there just wasn’t chemistry there.

Next week it’s off to Barcelona. This is obviously one of the most romantic places in the world but next week it will also be one of the most dramatic as the situation with James goes through the roof. The guys this season have really fallen for Des and they are incredibly protective of her, but are they too protective? At some point Des might get to the point where she resents being “taken care of” so much. Thank you for watching and as always you can find me on twitter and instagram @chrisbharrison.

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 6

This week we landed in easily one of the greatest and most romantic cities in the world, Barcelona. The guys and Des actually stayed in a quaint little seaside town a short drive from Barcelona called Sitges. When I walked up to find the guys at the beginning of the episode, we were actually on the boardwalk in Sitges. Usually when we go to great cities like this I will spend some time telling you why it’s such an amazing location, but I think Barcelona speaks for itself, and it does so with an incredible Spanish accent. If you get the chance you must spend some time in this city.

Drew got the first one-on-one date this week and he and Des made the short drive to spend the day getting lost in Barcelona. We’ve seen a little bit of Drew but we’ve never seen him like we did on this date. Drew opened up to Des and revealed a lot about his personal life, especially the struggles with his dad. These conversations can sometimes get awkward but Des and Drew really seemed to get each other on a very deep, personal level. The date had a heavy start but it really took off from there. At dinner, Drew really seemed to step out of his comfort zone when he attempted to steal Des away to a private place so he could deliver what Des described as a very passionate kiss. It’s a little hard to steal Des away when we have all our cameras there working, but the sentiment is what’s important. Drew obviously got the rose and is definitely someone to be watched as we continue.

The group date this week, on a personal level, was one of the coolest dates we’ve ever had. If you don’t know, I love soccer as much, if not more than Juan Pablo does. While I was in town I was fortunate enough to take in some Barcelona games, so it was incredible that we got to take over their cross-town rivals’ stadium for our date. The Espanyol stadium and field was in perfect condition and I want to thank them for being so gracious in allowing us to take a few divots out of that pristine pitch. One of the most entertaining parts of the date was a former pro and now professional trainer named Carlos who put the guys through some drills before the game against the girls. As you saw at the end of the episode, he was awesome and had a great sense of humor. Juan Pablo was easily the best player for the guys, but Chris was the surprise star.

Of course the real drama on this date took place off the pitch when the guys finally confronted James about the things he said. Kasey did most the talking as he had actually heard James talking to Mikey in the van. But then James tried to “counter-accusate” these serious allegations. Yes, Kasey completely made up a word here, but I have to be honest I not only knew what he was talking about, I like it and plan to start using “counter-accusate” as well. James later sat and talked to Des and was very emotional and contrite, which is completely different than how he is with the guys. So the big question is, “Who do you guys believe?” I do have to credit James for one thing: I absolutely loved his entrance back at the suite. He calmly strolled in and instead of the confrontation we were expecting he simply said, “Gentlemen, goodnight,” and walks off to bed.

I know Zak was worried his date might be marred a bit with all the James stuff from the night before, but he didn’t need to worry. His sunny disposition and charm quickly helped Des forget all about the James garbage and she was able to dive right in to the nude sketching. There are plenty of jokes that pop into my head about the nude sketching and although I find it hard to let them go, I will not indulge such adolescent punch lines. Instead I will rise to the occasion and show my great love for the arts. In all seriousness the date with Zak was a huge success. Their relationship seems very fun and easy. Des and Zak appear to be on the same page they make each other laugh and seem happy together.

The situation with James was far from over, though, and Des had to come back to finish the conversation she had postponed the night before. The only problem is when James talks to Des he seems sincere and sweet. It’s when he’s with the guys that he gets defensive and confrontational. It really is a bizarre situation and I look forward to sitting down with James and the guys to discuss this at the Men Tell All. Like you, I’m a little torn on this situation and I think it’s safe to say that Des is as well. Even though she let James go, I really don’t think she had clarity on him or how she felt about all of it.

