TAR was first in viewers and tied Once Upon a Time in the demo (yay!).  Good to see the show actually go up in the demo even with viewers a little down and Daylight Savings.

One way to see how TAR is doing is that it is still making the top 20, and not lower than the top 30 even in the spring, most of the time.

Does anyone know why CBS is able to claim that TAR was "first in adults 18-49" with a 2.9, despite the fact that "The Walking Dead" had a 3.6 in Adults 18-49?

Do cable shows not count?

The broadcast networks only discuss how they're doing in comparison to other broadcast networks because ad buyers look at broadcast networks and local stations that way.

Cable has a different financial structure, and they are driven by the number of subscribers that could watch a given cable channel (not all cable subscribers have access to all cable channels that are available, either because they did not order that tier of channels or because the cable/satellite provider doesn't carry a particular channel. The ratings then are in terms of how many watched out of how many who has access and could have watched. It's a much more complicated set of numbers, and for some channels, having one million viewers with their channel fees and advertising generates a good profit for the cable provider and the cable channel providing that program.

This is how Daniel Feinberg at Hitfix described the preliminary overnight ratings with the 43 minute NCAA overrun pushing the CBS schedule back (CBS average just under 10 million for that 7pm ET hour):

Quote
8 p.m. -  CBS stayed in first overall with the 10.58 million viewers for "The Amazing Race" (and a big chunk of "60 Minutes" for much of the country), but slipped to second with a 2.6 rating among adults 18-49. ABC's "Once Upon a Time" slipped to 8.585, but actually ticked up from last week in the key demo with a 2.9 rating. NBC's "Harry's Law" averaged 7.62 million viewers for third, but finished fourth with a 1.1 key demo rating. FOX was fourth overall and third in the key demo with "The Simpsons" (5.235 million and a 2.4 key demo rating) and "Bob's Burgers" (4.39 million and a 2.1 key demo).

9 p.m. - "The Good Wife" (and "The Amazing Race" for much of the country) averaged 9.2 million viewers to win the 9 p.m. hour, coming in third with a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49. ABC's "Desperate Housewives" averaged 8.99 million viewers for second and tied for first on the hour with a 2.5 key demo rating. NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice" averaged 5.21 million viewers and a 1.6 key demo rating. FOX was tied for first in the demo and finished fourth overall with "Family Guy" (5.68 million viewers and a 2.8 key demo) and "American Dad" (4.64 million viewers and a 2.2 key demo).

Hopefully the final weekly number tomorrow will get it sorted out, but it looks to me like TAR will be on par with last week, including besting their time slot(s) in the demos, barely.

The best news for TAR is that "The Walking Dead" just finished their season.

According to the guy at tvbythenumbers, TWD's "4.7 adults 18-49 rating crushes everything on broadcast, too."

CBS WINS SUNDAY IN VIEWERS AND KEY DEMOGRAPHICS FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK

CBS placed first on Sunday in viewers and key demographics for the second consecutive week, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for March 25.

Editor’s note: Due to late-running basketball (approximately 19 minutes), CBS ratings are tentative and subject to change.

From 7:30-8:30 PM, 60 MINUTES was first in households (6.9/12), viewers (10.92m), adults 25-54 (3.4/09) and adults 18-49 (2.5/08).  Note: This includes 11 minutes of THE AMAZING RACE 20 and does not include the first 11 minutes of 60 MINUTES.

From 8:30-9:30 PM, THE AMAZING RACE 20 was first in households (5.8/09), viewers (9.29m), second in adults 25-54 (3.3/08) and adults 18-49 (2.3/06).  Note: This includes 11 minutes of THE GOOD WIFE and does not include the first 11 minutes of THE AMAZING RACE 20.

Updated Sunday ratings will be available tomorrow.

However, Digital Spy suggests that the 18 minute offset on both sides of the hour may have brought TAR's overnight numbers lower than the press release suggests:

The Good Wife and The Amazing Race helped CBS just edge out ABC in the ratings on Sunday night.

The Amazing Race took in around 9.85 million viewers and an adults 18-49 demo rating of 2.6 at 8pm, while The Good Wife claimed 9.31m (1.9) at 9pm. CSI: Miami attracted around 9.46m (2.0) at 10pm. However, due to the NCAA basketball game overrunning earlier in the evening, CBS's numbers may be slightly adjusted at a later date.

ABC's Once Upon a Time dropped to a series low of 8.67m (2.8  ) at 8pm, with Desperate Housewives levelling at 9pm with 8.71m (2.6). GCB climbed from last week to 6.48m (2.2) at 10pm.

NBC's Harry's Law continued its week-on-week drop to a new series low of 8.02m (0.8  ) at 8pm. Celebrity Apprentice matched its season low of 5.99m (1.8  ) at 9pm.

Fox's The Cleveland Show levelled from last week with 3.14m (1.5) at 7.30pm, with Bob's Burgers dropping to 3.95m (2.0) at 8.30pm. American Dad also slid to 4.27m (2.0) at 9.30pm.

If Digital Spy is correct, then TAR was second for the night to 60 Minutes, and easily won the time slot.
We'll see what CBS says tomorrow when the final Sunday numbers should be available

Here's the official CBS press release for the final weekly ratings; it made little sense to post preliminary numbers with the nearly one hour overrun for the east coast feed. The schedule were all labeled as "specials" so they won't count in season averages.

Ep10 received a disastrous rating. 2.2/6, 8.42, #3 in the 8pm timeslot, following OUAT(2.9/8, 9.07) and The Simpsons(2.3/7, 5.00).

No show on Sunday got the viewership more than 10 million. Summer comes much earlier this year

Technically TAR would be #2 in the timeslot still when averaging The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers's numbers for the whole hour.

Those are preliminary overnight numbers, folks. Which is why I usually don't post them, unless CBS decides not to post a press release for the final weekly numbers or leaves TAR out completely.

We'll know later today.

This may be a stupid question, but I hope TAR's decreasing ratings isn't a sign of... oh, I can't say it. You know what I mean

It's still ranks #1 or 2 in its timeslot, meaning it's still a hit, but the ratings compared to earlier seasons are weaker.

Almost every show is suffering from decreasing ratings. Comparatively speaking TAR's ratings decrease is not large... Look at American Idol and Survivor.

Something to keep  in mind:

Over the years, school calendars and college academic calendars have gradually crept earlier and earlier. While some states still require public school calendars not to start classes before US Labor Day (the first Monday in September), many others have moved the start date into August, and some into mid-August. Same thing for colleges and universities. The primary reason for all of this is to allow exams to take place before Christmas and to use the winter break to mark a break in academic semesters, so the so-called spring semester starts right after New Years. The results is that the school year end by the end of April beginning of May andthus causes graduations, and school year-end finals and activities to also fall in late April - early May; and it also means some families take vacations right after in May or June.

It isn't a direct correspondence to daylight savings, but by the first week in May sunset in many places appears to be well after 8:00 pm. Thus, time shifted viewing to a different night or week, is becoming a bigger and bigger factor in viewership during this period. Except as a relative (and not absolute measurement), ratings are losing some of their value in measuring audiences. It's been a long developing trend, but I'm realizing how many different factors are now contributing to it.

Meanwhile, here is official CBS press release of the weekly ratings ending 4/29:
