AMERICA's GOT TALENT 7
« on: April 15, 2012, 03:00:12 PM »
This year's edition of AGT will premiere May 14 on Mondays & Tuesdays 8pm EDT with new judge Howard Stern! Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne are returning as judge and Nick Cannon is returning as emcee. After the preliminary rounds across America, show live performances will be from Newark NJ's New Jersey Performing Arts Center, a very lovely and modern site.

Zouly,

I don't know either, but I have watched every AGT episode for the prior 6 seasons. I think it is a bit of a circus in preliminary rounds, but once the judges (and probably producers) make the cut to about 24 acts, then the really good performances start to emerge.

From a strategic perspective, each act has to withhold enough new material to make it through at least one preliminary round, maybe one round and maybe not in the "cut" round, and then about 4 more rounds. That's a lot of new material to keep it interesting for the judges and audience. This is a major reason why singers have won 5 out of 6 AGTs.

I wish singers would only be on the show if they wouldn't do well on other singing shows. Such as last year's winner. He wouldn't win AI.

Coolio,

You are absolutely right, but you may not appreciate the reason. American Idol's age limit is 15 to28 years old. In 2011 Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. was 36.

I actually think Howard Stern has been a very compassionate judge in what I have seen in the telecasts shown in the first 2 weeks. I hope to see more stern Howard soon.

Howard Stern continues to be an enigma. He likes about half the acts that perform and is pretty gentle with the other half.

A trend this season is for more "join in on the fun", which has frequently in the past meant Nick Cannon but this season means some Howie Mandel and even some Howard Stern on rare occasions. Almost always, this is with performers who have already been eliminated. There is no re-judging on these.

One trend is that the variety of acts has widened. There are only a few singer/guitarists or singer/keyboard player acts, which is a very good thing.

So far, I predict that if the Britain's Got Talent opera singer Jonathan were competing in AGT7, he would coast to easy victory.

There are a lot of marginal acts going to Las Vegas. I find no purpose to this. It makes those acts feel good that they got the invite and one night in Las Vegas, but most of them are going nowhere but home immediately.

I cannot cite frontrunners. However, I do have my 3 favorite performances:

William Close - giant harp is the best single act I have seen
Ulysses - a singer who does corny 1970s songs expertly
Distinguished Men of Brass - a conducted brass band in tuxedos; their moves are limited but their music is fine

Agreed with the Earth Harp...it was so amazing.

I am also stunned by Tom Cotter (the really funny comedian) and Elato Dogs.

and now after I have watched ep. 8, there are 3 more great performers:
1. Aurora light performers
2. The mind reader
3. The Criss Angel look-alike opera singer. Looks can really deceiving...

Of course "Freemantle...would not say how far Poe had progressed in the competition." is irrelevant because the live AGT rounds do not start until the Las Vegas round is used to take the unbelievably low degree of rejecting marginal acts in the preliminaries so many can go to Las Vegas into balance. I hope Poe gets eliminated before getting to the Hollywood rounds because he is a sleazeball. However, he does have the voice that enchanted the judges so he may get to Hollywood. However, when the public gets to vote if they know his real story they will shun him big-time.

One act that the audience and judges liked was the human cannonball. He was shot at the precise angle at 50 mph to land into a net about 100 yards away. Somebody has to be sure the calibration on that is exact, but it looked like he has technicians to make sure of that. I think this is a one-trick pony, as how to you do anything but basically repeat the first instance, but it was entertaining one time.

The first Las Vegas night started with 48 slots open for the next round. The judges have to eliminate all the fluff they should have never put there in the first place.

Bandbaz Brothers (acrobats), Charlie C (soul singer) and Ivy Rose (girl band) were eliminated WITHOUT performing.

William Close (dude who creates his own instruments), Olate Dog (doggie act)s and David “The Bullet” Smith (shoots self out of cannon) are going STRAIGHT to the live Newark NJ shows.