Lost in all the James drama will be the fact that Juan Pablo and Kasey also went home this week. As you could see from the previews, the rest of this season is incredibly emotional, and it’s not going to be easy for Des. Next week we’ll be in Madeira, Portugal. Until then you can always find me via twitter and instagram @chrisbharrison.

ABC press release:

DESIREE TAKES THE FINAL FIVE MEN ON A SPECTACULAR TRIP TO MADEIRA ISLAND, PORTUGAL, AS THE CRUCIAL HOMETOWN DATES LOOM, ON ABC'S "THE BACHELORETTE"

Catherine, Lesley and Jackie from Sean's Season Visit Desiree to Offer Their Advice

"Episode 907" - The drama of Munich and Barcelona is behind Desiree, but she still must determine which four men will have the chance to take her home to meet their families. Madeira, off the coast of Africa, is the perfect location for her to meet up with three of her friends from last season -- Catherine, Lesley and Jackie - for some girl time to refocus on the crucial task at hand. Brooks and Desiree enjoy a one-on-one date, but a serious conversation gives her some indication of where their relationship is headed. Desiree takes Chris to a deserted island for an idyllic day, but he is very nervous about whether to reveal his real feelings for her. An over-the-moon Michael gets his first one-on-one date with the Bachelorette, exploring the city of Funchal. Zak and Drew's two-on-one date, where the one who gets the rose is assured a hometown date, turns into a real contest between the best in both men. But Desiree makes a confession to Chris Harrison that will turn everything upside down, on "The Bachelorette," MONDAY, JULY 8 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Brooks gets his second individual date with Desiree and they drive to the top of a mountain, passing through the clouds. The couple share a romantic picnic and, later that night, in an attempt to figure out where their relationship stands, they play a game of metaphors to describe their feelings. What does Desiree learn from this revealing word play?

It's off to a deserted island for Chris and Desiree, leaving the other four men green with envy. Once they arrive, Chris suggests a very romantic gesture: the two of them will write a poem, put it in a bottle and send it off into the ocean. An extremely nervous Chris decides that he needs to tell Desiree how he feels about her that night, but how did she respond to his overtures?

Michael is finally going to get his opportunity to spend the day alone with Desiree. The excited bachelor and the object of his affection explore the streets of Funchal, the island's main city. He opens up that evening at dinner, sharing a deeply personal story about how his father left his family when he was very young, and another about a very gut-wrenching break-up he had with his last girlfriend. How has his personal history affected his relationship with Desiree? A traditional Fado singer caps off the day serenading the couple.

Finally Zak and Drew go on a very different two-on-one date, spending the day at a Go Kart track. One man will get a rose and be assured of a hometown date; the other will need to wait to learn his fate at the rose ceremony. The men compete to see which of them gets to spend time alone with Desiree first. They both put their best foot forward in ways that touch her and move her to reward one of them with a rose.

Before the rose ceremony, Desiree is filled with emotion. What she reveals to Chris Harrison about her feelings for two men makes her believe she is on the right track to find love. She makes a very difficult decision to send one bachelor home, who declared that he was ready to commit to her forever. The four very happy remaining men will return to the States and introduce Desiree to their families.

The five remaining men are:

Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA
Drew, 27, a digital marketing analyst from Scottsdale, AZ
Michael G., 33, a federal prosecutor from Miami Beach, FL
Zak W., 31, a drilling fluid engineer from Mico, TX

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 7

This week we found our way back to the country of Portugal. The last time we came to Portugal was with Ali and we stayed in the city of Lisbon on the mainland. This visit took us well off the coast, to the small island of Madeira. It’s actually a lot closer to Morocco in Africa than it is to Portugal. Madeira is a small island known for its gardens and amazing hikes.

