Season by season, here is a list of the number of teams each season who finished 1st in at least one leg of the race:

1 - 5 out of 11 teams
2 - 7 out of 11 teams
3 - 5 out of 12 teams
4 - 9 out of 12 teams
5 - 4 out of 11 teams
6 - 5 out of 11 teams
7 - 6 out of 11 teams
8 - 5 out of 10 teams
9 - 4 out of 11 teams
10 - 6 out of 12 teams
11 - 6 out of 11 teams
12 - 5 out of 11 teams
13 - 3 out of 11 teams
14 - 6 out of 11 teams
15 - 4 out of 12 teams
16 - 6 out of 11 teams
17 - 5 out of 11 teams
18 - 6 out of 11 teams
19 - 4 out of 11 teams
20 - 3 out of 11 teams

So generally its a random pattern, but some of the earlier seasons have a high number of teams coming in first place at least once, while the later seasons generally fewer teams coming first.

The general decline correlates to the decline of the Fast Forward.

Yeah, that's what I liked about the early seasons- the unpredictably. The teams who came in first in the first few legs did not necessarily make it all the way.

The first 4 seasons were no more predictable than the later seasons since the Fast Forward was available for every leg except for the final leg.  Note that season 4, the last season to have the Fast Forward available for every leg other than the final leg, had the most teams finishing first.  That season, 4 teams (Steve & Dave, Steve & Josh, Tian & Jaree, Millie & Chuck) won only a single leg and that was because they took the Fast Forward.  All of those teams won their only leg within the first 5 legs of the race.

IKR!  :'(

It looks like Israel 3 is the only Season to have 8 Teams win in an 11 Team Race.  That's the most in any Season.  TAR 4 has 9 different team wins, but I don't really count it due to half of them winning due to the FF, so it's not a legit win, and that strange 3-Way 1st on Leg 1.  Maybe I'm just nit-picking though.

Jeff & Jackie won an EP and most likely use it in leg 6, Laura & Tyler ousted in this leg after no win at all thus the number of team won in that season is only 7

for Asia 2 Allan Wu said all teams that this season had 13 legs, not 12 legs and Diane & Ann won legs 5 thus number of team finished in 1st place in this season would be 4 (not 3), this also occured in CR2