Danger Acts performed – All Wheel Sports with acrobats (is it too much?), American BMX Stunt Team (a biker totally wipes out), New Guard America (A rifle team), Cristin Sandu (17 year old daredevil), Ben Blaque (Cross bow act-shoots a balloon above his assistants head with his back turned).

Female singers were next – Mary Joyner – It’s obvious that being the child of two Olympic athletes does not make one singer. She was unable to hit any high notes. Howard says she blew it. Roxy Doll, Brianna Price, Cecelia Detwiler. The judges didn’t like any of them (so how did they reach Las Vegas in the first place). Luna is next. She’s so nervous, she stops singing. She completely FUBARS her audition, so badly, the judges send her straight home from the stage. Nikki Jensen is next. She’s the first one not to completely screw up.

Dance Groups performed next – Funk Beyond Control, All That (male cloggers), Loyalty (judges didn’t like them), 787 Crew, (They make a mistake).

Novelty – Horse (Kick in the nuts guy. Can you imagine the audience voting for this act to win the finals? I can’t.), All Beef Patty (Drag queen), Joe Castillo (Sand Art, which for the second time I thought was exquisite), Todd Oliver and Irving (Ventriloquist; very funny), Light Wire Theater, Aurora Light Painters (Were intimidated after seeing Light Wire).

Classical Singers – Simply Sergio (Having voice problems, and forgets his words. He wasn’t a good singer to begin with), Luiz Meneghin (slightly better, but not a really good singer) Andrew De Leon (Male Soprano. He totally blows a big note, then stops singing due to nerves.)

There were no eliminations last night. Those will come tonight and the home audience will see how many of the set-aside acts will get the chance to perform. Given the problems we saw last night, I predict that all of the set-asides will get that chance.

Just finished watching the AGT Vegas 1 of 3.

So sad that Bandbaz Brothers and Ivy Rose have to be eliminated. There are more worse acts than them in my opinion but who am I to judge? hehehe.

As for Olate, Earth Harp Guy & Cannonball guy, I'm glad they get the free pass. I really hope they don't disappoint in Top 48 like last year's Squonk Opera who got free-pass but failed miserably.

For this episode, I think Nikki Jensen, Ben Blaque, All That, Aurora Light Painters, Joe Castillo could easily advance. The judges would consider Andrew De Leon giving that he's in the same situation as Poppycock in which he blew his Vegas round but still gets through.

Let's just see what the second day offers us......

Still waiting for: Mind-reader guy, the cute girl and her father who sang 'Home' in audition, the colour painter guy, and Tom Cotter.....hope they all survived....

One more thing, I really2 hope that Horse is cut.....I can't imagine Vote For The Worst have a chance to screw this show if he gets through.....

Today, the standys audition for the judges

Magicians – Eric Dittleman (Mentalist. Freaks Sharon out by “reading her mind”. Howard thought he lacked showmanship, but liked his tricks), Taylor Reed, Justin Rivera (fun with U-Haul  boxes), Spencer Horseman (Jaws of death escape artist. Tonight he does a Houdini-like trick with handcuffs and water.)

Vocal Groups – Eric and Olivia (Guitar, vocal Jazz Duo. Howard loves them) Maurice and Shanice Hayes (Father/Daughter act. They made a tiny mistake. They like the girl, want to ditch the elderly dad) Jorge and Alexa Navaro (Precocious Father/Daughter duo. Sing “Be My Baby”.)

Comedians – Jacob Williams (droll comedian, Howard thought his material could have been stronger. Howie liked him) Dave Burleigh, Kellen Erskine (Sharon thinks he should quicken his delivery), Tom Cotter (Very professional delivery), Frank Roche (Impressionist switches gears to jokes, but bombs BADLY. He’s sent home immediately)

Kids – Sebastien - 10  (Mariachi singer. Sharon calls him magic), Isaac Brown 6 – (Tiny Michael Jackson impersonator, The Untouchables (Kid dance troupe), Amazing Elizabeth 6 (Silk Acrobatic) Edon – 14 (Singer,  piano player, Yarmulke wearer, sings “Without You”.