The week began with Des getting to visit with some friends from last season: Jackie, Lesley, and Catherine. Catherine had a smile on her face, but believe me she was exhausted. Due to some travel complications, she barely made it into town at the last moment and her luggage never actually made it at all. Then she had to hop on a flight the very next day to get back to the States for an event with Sean. Even through that, she was thrilled to get to catch up with her old friends and dish about the five remaining guys. Des also enjoyed the visit with the girls and it put her in a great place going into her dates.

Brooks got the first one-on-one this week. I find these two very interesting. They seem happy together, but they also seem very cautious. It’s almost as if they spend time trying to figure out how to define their relationship or figure out how the other person is feeling. For example, they came up with “adjectives” to describe where they are between like and love. Now the fact that they actually came up with verbs, and not adjectives, is something I know mortified every English teacher in the world, but that’s not the point. The point is while their outward appearance is happy and free, their words still seem cautious. Des later admitted to me that she isn’t “running” toward love, she’s actually at the “finish line.” She’s in love with Brooks and she feels he’s in love with her as well, although he hasn’t expressed that to her verbally.

Chris got the second one-on-one this week and as good as Brooks’ date was, Chris’ was just as emotional, if not more. When these two are together they just seem right. It’s unbelievably easy and nothing seems forced between them. Chris really seems to make Des happy and he became the first this season to tell Des he loves her. He did it in a poem, but it still very much counts and Des knows exactly how he feels about her. Later, during our deliberation, Des admitted she’s also fallen for Chris and that she could easily see a future with him. I’m glad she’s kept an open mind and is still able to separate each man and each date at this point.

Michael was definitely put behind the eight ball this week. After two incredible dates with Brooks and Chris, the guy just didn’t stand a chance. Maybe if he’d gone first things might have been different, but after being with two men she definitely sees a future, with her feelings and relationship with Michael just didn’t measure up. You could really see it in Des’ body language and hear it in her voice. Michael opened up all he could and he can leave knowing he really gave it his all. He really expressed his emotions to Des, but it just didn’t click for her. Des narrowed it down to five great guys, but when you look at her other four relationships they are just much further along and much deeper than her relationship with Michael. Looking back, I’m not totally sure that the two-on-one where he went after Ben didn’t doom their relationship. After that date you got the sense that Des wasn’t feeling it.

The final two-on-one date was really a foregone conclusion. Unless one of these guys went completely nuts on her she likely knew that both of them would be getting a rose this week. The only true decision would be who would get the rose on the date and who would have to wait for the rose ceremony. Zak brings out a very happy and playful side in Des. When she’s around him she always has a smile on her face. Drew also makes Des happy, but it seems to be in a deeper emotional way. When I see them together they look like a couple that’s been together for years. They seem to get each other on a very deep level. Drew went a little further than Zak and professed his love to her and he ended up getting the rose, but again, at this point, she already knew Zak would get one as well.

The deliberation and rose ceremony this week took place in the courtyard of our hotel. The deliberation was down on a patio right off the ocean. Des was more open and honest in this deliberation than she’s been all season. She admitted she’s already in love with Brooks and Chris and that Drew and Zak were close behind. Heading into hometowns she’s definitely in a good place but also realizes she has her hands full, as time is running out. This next week with be incredibly pivotal because at this point, Des really needs to see that these men want to be there for her for the long haul and that they are just as committed to these relationships as she is. Hometowns are always my favorite because you can’t fake family. It always provides for an interesting and entertaining episode. I’ll see you next week back in the States as we narrow it down to the final three men! In the meantime you can always find me via twitter and facebook @chrisbharrison.