Male Singers – Ulysses (Joke contestant sings TV theme songs. I can’t believe he made it to Vegas.) Jake Wesley Rogers (Piano guy. Howard doesn’t think he’s ready) Tim Poe (SERIAL LIAR),  Tim Hockenberry (Recovering addict. Piano guy, Joe Cockerish singer.

The judges decided on which performances warrant an invite to Newark New Jersey, where the live performances start next week.  Jorge & Alexa were eliminated, along with all the comics except Jacob Williams and Tom Cotter. Issac Brown and Amazing Elizabeth were eliminated, but the young Latin ballroom group, Sebastien with his huge voice, and Edon are through. The one good female vocalist, I believe it was Nikki Jensen, from Monday night made it, and a lot of male vocalists were eliminated. 787 Crew and the All That! cloggers are going to New Jersey. Of the male vocalists, the young guy, Ulysses  and the Joe Cocker guy are going through. All Beef Patty, and the light acts are going to New York, along with the sand art guy. Oh my god so many acts. The bayonet group was eliminated, but the BMX groups and the crossbow guy are through. Nut Hit Guy and the dog ventriloquist are through because the latter is hilarious. All classical singers were sent home.

Tonight is the standby performances.

Just to add up Apskip's list:

Eric Dittleman the Mentalist and Spencer Horsman also made it through...

The latin ballroom group --> The Untouchables......they are trained by the couple who trained Miami All Stars, a finalist in last season.

Horse made it through...... :groan:

150 contestants will perform for 20 remaining spots in New Jersey.
Magic is up first:
Hawley Magic, who does a double levitation. Howard wasn't impressed. Giani is a mentalist.  He wrote down his "predictions" of what the three judges would say, but wrote "Bilan" instead of "Milan" for Sharon's place. "There's no place called Bilan," Sharon tells him. Touche.

Jarrett & Raja consider themselves the next Siegfried & Roy. They do large-scale illusions, and for their Vegas performance, they bring out an entire orchestra from a tiny red box. Very effective and the other magicians were intimidated.

The next category is Bands. Boy rockers, The All Ways tell us they "go crazy" when they perform, but this is not credible.  Wordspit, the Illest! take a play on "New York, New York". The Hillbenders were cute. Dillon Havins and Friends was annoying but fresh.
The Emily Anne Band was quite talented. The Distinguished Men of Brass were again a real treat.
The danger standbys category is next. LionDanceMe is up first, and nobody jumped on anyone's head or fell. Cliff's Demo Team beat the crap out of Cliff, which I won't deny enjoying, and Kota Sports almost made razor scooters cool. Then there's this guy with the cobra who puts scorpions in his mouth. Serengeti Steve had cockroaches in his mouth, just for effect, then he took the snake out of the basket and threw it around.
Lil Starr, made up a whole new tap dance. Danielle Stallings is quite good. The Cos Fam danced, and that act can only last so long before it's creepy. Tevin McGuire was good, as was Danielle Stallings.

Unity in Motion was quite exciting to watch, with their acro dancing, despite a couple mistakes. The Williams Bruthuz have stepped up their game a bit, but is it a million dollar act. They admitted that not everything went as well as they'd hoped.

There is an entire category for Aerial Acts. Summer Lacy is up first, and she switched to aerial hoop, after doing well on aerial chains in her audition. She's quite likeable, so I want her to do well. That girl is STRONG. I mean, damn, the things she can do! The other aerialists give her props, because hanging by just your neck is difficult to do.

The Benn Mendoza Circus has a lot going on.  Less dancing and more aerial stuff would have improved this act. Donovan & Rebecca are the ones to beat in this category. This time they're doing an aerial rope act, and it's got a lot of danger, plus it's thrilling to watch. He spun her around on the rope; she held on with one hand. Very dangerous!

There's also an entire rap category. I can already tell you that my least favorite act in this category is the cocky The Rhymatist. For his audition, he was dressed like he was applying for a job at Target. Burton Crane is in this group, for some reason, but so is Granny G, so they can be together in their insult to the art form. Rob Hayes was understandably not excited to see them in his category.
The Rhymatist was boring, Svet played the fiddle/violin as well but Burton couldn't understand him. Granny G had a special surprise for the judges that did not go over well. She ripped her dress off to reveal a burlesque outfit. On an 80 year old woman that was not a good move. Whatcha gonna do, Burton Crane? He’s going to use the identical music but in a different key.
Battle Born, a breakdance group from Vegas performs first, followed by Old Shoes, New Shoes. Old tappers got it goin' on. The Lisa Clark Dancers were just strange. The Scott Brothers were the better, more entertaining, grown-up version of the Williams Bruthuz.

Inspire the Fire is a dance group, and also a show choir. They're dressed for The Sing-Off. A guy missed his flight, a girl twisted her ankle, and another girl threw up, but here they are. They're not the best dancers or singers, but they do both so that's something. Howie loves them, of course. He can bring them back for the Wild Card show.

Finally, the novelty category! No one has any idea what anyone else in this category is doing. I really enjoy Dave Girabaldi and His CMYK dance-painters. They created an Elvis portrait, and it was awesome.
John Pizzi, virtual ventriloquist, was far less funny this time around. Michael Nejad plays unexpected objects, like a shovel! Very different.

Rock Star Juggler Mike Price, was as exciting as juggling can get, but The Two Bits did too. Big Barry's thing is that he's short, he wears a white suit, and he is a bad singer. If he gets through you have to wonder which judges have NO ability to spot talent of lack thereof.

Dancers Turf and Stepz make it clear how badly they each want that next round.  Linsey Norton has a very similar routine to the last one. Turf notes that Stepz is using too many props and not dancing enough, but once Stepz started really dancing, it's pretty neat. Turf’s bone-breaking style is remarkable.

It's time for the judges to decide. Many children are eliminated, but not Lil Starr, Danielle Stallings, or Unity in Motion. Lindsey Norton and Elusive are moving on, along with Dave Girabaldi and His CMYKs, and Michael Nejad. Two more magic acts move forward.
Many of my favorite bands were eliminated, but The All Thats, Wordspit, the Illest!, and the Distinguished Men of Brass will move forward. Inspire the Fire is moving on, but the ventriloquist and the Two Bits are eliminated. Cobra-kisser, the karate kids, and the razor scooter guys are eliminated, but LionDanceMe is in. LCD - Lisa Clark Dancers, and the Scott Brothers are going to New York. The old people rappers are not. Thank god.

The other three rappers, Summer Lacy (what?), and The Benn Mendoza Circus are ending their journey here. I'm so glad that Donovan & Rebecca are going to New York, though. They deserve it, out of anyone left in this standby group. Big Barry is moving forward because the judges cannot discern talent and Big Barry’s lack of it.
Only Stepz and Turf remain, and it will almost certainly be Turf, the star of this entire two hours. Stepz is eliminated, and Turf is moving on as our hero. Because he wants it so much! We have to like someone who wants this so much that it completely crumbles them.

Monday 7/2

Sorry, I have been out of commission for the past week. The first quarterfinal had 12 teams competing for 4 slots. The #1, #2 and #3 slots would go to the 3 top acts.

Here were my ratings:
Edon (teen male singer/keyboardist)  B I did not see or hear anything special.
Todd Oliver & Irving, male ventriloquist with 2 dogs B+
787 Crew, dance crew         B
America BMX Design Stunt Team  A
The Scott Brothers              A-
David Garibaldi and CMYKs  A-
Distinguished Men of Brass  B  This act was very disappointing. They deserved to lose.
Jarrett & Raja, magicians     B
Nikki Jensen, singer            B
Shanise and Maurice Hayes, father/daughter act A-
Michael Nejad, novelty musician B-
Lil Starr                             C who let this act into the competitions (answer - Howie, Sharon and Howard)

The categorization generally followed my ratings up until the last group.
In the first grouping, Michael Nejad and and Nikki Jensen lost by audience vote and Sharise and Maurice Hayes moved ahead to the semifinals.
In the second group Lil Starr and 787 Crew lost and Scott Brothers are in the semifinals.
In the third group Jarrett & Raja and and BMX Stunt Design Teams are out and David Garibaldi and the CMYKs are in.
The Distinguished Men of Brass were quickly sent packing. That left the 4th spot between Edon and the ventriloquist. I though the latter and his dogs were much better, but the judges get the deciding vote on #4 vs. #5 and they were unanimous for Edon.