ABC press release:

DESIREE RETURNS TO THE U.S. TO JOIN THE FOUR REMAINING MEN
IN THEIR HOMETOWNS, BUT SHE IS FALLING LOVE WITH MORE
THAN ONE MAN, ON ABC'S "THE BACHELORETTE"

Desiree Gets a Surprise Visit from Her Disapproving Brother, Nate,
Who Wants to Meet the Final Men

"Episode 908" - Desiree's emotionally charged, whirlwind world tour to find love comes back to the U.S. as she travels across country to visit Brooks, Chris, Drew and Zak in their hometowns and to meet their families. Her spirit and resilience has surprised the men, but she is about to be severely tested by their loved ones as she tries to figure out if she can love more than one man at a time. Are all of these bachelors ready to be married? Desiree will try and find out from the people who know them best, as she moves closer to making her fairytale come true, on "The Bachelorette," MONDAY,
JULY 15 (8:00-10:01p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Desiree starts her visits in Dallas, the hometown of fun-loving, free-spirited Zak, whose zest for life is contagious. The spontaneous bachelor surprises her with an unexpected adventure: They drive a family-owned snow cone truck to an elementary school, where a group of children, hungry for a frosty treat, crowd them. Desiree admires Zak's easy charm as he entertains the kids dressed in a furry Penguin suit. That evening the Bachelorette is delighted to find that her suitor's family is just as fun and outgoing as he is. Zak's brother and sister happily sing their version of a song that Zak wrote for Desiree, bringing her to tears. Then to top it off, the smitten bachelor tells her how he really feels and presents her with a romantic surprise gift that leaves her speechless.

Next the Bachelorette heads to Scottsdale, Arizona, to meet Drew, whose sweet and earnest attitude has captured her heart. He prepares her for an emotional and very moving experience as he introduces Des to his severely mentally challenged sister. His selfless devotion to his older sister deepens Desiree's feelings for Drew. The bachelor's infatuation with Desiree is quite clear to his very happy mother, but what does his father think of welcoming the Bachelorette into the family? Drew make a bold and passionate decision to confess his feelings for Desiree and hopes this will further his chances in taking the next big step.

For her date with Chris, the confident and handsome former professional baseball player, Desiree journeys to McMinnville, Oregon. Their easy chemistry makes for a fun afternoon playing baseball on the field where Chris learned the national past time. The real test will be getting the approval of his overly protective mother. Will she give Desiree the thumbs up?

The final hometown visit is to Salt Lake City, Utah, where the ruggedly handsome Brooks awaits Desiree. Although the Bachelorette is already in love with this man, he is not quite certain of his feelings for her. Brooks' incredibly large family - 10 siblings and their spouses - give him a serious grilling in private, but his mother's opinion is the one he values most.  What will she say?

All four men and their families have touched Desiree's heart. Headed back to Los Angeles for the rose ceremony, she is faced with the difficult task of letting one of her amazing men go. As she prepares for her gut-wrenching decision, Desiree gets a visit from her judgmental brother, Nate.

He'd like to know when he's going to get to meet her final men. Of course Desiree remembers Sean's hometown visit to her family last season and the effect it had on Sean and his decision. Now, after talking to Nate, she wonders if she'll let Nate meet her final suitors.

At the rose ceremony, Desiree loses her composure as she says a tearful goodbye to one stunned and devastated bachelor. The Bachelorette and her final three men prepare to leave to their last exotic destination, the tropical paradise of Antigua.

The four remaining men are:
Brooks, 28, a marketing consultant from Salt Lake City, UT
Chris, 27, a mortgage broker from Seattle, WA
Drew, 27, a digital marketing analyst from Scottsdale, AZ
Zak W., 31, a drilling fluid engineer from Mico, TX

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 8

Welcome to the hometown dates for Des and the boys. This was a very interesting and pivotal episode in many ways, and with all that was going on there were some things you may not even understand until you see the dramatic two-episode finale of this season. Des was looking forward to these hometown dates and was really hoping she would get answers from these guys and their families as to who is really ready to settle down and begin a new life together with her.