Quarterfinal 2/4

This week's live episode had great highs and lows. It was distinguished by constant bickering between Howard Stern and Howie Mandel. I am in Howard's corner on this. Crappy acts should not be tolerated for any reason and if Howie cannot tell the difference then shame on him.

I am going to organize this to feature the best acts according to my evaluation system:

Tom Cotter, comedian
Donovan & Rebecca, aerialists
Ben Blaque, crossbow

The #4 and #5 acts who will be decided on by the judges are:
Turf, contortionist dancer
Danielle Stallings, vocalist

The undistinguished rest of this group were:
Hawley Magic, magicins
Aurora Light Painters, using light pens
Lisa Clark Dancers, dance
Tim Hockenerry, country music
The AllWays band, Joe Cocker spinoff
Lion Dance Me, lion dance troups

One final space at the bottom is reserved for a terrible singer, Big Barry

Here are the results of the second quarterfinal:

Turf and Tim Hockenberry were in the same grouping, but both got in.
Tom Cotter was in the top 3 and will be joining them.
Ben Blaue the crossbow artist was eliminated.
Danielle Stallings and Donovan and Rebecca were #4 and #5. The judges' nod went to Donovan and Rebecca, which I though was warranted.

Will this season of AGT use the same rules as last season which the acts that lost Judge's Choice automatically get invited back to the Wildcard show?? I somehow want to see Ben and Danielle again...

As for the remaining acts, still waiting for:

Olate Dogs, Earth Harp, The Untouchables, Unity in Motion (Howard keeps mentioning them), Joe Castillo, Lindsey Norton, Jacob Williams, Eric Dittleman and to some extent, Horse (just to see him suffer).

Please come sooner o next week's episode..

Last night was the 3rd of 4 quarterfinals. The acts were a bit strange in my opinion. My ratings of them were:
All Beef Patty, drag queen                             B-   (please!)
All Wheel Sports, stunt BMX team                   A
Elusive, break dancer                                    B
Spencer Horsman, escape artist                     B+
Inspire the Fire, singing and dancing group     C    (right in there with Big Barry)
Mike Price, rock star juggler                           B
Jake Wesley Rogers, singer                           B+
Cristin Sandu, balancing act                           B-    (it wasn’t his night; he needed to go for the short money)
The Untouchables, dance crew                        B
Jacob Williams, comedian                              A-
Wordspit and the Illest, band                         B     (this was pretty weird)
Lightwire Theater, novelty                               A
So, the talent was focused in Lightwire Theater, All Wheel Sports and Jocob Williams as the clear winners. The next echelon of talent was Spenser Horsman and Jake Wesly Rogers. I think Jake will prevail if that is the case.

It was an incredible evening, as somehow the laws of probability were defied with the greater concentration of real talent ever in an AGT quarterfinal. Here are my ratings:

David Smith                    A
William Close                  A+
Unity in Motion                A
Eric Dittleman                  A
Unity in Motion                A

I gave B+ to Joe Castillo, Lindsey Norton and Olate Dogs.

Lesser acts were:
Eric & Olivia
Horse
Sebastien el Charro de Oro
Ulysses at the bottom of the heap.

So that means that all of my A ratings should make itt in, but none of anything else.

Here are the winners of 16 quarterfinal spots before the YouTube and bring-back-the-almost-teams are added into the mix:
1st Quarterfinal
Sharise and Maurice Hayes
Scott Brothers
David Garibaldi and the CMYKs are in.
Edon

2nd Quarterfinal
Turf
Tim Hockenberry
Tom Cotter
Donovan and Rebecca

3rd Quarterfinal
Jacob Williams
Lightwire Theater
Untouchables
All Wheel Sports

4th Quarterfinal
Olate Dogs
William Close
Joe Castillo
Eric Dittelman

At this point I see the competition between Tom Cotter and William Close, recognizing that new acts are about to enter the fray.

I have just finished watching the 4th line-up....so disappointed that only 4 could advance. So glad that all my picks go out as I predicted (Bye Horse!!!)

So here's my take for the partial line-up of the wildcard show before Youtube round:

(The fifth place in each round)
Todd Oliver
Danielle Stallings
Wordspit and the Illest
All that!
<act from Youtube round>

My sure prediction:
Lindsey Norton (Week 4)
Unity in Motion (Week 4)
Ben Blaque (Week 2)

My 50-50 prediction:
Summer Lacy (Eliminated in Las Vegas)
Sebastien (week 4)
David Smith (Week 4)
1 act from youtube

Let's see if my prediction is true....in 3 weeks....

I just rewatched this episode, and in my opinion America got it wrong except for Tom Cotter, though it was nice to see Turf get it.  At least the judges saved Donavan and Rebecca to make up for part of it.  I really thought Hawley Magic should have been in there.  I was also kind of torn between Lion Dance Me and Aurora Light Dancers, both of whom I thought were better than Hockenberry.

I am ready to share more of what I think no specific teams in the AGT7 semifinals:

Sharise and Maurice Hayes - ho hum
Scott Brothers - smooth, but so what
David Garibaldi and the CMYKs are in- truly innovative
Edon  - ugh!

Turf- I don't like him; double-jointed moves just don't do it for me
Tim Hockenberry- what is he doing in the semifinals; just another singer like many from past AGTs
Tom Cotter - YES!
Donovan and Rebecca - one of the most exciting strength acts around

Jacob Williams - OK but so what
Lightwire Theater - electric, likely to go far
Untouchables - in over their heads
All Wheel Sports- exciting but so what

Olate Dogs - excellent
William Close - the ultimate in innovation
Joe Castillo - not bad, but  not good enough either
Eric Dittelman - how does he do it?

Tonight was the YouTube talent episode and there wasn't much evident. The comparison between the average talent per act on the regular route to the semifinals and the YouTube shortcut made the shortcut look insignificant in comparison.

Tonight I had these acts I rated as A-:

Bria Kelly, country singer (can you imagine me finding a country singer at the top of the talent heap?; the sky is falling)
Academy of Villains, dance troupe with an edge

The two acts I rated B+ were:

Clint Carvalho and his Extreme Parrots
Romeo Dance Cheetah, air guitar (I liked it despite the low opinions it got from the judges)

Here are the acts I rated as B:

Reverse Order
Rudy Coby
Drew French singer/guitar
Eric Buss, visual comedian
The Magic of Puck, magician
Cast In Bronze, carillon player

There were 2 acts that were particularly uninteresting and rated B-:
7 In Unison, dance troupe
Melinda Hill, comedienne

My prediction is that all 4 of my top 4 acts above will get through. Pitted in #5 will be some act like Drew French who should not go further.

In the #4 vs. #5 voting by the judges, Clint Carvalho and his Extreme Parrots topped Drew French for the 4th spot advancing to the semifinals.

One of the advantages of living in New Jersey is that one can get tickets for performances at the New jersey Performing Arts Center, where a variety of such performances happen. The rub is getting tickets. I sent in for one AGT ticket a long time ago and the first one they offered me was this coming Tuesday. It will be an exciting time to be there.