Des started in Dallas with Zak and his family. It was very cute watching Zak and Des serve the kids snow cones, but Zak needs to understand rule number one when wearing a penguin suit: You never break character! As you could clearly see, Zak has a very normal, loving family and they are very protective of him. They could clearly see Zak was in deep and had fallen head over heels in love with Des. This is always one of my favorite episodes, but one of the aspects I love watching the most are the intimate one-on-one talks the Bachelors or Bachelorettes have with their parents. Zak’s talk with his Mom was so telling of the guy he is and where he came from. We’ve seen Zak sing some songs this season, but this week we got to learn that the apple didn’t fall far from the guitar in this family. Zak’s siblings did their best Partridge Family impersonation and serenaded Des. To say she looked slightly uncomfortable would be a gross understatement, but the truth is she found it very endearing. The sister was actually pretty good but the brother was like a little pitchy dog. On an incredibly serious note, Zak very strongly professed his love and devotion to Des and there’s no question he was ready to propose to her and his family would be just fine with that.

Drew was up next in what may be the most emotional; touching hometowns we’ve ever shown. Drew is clearly in love with Des and he finally said that to Des this week. It was this love and trust that allowed Drew to feel comfortable enough to introduce Des to his mentally handicapped sister, Melissa. Des handled this touching moment with class and grace and it was a positive experience for everybody involved. Des seemed very relaxed and comfortable with all of the families. It felt like she was really in her element at these homes, sitting down with the people that could possibly become her future in-laws. Like Zak’s talk with his mom, Drew’s talk with his dad was incredible to watch. They can see that Des has captured Drew’s heart and it was special to hear his dad encourage Drew to go for it and bring Des into their family.

Last week Des admitted she has fallen in love with both Brooks and Chris, and their two hometowns were last. The moment Des sees Chris you can just see her relax and start smiling. I think I speak for everybody when I say we were all very happy to see Chris didn’t open his date with a poem. Instead, Chris ripped a page from Roberto’s hometown with Ali and took Des to the baseball field where he learned to play. When Des went to his house she quickly learned that all important things seem to take place with this family on a chiropractic table. Des got a quick adjustment before talking a little love with Chris’s dad, but that was nothing compared to Chris’ procedure. While talking to his dad about the future of his life Chris got a little nose adjustment. Whatever they did seemed to work because his nose looked straight and in the middle of his face where I guess it should be. It also seemed to have the desired emotional effect because Chris’ dad gave his son his blessing to propose to Des if he so wishes. Chris reconfirmed his love for Des and with that she entered Brooks’ hometown a perfect three for three in the love department.

Brooks is the only one up to this point who hasn’t professed his love verbally to Des. And while this hometown date was pretty good, Brooks still isn’t ready to take that leap and use the “L” word. One thing I noticed on Brooks’ hometown date is the different dynamic. On the other hometowns Des knew the guys love her and she’s really just meeting these families and trying to see if she could see a life with them. While Des was doing some of that with Brooks it really seemed like he was the one using the time to see if he was ready to take the big leap with Des. He really seems to be leaning on his family members looking for answers. It seemed by the end he got those answers. Like the other families, Brooks’ family loved Des and could very much see her apart of their son’s life.

Once the hometowns were over it was back to Los Angeles for the rose ceremony — but first the long awaited meeting with Des’ brother, Nate. It was interesting to hear the two pretty much haven’t talked and haven’t seen each other since the confrontation with Sean. The body language between Des and her brother was a little awkward and contentious. In the end Des explained she didn’t want Nate to interfere this time and he seemed to give his blessing to Des.

At the rose ceremony Des said goodbye to Zak. At this point I knew it was going to be tough because even if it’s the right thing to do it’s still not easy to say goodbye to anyone. Des was really impressed with Zak and knows he’s a great catch, but he’s just not for her. You just can’t compare the feelings she has at this point for Drew, Brooks, and Chris to those she feels for Zak. It was tough to watch Zak in the limo as you could clearly see he was blindsided by this breakup and was very much in love with Des.

Next week, as you saw in the previews, is the Men Tell All reunion show. We have much to discuss with all the guys, including what’s about to happen in the special two-episode finale! I’ll see you next week from the hot seat, until then I’ll see you on Twitter and Facebook @chrisbharrison.