It's the Wild Card round where 12 acts previously eliminated get a second chance. NBC is holding a vote for who should be on that show. I don't know how far back that was going on, but I do know that it is now moot. The judges have spoken. These are their selections:

Ben Blaque    Stern  Crossbow Performer

Todd Oliver    Stern Ventriloquist/Dog Act

Horse                Stern Nutshot Taker

Spencer HorsmanStern Escape Illusionist

All That!             Osbourne Cloggers

Lindsey Norton    Osbourne Dancer

The Bandbaz Brothers Osbourne Acrobatics

Jake Wesley Rogers Osbourne Singer/Pianist

Jarrett & Raja     Mandel Comedic Illusionists

Sebastian "El Charro de Oro"Mandel Singer and Mariachi Band

Cristin Sandu    Mandel Balancing Act

Andrew De Leon    Mandel Opera Singer

What was Howie Mandel thinking when he brought back 4 inferior acts? Sharon Osbourne did an outstanding job with her picks. Howard Stern got it right except for Horse, who is the wrong role model.

Horse                Stern Nutshot Taker   B

Spencer HorsmanStern Escape Illusionist  B+

All That!             Osbourne Cloggers   B+

Lindsey Norton    Osbourne Dancer   A

The Bandbaz Brothers Osbourne Acrobatics  B+

Jake Wesley Rogers Osbourne Singer/Pianist  B+

Jarrett & Raja     Mandel Comedic Illusionists   A

Sebastian "El Charro de Oro"Mandel Singer and Mariachi Band  B

Cristin Sandu    Mandel Balancing Act  B+

Andrew De Leon    Mandel Opera Singer  A

Results Show

The first group was:
Ben Blaque
Sebastian
Bandaz Brothers

Sebastian took the first semifinal spot.

Horse
Jake Wesley Rogers
Andrew de Leon

Andrew took the second semifinal spot.

Todd Oliver
Cristin Sandu
Spencer Horsman

Todd Oliver took the third semifinal spot.

Jarrett & Raja
Lindsey Norton
All That!

The usual elimination format for the final spot prevailed. Jarrett and Raja were eliminated despite Howard's expressed disappointment for the voters who eliminated them. The judges then had to choose between Lindsey Norton and All That! The final semifinal spot went to All That.

redwings8831,

I totally agree that America's voters had some really bad judgment. To put Sebastian in over Ben Blacque was ridiculous. Andrew prevailing was reasonable, as was Todd. All That was rated by America's voters close enough to Lindsey Norton that it gave the judges the chance to get it wrong.

To me next Tuesday is the semifinal packed with great talent for the first 3 slots to the finals. That includes:

Todd Oliver
Tom Cotter
William Close
Bria Kelly

There is not even room for Donovan and Rebecca in the top 4.  I see Turf as meeting his Waterloo despite strong support from the male judges. William vs. Bria should go by judge's decision to William.

The following week the talent pool is considerably diminished for the second 3 to the finals.  The top acts are:

Lightwire Theater
Olate Dogs

That's all of the top talent. Since somebody will have to win what I expect to be the other 1 slot available, that gives some unworthy acts like Tim Hockenberry the opportunity to make it through. He is the most popular of the other acts.

It's showtime, when the best acts distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. Only 3 acts will make it through to the finale, which is truly a pity since this half of the semifinals is packed with talent.

The very best act I saw last night was Tom Cotter, comedian, for an A+ rating.

Second best was Todd Oliver, comedian, for an A rating.

The next two was William Close, earth harp, for an A rating.

These acts merited an A- rating:
Eric Dittelman
Academy of Villains
Donovan & Rebecca

B+ ratings go to:
Scott Brothers
Turf
Bria Kelly
Andrew de Leon
Joe Castillo

All alone in the B rating is Edon (who never should have been in the semifinals to start with).

Here is how the results show went:

Groups of 3 acts were cut down into 4 acts moving to further announcements. Those 4 well-chosen acts are:

William Close
Tom Cotter
Todd Irving
Joe Castillo

Then, announcements were made individually on who got the first two slots in the finale in 2 weeks:

William Close
Tom Cotter

Then the judges got to make the final decision. They chose by a 2-1 vote (Howard dissenting) Joe Castillo and Todd Oliver was eliminated.

I am on record that the 2 best acts I expect at next Tuesday's semifinal performances show are Lightwire Theater and Olate Dogs. I expect the third slot to go to David Garibaldi and his CMYKs. I cannot even guess who they will be paired with in the judges' decision between the #3 and #4 acts (by the home audience vote), but they should win that easily.

Normally the results show is on the following day, but there is the opening of the NFL season on Wednesday Sept. 5 in that time slot so AGT7 moves to Thursday Sept. 6 to go against the Democratic National Convention's early hours.

It's crunch time. Unfortunately, my VCR taped the wrong channel last night, so I have had ot rely on NBC performance clips until the Full Episode is up sometime today. Here is my analysis of the 12 performances:

David Garibaldi and his CMYK's - a very first-class act    A+
Lightwire Theater - not as good as prior performance, but good enough to get the nod   A
Olate Dogs - total entertainment    A
David Hockenberry - I have to admit that I don't like his style of music    B+
All That - they rose to the occasional with a high-energy performance    B+
All Wheel Sports - it was good despite a major obvious fall on a trick    B+
Clint Carvalho and his Parrots - this was a totally new show, very entertaining   A
Jacob Williams - lame material; he's definitely gone    B-
Shaunice and Maurice Hayes - too much average singing, not enough of the dancing they are particularly good at    B
Sebastien - he had major trouble staying on pitch throughout his song; his voice is too immature for prime time    B
Magic of Puck - a very routine magic act, but why couldn't he have gone for something more interesting?    B
Untouchables - a high-energy performance above what I expected from them   B+

The top acts (as also underscored by NBC's placement of them on the www.nbc.com/agt website) are David Garibaldi and Olate Dogs.  For the third spot, it is a battle between Lightwire Theater, Clint Carvalho and David Hockenberry. I think the novelty of Clint's parrot will prevail.

The format of naming the 4 top acts but not revealing their precise status is being copied from the first semifinal. The first group results were:
Shaunice and Maurice
All That
Lightwire Theater - making it to the consideration among the top 4 acts

The second group results were:
Jacob Williams
David Garibaldi and the CMYKs - making it to the consideration among the top 4 acts
Sebastien

The third group results were:
Olate Dogs - making it to the consideration among the top 4 acts
Clint Carvalho
All wheel Sports

The fourth group results were:
Tim Hockenberry
Magic of Puck
The Untouchables

At this point I said to myself that my picks for top acts made it to 3 of the top 4 spots. For the 4th, will the #3 act beat the Untouchables? My answer is yes.

The top two acts were:
The Untouchables
Olate Dogs

The #3 and #4 acts were Lightwire Theater and David Garibaldi and the CMYKs.

The judges chose David Garibaldi by a 2-1 vote and Lightwire Theater went home.

The acts in the finale next Wednesday are:

William Close
Tom Cotter
Joe Castillo
The Untouchables
Olate Dogs
David Garibaldi and his CMYKs

I think the winner will be either William Close (based on the novelty of his act) or Tom Cotter (the best comic ever on AGT).

Tonight was 6 performances, all top-level. My ratings for them was:

Tom Cotter - the comedian wows the audience and gets an A+

Multiple acts got an A:
Olate Dogs
William Close
David Garibaldi and his CMYKs

Some acts merited only an A-:
the Untouchables
Joe Castillo

So I think Tom Cotter will win. It will take NBC 2 hours to spin out that very simple announcement.

I saw the finale on a trip I have recently returned from. The finish order was:

6. The Untouchables (America got this right)
5. Joe Castillo (America got this right; sand painting is creative but one hour of it would be boring)
4. David Garibaldi and his CMYKs (America got this right)
3. William Close (His creativity brought him a long way but #3 was a fair judgment on his act)
2. Tom Cotter - I did not agree on this one; I thought his act was the best
1. Olate Dogs - they were super but I thought they should have been #2

So we only have 7 months to wait for a new cycle of AGT8 telecasts and preliminary auditions have probably already started.
